Amazon wants iOS developers to port apps to Kindle

Amazon is wooing Apple developers to port some apps to Kindle, according to reports.

According to the report , Amazon seems to be especially interested in educational apps.

Amazon’s Kindle is well known for its battery life and E-ink technology used on the screen, which doesn’t put a lot of strain on the eyes of the users.

At the same time, the screen is black and white and the contents refresh a bit slowly.

For educational or reference apps, the device is just right which Amazon wants to expand on. For the same reason, games do not look especially good on the Kindle device.

Kindle is a developed platform and it should not find it difficult to attract the developers to itself. There are several options open to the company.

Also, since Kindle already runs on Linux operating system, it can easily adopt the operating system.

Amazon’s Kindle anyway does not compete directly with the regular tablets, instead its direct competition is with Barnes and Noble’s Nook Color. If Kindle has to compete with Nook Color, it may offer colour screen and may convert itself into an Android tablet.

But the black and white screen has its own benefits, the most important being longer battery life.

Another option before Kindle may be to offer a colour tablet to the users, and continue with the existing Kindle models in the market, as well.

Intex launches new phone with Office files projection feature

Days after Spice launched its projector mobile phone, Indian handset maker Intex has come up with a new projector phone, the V.SHOW Mini Theatre (IN 8809).

It is the successor of Intex V.SHOW, which according to the company, was “India’s first mobile phone with in-built projector”.

The phone is a dual GSM handset with an in-built projector that can display films, videos, photographs, and web portals apart from Office files (Power Point, Excel, Text and PDF).

It has a 3.5 mm jack and external converter cable to connect it to speakers.

The and WAP enabled phone also has an FM radio and with A2DP. Its of 87 is expandable to 16 GB.

Other features of V.SHOW Mini Theatre include video playability in multiple formats (3GP/MP4/AVI up to 25 frames per second), video recording (AVI up to 10 FPS), audio player (MP3, AMR or WAVE) and an Intex Zone comprising of Facebook, Google, a mobile tracker, auto call record, answering machine and games.

At the launch, Rajendra Gupta, general manager of telecom sales at Intex, said, “Intex V.SHOW Mini Theatre IN 8809 &#151 our second offering in the market with in-built projector presents an ideal combination of entertainment and utility. Catering to a wider range of audience, the phone is capable and highly affordable to strike a chord with the masses for their communication, entertainment, training and information sharing needs.”

It is priced at Rs 6,300.

Transfer as well as ask for Talk-Time

Uninor has launched “Talk Time Transfer” service for its customers in Bihar and Jharkhand.

This facility allows Uninor pre-paid subscribers to transfer as well ask for to their family, friends or associates in-case of a requirement.

The good part of the service is that you can make a request for talktime transfer (from your friends/family members) even when you do not have talk time left in your account. This is particularly important when you can’t even give a missed call to get a call back (even incoming is not free while roaming).

Subscribers can transfer balance amounts ranging from a minimum of Rs 5 to a maximum of Rs 50 at one go; on any given day a maximum of seven such transactions are allowed.

This facility is available only between two Uninor mobile numbers of Bihar (and Jharkhand) circle, and can be done anywhere in the country.

To transfer amount between Rs 5 to Rs 50 subscriber has to dial *202**#.

Talktime can be asked by dialing * 201**#.

Every successful transfer of talk-time would be intimated through to both the parties and Rs 2 will be deducted as processing fee from the amount transferred.

Subscriber has to do minimum of two recharges while being there in Uninor network, before being able to use the balance transfer functionality.

Alok Shankar, circle business head, Bihar and Jharkhand, said, “There are a number of circumstances when people run out of sufficient balance and in such a situation of emergency; they can take advantage of this ‘Talktime Transfer’ facility. We are quite confident that this service will be extremely useful to subscribers and will help them stay in touch even with minimal balance.”

Uninor has already launched a similar service in their Karnataka circle.

Amazon launches cloud player for Android

Amazon has launched its cloud based music player that lets anyone upload music to the company’s server and play it later via the web or devices.

Users need not sign up for the cloud player as a separate service. All they need to do is log on to the cloud music player with Amazon credentials.

Samsung is set to launch it latest mobile phone, the Nexus S, on 8th April in India. Infibeam has been chosen as the pre booking partner for the Nexus S and is taking bookings for this phone, which is priced at of Rs 27,000.

The Nexus S runs on the latest version of the operating system, the Gingerbread (Android 2.3). With a 1 GHz arm cortex and dedicated graphics, it is expected to be an absolute delight for the user.

Nokia coming up with T series phones?

After experimenting with X, C, E and N ranges of phones, Finnish handset maker Nokia is now probably coming up with T series devices.

The first phone is named T7-00.

MobileGuruji Blogger broke the news and said, “This leak came via Ovi Publisher tools and the device is listed in Symbian^3 devices.”

T7-00, however, will not be a tablet (as assumed because of the “T”), but a smartphone, and may come with different branding.

It is expected to have a screen of 360 x 640 pixels along with GPRS, Edge, WCDMA and support, and Wifi radios, and two soft keys.

Some also presumed it to have a 3.5 to 4 inch touchscreen display.

T7-00 will likely feature a 3.2 mega or better camera. The Symbian^3 device may run version 7.3, which is the same version as listed for the X7.

Nothing more than the above is known at this point.

Apple working on iOS Maps

Apple wants to ‘radically’ improve its location-based services, job postings on the iPhone maker’s website suggest.

“Come work for the team that revolutionised the mobile technology industry as it continues [to] define what computing looks like in a post-PC era,” read an announcement for two positions of ‘iOS Maps Application Developer’ on Apple’s website.

“The Maps team is looking for an exceptional developer to join us in our mission to radically improve how people interact with maps and location-based services,” it added.

The current maps application from uses Google Map tiles. It is speculated that MobileMe (subscription based online services from Apple) are probably being overhauled, and the job listings could be related to that.

Some time ago, Apple acquired Placebase, a Google Maps competitor. At that time it was speculated that Apple would soon cut off its ties with Google Maps, but that didn’t happen.
iOS Maps continued to use Google Maps tiles, though these were slightly inferior to the maps available on new devices. iOS Maps didn’t provide offline maps or turn-by-turn directions. It seems all this is set to change now.

Placebase has the speciality of adding private and public data to maps, which may give a distinct advantage to iOS Maps.

On the other hand, Microsoft has access to Navteq, a map service of Nokia. This is thanks to its alliance with the Finnish handset maker.
