RIM launches BlackBerry music service

RIM, the makers of BlackBerry phones, has announced BBM Music which is expected to be available later this year for a monthly subscription fee of $4.99 (Rs 250).

It is a BBM (BlackBerry messenger) connected social music service that allows BlackBerry smartphone users to share and discover music through your BBM Music friends. But the users must also have BBM 6 installed on their devices.

Once you have created a BBM Music sharing friendship with a BBM contact, you can make use of all that BBM Music offers.

The service allows users to build their music profile (basically download songs to you cloud account) from a catalogue of millions of tracks (with more to be added over the coming weeks).

You can invite friends to BBM Music from your BBM contacts and gain access to their music and share your music (once they subscribe or join the free trial). You can also create playlists not just from your own BBM Music songs but also from your friends’ songs.

It also allows sharing playlists or single songs with BBM Music friends. RIM has tried to make this service a very social experience and has added functionality to follow friends’ BBM Music activity via timelines and comments, or start up a BBM chat about your favourite bands.

In case you are out of network area, you can listen to cache music that gets stored in the handset. This feature will be very useful in developing countries like India where services are still only available in cities only. India availability has not been announced yet, but it is likely to be announced soon after the international launch.

App Review: Delhi Metro Navigator

0

Delhi Metro is growing by the day; from the first line being inaugurated in December 2002, with just six stations, the network has grown to include 134 stations now with many interchanges between different routes. So charting one’s way to a particular place from a dozen of routes is definitely a complex issue. In such a case, an Application has come to the rescue of the passengers.

The application, called ‘Delhi Metro Navigator’, is a free Android app, developed by two young developers. The application has a very simple design with just four usable tabs (two others are About and Exit tabs).

Fare Tab

The first tab is useful for people who travel to different station each day (people in sales, marketing etc.) or those who are new to the city.

It tells you the price of the ticket. You just need to select the stations between which you intend to travel and it tells you the fare.

Very simple yet effective.

Map

This tab gives you the route map of Delhi Metro – it has been done a very old world fashion. The map is nothing but a picture of the Delhi metro route map. So you can only zoom in even that is limited by the low image used.

The application would have been much better had the map been interactive with ability to select the station in the map itself with fare, time etc displayed.

Route

This tab gives you the name of all the stations that you will cross en-route to your selected destination.

It will thus particularly helpful if you are supposed to change the train midway. This information is available on the Delhi Metro site and could have been easily implemented.

Parking

This is another tab that could have been much more useful than it currently is had it been implemented with more little more effort.

While it gives the parking rates for certain stations, for most it responds with ‘information not available on the site (Delhi Metro)’. While the parking rate is a useful information, more required information is whether the facility is available at a particular station or not (not all stations have parking facility).

Verdict

A useful but half-hearted attempt at creating an that could be so much help. It is still useful for people new to the system, but they will still need to ask the fellow passengers (I have seen them doing that) or will need to look at the maps put up at the station.

Though sufficient announcements are made within the train about where to change, yet people find it tough as they are not aware. For instance, the announcement is made “Please change here for blueline”, now what the heck is Blueline?

In such a situation this app has great potential, but it needs to be worked on further.

To increase the appeal to the regular passengers, an alert service can be started in the app, which will tell the users if there is any delay in the line (for this there needs to be a partnership with DMRC or even crowd sourcing through Facebook/Twitter integration can be used). This will not just save the passengers the hassle of waiting at the station, it will ease out the crowding at stations as well.

App Review: Pocket Conductor- Delhi

0

Public transport scene is getting better in Delhi thanks to the metro and new low floor DTC buses. But who are new to Delhi, it is still difficult as to which route to take; and what metro and DTC bus combination works best for them. If using a taxi or auto rickshaw, what is the fare that they need to pay?

All these questions are answered by this one application that works offline (so help is around even when network is not).

The application called ‘Pocket Conductor-Delhi’ has five tabs, all are very useful in getting to know the public transport in Delhi.

Plan Journey

This tab gives you option to key in the starting point and destination and it gives you option of travelling using either DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) buses or Metro or Both.

The only concern here is about how often the application is updated. Since it is an offline it cannot update itself, so you have to download the updated versions as and when it is made available.

Route Details

This gives you stops that a particular bus route traverses.

Stop Details

This is another useful feature, it tells you about the near by stops (bus stop) of your destination along with the distance between the two. This will help you find the better bus route (at times single bus route can be found versus two routes for the exact bus stop).

Delhi Tavi Fare

This tab gives the fare per kilometre for auto rickshaw, Ratio Taxi and Yellow taxi services of Delhi. It also has a fare calculator which calculates fare for distance travelled. You can use the of your phone to know the distance between the two places.

Internet Dependent services

This is a very important tab, you can update the information on the app through this tab. Pressing the tab gives you seven tabs, which allows you to input correction if any information is no more relevant, other tabs allow you to look for PNR Status (Railway), Find nearby ATM.

There is also a Delhi Announcement wall, which users can update with information about certain events in Delhi, you can also watch what other have put in (this and other buttons that allow updates by users basically connects you to a Facebook page).

There is even an option to update your bus’s current position.

Verdict

It’s a must download. The application is simple and very useful for everybody in Delhi, especially for people who are new in the city. If it becomes popular and people start updating it can become even better. Although if an online version was also made with frequent updates, the accuracy of the app will increase many fold.

Beetel to launch Android 2.3 smartphone, LTE device around Diwali

0

Beetel, which last week entered the tablet market with Magiq, will be launching an smartphone and an device in October.

Beetel’s executive director and chief executive officer Vinod Sawhny told The Mobile Indian, “We will launch an Android 2.3 based smartphone and an LTE device around Diwali. Our design and development team is working on prototype devices which will change the landscape of the Indian mobile market.”

He didn’t reveal the pricing of the smartphone but said that Beetel’s strategy is to provide affordable products to its consumers. We expect the company’s Android 2.3 based smartphone to be priced sub Rs 9,000.

Sources familiar with the development told The Mobile Indian that the smartphone will run on a Qualcomm 1 GHz Snapdragon and will have a 3.2 inch display.

Being an Android phone, standard Android applications and features like Google Maps, G-sensor and the ability to download applications from the Android Market will be available on the smartphone.

New Symbian Belle update

0

Nokia’s new Symbian Belle update is ready. The handset manufacturer has set up a countdown timer on its Facebook page. The filename of the timer is “belle_fb_TeaserMain”, which hints at the Belle update.

Symbian Belle is being launched soon after the recent Anna update, which brought much new functionality to Symbian 3 operating system.

We have already seen many leaked videos and screenshots of the Belle update, and know that the new will have many improvements such as the Android-style pull-down bar for notifications, a back-button based interface, a new virtual keyboard, and a new camera UI.

There will also be widgets of different sizes in a range of different positions, suggesting that this offers a lot more flexibility in customising home screens. Perhaps size will be based on usage.

N8 is likely to be the first to get the update followed by X7, E6 and others shortly thereafter.

iPhone 5 to support both GSM and CDMA

0

iPhone 5 is going to be a dual mode device capable of working on both GSM and CDMA networks, said TechCrunch citing credible evidence.

World Phone capability, as the dual mode support is called, will be useful for people who travel abroad a lot. GSM is the more popular network worldwide and therefore it becomes a problem for people carrying a CDMA-only phone as they have to change phones while traveling in countries where there are no CDMA networks.

There are an increasing number of world phones in the market from manufacturers like Motorola, BlackBerry and HTC. These phones have either two slots with one for CDMA (Motorola Milestone XT800), or support both networks with just one SIM slot (BlackBerry 8830 world edition).

Even dongles with dual mode support are expected to be launched soon in India &#151 MTS is offering one while other CDMA operators are also expected to follow suit given the benefits.

In India, where none of the operators have managed to get nationwide coverage, Tata Teleservices and Reliance Communications have nationwide high speed EVDO (CDMA) networks. Tata Teleservices’ nine and RCom’s 13 circles will benefit the most from World Phone capability as they will be able to offer nationwide to high speed data users.

However, the problem is that both these operators seem to have given up on CDMA networks, and aren’t putting much effort although some reports suggest that they are investing in upgrading their CDMA network to Rev-B which will give them the ability to offer up to 14 data speeds on their CDMA network. A Qualcomm executive had confirmed the same to The Mobile Indian without naming the operator or the city. If that is the case they will definitely be looking at using World Phones to make CDMA more attractive.

CDMA technology is claimed to be better than GSM as far as data rates and spectrum efficiency are concerned. Also, it offers better indoor penetration (meaning coverage) as it works on lower bandwidth.

Another benefit of World Phone is the lower data cost on CDMA networks without compromise in the ability to change operators. In fact, World Phone users have wider choice as they can choose between CDMA and GSM operators.

Apple may bring cheaper iPhone 4

0

A Korean company has started manufacturing an inexpensive version of iPhone 4 with 8 internal storage, according to a Reuters report which cited two sources familiar with the development. Without divulging the company’s identity, the report noted that the 8 GB iPhone 4 will go on sale within weeks. It further stated that the new phone will be called iPhone 4S since it will be a better version of iPhone 4.

The new Reuters’ report has nothing more to add than what has already been discussed over the last couple of months. Gossip suggests that Apple’s component suppliers in South East Asia will help the company build the new iPhone.

According to sources, Apple buys flash storage from Toshiba and Samsung Electronics. The device is question will be branded iPhone 4S and will be a slightly improved version of the current iPhone 4. The new iPhone 4S will have a slightly bigger display, better and an 8 camera, stated one of the sources.

Why would Apple do what it has never done in the last three years i.e. produce a cheaper iPhone?

The evidence is out there and massive. Two year old Apple iPhone 3GS is the second favourite smartphone in the USA. The model has been selling at a lower initial purchase price and has lower total cost compared to the iPhone 4. However, that works only on USA based networks. In the last two months, several Indian users have made the best of the iPhone 3GS for Rs 19,990 offer, clearly indicating the immense potential for inexpensive and affordable smartphones.

iPhone 4S will be a totally different model compared to iPhone 5, which is likely to be launched by September end.

As per the information provided, Hon Hai and Pegatron will ramp up to meet the 45 million units-production capacity of iPhone 5. This model will be a world mode device, which means it will have a radio chip that will support both GSM and CDMA networks.

However, Apple remained tight-lipped when asked for further clarity.

Port Android OS to HP TouchPad and win $1500 bounty

0

Hacknmod, which provides mobile hacking and modifying tips, has announced a bounty worth $1500 (Rs 67,500 approx.) for porting along with number of features to HP TouchPad tablet.

HP TouchPad tablet went on sale through Best Buy in the USA, Future Shop in Canada and HP website three days ago. All three websites sold HP TouchPad 16 WiFi tablet version for $99 (Rs 4,500 approx.) and 32 GB WiFi tablet version for $149 (Rs 6,750 approx.).

Ever since HP has announced to stop mobile devices operations, users are looking at alternative uses of the TouchPad tablets. These folks include those who have already bought the HP TouchPad and also the ones who are buying one online for cheap. Two strong developer forums have kick-started projects to port Android successfully on the webOS running HP TouchPad.

HacknMod has gone a step ahead and announced a bounty prize for the talented developers who can not only port Android to TouchPad but also make other crucial features working as well. Multi-tiered bounty system by HacknMod has highest prize worth $450 for the basic Android Port and second highest is $350 to get the WiFi module working.

Such projects are aimed to make the best of the TouchPad hardware instead of letting the tablet to become obsolete in near future. After Google Android operating system is ported, users can make the best of the tablet with several Apps.

However, the major purpose of HacknMod’s bounty prize is to deliver an easy and user-friendly method to make Android OS working flawlessly on the HP TouchPad tablet. Also entire work should be documented under the Open Source License regulations.

Rootzwiki forum has set up a special project christened TouchDroid with couple of developers who will initially try to port Android 2.3 Gingerbread on TouchPad. Long term plan includes eventually porting the Android 3.x Honeycomb tablet specific operating system on TouchPad.

HP TouchPad offers hardware similar to that of several Android tablets available today and considering the current fire sale, it is being sold like hot cakes. Unfortunately, there is no legitimate way to get the HP TouchPad tablet for Rs 4,500 or Rs 6,750 in India.
Only way you can do it is, buy one online and get it shipped to your friend, relative or colleague located in the USA. Else you can go with services like Shopandship.com or 20North which charge bit extra for getting the same to your doorstep.
