How to enable/disable haptic feedback on Android phone

0

Since the invention of touchscreens there have been many things invented on the sidelines just to make the touchscreen experience even better. Haptic feedback, a small little vibration based feedback that the smartphone gives to the user when he/she touches the touchscreen, is one of those a inventions that have been done to make the touchscreen usage more realistic.

While it was done to make things more realistic as far as the touch and feedback goes but ultimately there are people who did not like the feature as much it was expected. Hence, manufacturers have now coming out with devices in which users can shut the haptic feedback system off.

Step 1

From the home screen, press the applications menu key on the display that will bring up the applications menu.

Step 2

Locate and select the settings tab. This is the regular way to reach to the main device settings. If you want you can access it through the device’s short menu as well by choosing settings under the ‘options’ key on the device..

Step 3

The settings menu will open up the device’s settings page. From here select the ‘Sounds and Display’ tab and select that to open the related menu. This settings menu takes care of the performance related settings of the device so be careful while changing other settings as well.

Step 4

The ‘Sounds and Display’ tab will open up the associated menu. Scroll and locate ‘Haptic feedback’ form the menu.

Step 5

Some devices by default come with haptic feedback enabled while some come with this functionality disabled. The Motorola Milestone smartphone, which we used for this, comes with this service enabled by default.

Step 6

Select the desired effect for the haptic feedback. So if you want to enable the feedback then check the checkbox or uncheck it if you do not want it. This provides settings for both those who want this feedback and for those who do not want this as well.

Once done exit the menu and now you will notice your device working according to your preference.

Handset Review : Fly MV 248

0

As far as the low end phones go, dual based handsets are and will be the next big thing and soon will outnumber the single SIM based devices. Today, many big and small device manufacturers have devices in this segment. Fly – owned by Meridian Mobiles India, is one such brand and has been in the Indian market for a really long time now.

Fly has sometime back came out with a dual SIM handset – the MV 248, which aims to offer more value for money while not sacrificing on the features.

First looks

The MV 248 surely impresses by its bold looks and bright colour combinations – it comes in a carbon graphite coloured body with a choice of highlight in orange and red. Both the colour combinations look great and give it a very youth centric appeal.
While the body has a matte finish, the orange/red highlighted portion comes with a glossy finish, which gives it a stylish look.

Design

The phone’s face has been divided in a 60 – 40 ratio with 60 per cent area being allocated for the display while the rest of the area goes for the keypad. All the keys are placed on the face only making it easier to handle as side keys tend to get accidentally pressed while keeping and taking out the phone from pocket.
Although the phone is slightly bigger than the normal size and a lot thicker but this has been done to accommodate the keypad and the battery which are really big in comparison to most handsets. The edges are curved that add to the overall comfort factor. Also, the corners of the screen have been tapered off to make it easy for the ears for longer communication times without pains.

Display and keypad

The display is a big 2.4 inch TFT- display (non touch) with a of 320 x 240 pixels. The display reproduces bright and quite colourful images. It has a protective scratch resistant plastic protector as well which is integrated in the outer body of the MV 248 and aims to protect the display from scratches and damages during accidental falls.

The keypad of the MV 248 is great which offers maximum comfort to the users with its spaced out keys and perfect key pitch combination. One thing disliked about the keypad is that the call connect and disconnect keys are kept too close to the numeric keys and may cause problems for speedy typers.
The keypad has a big ‘d pad’ in the center for navigation which is more like a silver/ ring with a coloured ring in the center of the key which is very easy to use.

Build Quality

Although it’s complete plastic, the device has a good build quality and is sturdy enough to handle quite a few drops and falls. We dropped it on a variety of surfaces from waist’s height and it hardy received any damage.
Also the device seems to be dust resistant as there are not many open cavities or loose spaces between plastic parts on this device but the port has no dust cap so it might actually make up for the whole body’s dust accumulation through the cavity.

Call Performance

Being a dual SIM phone, Fly MV 248 can be connected to two cellular networks or two different numbers at any given time. However, it does not feature two-SIM standby feature that allows the other SIM to be active while the first SIM receives a call.
The signal quality of this phone is normal and it works flawlessly in most places. The call sound quality both for the speaker and the receiver are good without any distortion or voice quality loss. The microphone positioning of the phone is towards the bottom of the phone that allows the MV 248 to catch minimal ambience noise as well therby providing a basic level of noise isolation.

Multimedia

The Fly MV 248 has an inbuilt audio video player that supports most popular audio and video formats like MP3, WMA, MP4 and 3GP as well. Plus, the MV 248 comes with a standard mini USB port for transferring files or charging this device from the computer as well.

The MV 248 does not come with a standard 3.5 mm audio connector which is a really big let down from multimedia perspective. It uses the same USB connector for audio connectivity. In terms of music playback, the headset is a big disappointment and even at lower levels the quality goes for a toss. You can try another set of ear plugs but the device has some issues at high volume levels as well.

Just opposite to headsets, the MV 248 has got a big speaker with great sound quality, better than most dual SIM handsets out there in the market.

The MV 248 also features a nice 2 camera with flash. The quality of the camera is good in bright light to medium light conditions. In low light, the camera automatically adjusts the shutter speed to compensate the brightness loss. Ultimately it works as a great camera and when connected to the PC this can also be used as a webcam with inbuilt drivers to work with most Windows based operating systems..

Battery life

One of the biggest advantages of the Fly MV 248 is its big battery that has impressed us to the maximum. The MV 248 has the biggest mobile phone battery ever made in the from of a 2000 mAh, 7.4 Wh rating battery pack. The battery pack powers the device for good 12-14 hours of along with additional time being spent on music listening too. Overall the MV 248 gives a week long device usage time with moderate usage with between charges.

Finally

The Fly MV 248 is a great bundle of joy for those who want a decent set of features without spending a fortune. For the price it offer multimedia, great battery backup, good looks, and a great build quality.
Though it misses out on a 3.5 mm jack but overall it’s a great deal. Music lovers can easily pair this with a based headset to enjoy wireless music without worrying about its audio connectivity.

So in a line, the MV 248 offers great set of features and usability by being a good dual SIM based feature phone for a price tag of Rs 2,250 (MRP).

App Review: Drag Racing

0

Out of all gaming genres, Indians love arcade style racing on their mobile phones. Whether it is sophisticated F1 race or a street race, every such game gets equal love.

The new Drag Racing Free is an amazing and addictive racing game that offers more than 50 real cars. However, it’s not just about different realistic looking cars but it is also about upgrades and several opponents that challenge your skills in every race. Every millisecond is crucial in the race and this game will make you realise that.

Drag Racing Free offers four self-explanatory menu options – Race, Garage , Settings and Stats. The Race starts off with Level 1 and offers three basic modes – Race offline, Race Online and Pro League. Out of these three basic game modes, if player chooses Race Offline then the opponent can be chosen to be a Beginner, Amateur, Pro or Boss (super expert). For every race won, there is a fixed amount of cash awarded. On beating the Boss in the offline race mode, one gets 10 Respect points as well.

The basic object of offline racing is to get familiar with the gameplay and also practice the timing to be as accurate as possible. Gameplay involves getting a good start and timing the gear shifts perfectly. During the race, even an indicator shows up in the middle of the screen to hint the gear shift required. Also the indicator offers colours to give appropriate boost like the Green gives massive speed boost while blue gives a mediocre bump and red just slows you down.

By default, the game offers over 50 different popular car models to choose from and it also includes the Hennessey Venom GT (1200 bhp). Player can also take a test drive (in game, of course) of the car before hitting the purchase button. The game has been designed in such a way that that the better upgrade you get for your car, tougher the competitor becomes. That keeps things competitive.

At this moment, the game suffers from Tuning bug. So if you are going through Garage, then set the filter to My Cars by tapping all the other boxes to appear silver. Then if you tap on upgrade and choose any other option to tune your car, the will keep showing you same error. So just skip that at this moment.

Unlocking achievements gets extra cash to purchase the in-game cards and also earning extra reputation points. So the game is simple – win races to earn cash and reputation points. Upgrade your car to win more races against competitive opponents.

Though the game looks like simple racing one, it does have gripping element of constant competition and rewarding the efforts applied.

Over an hour’s time, this game becomes really addictive and challenging at the same time.

Drag Racing Free is available for free for the 3.0 or higher running iOS devices from Apple App Store.

Game Review: Rock The Vegas

0

In the recent past we have seen quite a few building based strategy games on platform. These games take advantage of the bigger screen sized devices and provide a detailed game play to the users where they have to control almost everything and that’s what makes these games interesting as well.

Rock the Vegas is yet another game that has been launched by its developer – Game Insight, in the building and strategy gaming genre. The game just like its previous version My Country that focuses on making a city right from the scratch and as you earn money and then in turn use the same money to make the city better.

Rock the Vegas game brings back the same game play but with an interesting twist – the control to build the Vegas City right the way you want it to be. Users are given the required and the bare minimum basic training for playing the game in the initial few stages of the game but if you have played the My country game in the past you will know what to do and how. For new players, the game has got a long list in terms of options and menus to toggle and control the game. Users get the power to control each and every element of the game play be it population, buildings, light which of course look great in the newly added night play mode where the neons over the casinos just look simply superb.

Since there is no minimum hardware requirement for devices to play this game, it can be easily installed and played on most basic Android devices. Obviously, the quality of graphics will differ from device to device and definitely on smaller devices this game will run relatively slower which might lead to a bad game experience.

There are no in game advertisements or funky stuff like application suggestions. The game gives the option to users to buy the special currency which can be used to get the tasks done faster and buy limited edition and much efficient buildings as well. This is a great way of making games and applications free where the players are not unnecessarily pressed or forced to see advertisements or complete tasks to play the game.

Overall, Rock the Vegas promises hours of fun game play but beware you might get addicted to it and please make sure that you carry your charger with you all the time.

The game Rock the Vegas is compatible with all devices running Android version 2.1 and above. It can be downloaded directly from the Android Market or users can alternatively follow the link to download the application.

Please note that the game has a big download size of about 26 MB, so it is advised that users connect to a high speed data network such as or WiFi to download this game.

Tip for using mobile phone’s camera in low light

0

With the rise of smartphones and camera based mobile phones, photography has taken a new direction all together. Today mobile phones come armed with better and lenses. However, even after these improvements, most cellphone cameras suffer from bad low light photography.
But there are different precautions that users can take especially while shooting in low light so that they get a better picture and not just a haze of lights.

Be still while taking a photo

One of the key things you should remember while doing low light photography is that you have to be really still while taking a picture. The reason behind it is that to accommodate the reduction in the light, a camera reduces the shutter speed and therefore the image sensor is exposed to the light for a longer duration to capture an image and while the image is being captured if the users moves in between then the images get blurred and the detail gets lost.

Move closer to the object

Due to the low light, the camera compensates the detail of the picture being captured so you will never get a highly detailed picture form a distance. So if you want to get some detail in the picture, you have to move closer to the object being captured, closer till you are able to see the details in the preview image. Because a mobile camera captures what users see on the screen.

Shoot against a light source

Whenever you are clicking a picture in the light or in low light, make sure to keep a light source right behind your back. This way the light source will provide ample illumination to the image.

Avoid bright lights in your picture

Another common mistake that people make while capturing pictures in low light is that they tend to include brighter lights in the picture just to make them look good. But what actually happens is that the digital camera is programmed to adjust its settings according to the brightest light seen in the frame and thus details such as the subjects facial features or the whole subject sometimes gets lost in transition.

So whenever possible try to set your picture frame and especially during Diwali time avoid crackers if you plan to capture images during the night.

Do not use digital Zoom

One thing that almost all experienced photographers suggests a person to do is to completely give up the as it makes the images loose detail and does nothing good in the low light photography.

In digital zoom, the phone zooms in on the pixels of the image in order to make it look bigger. And in low light condition, where details are already hard to be clicked, choosing digital zoom would make things further complicated.

Use night mode

Most phone cameras can automatically choose between day and night shooting modes and make changes in settings accordingly, but if your phone does not gives a better picture try changing the picture capture mode to night mode. The for a camera is optimized for low light shooting so using it gives better results than any other mode.

Try before you shoot

There are many camera phones that suggest to the people whether the picture will be good or bad but before you click a picture try out different angles and places to capture that image as a particular angle sometimes turn out to be the best.

Shoot in bulk

Always click as many shots for a particular shot as possible since there is a great chance that when you will click picture in low light something will go wrong so taking a couple of pictures extra will not really hurt, especially when nowadays we have no limitations and no film reels to buy.

As the Kindle Fire tablet, powered by is about to arrive in the US market, Amazon has come out with the announcement of a new e-book format, called Kindle Format 8 (KF8) which takes advantage of the HTML 5 technology. The idea of HTML5 based ebooks is not new, as the current e-book formats such as EPUB, Mobipocket, and even the current Kindle format are a variation of HTML in one way or the other.

In the existing formats, the publishers don’t have control over fonts, text formatting or even layout. This makes it difficult for the children’s or even technical publishers to base their books on them. PDF formats are better for the purpose, but once these files are created, they cannot be made to reflow the e-book contents according to the users’ needs.

In the new Kindle Format 8, all the advanced HTML5 features such as CSS3 formatting, embedded fonts, borders are all supported and then there are richer layout options to make reproduction of children’s books easier than ever. The first device to support the new format will be Kindle Fire, but the support for the same will be extended across other latest Kindles and Kindle apps for smartphones and tablets as well.

Amazon talks about Kindle Format 8 in its site, “As showcased on Kindle Fire, KF8 enables publishers to create great-looking books in categories that require rich formatting and design such as children’s picture books, comics & graphic novels, technical & engineering books and cookbooks. Kindle Format 8 replaces the Mobi format and adds over 150 new formatting capabilities, including fixed layouts, nested tables, callouts, sidebars and Scalable Vector Graphics, opening up more opportunities to create Kindle books that readers will love.”
