Port Android OS to HP TouchPad and win $1500 bounty

0

Hacknmod, which provides mobile hacking and modifying tips, has announced a bounty worth $1500 (Rs 67,500 approx.) for porting along with number of features to HP TouchPad tablet.

HP TouchPad tablet went on sale through Best Buy in the USA, Future Shop in Canada and HP website three days ago. All three websites sold HP TouchPad 16 WiFi tablet version for $99 (Rs 4,500 approx.) and 32 GB WiFi tablet version for $149 (Rs 6,750 approx.).

Ever since HP has announced to stop mobile devices operations, users are looking at alternative uses of the TouchPad tablets. These folks include those who have already bought the HP TouchPad and also the ones who are buying one online for cheap. Two strong developer forums have kick-started projects to port Android successfully on the webOS running HP TouchPad.

HacknMod has gone a step ahead and announced a bounty prize for the talented developers who can not only port Android to TouchPad but also make other crucial features working as well. Multi-tiered bounty system by HacknMod has highest prize worth $450 for the basic Android Port and second highest is $350 to get the WiFi module working.

Such projects are aimed to make the best of the TouchPad hardware instead of letting the tablet to become obsolete in near future. After Google Android operating system is ported, users can make the best of the tablet with several Apps.

However, the major purpose of HacknMod’s bounty prize is to deliver an easy and user-friendly method to make Android OS working flawlessly on the HP TouchPad tablet. Also entire work should be documented under the Open Source License regulations.

Rootzwiki forum has set up a special project christened TouchDroid with couple of developers who will initially try to port Android 2.3 Gingerbread on TouchPad. Long term plan includes eventually porting the Android 3.x Honeycomb tablet specific operating system on TouchPad.

HP TouchPad offers hardware similar to that of several Android tablets available today and considering the current fire sale, it is being sold like hot cakes. Unfortunately, there is no legitimate way to get the HP TouchPad tablet for Rs 4,500 or Rs 6,750 in India.
Only way you can do it is, buy one online and get it shipped to your friend, relative or colleague located in the USA. Else you can go with services like Shopandship.com or 20North which charge bit extra for getting the same to your doorstep.

0

Security technology company McAfee has come out with a report which says the malware threat for smartphones is increasing alarmingly, and platform is more at risk compared to other platforms.

“This year we’ve seen record-breaking numbers of malware, especially on mobile devices, where the uptick is in direct correlation to popularity,” said Vincent Weafer, senior vice president of McAfee Labs.
“Overall attacks are becoming more stealth and more sophisticated, suggesting that we could see attacks that remain unnoticed for longer periods of time. High-profile hacktivist groups have also changed the landscape by drawing a line between attacks for personal gain and attacks meant to send a message.”

Malware aimed at Android smartphones has gone up by 76 per cent, said McAfee which termed it as the “most attacked mobile operating system”, whereas earlier the same crown belonged to Symbian operating system.

The McAfee report suggests the total number of Android malware samples will reach 75 million by 2011 end. The company says malware could come in any form including fake updates to a genuine app, calendar apps or even comedy apps.

The report also mentioned a rise in the for-profit mobile malware, such as Trojans that send simple SMSes or complicated Trojans which are used to compromise the phones.

Vodafone to offer operator billing for Android apps

0

Vodafone has entered into an operator billing agreement with Google for apps. It will enable Vodafone subscribers to purchase applications without the need to pay through credit card. The cost of the apps purchased will be deducted from the prepaid balance or will be added to the postpaid bill.

“We have done a deal that covers the global footprint,” Tobin Ireland, Vodafone’s commercial development director, said in an interview to Bloomberg.
The company also held talks with Microsoft for a similar deal for Windows Phone 7, he said.

We had earlier carried a news that Vodafone is in talks with Nokia for Ovi store billing, which was denied by both the companies. However, now it’s seems that they have been in talks with not just Nokia but all other players like Android and Windows.

Operator billing not just helps consumer buy applications without much hassle but also encourages impulsive buying, increasing the consumption of paid applications. The operators benefit by getting a cut (a part apps’ price) and also by offering a unique service they can retain subscribers.

Vodafone India spokesperson was non committal on the issue saying they have not got any directions so far about the development.

Currently, only Reliance offers operator billing for the Ovi Store of Nokia. Most service providers including Reliance Communication, Airtel, Aircel and Idea have their own application stores for which the operator billing is available. However, these application stores are much smaller in comparison to the like of Android Market or Ovi store and will give a huge advantage to Vodafone when it starts offering the billing service as currently the Android platform is the fastest growing operating system in the country.
Though Android users mostly download free applications, with the addition of in-app purchase feature there will definitely be a surge in paid users category as well.

The ‘Shoot the Birds’ game will only be able to run on phones which have dedicated imaging processors, which means that it would not be compatible with low end Android devices. While the online playability is not available in this game but with the inclusion of Open feint in this, users will be able to share their scores online and tally them against players from around the globe.

The developers have decided that there will be no free version of this application, for now at least, as the advertisements and distraction during game play can totally take away the game pleasure. There is a single application that is available and is compatible for both smartphones and tablets. Users will have to pay a small amount or Rs 52 to get this game on their android device.

The application can be downloaded directly on the Android 2.0.1 and above devices from the Android Marketplace or alternatively user can also follow the link to download it also.
