Nokia’s first WP7 phones to be called W7 and W8

0

The first of the two Nokia phones based on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 (WP7) mobile operating system will be called W7 and W8, and will be modeled on the current Symbian smartphones X7 and N8.

Eldar Murtazin, a Russian blogger, has published details of these first Windows Phone 7 Nokia phones.

W7 will have an 8 mega camera with auto focus and a Qualcomm chipset. It will be the first dual core smartphone from Nokia.

Nokia has publicly said that it will launch close to 16 WP7 phones starting in 2012. The company’s new chief executive officer Steven Elop said that it will strive to bring WP7 phones earlier than 2012; and we expect them to be launched before Christmas this year.

Another phone that will receive WP7 is the recently launched business phone E7. In addition, there will be another entry level smartphone based on WP7, which is not ready yet.

W8 is likely to be the most powerful Nokia handset so far.

Eldar Murtazin was one of the first bloggers to have reported on Nokia’s plan to use Windows Phone 7 as its primary smartphone platform, and is considered to be a reliable source on Nokia.

A 23 inch tablet from Lenovo?

0

Lenovo plans to launch a 23 inch tablet in the market this year, according to a rumour, which says the tablet will not only be targeted at business users, but will look for a place in the living room as well. This tablet isn’t designed for full mobility, though users will be able to move it from one room to another easily.

The idea behind such a big tablet seems to be that it can be used as an all in one device: as a television, and as a computer when attached with a keyboard.

Microsoft’s Surface is one such computer that will be on sale this year itself.

Lenovo, however, has dismissed the report that it is building a 23 inch tablet.

Window of opportunity for WP7

0

At a time when and dominate the handset market, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is nowhere in the picture.

Months after the collaboration between Nokia and Microsoft has been announced, there are fewer Windows Phone devices than Symbian phones.

It’s not that Microsoft hasn’t seen difficult periods like this. It had a tough time with Windows Vista and Xbox 360, but if Microsoft and Nokia get it right together, be ready to read some glowing reviews all over the web.

Windows Phone is expected to become the number two operating system in the world by 2015. Apple, however, is likely to continue in market segments where profit margins are high, and therefore its numbers will be small.

So, what is the target audience for Windows Phone 7?

Observers have talked a lot about the possibility that Windows Phone 7 is not targeting geeks anymore. The move, if correct, would be substantial because that is the market that drove the first wave of success for the company.

One Microsoft official talked at MIX (a Microsoft developer conference) about the target audience of Windows Phone 7 and how the company is not about knowledge workers alone. He also mentioned that the company is now targeting “life maximizers”, or people who juggle different types of responsibilities all the time.

Microsoft is also targeting the youth who may worry about work email, but would like to have fun too, so they want devices full of apps.

But then these are two different categories, the young audience will get enhanced feature phones, loaded with apps but at lower cost.

Even at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona early this year, Steve Ballmer, the chief executive officer of Microsoft, had made it clear that the company would focus on music, video, games, photos, marketplace, people and, of course, office.

One thing is for sure, we can’t say Microsoft doesn’t know what it is doing.

Sony Ericsson W15 on its way

After launching the new range of Xperia devices, Sony Ericsson is reportedly making Walkman series of music phones which could be launched as Sony Ericsson W15.

The W15 is yet to be approved and officiated by Sony Ericsson, but as the picture shows, the product is almost ready to be launched. The company is yet to respond to the reports.

According to the website, the W15 is expected to feature the latest version of Google’s operating system, a smaller yet capable 600 MHz processor, a 3.2 camera and a 3 inch display.

The phone’s look and feel would be very similar to Sony Ericsson’s very own Xperia X8 smartphone. Along with the regulars, the newest Walkman series phone will also feature a specialised audio chip for a better overall audio output and stereo speakers for loudspeaker.

It would be too early to comment on the pricing but is expected to cost less than Rs 20,000.

Handset Review: Mercury Roxy

0

Dual phones have been there in the market for quite some time and have obviously generated interest among most users as it help reduce the number of handsets one required to carry. Especially in India, where people often choose multiple operators for different offers, such as cheap call or free SMSes.

Mercury, a brand owned by Kobian Pvt Ltd, is a well known name when it comes to PC peripherals and in context to India it holds major repute also being an old trusted brand.

Very recently Mercury has forayed in to the dual SIM mobile phone market in India with the launch of two of its cellphones. We have got the Mercury Roxy one of the two devices launched by the company for review, and how does it performs in the real world condition, let’s check out.

Roxy borrows some of its looks from the Nokia 6300 with the same dual tone colour finish with silver outlining. The looks of this phone no doubt make it stand out and if not getting a closer look anybody would be quite convinced that users has a 6300.

The feel and the built quality is top notch and quite surprisingly it is sturdy enough to handle bigger falls and bruises too. The plastic shell might get some scars on bad falls but it won’t affect the internals.
The display is a basic 2 inch colour with a hard protective outer layer that protects it. The LCD is good in terms for colour reproduction but as expected has a low resolution.

The keypad and the directional keys are placed with ample pitch and are comfortable for longer use due to a softer response. The call answer keys can be used to answer calls from either of the SIMs.

Right above the keypad the Roxy features a strip with green and red LED’s that glow up and blink when receiving a call or when the phone is switched on. Although it’s a great feature to have but could have been done in a subtle way.

Skype comes as an inbuilt or preinstalled application and gives you the option to upgrade or update via also. The inclusion of Skype is a great thing for a phone with this price point. Also along with that MSN messenger also comes preinstalled plus user also can install additional applications too.

Multimedia wise, this phone has the same standard set of features as most dual SIM phones: a multi format audio and video player along with FM. Users can make use of the loudspeaker to listen to FM and or can also connect via the bundled hand-free kit.

Sadly it does not have a 3.5 MM jack and not even a standard port. It uses a slightly bigger jack for connectivity and audio playback which is utterly useless in the world where all smartphones and feature phones are vying for standardisation of ports. But the good news is that Nokia thin chargers are supported and there is an additional charger port placed at the bottom for it.

Coming to the performance, the Roxy gives good call connectivity between different cellular strength areas and even with 1-2 bars worth of network the call quality is good. In terms of earpiece loudness and clarity, the Roxy again fairs well but the microphone does some lousy job in noisy conditions capturing almost all the noise available around it. connectivity is standard with so you can connect any hand free and stereo hands-free as well.

In terms of battery backup, the Roxy does really well. The supplied 1200 battery is capable of powering it for more than 3-4 days for general usage that includes multimedia, calling and occasional gaming too.

It can support up to 4GB of memory cards without hanging or freezing up, but yes operations like play list generation and loading times increase with the added GB’s.

On the side, Mercury has given a physical slider button that power the five LED torch, one of the best features seen till date. Users need not get in the menu and scroll through it to switch the torch on. The torch works even after the phone has died due to low battery.

Finally, with an MRP of Rs 2,299, the Roxy offers a sturdy and a good looking phone that has just one flaw and that is the inclusion of a proprietor port.

But this phone will be available in market for much lesser and for the price it offers a good deal of features which can make you overlook the proprietary port.
