Top 5 apps to track lost smartphones

0

Gone are the days when people used to lose their phone and couldn’t do a thing to recover it. Now there are numerous “find my phone” apps in the market.

These apps use the phone’s (Global Positioning System) to track stolen and misplaced devices.

Plan B (Android)

The best thing to do is not to lose your phone, but once it’s gone, ‘Plan B’ kicks in. This has been created by the mobile security company Lookout. The beauty of the app is that users need not have it installed on the phone &#151 the app is installed on the web later when the phone is lost.

Once it has been installed through Android Market, it sends regular emails to the Gmail account of the user by showing the location of the phone on Google Maps. It keeps sending the updates for 10 minutes, and if the user is still unable to find the phone, he can use another phone to send a text message “locate” to his lost phone, and the process starts all over again.

Lookout (Android)

Lookout Mobile Security has a built-in phone locator which uses the GPS connection of the phone to find the current location of the device. When a phone is missing users just need to go to MyLookout.com from a computer and click on the locate button.

The app discloses the location of the phone within 10-15 feet of accuracy. Users also have the option of either setting-off the alarm, locking the phone, or even remotely wiping the data stored on the phone.

Find My iPhone (iOS)

Earlier a part of the MobileMe service from Apple, the Find My iPhone app is now a free service from the company. If the lost iPhone is switched on and is connected to the internet, users find their phone through the app, which shows the location of the app on Google Maps.

Users also have the option of displaying a message or of playing a sound on the device, or they can remotely wipe the data from the device &#151 all they have to do is access another device, and enter their Apple ID and password.

Seek Droid (Android)

The basic purpose of the Android app Seek Droid is to allow users to manage their phone remotely in case they lose their phone. It is a simple app which simply does the job it says it would do, and like other phone locator apps, the bulk of the work of the app is done by a website, in this case SeekDroid.com.

The website tells the user where his phone is , or the user can even find out about the last ten calls made from his phone, or play a loud alarm on his Android device. Those users who are worried someone may uninstall the app from the phone can choose to hide it. The good part about this app is that unlike other similar apps it doesn’t run in the background all the time to scan malware, so it is made for those users who are more worried about losing their phone.

Find My Phone (Windows Phone)

Find My Phone is a similar service for Windows Phone owners wherein users need to visit windowsphone.live.com and login with the same Windows Live ID they registered on their Windows phone. This free service can ring, lock, erase, or show the phone on a map from any computer.

Now a human cloud to help blind iPhone users

0

Those who say living without a phone is difficult may find there are people who really mean it. A new for blind people, VizWiz, may just end up changing their lives for the better.

There has been some development of assistive technologies such as speech-recognition in recent times. VizWiz takes these technologies to the next level by making use of a crowd cloud to help blind people.

The app believes that technology is fragile most of the time because of rapidly changing reality. OCR (optical character recognition) scanners find it difficult to read older and handwritten documents, and speech-recognition software programs do not understand accents well enough. VizWiz has tackled the problem differently. It depends on real human users to help blind people.

VizWiz is available on iPhone, and is a free application which enables blind users to take the help of remotely situated, visually able people to tackle their visual problems, such as telling them the colour of a T-shirt.

So, how does it work?
Blind users take a picture from their iPhone, speak a question into it and upload it to the app.

VizWiz volunteers examine the photo and send their answers back. In the trials conducted by the app developer, blind users found the app useful and it took them about 27 seconds on an average to get their answers from the human cloud. The fact that a human cloud would be answering visual questions has potential because even when the technology fails, human volunteers may still be able to pitch in with their solutions.

Google+ not mainstream yet, says research

0

Google+, the social network of internet giant Google, is yet to become a mainstream platform, social media traffic analysis firm SocMetrics has said.

During its study, SocMetrics concentrated on the mothers who, it believes, are key influencers for the growth of a social network. The traffic analysis firm believes the mothers have not taken up the new social network Google+ in a big way.

On the contrary, a recent report of Experian Hitwise, which studied 10 million online users, said that the new social network from Google was headed into the mainstream.

While Hitwise studied the actual traffic on the social networks for its research, SocMetrics instead studied social media mentions on blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube as well as Digg, Reddit and Disqus. There were about one million conversations detected by the study per day, out of which few thousand conversations were about Facebook or Google+.

It also found mostly people form industry such as technology or marketing were more talking about Google+ whereas in the mainstream conversations which included sports or style – Google+ presence was less. The study says the moms are more active on Twitter or Facebook compared to Google+ – their engagement on Google+ is about 30 to 50 per cent less, says the SocMetrics study.

The SocMetrics study concludes, “While the initial buzz is waning, Google+ still has a great opportunity ahead. It has enough attention, even with some mainstream groups like moms, photographers, book authors that are giving it a chance. Google needs to move quickly to capitalize on this window, though, before it continues waning. As the adage goes, “you only get one chance to make a first impression”. This is even more true in the age of social media.”

Mobile apps more popular than web apps

0

Smartphone apps are really a rage these days but if a report by Nielsen presents true picture, developers of mobile apps will be a worried lot. According to the Nielsen report, few apps outside the top 50 get much user attention.

Nielsen analysed the data from on-device meters installed on thousands of Apple and smartphones. (iOS data is not yet out), and the analyst found some very interesting patterns.

The average Android owner spends 56 minutes interacting with mobile applications and mobile websites every day. In that span of 56 minutes, about two-thirds of the time is spent on mobile applications, and one-third browsing the mobile Web.

Does that mean mobile web has a bleak future, well not really. This report is based on USA data, but in Indian and other developing market it is feature phones which dominate. As features phones do not support much of applications, it is the mobile web which takes precedence.

Nielsen says that the top 10 Android applications are responsible for 43 per cent of all the time spent by Android consumers on mobile apps. The top 50 apps account for 61 per cent of all time spent. That means that almost all the 2.5 lakh apps on the Android market see minimal use and vie for a pie of the remaining 39 minutes.

Current top 10 apps on Android are YouTube, Google Maps, Amazon Kindle, Facebook, Pandora, Angry Birds, Dragon Fly, Words with Friends, Advanced Task Killer, and Angry Birds Rio.
The top 10 paid apps are Cut the Rope, Beautiful Widgets, Fruit Ninja, PowerAMP Full, SwiftKey X, Robo Defense, Manager, Doodle Jump, SoundHound, and ADW Launcher.

Amongst these apps, 40 per cent are games and the rest are utility apps and media and social networking apps. There are few business apps even in the top 50.

The report definitely points that applications have more potential than the mobile web. So the device manufacturers need to focus on adding better support to their devices and operating system. Media planners will also have to revise their mobile advertising strategies.

What is good for the consumer is that with these findings out, we will get better phones with better application support and developers coming out with better apps and not just filling up the Android market (or any other app store) with just about any app.

Have MNP related complaint? TRAI is listening

0

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued notices to leading operators including Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Loop, Reliance Communications and Vodafone, for violating Mobile Number Portability regulations by overcharging and preventing the customers from changing their service provider.

“Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has initiated action by issuing show cause notices to service providers for violation of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Regulations 2009 and the same will follow due process,” said Milind Deora, Minister of State for Communications and IT, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

MNP service allows users to switch operators without changing their mobile number. Customers can send an to 1900 to request for a code which can be used to switch the operators. Though the regulations say that operators cannot over charge for this SMS, some operators were charging as much as Rs 10. This has been one of the reasons for the notice.

Regulator had on May 24 this year relaxed some norms so that requests are not rejected on trivial grounds. TRAI had issued direction to the operators specifying that rejection under contractual obligation can be done only if the post-paid connection comes with bundled handset with contractual obligation having exit clause and the subscriber has not complied with the same.

It also added the criteria of a corporate connection with contractual obligation having an exit clause and when the subscriber has not complied with the same.

Regarding outstanding payment it specified that if the due from the subscriber, in the previous paid bill, is less than Rs 10, then the service provider may include the same in the subsequent bill of the subscriber without any penal charges.

This move by the regulator proves that its listening, so next time you have a problem just send your feedback to TRAI.
