Google’s popular feed assimilator service, the Google Reader has been available in the form of an application on for quite some time now.

But there were certain features that were not liked a lot by the users and it was also found lacking some essential features.

In a bid to fix these, Google has now rolled out an update for the Google reader application on Android.

The new update gives a new look and feel to the application which assists smartphone users to read the content comfortably.

The updated application now features new buttons at the upper right of each post making it easier for the user to share or put a star mark on any post in the feed. Microsoft Fast Async service to bring multiplayer gaming on Windows Phone

0

The upcoming Mango update will bring a new service dubbed as Fast Async on Windows Phone that will offer better turn-by-turn based gaming or asynchronous multiplayer gaming experience, Geekwire has reported. Notably, Microsoft had detailed a number of new Xbox LIVE features with the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update.
According to the report, Fast Async service would be flexibly used across different Xbox LIVE platforms apart from Windows Phone. The Fast Async will be part of the Game Hub in the Mango update which is expected to release next month.

Last month we reported about Microsoft Research scientists working on the Switchboard for real-time multiplayer gaming. Cloud servers based Switchboard service was created to enable the smartphones to link with other devices for multiplayer gaming. Fast Async service appears to be a similar implementation of the cloud-based Switchboard service.

Detailing Fast Async service’s features, Microsoft said: “It’s a new Xbox LIVE service that improves gameplay for multiplayer, turn by turn (or asynchronous) Windows Phone games.”
Microsoft clarified that this service will expand the turn-by-turn based multiplayer gaming as well as asynchronous gaming experience so that Xbox LIVE games will be able to manage game data as well as sessions.

Further to that, Microsoft also added that the matchmaking service can be used from “any Xbox LIVE platforms, not just Windows Phones.” Basically, the Xbox LIVE platform will be featured on the desktop with deeper integration in next major operating system update – Windows 8. So Xbox LIVE games will be enjoyable and managed via three different screens – Windows Phone, Windows 8 and the Xbox 360 game console.

With the Games Hub, Microsoft is directly competing with the Apple’s Game Center on the platform. Google too will join the league; it has been working on a social gaming platform since a while. Along with the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update, Microsoft may release another system update for the Xbox 360 LIVE Dashboard for better compatibilities with the mobile devices.

Create time bound events with ‘We’re In’ app for Windows Phones

0

Microsoft has announced the new ‘We’re In’, a Bing for Windows Phone users. We’re In app from Bing works using the user’s Phonebook on the Windows Phone device and allows mapping locations and creating time-specific events. The app is available for Windows Phone from the Windows Marketplace.

Amidst several location based services, Microsoft Bing’s team has rolled out one that integrates Bing Maps. The new We’re In App is for people who love organizing meet-ups and hang-outs with close friends, relatives or colleagues. Using the We’re In app you can create an event and simply invite friends using their contact number from Phonebook.

In the invite you can specify the purpose of meeting in the Title box. You can also specify the time frame for location sharing – the upper limit is two hours at the moment. This invite can be sent via (standard rates apply). Users who don’t own a Windows Phone device but have an iOS, Android, BlackBerry or Symbian OS device can accept the invite and join via the mobile web.

Users who have accepted the invite and joined a specific event will appear on Maps and can see the locations of the attendees of the event. Do note that your location will be shared only with users who have been invited and it will be shared immediately after the invite has been accepted. This will help people who’ve been invited to know others’ whereabouts.

Users can also share status updates which are visible through the user tile on the map. Since the events are time bound, location sharing stops as soon as the event expires. However, you can go to the People tab (the small, people icon at the bottom of the screen) and tap on ‘Leave’ at any point if you wish to stop sharing your location with others.

We’re In is quite a handy app that respects user privacy and allows time bound events which auto-expire even if users forget to turn off location-sharing.

The We’re In app is currently available only on Windows Phone devices but will soon be available on other mobile platforms as well.

Not every Android smartphone comes with a File Explorer because every Android handset maker gives different custom skins to the smartphone. In that case, users are at times helpless if they wish to access different files on their device’s memory card.

Astro File Manager is an easy-to-use free application that provides a simple interface for managing different files – pictures, audio, video and other documents.

Astro File Manager free version from Android Market comes with ads and the Pro version key costs approximately Rs 181 and removes the ads in the app.

Do note that Astro File Manager is meant mostly for file management and avoid deleting any files you are not sure about for they may cause applications to crash.

Once you’ve downloaded and executed the there are a few steps that will get you started with file management on your Android device:

Copying/Moving Files

Step One
– Tap on the ‘Multi’ menu option at the top.

Step Two
– Select all the files/folders you wish to copy/move and the font colours of those file names will turn from white to orange.

You can select multiple files and folders by simply tapping on them. Tapping on the selected (orange colored) files will deselect them – just in case you selected files by mistake.

Step Three
– Tap on the ‘Move’ or Copy button on the top menu for the necessary task.

Step Four
– Hit the ‘Up’ option to navigate to the destination folder in which you wish to copy or move the selected files.

Step Four

Kinectimals to offer connectivity between Windows Phone and Xbox 360

0

Microsoft has decided to take the connectivity between its Windows Phone platform and Xbox 360 to the next level. Melissa Stewart of Microsoft confirmed to WPCentral that Kinectimals for Windows Phone now can be connected to the Xbox 360 version.

Kinectimals is a video game for the Xbox 360 where players can interact with virtual animals in a manner akin to pets, gameplay includes activities such as teaching tricks to the animal, guiding the animal around an obstacle course, and free-form play.

However, this doesn’t mean Windows Phone can be used simultaneously with Xbox 360. But, one can always export Kinectimals characters to the Windows Phone from Xbox 360.

Several Xbox 360 game console owners were interested to see how the Windows Phone integration would work. As the first step, Microsoft will enable exporting Xbox 360 game characters to the Windows Phone. It is too early to even expect of using Windows Phone device to control the Xbox 360 game console.

Melissa Stewart, the Microsoft representative, explained: “You can import your favourite pet to your Windows Phone from your Xbox 360 by simply holding the phone up to the TV screen and capturing the QR code from the pet. The phone will recognise the code and add the pet to the mobile experience. Players can export their favourite mobile pets into their Kinect for Xbox 360 Kinectimals game by holding their Windows Phone up to their Kinect sensor which will read the QR code assigned to their pet and add it to their console experience. If players are logged onto their WP and Xbox 360 consoles with the same Xbox LIVE credentials, this process will happen automatically.”

Microsoft may bring simultaneous usage of Windows Phone 8 with Xbox 360 in the much anticipated Windows Phone 8 Apollo mobile operating system expected sometime late next year.

Facebook inside Xperia Play to have games

0

The Facebook inside Xperia feature on Xperia Play will soon allow users to recommend their favourite games instantly on the social network from the Smartphone.

Sony Ericsson added the Facebook inside Xperia feature to the Xperia Play device some time back. The feature allows users to share, like and connect on Facebook in a faster and easier way which is not possible through an application or through website.

Though the date of the launch of the games is yet not finalised but Sony Ericsson aims at bringing this feature to all Xperia Play smartphones across the globe as soon as possible perhaps in the form of another upgrade that will follow the upgrade 2.3.3.

After the update, Xperia Play users will also be able to upload screenshots, top scores and even achievements from various games right on to Facebook from the home screen of the smartphone.

Nokia Sleeping screen gets updated

0

Nokia Sleeping Screen application, which allows Symbian S6o ^3 users to change their sleeping screen to something more colourful than the ordinary clock, has received an update.

With the new update, Nokia Sleeping screen gets a totally new identity as along with the older stock interfaces. Nokia users are now also allowed to use their own custom images as the sleeping screen. The images will not appear the way they appear in the real world but the software will modify the images and convert it in to something similar to what the stock images looked like.

The Nokia Sleeping Screen was first launched in April as an experimental application.
Nokia developers have added a plain looking clock to the sleeping screen that makes more space available on the screen since users now will be using a lot of custom images. Along with that new stack themes or images for the sleeping screen have been added to the application if users want to use them. And finally the missing link, the orientation change for the sleeping screen has now been enabled so now with the change in the orientation of the phone the sleeping screen also changes the orientation which was obviously missing earlier.

The sleeping screen is available at the Nokia beta labs as a public beta and all those who want to use this on their Symbian^3 devices can download it directly from the Nokia Beta Labs or can follow the link.
Nokia is looking for more suggestion and comments about this so if you have a query or suggestion to make any other improvement that might be helpful to other users then please share the same on the beta lab.

Music streaming service for BlackBerry coming soon

0

Research In Motion (RIM) will soon launch its own music streaming service for the BlackBerry users. The move is clearly aimed at shoring up its position in the mobile business in the face of threats from companies like Apple and Google. The company is negotiating with several music labels such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music, Warner Music Group and Group, says a Reuters report.

The new music streaming service of RIM has not been named yet. It is expected to work on top of the BlackBerry Messenger service which was already in news recently for the permission to developers to add its social features in their apps. The BlackBerry Messenger is likely to face challenges soon from similar services by Apple, Google and Facebook.

While the BlackBerry users currently do not have the ability to buy their music directly through the phone, they do have access to several music player apps including Slacker, Rhapsody and Pandora. RIM’s PlayBook tablet has 7digital’s cloud based music store pre-installed in the tablet. The BlackBerry devices or the PlayBook tablet owners can also sync their devices with their computers to get their music tracks.

Something similar to this has already been announced by Apple in the form of iCloud which is likely to be launched with the 5. The iOS 5 will launch a feature which will be known as “iTunes in the Cloud” which will allow users to access their music from all their devices. The iCloud will also allow the users to upload just a portion of the track which will then be replaced by a high quality music track from the Apple library.
