Mig33 launches a mobile social cricket game

0

Mig33, a mobile social networking platform, has launched a cricket game. In this Cricket game, the objective is to be the best cricket player for your team by scoring the most runs before getting out.

The game is a chat-based cricket card game in which users draw different cards with different cricket outcomes. Players join the game by paying with mig33 credits. Some cards add score while others cause the player to ‘get out’.

If you draw a ‘run’ card, the runs are added to your overall score, but if you draw an ‘out’ card — you could even go out for a duck!

To make the game even more interesting, there is also a 3rd Umpire card which exempts a player from going out the following time they draw an ‘out’ card during the game. The player who stays in the game longest, and scores the most runs, is declared the winner.

Mohit Gundecha, director of business development and head of India operations says, “There is heightened excitement around cricket. The community plays, exchanges cricket mementos and discusses the game in chat rooms too. ”

migCricket is available to all members of mig33. The game is available to users via a mobile download(m.mig33.com) or web access( www.mig33.com).

In India, mig33 is the most-downloaded free application on Airtel’s Store. It allows users to form chat communities, share photos, send gifts, play games, post on each others profiles, join groups, create avatars and much more. It is optimized to work on practically any internet enabled mobile phone in India, even low-end handsets.

Company claims that mig33 is used extensively to connect its wide-spread community of Indians to their homeland. For example, many native Gujaratis in Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa connect with locals in their hometowns in Gujarat via mig33.

Smartphone security woes

0

With the advent of smartphones, human lives have become a whole lot simpler. Nowadays, people carry their whole world in their smartphones — be it their pictures, music, or contacts, and with the adoption of applications, their bank accounts and money as well. Carrying so much in such a small device is certainly ingenious, but has a long list of security issues to it — issues related to personal information, bank account information, monetary transaction details, personal photographs, documents and so on. So, losing a smartphone means jeopardising all of this data.

Many security service providers have developed special software that helps you remotely wipe your smartphone in case it is lost. Application providers and developers claim that software requires authentication before it is activated, but since it’s inconvenient to remember passwords, people usually choose the ‘Remember me’ option while signing into an app.,

If stolen, your smartphone can be used to make purchases using your application account as most stores today charge the mobile number rather than a credit card. Some banking applications can compromise your bank account and transactions too. Even in the case of mpay and mwallet, which require authentication, there is a big chance that the details might be among your messages, which can easily be hacked.

There are many applications available in the market that claim to safeguard your data or even remotely wipe your phone clean of data in case of loss or theft, but the only downside to those applications is that they don’t work without a since they require network connectivity.

So, the only way out of all this is that you keep a check on what all information is stored on your smartphone because if it is not there, then you cannot lose it. So, while storing data on your phone, always make sure that you don’t save anything that is confidential. Many applications prompt users to remember login details on the smartphone, which should be avoided. And, one must remember to delete all transaction SMSs, particularly those that contain personal identification numbers.

MeeGo not dead; Intel still keen

0

MeeGo, an open source smartphone operating system that was the result of a partnership between Nokia, Intel, the Linux Foundation and 25 other companies (device manufactures and developers,) suffered a blow when Nokia dumped it to choose Windows 7 as its principal smartphone platform. However, Intel is still not backing out, saying that Nokia was just a part of the alliance and that MeeGo is a product of the Linux Foundation.

Intel will showcase a tablet and a smartphone based on MeeGo during the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2011, a mobile trade event in Barcelona.

MeetMeego’s YouTube channel has a video snapshot of a tablet based on the OS. While we do not know the tablet’s details, the video shows a very smooth user interface.

The MeeGo platform is very important for Intel as it wants to be a force in the tablet and mobile space, where it currently has no foothold. MeeGo is designed ground up to support Intel’s Atom family and other new mobile processors from the company such as Oak Trail. Intel will definitely use its clout amongst device manufacturers such as Fujitsu (also part of the MeeGo alliance,) to use the platform to produce smartphones and tablets.

Sony Ericsson wants to be no 1 in Android smartphones

If Sony Ericsson says it wants to be the number 1 smartphone maker in the world, there are reasons for people to take the company seriously.

Sony Ericsson is a joint venture between the Japanese electronics company Sony and Swedish company Ericsson. For the most part, the company has concentrated on creating high end phones for the European and Asian markets, though it could never manage to have a strong presence in the USA.

The company nurtures ambitious plans and wants to number one in Android space, Sony Ericsson’s chief executive officer Bert Nordberg told Cnet. During the interview, he also talked about the highly anticipated Xperia Play, also known as the Sony PlayStation phone. The smartphone runs on Android and is being perceived as the flagship Sony Ericsson smartphone in the USA. Sony Ericsson generated quite a wave by airing an advertisement of the phone during the Super Bowl games broadcast, after which a major USA carrier’s chief executive officer himself called Bert Nordberg to ask when his network could have the phone.

Nordberg also said that Sony Ericsson would focus on Android. The company plans to produce twice as many Android smartphones this year as compared to last year, and perceives itself as an important part of the Android ecosystem.

Although Sony Ericsson has worked on the Windows Phone 7 platform in the past, it does not see itself as a big supporter of the OS. Nordberg further points out that he would have been more worried if Nokia had decided to go with Android, as that would have meant competition for Sony Ericsson.

There has been a lot of speculation about the fate of Symbian after Nokia and Microsoft announced a partnership to use Windows 7 as the primary platform for Nokia smartphones.

Nokia has now clarified that the development of Symbian will continue, and that devices that were developed earlier will be launched in the coming days as per schedule. However, this will happen only as preparation for the transition to Windows.

Speaking to the media during Mobile World Congress 2011, the chief executive officer of Nokia, Steven Elop, said, “We will continue our work on the Symbian platform as we prepare for the transition.” He said that “Nokia will focus on its developer community in a better way by integrating diverse resources under a single leadership.”

He added that he would like developers to move to the Windows platform in due course of time. The date for the first Nokia smartphone with Windows was not announced, but Elop wants the first device to hit the market this year itself. He also said that Microsoft paid a significant amount to Nokia to use Windows instead of Android.

On the future of MeeGo, he said that Intel was kept in the loop of the partnership with Microsoft, but that the final decision regarding the future of MeeGo with respect to Nokia is still to be worked out.
