Nokia Windows 7 phones at maximum price points

0

Nokia and Microsoft will produce smartphones at more price points than other smartphone brands do. The two companies have announced a partnership wherein Nokia will use Windows 7 operating system as the only smartphone platform.

Steve Balmer, the chief executive officer of Microsoft, said on Nokia’s blog, “Together we will reach more price points than any other smartphone platform.”

This means that Nokia Windows 7 phones will be available at less than Rs 10,000 in the Indian market, since there are phones that cost much below this price.

Steven Elop, the chief executive officer of Nokia, said, “Nokia will use several services that Microsoft today offers including search and advertising, apart from the Windows platform, and we will also work towards adding features to Windows 7 platform.”

He further added, “We will continue to invest in research to create the next disruption.” He was referring to services that will have the potential to create new markets in future.

Engadget too has revealed what it claims is the Nokia Windows 7 concept. If these are signs of things to come, the future certainly looks exciting. It also means that both the companies have already spent significant time on the products of the partnership.

Android market security issue

0

With the world rejoicing about the launch of Google’s latest marketplace for Android, little do people know that it can be a big risk to personal information and security.

With the remote install feature that has recently been added to Market, new security threats have cropped up. Now, any application can be remotely downloaded and installed on Android devices; all the user needs is a linked Google account–which is the main source of threat. Earlier, all permissions were limited to the device only, but now the marketplace is online, and with Google’s single sign-in process, it has become easier for cyber criminals to do their trick.

Once an application is downloaded, the Android Market asks for permission only once, and after that, no further notification is given by applications, which gives them a dangerous amount of freedom since they can be used to compromise a single Google login and, in turn, all your personal data, which can also be used to make unauthorised purchases from the Android store.

Security software developer Kaspersky has advised Android users through a blog post to create stronger passwords for their Google accounts and to be careful while giving permission to applications.

Low cost iPhone in the works

It has been reported that Apple is quietly working on creating a new low cost version of iPhone, in an attempt to directly challenge the market dominance of in this segment. The new device is likely to cost about $200 (approx Rs 9,200), according to Bloomberg. The phone is likely to be somewhat smaller than iPhone 4 but may support a universal in which the users would be able to change their network without physically changing their SIM card.

Android is growing continuously in the budget smartphone segment, and it recently overtook the Symbian platform as the most popular smartphone operating system. Apple believes it is a high volume market and sees an opportunity for itself here. Earlier the company used to target the top end of the market only, and now it has decided to go for the 100 per cent, according to Bloomberg.

Apple has refused to comment on the speculation whereas the report itself says the device may be out in the market this July. It is reported that the iPhone mini will not have a home button. Curiously, the leak has arrived at the same time when Nokia is also announcing its new strategy.

Chances of Apple offering low cost iPhones increased vastly after the success of low cost LG Optimus Series phones. Apple would be able to penetrate the international market better with the help of low cost iPhones. There also remains a possibility that some carriers may offer the smaller iPhones for free if the users agree for a contract with them. Bloomberg hedged its bets by saying that Apple at times works on products which don’t get released at all.

Airtel Africa’s virtual debit card: a world first

0

Mobile phones have been transformed into so many things — from the core conversation platform into mini computers, to books, wallets, and now, into credit cards.

Airtel Africa, Standard Chartered Bank and MasterCard have announced an arrangement that will enable mobile phone users to make online purchases from merchants around the world.

Called the world’s first virtual card, Airtel 1time Shopping Card operates as a wallet residing in a mobile phone. It generates a 16 digit number at the user’s request, and this number can be used to make a financial transaction. When the transaction is complete, a confirmation message is sent to the consumer’s handset.

“This launch of the world’s first virtual number on a mobile card marks a big milestone in mobile commerce,” Manoj Kohli, the international chief executive officer and joint managing director of Airtel, said.

Though launched in Africa, the possibility of similar services coming to other parts of the world can’t be ruled out, especially in India as it is Airtel’s home turf. Current regulations do not allow such services in India. Besides, mobile wallets can be used to store only up to Rs 5,000 in India, so this service would not make much sense anyway. However, the mobile payment system in India is gaining momentum with two of the largest operators in partnerships with two large banks for creating mobile banking services.

The second opportunity that this service presents is the ability to turn the mobile phone into a full-fledged credit card. Operators can provide a platform that works as a credit card such as Airtel 1time, and can make use of the billing platform they already possess.

Mobile networks can also be used to push advertisements and special offers to people, who can immediately make purchase decisions thanks to this virtual card.

Airtel recently launched Airtelmoney, a mobile wallet service, in Gurgaon, Haryana. The virtual card can be extended to Airtelmoney users as well, though officially there is no word on this.
