Nokia and Samsung, the two heavyweights in the Indian mobile phone industry, have devices in almost all price brackets. Recently Nokia launched its Lumia 525 for Rs 10,399, thus placing it directly against the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 which is available for around Rs 10,500. Though they have different operating systems, they are priced alike and thus we have made a comparison between the two on the basis of their features.
Design and Display:
The Nokia Lumia 525 comes with premium look and glossy body. It has changeable covers and comes in dazzling orange, radiant yellow and luminous white. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 comes in only black and white colours. Also, the Samsung smartphone has smooth and matte plastic back cover with slightly curved edges. The sides are made of false-metal plastic but they have the gloss finishing, which makes the device look good. So basically while the Lumia 525 is much more pleasing to eyes, matte finish makes the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 much more comfortable to use. So you have to decide whether you want dazzling looks or comfort.
Both the phones come with 4 inch display and that too with 480×800 pixel resolution so in terms of display quality, there is not much of a difference between the two handsets. But if you look at their dimensions, the Nokia Lumia 525 is wider and thinner than the Samsung handset. But the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 is taller and lighter than the Lumia 525. To be specific, the Nokia Lumia 525 measures 64×119.9×9.9 mm (width, height, thickness) and weighs 124 grams. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 measures 63.1×121.5×10.57 mm (width, height, thickness) and weighs 118 grams. The difference in weight is due to the battery – the Samsung phone has a 1500 mAh battery against 1430 mAh of the Lumia 525.
The Nokia Lumia 525 comes with 8 GB internal storage (ROM), 64 GB micro SD card slot, and 1 GB RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 has 4 GB ROM, 64 GB micro SD card slot, and 768 MB RAM.
The Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 comes with a 5 megapixel rear camera with auto focus capability. To assist this camera in low light, there is an LED flash in the back of the phone. Also, there is a 0.3 megapixel camera in the front of the phone.
On the other hand, the Nokia Lumia 525 has no front camera but it comes with a 5 megapixel rear camera. However, it does not have an LED flash. So Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 definitely has an edge over the Nokia Lumia 525 in the camera front; hopefully, the Samsung phone’s camera performs like that of Nokia Lumia 525, if not better.
The Nokia Lumia 525 comes with 1430 mAh battery which is said to provide a talktime of 16 hours and 10 hours on 2G and 3G network respectively or 336 hours of standby on 2G/3G networks. Alternatively, it provides 5.9 hours of video playback, or 7.5 hours of WiFi browsing, or 5.9 hours of 3G browsing.
On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2’s 1500 mAh battery claims to provide 7 hours of internet usage on 3G, or 9 hours of internet usage on WiFi, or 6 hours of video playback, or 8 hours of 3G talktime, or 280 hours of standby on 3G network.
Clearly, the Nokia Lumia 525 despite having a smaller battery looks better than the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 when it comes to standby and talktime but in terms of internet browsing and video playback it lags behind.
Operating system and User interface:
The Nokia Lumia 525 has Windows Phone 8 with Lumia Black as compared to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean of Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2. There is a difference of opinion about the Windows Phone 8 vs Android 4.2 comparison. Ofcourse, Android has much more applications than the Windows Phone 8. Also, many says that the Android apps are much better optimised than the Windows apps. The Windows Phone has the Live Tiles user interface as its USP but Android Jelly Bean has a very useful notification bar. Android OS has also much better customisation options than the other. In a nutshell, Android beats the Windows Phone 8 hands down which is obvious as it is now the No 1 smartphone operating system.
Processor and Performance:
Both the devices come with dual core processor but the Galaxy S Duos 2’s processor comes with 1.2 GHz clock speed while the Nokia handset’s dual core Snapdragon S4 processor has 1 GHz clock speed. But at the same time it should be noted that the Lumia 525 has 1 GB RAM against 768 MB RAM of Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2.
So which one performs better? We can’t speak about it right now as we have not reviewed the phones and their specification does not speak clearly about their performance either.
The Nokia Lumia 525 is a single SIM device while the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 has dual SIM slot. Like most Android devices, the Galaxy S Duos 2 comes with WiFi, Bluetooth, 3.5 mm jack, micro USB port, and 3G connectivity. The Nokia Lumia 525 is also 3G enabled and comes with WiFi, Bluetooth, micro USB port, and 3.5 mm jack. Both have GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS support as well for navigation support. They have also DLNA feature.
Nokia Lumia 525 is more attractive and has higher internal storage than the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2. Also, it has 1 GB RAM against 768 MB of the Samsung phone. Connectivity wise both looks equal. Also both the phones have same 5 megapixel rear camera (we cannot speak on picture quality at this point without reviewing the phones) but the that Lumia 525 does not have a front camera or an LED flash. Though Android operating system is much ahead of the Windows OS but both have their own advantages and disadvantages and it is up to the user to decide which one to choose.
