Froyo still dominates among Android versions

0

Among all the versions, Froyo still dominates, according to an updated official Android operating system breakdown which said that Froyo runs 59.4 per cent of all the Android devices.

Among other pointers, Gingerbread is growing as it now runs 18.6 per cent of all devices whereas in March only one per cent of Android devices were being run by it.
Froyo made big strides forward last year while Gingerbread is likely to do the same this year as new devices are being pushed with Gingerbread and many current devices are also being updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The failure of Honeycomb to grab a larger share of the pie chart is slightly out of place. At the time when Motorola Xoom was launched, the Honeycomb’s market share of 0.2 percent was understandable, but now that there are numerous devices running on Honeycomb out in the market, its share of slightly less than 1 per cent disappoints. The interest, however, is likely to peak after the arrival of Android 3.2.

HTC Desire gets Gingerbread update

0

After bit of hesitation, HTC has now rolled out the 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Desire handsets. This update is compatible to all regions except for the users in North America, South Korea, Japan and Germany.

Back in May, we reported that the HTC Desire will get update after the end of July. The new Android Gingerbread for HTC Desire measures beefy 163 and is available through developer.htc.com.

Back in June, HTC had put up a message on Facebook that its Desire handset will not get the Android Gingerbread update. The HTC’s engineering team cited that memory limitation as the chief issue that hindered the possibility of Android Gingerbread update whereas the HTC Desire had 512MB and 576MB RAM.

It was surprising because the Android Gingerbread update was being promised for devices with similar or less memory. In the end, here is the update for the HTC Desire.

Users have to manually download the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update unto their HTC Desire, transfer it to the memory/storage card and then install the update – it is not as easy as it sounds though.

Even before you start any such process, we recommend you to back up all the data and applications using Apps like Astro File Manager or Titanium Backup. The new Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for HTC Desire wipes all data from the device.

RIM announces three versions of BlackBerry Torch smartphones

0

Research In Motion, the Canadian handset maker, has added three new smartphones to its line up including its first network supporting device – BlackBerry Torch 9810. Two other devices that were announced by the company are the BlackBerry Torch 9850 and Torch 9860.

The new BlackBerry Torch 9810, announced for the USA, is a massive improvement in terms of hardware as well as software over the existing BlackBerry Torch 9800. The company hasn’t announced the price and availability of the device but we can expect the details at the CTIA Wireless meet in October.

The all new BlackBerry Torch 9810, or Torch 2 as we may call it, comes with same external chassis and display screen size as that of the Torch 9800. The new Torch 9810 comes with same 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen display with 480×640 pixel that presents crisper text with better looking images and video.

RIM has packed a 1.2Ghz to power the new Torch 9810 while the existing Torch 9800 comes with slow 624Mhz Marvel PXA90 processor. The Torch 9810 has 768MB RAM with 8GB onboard storage that is good enough to store loads of images and videos. At the back lies a 5 camera that can record high quality images and also capable of video recording. Those looking for video chat using the front facing camera will have to be disappointed though.

For connectivity, RIM offers (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth, Near Field Communication chip, GPS, and of course the 4G network support. The BlackBerry Torch 9810 comes with the next generation BlackBerry 7 operating system which brings in new Liquid Graphics, faster web browser, system-wide multi-touch support and a revamped user interface.

Pre-loaded with the Docs-To-Go premium version, BlackBerry Torch 9810 users can read and edit the Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and others on the go.

Packing a 1300mAh battery, the new Torch 9810 promises about 6.5 hours of battery life on GSM and 5.9 hours of battery life on UMTS networks. Despite of better hardware and OS update, there is just marginal benefit when it comes to battery life. Get more details about the new BlackBerry Torch 9810 here.

We expect this handset to be launched and made available by the end of this year or early next year in India.

BlackBerry Torch 9850 and Torch 9860

Looked upon as the BlackBerry Storm handset successors, the new pair of BlackBerry Torch devices will come preloaded with BlackBerry 7 OS and the Near Field Communication chip. We reported about the leaked images of this BlackBerry Torch handset last week.

Out of the two, the BlackBerry Torch 9860 is a GSM model while the Torch 9850 is a CDMA network supporting model. The company hasn’t announced the price and availability of the devices but we can expect the details at the CTIA Wireless in October.

The Torch 9850 and 9860 are powered with 1.2Ghz Qualcomm MSM 8655 processor with 768 RAM and 4 ROM on board. Of course you can add up to 32 GB for additional storage.

RIM has added a 5 megapixel camera with Flash and continuous autofocus. The camera is also capable of recording 720p HD video as well. Looking very curvaceous at the edges, the Torch 9850-9860 has Optical Trackpad with dedicated Menu, Send and End keys.

For connectivity, the new Torch 9850 and 9860 handsets offer WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth, Near Field Communication chip, GPS, digital compass and accelerometer.

Both devices come with 1230mAh lithium-ion battery. However at the product features page states the BlackBerry 9860 offers 4.7 hours of battery life on GSM (2G) networks. We believe appears to be an error and actually may be 7.4 hours because the same device offers 6.8 hours of battery life on Networks. Get more details about the new BlackBerry Torch 9850 and Torch 9860 here.

We expect this handset to be launched and made available by the end of this year or early next year in India.

Twitter has unveiled a new HTML5 version of the Twitter.com for Apple iPad devices.

“We’ve launched our HTML5 version of twitter.com for iPad. It will be rolling out to device owners over the next week or so,” the social network and microblogging website said in an official Twitter post.

The newer version brings improvements both in terms of appearance and performance. In terms of looks, now Twitter.com will appear in a multi pane view as compared to the present single panned one; obviously with HTML5 integration much better performance and faster updation of the tweets is expected.

Anyhow, iPad users are getting benefited by the whole process even though it is getting delayed or not.

As mentioned earlier also, iPad users will start seeing the updated web version of Twitter.com soon enough as Twitter has already started the roll out and they are optimistic that it will reach to the masses in the next week or so.

0

We are surrounded by several gadgets that connect to Internet but require data connection. Smartphones and mobile phones come with a module that allows making use of the 2G and networks.

What about the WiFi only supported tablets and laptops?

At times, you wish for an internet access to connect your laptop or tablet to access the web just like your based mobile phone connects to the web. That’s where your mobile phone comes into picture for your rescue and works without any need of a custom microUSB connector cable.

Mobile hotspot is the term you must have heard a lot these days but hardly used on a frequent basis. Basically, any smartphone running Android 2.2 Froyo or higher is ideally capable of turning itself into a mobile or portable hotspot that can provide Internet access to a limited area. For that, all you need is an active subscription to connection on your Android-based smartphone.

From browsing to multi-player gaming, certainly offers the minimal required support without staying dependent on a full-fledge WiFi hotspot.

At this moment, Google Android 2.2 Froyo based smartphones already come with a portable hotspot or mobile hotspot feature built-in.

Here is a quick guide that will help you turn your mobile phone and smartphone into a mobile hotspot. For the Android-based mobile phone owners:

Step One:

From your Applications list, go to the Settings App.

Step Two:

In Settings, go to Wireless and Networks, then scroll to the Portable Hotspot and it is different from Tethering settings.

Due to custom user interface on different devices, the same menu may come with different words so look for one that states ‘Wireless Settings’ or WiFi Settings.

Step Three:

Just tap on the CheckBox to activate the mobile or portable hotspot and it will be visible on the WiFi enabled devices with phone’s model name by default.

To be on safer side, you need to configure your Mobile HotSpot so that no third person can leech your data connection.

Step Four:

Go to Portable WiFi Hotspot Settings and select the Configuration option.

Step Five

In Network SSID, give any name you wish to assign for your mobile hotspot so that it is easy for you to identify and also for others, if you are sharing it with other users.

Step Six

Choose Security as WPA2 PSK and set an appropriate password. Do not leave it Open. By open means the portable hotspot will be accessible by anyone without any need of password. Then hit Save button and return to the previous options.

There are number of widgets in the Android Market that will offer you HotSpot widgets to quickly enable and disable the mobile hotspot from your phone. We highly recommend all the users to set a custom for their mobile hotspot in order to avoid any misuse by anyone.
