0

Nokia Symbian S60 ^3 devices have patiently waited for the Symbian Anna update. Now it’s available for download.

Symbian Anna is the official upgrade to the Symbian S60^3 operating system. It brings a lot of changes to devices and boosts overall performance.

Nokia has released the update in more than 30 countries &#151 covering over 60 per cent of existing Symbian^3 smartphones.

There are predominantly two ways by which users can upgrade their device to Symbian Anna: via WiFi or through the Ovi Suite.

Make sure you have a fast WiFi connection as a lot of data will be downloaded during the update process. Also make sure that the device is fully charged before you begin.

Method 1: Using WiFi

Step 1

Switch on your device and let it stabilise before you begin the update process. It is important because the device might otherwise become less responsive and the update process will take more time.

If your device is on then it is advised that before the upgrade you restart it. And again make sure your battery is charged. Following that, connect your device to a WiFi network.

Step 2

Then press the ‘Menu’ key on the screen to access the main menu.

Step 3

Locate and access the ‘Applications’ icon from the main menu.

Step 4

The screen will show the contents of the Applications tab. The next thing you need to do is locate the ‘SW Update’ icon.

The SW Update application will allow the device to connect to the internet and search for device software upgrades.

Step 5

Select the SW Update icon and the screen will display a prompt saying ‘Refreshing the list of available upgrades’. This is when the device searches and builds up the list for all available updates.

Step 6

Once that is done the following screen will show you the list of upgrades available for your device.

Choose the device software upgrade from the list.

Step 7

After selecting the device upgrade press the ‘Play’ button on the bottom left of the screen.

If you see multiple options check the information of the update by hitting or selecting the ‘I’ key on the same menu.

Step 8

Following that the device will start downloading the selected software update.

The time taken to download the update will depend completely on internet speed so it is advised that you have high speed internet connectivity, or have patience to let the device download the update slowly.

Step 9

Once the download finishes the device will prompt you to install the software. Press ‘Now’ to continue.

Step 10

The device will then warn you that it won’t be available for making calls and that it will restart a couple of times during the upgrade. Press ‘Accept’.

Step 11

The phone will shift to upgrade mode and the screen will go blank for a couple of seconds. Following that a white screen will come up and will show the status of the update.

Once the update is complete the device will restart and it will have Symbian Anna installed on it.

Method 2: Using Ovi Suite

If you want to upgrade your phone using the Ovi suite:

Step 1

Connect your phone using the supplied cable. The Ovi suite will take some time to recognise the device and will seek suitable updates for it.

Step 2

Select the device software or operating system upgrade from the list and press ‘Next’. The device will restart and will continue with the update process by downloading the required software.

Step 3

Once downloaded, the device will switch to the upgrade mode and will install the upgrade. Upon finishing, the device will restart and will have Anna installed on it.

Android 3.0 lacks mass adoption: LACS

0

In January 2010, an unknown company entered the communication market with the launch of a touch media device, which in common parlance is known as a tablet, and its focus was the enterprise segment.

But this year, Lakshmi Access Communication Systems (LACS) has changed its focus to target end consumers and is credited with launching the most affordable 2.2 based tablet for Indian consumers starting from Rs 6,999.

Interestingly, LAC does not plan to have tablets running on Android 3.0 in the next few months. Mahendraa Kumar D Jain, managing director, LACS said to The Mobile Indian, “We have purposely not used Android 3.0 for our tablets as it has been launched recently and has not seen mass adoption. Also, we do not want to provide Google with market research and consumer feedback for Android’s latest OS on our expense and also Android 3.0 lacks a sufficient number of apps.”

Jain further added, “Our mission is to provide info entertainment services on tablets to people of India at an affordable price and that too with an enriching experience without being bogged down by technology.”

On the product portfolio, Jain said, “We now have four ranges of Android tablets – Pepper, Tamarind, Mirchi, and Paprika, which come in 12 variants with screen sizes ranging from 4.3 to 11.8 inches, where some tablets can come with keyboards and other accessories.”

He added, “The tablets are 3G, WiFi and SIM-enabled depending on the model, while top-end ones are loaded with both Windows and Android operating systems. As of now, we have launched eight tablets and by September end we will be launching the remaining.”

On whether LAC will enter the smartphone business Jain said that the company does not plan to enter the segment as its focus area is tablets.

Offerings

LACS has a plethora of tablets at prices varying from Rs 6,250 to Rs 35,000. It has chosen Android 2.2 and 2.3 operating systems for smaller 7 or 8 inch tablets and Android 2.3 Gingerbread for bigger 10 inch tablets.

The low price of the tablets does not imply anything lacking in terms of hardware. The company has offered its cheapest 7 inch tablet Pepper M74V with an 800 processor and 4 of onboard memory. Although there have been compromises in terms of hardware as the device only gets a resistive touchscreen but at Rs 6,250 it is surely better than what most competitors are offering just now.

Another unique offer from LACS is the Paprika M10 tablet. For Rs 35,000, this tablet has Android and Windows dual operating systems and comes with 16 GB of onboard memory. connectivity through a dongle is an option on all LACS tablets.

Availability and support

Consumers can currently buy LACStablets from the company’s website but Jain informed us that in the next three days the company will open a store in Bangalore; in ten days in Mumbai; and in 15 days in Delhi.

The company also provides two types of warranties: replacement and upgrade. In replacement, within one year of the invoice any device can be replaced with a swap unit at the service center as long as the same colour is available, otherwise it will take 15 working days for a replacement to be delivered.

In upgrade warranty, if the user of a LACS Android tablet wants to migrate to an upper version or lower version of the device he can do so by paying the difference of cost for a higher model or can take cash back if he is switching to a lower model.

Other than that the company is also offering an extended replacement warranty of two years in which users can get their tablets replaced if they encounter a problem. To avail it users have to pay 15-20 per cent of the tablet’s cost when they are buying a new tablet.

To ease the buying process, Jain said, the company has tied up with ICICI bank, HDFC bank, Citibank and Standard Chartered to provide a 12 month purchase option for these devices.

Things in pipeline

LACS will launch two tablets each in the Paprika and Tamarind series by September end. The devices will cost between Rs 10,000-20,000.

Jain said to The Mobile Indian, “In the next three months we will also tie up with a telco that has pan Indian footprint to sell our tablets in a bundled offer.”

To reach every nook and cranny of the country, Jain said that he plans to set up 10,000 showrooms in the next 12 months. These will also have experience zones where consumers can use and explore tablets from LAC before purchasing them. These stores will be a mix of directly owned and franchised outlets.

To bridge the language barrier created by Android, which currently supports the major European languages and Chinese but not Hindi even though it is one of the most popular smartphone operating systems in India, Jain said, “LACS plans to launch an application by the year end which will be overlaid on Android OS and will support 11 Indian languages.”

Current scenario

In the last few months the tablet space in India has seen launches in different price segments starting from Rs 9,999 for Beetel’s tablet to Rs 36,000 for iPad from Apple.

Indian consumers are slowly getting attracted to tablets. It started with Olive’s tablet and gained momentum with Apple’s iPad. At present there are mainly three variants &#151 WiFi, 3G and WiFi+3G, from equipment manufactures like HCL, Samsung, Notion Ink and Motorola.

Even though there are a large number of tablets available, Indian consumers are still trying to figure out the utility of these devices. Significant adoption of tablets will happen only when they become primary devices in a consumer’s life.

Nokia N8 gets camera update beta

0

Following the release of Anna update for Symbian^3 phones, Nokia Beta Labs has released a mega update for Nokia N8’s camera. This beta update allows video recording at 30 frames per second, has a viewfinder grid, and continuous auto-focus. The beta version of the camera update is available only for Nokia N8 devices with Symbian Anna running on them.

Back in June, we quoted Damien Dinning, Nokia’s mobile camera guru, saying that the Nokia N8 camera will get better updates after Symbian Anna is rolled out. As promised, Dinning enumerated user interface improvements in the Carl Zeiss lens bearing N8.

Smoother zoom has been enabled while capturing still images as well as video. The user interface of the settings has been tweaked so that all customisable options are available after a single tap. Exposure compensation control has been added to deal with luminance in different environments. Auto flash mode will now remove those embarrassing red eyes in images.

With the camera update for N8, Nokia has finally brought the capability to shoot video at 30 frames per second, as well as continuous auto focus.

Do note that the camera update is in the beta testing stage and can cause some irregularities in the camera’s functions. We recommend you take a back up of all data on your Nokia N8 device running Symbian Anna and then install this update.

RIM brings simpler BlackBerry conferencing app

0

Research In Motion (RIM) has updated its BlackBerry conferencing application, adding a couple of new features to it.

The application, which was announced back in the month of June, has been a great hit amongst the business community in particular because of the easier conferencing and collaboration options it provides.

With the new update, the application has become simpler with a moderator to convert an email invitation to a conference invitation with one click. With up to ten conferencing profiles, users will now be offered conference connectivity to various groups without the need to modify things or setting often.

Other improvements include a better algorithm to detect calls and conferencing mails and help in automating the whole process as much as possible. And with the added profiles for conferencing, the updated application will now automatically identify the participant code and help the user in bridging the conference without the need to enter codes for manual participation.

The BlackBerry conferencing application is available for download on all 7 and OS 6 devices. But as of now the service has not been enabled for the users in India. Considering the recent launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9900, it is highly expected that RIM will be announcing the launch of the conferencing service in India as well.

Although the new timeline is not clear as to when this service can be expected but it is anticipated that the conference service will be announced along with the launch of the newer torch devices which are expected to launch in the coming months.

Sony Ericsson unveils Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman

0

Sony Ericsson today announced the launch of its latest based smartphone, the Sony Ericsson Live, with a unique blend of its patented Walkman technology and social media. The social media integration on this Smartphone is somewhat similar to what the Facebook inside Xperia feature brings to the newer smartphones like Xperia Arc and play.

The Sony Ericsson Live features a hardware music button that provides instant access to the music player and with Facebook integration users can easily share it among all their friends with just one touch.

The Sony Ericsson Live smartphone features a large 3.2 inch multi-touch touchscreen and is powered by a powerful 1 GHz processor. A front facing camera is also added to the device but it can only be used to make calls like one does using the Skype video calling.
The rear camera is a 5 auto focus camera and can capture 720p video recording at 30 FPS. Sony’s xLOUD, which enhances audio output, is preinstalled with the latest Walkman update on this device. To make it all a little more exciting, the device comes pre-installed with the latest Android OS for smartphones – the Gingerbread 2.3

The Live also comes preinstalled with Sony’s Qriocity media service that lets the users explore music and video content direct from Sony.

“Consumers want smartphones to deliver a rich and social entertainment experience. Rather than a one dimensional music experience, they want instant and seamless access to new content, combined with the ability to share and connect with their friends. The Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman provides exactly this, in a powerful package with great style.” Said Nikolaus Scheurer, head of product marketing, Sony Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson Live will be made available in India and other countries by the end of this year and that is when more information on the price of this smartphone will be revealed.

LG unveils Optimus Sol with Ultra AMOLED display

0

LG has officially unveiled the LG Optimus Sol, also called E730, which is named after the Spanish word for sun. The phone has been given this name for a purpose – it comes with 3.8-inch WVGA (Wide Video Graphics Array) “Ultra AMOLED” (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display, which the users would be easily able to view in direct sunlight as well.

The phone uses 1 GHz central processing unit (CPU), a five camera, Gingerbread and is 9.8 mm thick. The LG Optimus Sol would be released in Europe by mid-September and then would be launched in Central and South America. It would be available in titan, black and white colours.

“The Optimus Sol stands out from its competitors as the most affordable 1 GHz Android smartphone with an AMOLED display,” said Dr Jong-seok Park, president and chief executive officer, LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “By introducing a no nonsense phone that boasts one of the best displays on the market, we think we have a real winner for consumers looking for a subtle but visually stunning phone.”

The LG Optimus Sol has a different kind of power management system which improves the battery life of the device by about 20-30 per cent. When users choose to use the darker user interface, it improves the battery life of the phone since no white light is being produced. The phone also provides the WiFi Direct and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) connectivity options.

Cheaper Sony PSP E-1000 game console coming soon

0

Sony has announced an inexpensive version of its Sony PlayStation Portable game console, which will arrive later this year. Jim Ryan, president for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, announced the new PSP E-1000 model that has a shocking compromise &#151 lack of WiFi support.

Besides, the mono-aural speakers replace the stereo speakers in the previous generation PSP models. The new Sony PSP E-1000 models will be sold for $99 in US, 99 Euros in Europe and 99 Pounds in UK but there was no information on its release or availability date.

Sony is expected to launch the PS Vita game console sometime early next year in the USA and European region. Apparently, the company at the Gamescon 2011 expo announced a cheaper PlayStation Portable E-1000 model with Universal Media Disc drive support (yes, you read this right). Looks like Sony is not going to give away the physical game media option for the PSP consoles.

PSP E-1000 comes with the same 4.3-inch TFT display with 16:9 aspect ratio and there is also no mention of the slot. That makes us wonder &#151 how will this PSP model connect with the PlayStation network online? Either this model is meant just for playing ALL PSP games published till date or it will connect to the PlayStation network via a PlayStation 3 or PC. No additional video or music codecs has been added to the new PSP Model.

From the photos, the user interface appears to be totally new and fresh. The new PSP E-1000 is expected to be available sometime early next year along with the PS Vita.

Microsoft granted patent for Metro UI on the Windows Phone

0

Microsoft has been granted patent for the Metro User Interface by the US Patent and Trademark Office. This patent was filed under the name ‘Visual motion for user interface feedback’.

Microsoft has been working to implement the Metro into Windows 8 and Xbox 360 in order to create a similar and synergised user experience between three platforms &#151 Mobile, Tablets, Computer and Gaming Console. That is exactly what its rival Apple has been trying to achieve with the release of Mac OS X Lion and 5 update.

The Metro UI in the Windows Phone 7 is aimed at a simple, fluid and easy to adept user interface. The design cues from the Metro UI will be implemented in the next major operating system update &#151 Windows 8. Apart from that, even Xbox 360 and tablets will get some Metro UI styling so that the Xbox LIVE dashboard looks similar to the Games Hub on the Windows Phone device.

The patent application abstract states: “Aspects of a user interface that provides visual feedback in response to user input. For example, boundary effects are presented to provide visual cues to a user to indicate that a boundary in a movable user interface element (e.g., the end of a scrollable list) has been reached. As another example, parallax effects are presented in which multiple parallel or substantially parallel layers in a multi-layer user interface move at different rates, in response to user input. As another example, simulated inertia motion of UI elements is used to provide a more natural feel for touch input. Various combinations of features are described.”

Several inferences can be derived from this move by Microsoft and the most obvious one is prevention of any lawsuit debacles.
What is it in for consumers? Well, let us hope that the investment in the Metro UI patent doesn’t impact sale or shipping of any Microsoft products in future. If that happens, several opportunists will try to make the best of the situation and make quick cash via gray garage sales.

Metro UI on the Windows Phone is good but the experience will not be exactly the same across different platforms.
