How to create keyboard shortcuts in iOS 5 devices

0

Apple has released the new 5.0 update for its iPhone, iPod touch and iPad tablet. Just in case you have not updated your device yet, now would be a good time to go ahead and do it. Amongst several new and interesting features introduced, one of the impressive and heavily useful one was &#151keyboard shortcuts.

Typing with the optical keypad on the iPhone or iPod touch can be bit tiresome especially when you have to respond emails that are bit of redundant in nature. Also not everyone is accustomed with the acronyms. Hence, you can use the keyboard shortcuts in the iOS 5 running devices so that you can freely use the internet lingo while chatting like OMG, LMAO, WTH, ZOMG, etc. Alternatively, you can create shortcuts for the phrases used frequently like ‘As per the company policy’ and so on.

Obviously the basic requirement is an Apple device running the iOS 5.0 update to get started with.

Step 1

Open the Settings App, go to General and then choose Keyboard.

Step 2

Scroll down and tap on &#151 Add New Shortcut.

Step 3

In the Phrase box, you are supposed to enter the phrase for which shortcut needs to be defined. For instance, ‘As Per Company Policy’ in the box next to Phrase. Then you can define any shortcut like in this case we kept ‘apcp’ as shortcut for the phrase.

Step 4

Hit save button when you are done. Go ahead and test out your shortcut in Notes app. We typed apcp shortcut, pressed space key and entire phrase automatically appears typed.
Using shortcuts will save lot of time and is kind of complementary to those modern day input methods like Swype, SureType and T9.

0

Google finally announced the much awaited 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Android smartphone and tablets in Hong Kong, China. However it is surprising that this update won’t be available right away but instead would roll out once Galaxy Nexus smartphone starts selling.

The burning question for every Android smartphone owner is &#151 Will their Android 2.3.x Gingerbread running smartphone support the new Ice Cream Sandwich? Google stated that theoretically any smartphone running Gingerbread should ideally run Ice Cream Sandwich. However, thorough testing will reveal the limitations, if any.

Google has combined the best features from its Gingerbread for smartphones and Honeycomb for tablets to give a fresh look with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Chronologically numbered as the Android 4.0, the new ICS update brings fresh look and feel in its revamped user interface. Let’s have a look at someone of the most significant and novel features in the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Resizable widgets and homescreen folders

Android smartphone owners who love widgets for every possible installed have something to cheer about. With the new Android 4.0 ICS, the new resizable widgets will lure several such users to set up widgets for mails, counters, feeds, updates and lot more.

Besides being easily resizable, Google developers have engineered these widgets such as that one can scroll within the widgets. That means – resizable and scroll-able widgets. Also, creating folders to add favorite apps, contacts or bookmarks on the homescreen would certainly be very easy and simple. Users have to simply drag and drop one icon over other to create a group or folder.

By holding on the folder, one can give it a name like Productivity Apps, Gaming, Social, etc. Users would be able to group their favorite applications and shortcuts more logically.

Notifications, lockscreen and launcher revisited

In Android 4.0 ICS users would be able to make the best of lockscreen since the ICS has made notifications tray accessible even when the phone is in locked mode.

Also the lockscreen will have a shortcut to camera app. Notifications tray has gone through a revamp and will have five different toggle switches at the top. Under that, there would be music player controls that will act as shortcut to manage the music playback. Besides that, the notifications tray will let the user remove the notifications individually by simple finger swipes across the screen.

The camera app has been pumped with refreshing and versatile features like continuous autofocus, zero shutter lag exposure and reduced shot-to-shot speed for capturing clearer and crisp images. Improved input functions

Android 4.0 has neat looking keyboard with improved error correction and more accurate word suggestion. The new set of dictionaries offers more accurate heuristics for handling common typing errors. Built-in spell checker underlines the probably mis-spelt words and multiple spelling suggestions to choose the correct one. Even the copy-paste functions have been tweaked so that users can now cut and move around entire word.

With the improved speech to text engine, users can now make the best use of the phone’s microphone to dictate the speech that gets transformed in to text. One can speak out entire emails and even text messages using the voice input function.

Along with over all look and feel improvement, Google engineers have also made the native Calendar app more robust. One can now pinch and zoom within the calendar app and also allow other applications to integrate with the same app for managing events and reminders.

Google has revamped Gmail app for Android massively by making it easier to use and interact with. The nested subfolders are supported along with respective sync rules and along come the integrated menu for managing different accounts and recently created labels.

Responding to emails will be easier and quicker for users as they won’t have to face change of screens while choosing between reply all or forward. The auto-completion of recipients is also a welcome change as users can tap on the recipient’s name and choose any email address, just incase that person has more than one email ID.

Better web and data usage Aanalysis

The new ICS update brings a native browser that is capable of opening up to 16 tabs and in that too user can choose to load the full desktop version of the webpage or mobile version. Lengthy pages can be saved for reading offline and the mobile web browser is said to incorporate an improved rendering engine.

At the month end while you wonder on heavy mobile bill, pay a visit to the new data usage analytics feature that brings controls to manage the network data usage. Set the mobile usage limit that will raise the flag when the consumption hits the pre-determined limits. Also users can manage background data consumption by narrowing down to respective apps. The mobile network data usage is represented using colorful and interactive charts.

Android Beam

Google has named the software side of the Near Field Communication enabling feature as Android Beam. Basically, two NFC-capable devices are to be tapped back to back for enabling exchange of digital data such as &#151 maps, links, music, photos, videos, etc. Even apps can be shared in a way that the recipient phone is taken directly to the Market link of the respective app.

Facelock and People App

Along with the unlock pattern feature, Google has added new face recognition based security feature for smartphone owners to keep their device secured. This feature makes use of the front facing camera to detect the face of the phone owner and only after valid recognition the lockscreen gets unlocked.

Finally a new People app will arrive that will have a bigger image of the contacts along with details and all will be placed as of one is watching a photo gallery.

Andy Rubin, senior vice president for Android at Google stated that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be rolled out once Galaxy Nexus is released. Google also confirmed that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update will also be made available for the Nexus S smartphone.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play now at Rs 21,000

0

Sony Ericsson has reduced the price of its gaming phone Xperia Play to Rs 21,000. Though this is not an official announcement, the company’s spokesperson said that it is in-line with the international price trend.

Xperia Play is a gaming phone with a dedicated game pad (similar to PSP) and a lot of exclusive games. And as with any content focused device, the revenue from selling content (in this case games) is more important than the retail price of the device.

With Xperia Play not selling as well as expected, Sony Ericsson is pushing the device by not just reducing its price but also by releasing new games. It already has 150 games for Xperia Play and has recently launched ‘Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light’ and ‘Lode Runner’ to this list.

When launched, Xperia Play was criticised for being over-priced and for having very few games. It was also criticised for being bulky and lacking terms of performance. However, many people also love the phone. And now with the problem of price and content rectified the device is certainly a must buy for even casual gamers as it is a decent smartphone with enough in specs to warrant this price. Gaming is an additional benefit.

The phone sports a 4 inch capacitive touchscreen, full PSP game controls, a 5 camera with flash, a front facing camera for video chat and Qualcomm’s 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. Besides, it has a dedicated Adreno 205 graphics processing unit and 1 of RAM.

Nokia mobile games with real objects

0

Nokia recently launched some (Near Field Communication) -enabled phones and now to take advantage of this new capability the company’s research centre has released a suite of casual games, termed as “tangible” mobile games. They use physical objects in the real world, and bring the natural and social fun of traditional family and party games into mobile gaming.

These games are a demonstration of how NFC opens up a whole new category of mobile games. However, if these games are successful they sure are going to usher a whole new dimension to the gaming industry, more than 3D could.

The first three games in the category are Nokia World Flags, Nokia Shakespeare Shuffle, and Nokia Nursery Rhyme Shuffle.

These games can be played on any Nokia Symbian NFC-enabled phone, including the Nokia C7-00, C7 Astound, 600, 603, 700, and 701.

The phone only needs to detect the tags. This means that aside from blank NFC tags (which you can order from some online sellers), you can also use NFC cards that you may already have in your wallet &#151 including ‘contactless’ or Metro card, office ID card etc. And, you can use the same tags or cards for any number of other tangible NFC games in future.

Nokia says, “We hope to publish these games to the Nokia Store soon, so your feedback would be very helpful. We are particularly curious to hear about how easy or hard it is to get enough tags or cards to play with in different places around the world”.

Nokia plans to introduce educational games, family games, and social games using this new concept. These first games may be simple, but think of them as just the first seeds or sprouts in a whole new field of games enabled by NFC.

0

With the update of Evernote, BlackBerry smartphone owners running BlackBerry OS5 and above will get all the improvements of this upgrade that include: offline note cache, that allows users to keep a local copy of the note created using the Evernote application on the deice itself even when there is no data connectivity. Apple planning a 7 inch iPad?

0

There have been numerous reports in the past about Apple considering a smaller iPad, which were immediately refuted by the company. Steve Jobs also had publicly clarified earlier he wasn’t interested in building a smaller iPad. But this time the news seems to be on a more solid footing. There is a news report from a Taiwan website which suggests Samsung and AU Optronics have sent smaller screen samples to Apple, probably for use in smaller iPad.

The iPad Mini will probably be launched by 2012, but that’s still at the rumour stage. The reason why Apple is thinking along these lines is probably because Kindle Fire is also being launched soon, which may not be an iPad killer but is affordable product which will create some competition for Apple.

According to The Mobile indian, Apple is planning an iPad 3 by early 2012. Now the two news reports may merge somewhere yet but we don’t know how and when. Apple seems to have calculated its options well, since the screen size is slightly bigger than 7 inch, it’s actually 7.85 inch which is likely to result in better images and lower prices at the same time.

The reported iPad Mini is probably to target emerging markets which are more price sensitive, but it is difficult to visualize how the cost would come down just by reducing the size of the screen. The Amazon Kindle Fire is anyway a subsidized device which will make money through content sales. May be Apple will focus more on iCloud services, but these reports should still be taken with a pinch of salt.

Foursquare to become easier to use than ever

0

Foursquare, a company that makes geolocation based app, plans to simplify user experience in their and plans to make it work more in the background when users are doing other things on their smartphones.

The days might soon be over when users had to deliberately launch the Foursquare app and check in to different locations manually, whenever they walked into, say, a restaurant or any other place.

The Foursquare functionality of checking into different locations has been incorporated into their products by Google, Facebook and Groupon as well, but the company has weathered it by making sure users get a better experience in the physical world.

The app now has about 10 million users worldwide who have checked into the app more than one billion times by now. The Merchant Platform of the app has seen about half a million businesses signing up with a view to promote their businesses and interaction with their customers.

The Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley was quoted by VentureBeat as saying, “We want to build tools that change the way all the people in this room experience the real world”.

Currently, the Foursquare app leads the category of location-based services despite its attempts to change the shape of its initial offering. In the meantime the company has survived the attacks from Facebook Places, Gowalla and Google Latitude. Dennis Crowley believes the new features in the app such as Foursquare Radar and Foursquare Explorer are likely to seen improved user adoption than ever.

The Foursquare founder agrees users have to think before they start using the app, and that it doesn’t come naturally to most. But using Foursquare in 5 would be much easier due to better integration of the app with the new version of Apple’s operating system, where using the app does not mean launching it separately.
