Test Drive Amazon apps on your browser before buying

0

Test Drive is a phrase that makes you think of vehicles. Now, even device owners can try their hand at various applications before they pay for it, thanks to the new Test Drive feature introduced on Amazon AppStore.

Users can run apps in a simulator in the with the help of their mouse. All they have to do after selecting the is to click on the ‘Test Drive Now’ button.

On other platforms, users can download a trial version of the app, which involves data charges. This is not the case on Amazon AppStore.

Test Drive is an innovative approach used by Amazon AppStore to sell apps. It is currently offered only to USA based users.

Customers are allowed to Test Drive the full version of an app for 30 minutes, after which they have to decide whether they want to buy it.

Currently, only 20 different apps provide the Test Drive facility, and the company intends to introduce this feature for other apps soon.

Android AppStore has been lagging behind Apple in the application approval process and in terms of total number of apps. Now Amazon AppStore has come out with Test Drive, but still has to prove it is ahead of Android’s open market approach which lets the market decide how good an app is.

However, Google is not comfortable with dealing in license issues, whereas Amazon is completely at home with it. There is an outside chance that due to competitive pressure even Apple may be driven to offer a similar feature to users.

But we have to remember, Apple has rarely followed its competitors; it follows its own heart in the market. In the end, more than being a competitor, Amazon AppStore may end up benefiting Google and its Android platform.

Various service providers such as Spice digital have also tied up with music content providers such as Phonographic Performance Limited to provide exclusive content to the people.

Google to make Nexus Tablet

After the Nexus One and Nexus S smartphones, Google is reportedly looking to create an Nexus tablet.

According to information picked up by Russian blog site Mobile-Review, Google is looking to create an Android Nexus tablet and LG is said to be handling the actual manufacturing (Google English Translation).

Google’s Nexus One and Nexus S smartphones have native Android operating systems without any modifications or adition, which usually third part manufacturers do.

And, it seems that Google is trying the same model with Tablet, whereas it will manufacture a tablet device with native Android 3.0 Honeycomb in place.

The new tablet would most likely run a clean version of Android 3.0 Honeycomb and could hit the market by mid-summer or early fall, said Mobile-Review.

However, there are certain people who think that this device could not be meant for end consumers and Google is manufacturing it to test the Android platform developments.

However going by the history, Goggle first got Nexus one manufactured by HTCand then recently introduced Nexus S manufactured by Samsung. This could very well be the next big device from Google.

Amazon eyes No 1 spot in Android ecosystem

0

Amazon’s game plan is becoming clearer now. It already comes armed with a store which is giving Apple a good competition. And with the recent launch of Cloud Drive and Cloud Player, it is now stepping up the heat.

It is in fact, beginning to compete directly with the Market itself, gradually phasing it out in the process.

Amazon is providing more features to the users than the Android Market does. Take the Test Drive for example, which allows users to actually use the on a simulator on their computer browser. This shows how good Amazon is with actually selling a product to the consumers.

The process of Android domination by Amazon began when it launched the Kindle app. Although the same app was introduced on all the other platforms, Amazon had kept Android in the center. As the Android platform grew in size, the book sales from Kindle also jumped. Needless to say, Amazon used the retail opportunity provided by Android really well.

The gradual progress of the Amazon bouquet of services grew with Amazon AppStore. Amazon also brought its typical promotions along, including the ‘free app of the day’ which is more popular than the original Android Market.

The Amazon march continued with the launch of Amazon cloud player. So whatever the users choose to do, they can do it with Amazon be it books, music or apps. Add the integration of app store with the platform itself, and the possibility that Amazon may be working on its own tablet, the Amazon game plan suddenly begins to look formidable.

That doesn’t mean that there are no holes in the Amazon plan. While installing the Android AppStore, Android users have to disable the security setting on Android tablet. It also means the users can install any other app store on the device too. Amazon needs to work on the security feature to assure users that they can continue to use the Amazon services safely in the future.

Windows Phone to be world No 2 by 2015: IDC

0

The operating system is all set to be the leading mobile operating system this year itself, whereas the Nokia Microsoft deal may help Windows Phone to become the world number two mobile operating system by 2015, according to the International Data Corporation.

“Android is poised to take over as the leading smartphone operating system in 2011 after racing into the number 2 position in 2010,” said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team.

“For the vendors who made Android the cornerstone of their smartphone strategies, 2010 was the coming-out party. This year will see a coronation party as these same vendors broaden and deepen their portfolios to reach more customers, particularly first-time smartphone users,” Llamas added.

Android is likely to stay at the top spot whereas the Symbian market share will reduce to 0.2 per cent in 2015. The number two position will be captured by Windows Phone and its market share will be at 20.9 per cent, IDC has predicted.

Many technology bloggers have not taken kindly to the report, as they just cannot fathom how Windows Phone 7 may go on to become number two.

The IDC data suggests it has simply added the numbers of Symbian and Windows Phone platforms, assuming that Symbian users will migrate to the Windows platform.

Firefox 4 now on Android

After launching a PC version some time back, Firefox 4 for mobiles has been released on devices.

Along with standard tabbed browsing and Firefox add ons, the new Firefox 4 features a whole new overhauled Java engine that increases browsing speed, which the company claims is three times faster than what the default Android is capable of.

Some unique additions to the mobile browser include Firefox Sync, which allows the mobile browser on the Android device to share bookmarks and history, and even see open tabs with the synced computer.

Social media has also become important and comes as an integral part of the browser. Just by pressing a button for long users will be able to post content on various social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and so on.

Swype based typing and pinch to zoom have also been added to make browsing easier and faster. And to economise on the valuable smartphone screen space Firefox 4 mini can hide controls when they are not in use.

Firefox 4 is now available for download from Android Market. Users who wish to install it can visit the marketplace from their smartphone or they can follow the link to download it directly.

USA developing ‘panic button’ for cellphones

With pro-democracy campaigns engulfing many parts of the world, triggering rampant crackdowns by security forces in the respective countries, a news application is being developed that will let people wipe out the address book on their phones and send emergency alerts to others.

The ‘panic button’ is being developed by the government of USA.

According to reports, the special application can be activated if the smartphone is confiscated by security authorities.

“If the Secret Police starts firing tear gas grenades and breaking down your door, you can run the panic app, and your cellphone will send out a message to your networking letting them know that you’re in a bit of a pickle. It will then wipe out all your personal data to keep your friends safe, and lock itself out with a screen displaying a picture of Uncle Sam giving the finger,” a report read.

Cell phones have played a crucial role in the successful revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt.

The USA wants to equip activists with new tools to fight their repressive governments and is targeting countries from the Middle East to China, according to the Daily Mail.

Only a few cellphones can send an emergency SOS message to others now and this feature is limited as well. SOS signals from such phones can only be sent to a few chosen persons.

Nokia releases new font

0

The rebranding effort by Nokia has begun with a new font. Earlier, the company was using the font Nokia Sans which has now been replaced with Nokia Pure, said the company in a blog post.

“The letters flow into each other somewhat, creating the impression of forward movement. The idea of flow and movement appears frequently in the new branding,” Nokia said in the blog.

The new font will be displayed through advertisements and Nokia devices this year itself.

The new typeface was designed by Bruno Maag, a typographic designer based in London. The Nokia Pure font has specially been designed for cellphones and other digital display devices.

Nokia perhaps is trying to create a trendy outlook of itself with the changing world. The old Nokia font was very simple, and the only problem with it was that it quickly became outdated.

The ideas for the font were drawn by the Nokia team along with Bruno Maag, and what came out is a simple but different typeface.

The style of the font has been kept such that even when the Nokia name is written in Arabic, the users should be able to recognise the company from the font style itself.

New app to share your photos easily

0

Photo sharing is set to become a lot easier with the new Color application that allows users to exchange photos within a distance of 150 feet.

The app was created by Bill Nguyen, who has also founded Lala, a digital music streaming service.

Since it requires users to be located within physical proximity of each other, the Color app may also help build smaller real world communities.

It is available free of cost on both and devices. Launched last week, this is now among the 30 most popular free apps on the Apple iTunes Store.

The possible uses of the app are numerous. Take a concert hall, for example, where one photographer cannot take pictures from all the angles at a time. In that case, a group of users can take pictures from various angles simultaneously and then share photos with each other using this app.

However, you cannot share pictures with people if they do not have Color. The app’s creators are to issue an update to address the problem soon.

Users are demanding some changes in the privacy settings of the app too. Right now people cannot pick and choose their followers. It’s the app that decides who your friends are depending on the locations you frequently visit.

With this feature, the only problem is that if a person is stalking you, the app may make his task easier.

Other users can be blocked on Color, but it is not easy to find out who is viewing your files.

On the positive side, it may help you know your neighbours better &#151 an art that people have forgotten over time.
