The new Windows Phone 7 Nokia handset

0

About a video featuring a mysterious Nokia handset running Windows Phone 7 has surfaced online. There is no way to confirm, though, whether the handset in question is for real or not. We take this video with a grain of salt but have the details of the alleged new device here.

The video shows two distinct Nokia handsets running Windows Phone 7. One of the handsets appears to have a metallic finish while the other sports a more polycarbonate look.

Nokia and Microsoft’s partnership for a smartphone operating system will certainly result in a couple of handsets scheduled for release later this year. Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 handset Sea Ray did make an appearance online, and is expected to arrive with the Mango update. But, it appears that Nokia Sea Ray won’t be the only new Windows Phone 7 Nokia handset this year.

The leaked video appears to be either fan-made or one of the promotional videos meant for Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 device.

Nokia has partnered with Taiwan-based Compal Communications, the original design manufacturer for the first Windows Phone 7 handset. Compal had Motorola as its largest customer but volumes have been reduced over a period of time. Compal’s is now dependant on the Windows Phone 7 Mango based Sea Ray for large volume sales, and only after that is Nokia expected to place large orders for 2012.

Jo Harlow, executive vice president for smart devices, Nokia, told PC Mag in late May, “We should be launching new devices in a rhythm that might be every couple of months, every three months, something like that.”

Nokia Sea Ray is expected to launch as the first Windows Phone 7 device at Nokia World 2011 in late October, after the Windows Phone 7 Mango update is released.

HTC devices with Beats sound

HTC has announced a strategic partnership with and investment in Beats Electronics. Under this partnership, HTC will integrate the Beats by Dr Dre sound technology in its smartphones that are expected to be released in a month or two.

As per the official statement, HTC and Beats have been working closely and the HTC devices integrated with Beats will be available later this year.

Last year HTC had partnered with Dolby for integrating the Dolby Mobile innovations in HTC devices &#151 both and Windows Phone 7. Several high-end devices featured Dolby Surround sound support for better audio on mobile devices.

Now HTC has decided to invest about $100 million in Beats Electronics. Peter Chou, HTC’s chief executive officer, said in an official statement, “Beats is an exciting brand that has been built around providing something very special, and we believe our strategic partnership will provide customers with unbeatable sound on HTC phones. We obsess over every detail of a consumer’s mobile experience and audio is a critical part of that experience.”

HTC also hinted that Beats phones and tablets will be available this fall. So it is safe to expect new HTC devices running Windows Phone 7 Mango, with Beats sound.

Other than Windows Phone 7 devices, we hope that the upcoming league of Android Ice Cream Sandwich handsets as well as tablets will feature Beats sound.

Cheaper tablets can compete better against iPad, says research

0

To sell more tablets, the manufacturers need to reduce their prices, say analysts from Forrester, a market research firm. According to the analysts, price is a critical factor, though the companies also need to build complete ecosystem of content and business apps. The content providers also needed to concentrate on optimising their content to be delivered in the browsers instead of downloaded apps.

The based content can be easily viewed on all tablets whereas apps can be viewed only on the platform they have been created for. The assertion that reduced prices may mean more sales seems an obvious one but reducing the margins may not be healthy for the tablet manufacturers in the long run.

The same phenomenon was witnessed in the netbook space as well where the manufacturers had to reduce the prices so much their margins became very small, but this didn’t help the product in anyway.

Additionally, price wars have never worked against Apple products. For example, there are numerous cheaper media players in the market competing with iPod, but this didn’t make competition with iPod easier. There are numerous smartphones cheaper than iPhone but iPhone continues to remain a bestseller in the market.

Taking the bigger picture in the account, out innovating Apple seems to be a better option against the company rather than just reducing the price blindly, without thinking it through.
The analyst firm Forrester says most of the initial buyers for the iPad were those who belonged to the higher income bracket, but 44 per cent of the users surveyed by the company said high prices were the biggest factor stopping them from owning a tablet.

“The price of the device is high enough – on top of that, the monthly charge for service puts broadband-enabled tablets out of range of a mainstream audience,” said analyst Sarah Rotman Epps.

Acer Iconia Smart arriving in September

0

The Acer Iconia Smart, which runs on Gingerbread, is expected to hit the market in September. It has a comparatively bigger display and comes with Qualcomm manufactured 1 GHz Snapdragon processor.

Its display has an aspect ratio of 21:9 and is 4.8 inch in size. Other notable additions include 8 back facing camera and 2 megapixel front facing camera.

At the time when Acer Iconia Smart was announced, the specs held more weight but now many devices are coming with dual core processors. However, this device from Acer is large and has a single core only.

Acer was delaying this device for a long time and it appears the company has managed to get rid of its shyness over it. There are no clear cut answers why the device was delayed; according to some reports it was probably due to earthquake in Japan.

The Acer Iconia Smart weighs only 185 grams and has 8 storage along with 512 RAM. It will be first headed towards North America and there is no word about its India launch as yet.

New calendar app for Facebook users

0

A new mobile calendar called Plango has been announced for Facebook. The app lets users of the social network invite friends to events (such as for lunch); see who is attending; keep track of changes in the programme; send massages; and also integrate with Facebook Places (map) to find a venue for the get together.

Although Facebook already allows you to send invites, there is so far no calendar to manage dates.

“There has been much innovation across social and mobile in the past ten years, but the calendar has somehow managed to remain largely static,” said Petri Sakkinen, chief executive officer of GoAct, the company behind Plango.

“Plango is the useful, fun calendar extension that Facebook has been missing. We redefine the calendar by putting event planning in your pocket, and providing you with a single view of all real-life events and related social activity happening in your network.”

Plango users log in using their Facebook credentials and can invite their Facebook friends to events on it. Events can be private or public, and friends can leave comments or coordination notes in the event’s records. The calendar service isn’t limited to smartphone users. Invites can reach anyone listed in your phone book; Plango sends messages when necessary.

Plango is now available world over on the iPhone, and only in USA and Finland on the web. The company is also building an app for Android.

How to setup exchange mail on Android

0

Even though there are hundreds of options available for corporate emailing these days, many organisations still trust and rely on Microsoft for all such needs, probably due to Windows being the most ubiquitous.

Android devices are fully integrated with Google solutions like Gmail and can be used to access other services as well. Microsoft Mail Exchange is a widely used email, calendar and contact service and it is also possible to sync your device to the service.

The steps below will tell you how to get Microsoft Exchange on your Android smartphone.

Basic requirements: Make sure you have an Android device running 2.2 or better and that you write down necessary details like the exchange server’s user name, and server location.

Step 1

On your Android device press the Applications home key. It is generally located in the lower middle portion of the screen.

Step 2

Once the Applications home screen opens, locate the mail application icon and press it.

Step 3

For newer devices the application will open on a blank page asking for your login credentials for setting up a new mail account. Enter the complete email address and password and press Next.

If you have already configured some other email account, you will have to replace the email with the new one by selecting Delete from the options menu and repeating Step 3.

Step 4

Once the credentials are entered the screen prompts you to choose the type of email account. Select Exchange Account from the given options.

Step 5

The next screen will again ask for your credentials; usually the username and password that were entered on the welcome screen are automatically copied here, but if they aren’t you will have to type them in.

Along with the credentials, the prompt will also ask you for the domain address or Exchange server details (example: mail@xyzcorp.com). If you do not have the details you will have to contact your company’s IT administrator for them.

MS Exchange uses SSL encryption, so do not forget to select that from the given choices and then press Next.

Step 6

The next screen will help you customise your phone’s behaviour in terms of notifications, sync and other options. Make these choices carefully. If something goes wrong or you wish to change it later just go to the Settings menu, select Edit and make the desired changes. Then press Next.

Step 7

The next screen will ask for a name that you wish to give to your mail account on the smartphone and your name as it will appear in outgoing messages sent from the device. Fill in the details and press Done.

The device will take some 5-10 minutes to sync messages and contacts from the Exchange server, be patient.

Samsung to launch Wave III next month

0

Samsung is going to strengthen its Bada platform in India with the launch of Wave III next month. While no other detail was shared about the phone, it is likely to feature the latest version of the Bada OS.

Talking to ‘The Mobile Indian’, Asim Warsi, director of marketing, mobile business, Samsung, said, “Our Wave series has been a huge success for us here in India. We sell as many Wave handsets as any of the Galaxy handsets in the country. We are strengthening the portfolio by launching the Wave III in a month. You will see a lot of action on the Bada operating system front.”

Wave III is likely to support improved graphics and multimedia, as well as the latest version of Bada operating system. Further details are elusive, but rumours suggest a dual core processor and bigger, better screen.

Wave II, the new phone’s predecessor, was launched in December 2010, and the first upgrade released recently is indicative of how fast the mobile market is moving. Wave II features a 1 GHz processor, 3G, WiFi, a 3.7 inch screen, and a 5 camera. Thus it is but natural that Wave III will have better features than these.

Members of Rajya Sabha use tablets to reduce paper consumption

0

At a time when everyone is talking about how to create and maintain a paperless office which can help reduce their carbon footprint while saving money and increasing productivity, Members of the Parliament (Rajya Sabha) have shown the way to achieve it.

In the current session of Parliament, the committee for the provision of computer equipment to Members of Rajya Sabha has enhanced the financial entitlement of members by Rs 50,000 to facilitate the purchase of approved e-reader compatible devices such as Apple iPad2 and Samsung GalaxyTab – to reduce their dependency on paper copies of Parliamentary documents.

Sharada Subramaniam, joint secretary, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, said to ‘The Mobile Indian’, “Around 60 MPs of Rajya Sabha including the Vice President of India are using tablets manufactured by Samsung and Apple.”

She further said, “Our MPs are quite excited about using the new technology available that can help them in managing their recourses and time in a productive way.”

Also, in order to enhance the tablet experience of the MPs and to reduce their dependency on paper, NIC (National Informatics Centre) and Samsung have developed a widget called Rajya Sabha, which facilitate easy access to daily Parliamentary papers.

Using this widget, Members are be able to access the latest list of business, papers laid on the table of the House, as well as Parliamentary bulletins, questions lists, and members’ birthdays.

Subramanium further said, “Shortly we would be adding a Lok Sabha TV feed in the widget through which members and general public can view the proceedings in the Lok Sabha live on their mobile and tablet screen.”

NIC has made the widget for both and platforms; Whereas Samsung has it for Android. The widget can be downloaded by anyone from Samsung’s store.

Motorola to launch cheaper WiFi tablets

0

Motorola will soon release sleeker and cheaper WiFi-only tablets, its chief executive officer, Sanjay Jha, said. The company will focus on building a single brand for tablets and smartphones and on launching its products around the world faster than it has been.

“Price points move much faster than we anticipated. We needed to launch globally with WiFi much earlier. In the second half you will see us launch tablets with much more aggressive form factors, and much greater differentiation in terms of enterprise capability, in terms of multimedia and in terms of distribution,” Jha was quoted as saying by Droid-Life at the Oppenheimer Annual Technology & Communications Conference.

He also said that the upcoming tablet of the company, which is expected in the second half of the year, will feature the latest Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android. It will be the first device to do so. Motorola’s Xoom was notably the first device to feature Honeycomb.

Motorola seems to be taking a leaf from Samsung’s branding strategy. All of Samsung’s Android products are Galaxy devices. Motorola is planning a similar umbrella brand for Android devices and is likely to adopt the name ‘Kore’.
