Nokia prepares to launch new C3-01 in India

0

Nokia plans to launch its latest smartphone based on the older Symbian S40 operating system. Called Nokia C3-01, the phone will be released in India by the end of March.

Nokia said in a Twitter post that the company will launch this device by the end of the first quarter of the year, but has not mentioned the price of the phone. Market speculation and mobile experts, meanwhile, expect it to cost around Rs 9,000 or less.

There seems to be absolutely no reason why Nokia has chosen to use the S40 operating system in a new device. Symbian S40 appeared for the first time in 2002. At that time it supported 128 x 128 displays. Over time, though, the user interface of S40 has evolved and it now supports up to (320×240 pixel) on smartphones.

C3-01 has a candy bar form factor and a shiny steel body which is just 11 mm thick. It has a 2.4 inch QVGA display, a 5 mega pixel camera with flash, an alpha-numeric keypad, and integrated and Wifi for wire free connectivity.

LTE ready for action

0

Auctions for BWA (broadband wireless access) spectrum were held soon after the auction took place last year. While 3G services have already started rolling, we are yet to see action on the BWA front.

Consumers are yet to see high speed wireless data services which BWA promised. The primary reason for delay has been that operators chose a technology (LTE) which was yet to mature as they found it more future proof compared to the alternative — WiMax.

The WiMax camp claimed that the ecosystem would take at least two years to mature, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with 63 LTE capable consumer devices already available in the market, according to the Global Mobile Supplier Association. This has made it easier for operators to decide which technology to bet on.

Soon after the auctions took place, there was a fierce battle between the LTE and WiMax camps, but most operators are reported to have chosen LTE as it is backward compatible with 3G and 2G technologies, which WiMax isn’t.

This is an important consideration for operators across the world as it means that their LTE consumers can venture into areas where only 2G or 3G networks are available, and yet stay connected.

Network suppliers such as Ericsson, Qualcomm and Nokia Siemens Networks have already successfully demonstrated their LTE technologies, and now with devices readily available, it is a matter of time before BWA services are launched in India.

Aircel has said that it will roll out BWA services in the country by the end of the year. A Reliance Infotel executive earlier informed us that the company would launch BWA within the first half of the year. Reliance Infotel, which is the only service provider with a pan India BWA spectrum, is reported to have selected LTE for its network. Qualcomm also participated in the auction just to support LTE, a technology that it has invested in. Although Aircel has not confirmed its choice, it is also expected to go with LTE.

Microsoft and Nokia tie-up

0

For quite sometime we have been hearing a lot of speculations and rumors about Nokia and Microsoft coming together to set up a new smartphone business? Well that’s not a speculation anymore as Nokia and Microsoft have officially entered into a strategic partnership which according to them will benefit each other in the times to come.

In a joint statement Stephen Elop and Steve Ballmer, CEO’s of Nokia and Microsoft respectively said, “Today in London, our two companies announced plans for a broad strategic partnership that combines the respective strengths of our companies and builds a new global mobile ecosystem. The partnership increases our scale, which will result in significant benefits for consumers, developers, mobile operators and businesses around the world. We both are incredibly excited about the journey we are on together”.

The core philosophy behind these two giants coming together is ‘Why to fight when both can coexist in the same environment’ .

As per the statement by Nokia and Microsoft, they will now be working towards utilising the expertise of both the companies for achieving a common benefit of serving the masses with quality product and services.

Some of the things that people can look forward to are; Nokia adopting Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform, Nokia Maps to be a core part of Microsoft’s mapping services and Nokia’s content and application store to be integrated with Microsoft Marketplace.

HP launches Veer, Palm Pre3 smartphones, and TouchPad tablet

HP has launched three new products at a event. These are HP Veer, Palm Pre3 and a tablet called TouchPad. HP Veer is a tiny touchscreen smartphone, whereas Palm Pre3 is an extension of the existing Palm Pre series.

All these devices can sync data among each other so that users can make the transition between them smoothly.

With HP’s Synergy feature, users just have to sign into their Google, Facebook, Yahoo, LinkedIn or Microsoft Exchange accounts and the information will populate the phone or the TouchPad tablet itself, and will be updated continuously, which means users don’t need to make extra effort to access their email, or other social site information.

While other companies build larger smartphones, HP has gone compact with Veer. The device has all the power of a regular smartphone, but is smaller in size. It has a sliding keypad also, as well as flash support. The company has still not disclosed the price of Veer.

HP’s Palm Pre3, on the other hand, seems to be just an update to the already familiar Palm Pre, though it also has one of the largest WebOS phone keyboards yet. It has a powerful 1.4 GHz Qualcomm processor, and can shoot video as well. In terms of memory, 8 and 16 GB models are available, and connectivity options include HSPA+ and Wifi.

The WebOS interface has been improved for the TouchPad, and with users being able to group tasks together, multitasking has become easier. HP says that unlike tablets, which are designed to be fun to work on, TouchPad has been designed for mobile productivity. It is meant to be a standalone product as well as a companion to the smartphone, and yes, even tablet users can access and send messages from their WebOS tablet.

INQ launches Cloud Touch, the next version of Facebook phone

The handset Cloud Touch from INQ (pronounced as ink) comes with some deep Facebook integration. It is targeted at teenagers who are mostly crazy about texting with friends, and those who spend most part of their day on Facebook.

The company is also known for launching the first phone which was endorsed by Mark Zuckerberg. So naturally, while talking about the phone, if users get carried away about the Facebook part of it, it’s understandable but the keyboard technology used in the phone should not be forgotten. Don’t look for Facebook branding also, though there is a dedicated key to access Spotify, the music streaming service.

It runs on Android Froyo (better than the previous BREW application platform) and has a built in music streaming service Spotify as well. The moment users unlock the phone, they’ll notice the constantly updating news feed and the fact that they can write on someone’s wall via the same menu. They can also call any friend just by tapping on the profile photo of that friend.

Those who have worked with SwiftKey and know about the Fluency engine, will know how its keyboard works. For others, the screen predicts what possible sentences the users might be typing, and they just have to make the selection to type it. It’s also important to mention the keyboard because the very concept of INQ Cloud Touch is completely typing oriented.

The company behind SwiftKey and Fluency, TouchType, had presented its primary typing concept product on prototype tablet also, but they were trying to strike deals with various companies at the same time. TouchType, however, makes it clear that the keyboard in INQ Cloud Touch is its own, though they have used consulting advice from TouchType and licensed the prediction engine for it.
