Yahoo gives its services a mobile push

0

Yahoo web services will now come embedded with all the mobile phones which will have microchips of MediaTek, the internet company has announced.

Many Indian handset makers, including Lava, MicroMax and Lemon Mobile, use MediaTek chips in their phone. The move is not likely to affect the pricing of the handsets having Yahoo services embedded in them.

The service, supported by MediaTek, would include Yahoo Mail, Messenger, Flickr, News, Weather, Finance, Cricket and Answers.

Besides, MediaTek is also planning to add other web apps in the phones as well. Yahoo web apps will be the first one in the line, with other web apps to follow soon.

MediaTek is mainly known for its wireless chips integrated in unbranded feature phones. These phones are mostly sold in emerging countries. The service will use the MAUI runtime environment (MRE) developed by the company.

The MAUI runtime environment is basically a middleware technology which will allow developers to develop apps for smart feature phones, a MediaTek spokesperson said.

This tie-up will benefit Yahoo since its content services would now reach a wider audience than before, though any additional revenue stream from the move is not foreseen at this point. With the increase usage, Yahoo may hope to sell more ads through the MediaTek mobile platform.

“This partnership will allow users of handsets powered by MediaTek’s System on Chips to easily discover and connect with Yahoo!,” the two companies said in a joint statement.

MediaTek is basically focusing on mass market smartphones, the main market driver for the handset growth, as this is the market segment which is mostly neglected by major apps developers. These low end phones often do not have a complete operating system either but they do have a and some storage as well. The other companies interested in targeting the same market include Opera Mobile and Myriad Technologies.

MediaTek is also working with handset makers such as Cherry Mobile and Spice Group. The new partners will also work together with the company in developing feature phone widgets &#151 after that the next logical step would be developing mass smartphones running on operating system.

HTC Flyer coming to India this month

0

HTC is going to enter the Indian tablet market with its 2.4 based 7 inch tablet Flyer. The neatly designed tablet with aluminium unibody construction (single piece of metal cast as full body) will be launched in India by the end of this month.

The tablet is already available online at Letsbuy.com for a price of Rs 37,500. Although it is more expensive than other tablets in the market, it has the features to justify its price. The only negative aspect of this tablet is the absence of Android 3.0. However, it comes with a unique tablet-optimised 2.4 version of Android, which is yet to be seen in the Indian market.

Flyer will come with an all-new HTC Sense user interface that has been redesigned for tablets. It will also have a special which, according to the company, will give a “ground breaking pen experience”. The stylus will enable an improved writing experience on the screen and better note taking by integrating with other apps like calendar and voice recorder.

The tablet has a 1.5 GHz and 1 of RAM (very good for a tablet,) along with a 5 megapixel camera at the rear and a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front, as well as support for mapping.

The battery has 4000 capacity and delivers up to 4 hours of continuous video playback.

HTC also announced HTC Watch Service, a new connected video service that will debut with Flyer, and which enables on-demand progressive downloading of hundreds of high definition movies from major studios.

The company has collaborated with OnLive to launch the first cloud-based mobile gaming service on a tablet so that you do not have to download the games to your device. The tablet will support both Flash 10 and HTML 5.

HTC claims that the tablet is ultra-light, weighing as little as a paperback book, and compact enough to fit in a jacket pocket. Another thing special about this tablet is that it is the only device with 2.4 version of Android in the Indian market so far.

Dell to focus on markets other than US for tablets

0

At a time when most of the innovative products are launched in the US and European countries first, Indian users can now expect Dell products before their launch in Western markets.

Describing the company’s emphasis on India and China, Amit Midha, president-China and South Asia, Dell, said, “The next one billion people to come onto the Internet will be from emerging countries, with the majority from the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China). These countries present tremendous growth and opportunity to Dell as a company.”

Another Dell executive said in an interview to CNET that the US market is just not ready for an tablet just yet. The 10 inch Android tablet from Dell – Streak 10 Pro – will first be launched in China and not in the US. This is, however, not a new move from Dell, which has launched its handsets in India first before.

The reason?

Apple has sold about 25 million iPads so far, whereas the Android tablet makers such as Motorola and Samsung have sold only a small fraction of this number. Motorola Xoom has shipped 250,000 tablets and Samsung has sold about one million tablets so far. Compared to other companies, Samsung tablets sold slightly better.

John Thode, vice president and manager of Dell’s mobility business, told CNET, “This is not an either-or for us. This is a choice about where is the best place to take our story and avoids a bunch of the inhibitors and barriers to success that we’ve seen in the US market,”

The smaller tablet from Dell, the Streak 7, has been launched in the US and a hybrid tablet is also out there, but in the 10 inch tablet space, Apple clearly dominates and Dell does not intend to swim against the tide by launching its 10 inch tablet there first.

Nokia N8 set to get Symbian Anna update

0

Nokia N8 users across the globe would be getting a Symbian Anna firmware update in coming few weeks. All those who love the Nokia N8’s 12-megapixel camera would finally be able to make the best of it.

Damien Dinning, Nokia’s mobile camera guru, confirmed it via Twitter saying that the Symbian Anna update will bring continuous and 30FPS camera recording capabilities.

Symbian Anna is expected to bring better and smoother user interface for Symbian smartphones. In Nokia N8’s case, it will bring number of tweaks out of which few for the camera get confirmed. With the Continous Auto-Focus, users can shoot smoother quality videos at 30 frames per second with the Carl Zeiss lens.

Though Dinning has been refraining to confirm a date or release, we can anticipate Nokia to give out official word anytime soon. So if you have held on to your Nokia N8, your patience is finally going to pay off with Symbian Anna release.

Last month, the Finnish handset maker announced Symbian Anna loaded Nokia N8 in Pink Colour in several countries. With this the Symbian^3 based handsets N8, E7, C7 and C6-01 will get the new Anna update in following months as promised by Nokia.

Motorola to drop Motoblur brand name

0

Last week, Motorola Mobility’s chief executive officer, Sanjay Jha, noted that several improperly tested third-party applications are responsible for the poor performance of smartphones. Instead, he said that the Motorola Motoblur user interface would offer better power management for Android devices. At a recent launch of a smartphone with Sprint and Verizon, the company’s executives refrained from talking about using the Motoblur user interface for next generation devices.

Last year, Jha stated that the company will “focus on the value proposition of products and not Motoblur as a brand name.” It was later confirmed by the company’s spokesperson at the launch of Photon and Triumph.

As reported earlier, the company is working on a new user interface that will focus more on the interface skin and on social networking for the next generation of Android devices. It is precisely the reason why not many devices and in fact no Motorola device available in India runs it.

Motorola India’s spokesperson shared, “currently there are no plans of introducing Motoblur in India.”

Motorola seems to be warding off Motoblur as a name but will continue to use the optimised custom interface for the next generation of Android smartphones.

The new interface is said to be more focused on social networking. The custom interface constantly checks with Motorola’s servers if the user’s social network account has any updates.

Last week HTC announced the opening of its custom user interface HTC Sense to the developer community for developing apps. Many industry observers are expecting Motorola to follow in the lines of HTC and do the same for the benefit of users.

We can rest assured that all future devices from Motorola will get the update, but we are not sure if the same updated user interface would be made available in India as well.

Mobile phones lead to prosperity: Study

0

Mobile phones not only contribute to the growth of a nation but also help make lives better, suggests a study of Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm.

It has come out with a white paper developed with the support of World Economic Forum’s Telecommunications Industry Global Agenda Council entitled “Putting in the Palms of People’s Hands: A Model to Drive Faster Economic and Social Growth”. The paper describes the impact of widespread access to mobile communications on economic and social growth in developing economies.

To create the paper, teams of experts from Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs and the World Economic Forum’s Telecommunications Industry Global Agenda Council conducted in-depth studies of the mobile landscape in emerging markets, particularly in Bangladesh, Kenya and Venezuela.

The research revealed that mobile phones have the potential to grow the benefits even more quickly both in terms of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and HDI (Human Development Index &#151 a measure of quality of life based on life expectancy, education and standard of living).

Previous research by the World Bank has highlighted that 10 per cent increase in mobile penetration leads to a 1 per cent increase in GDP in low- and middle-income economies.

The study also documents the versatility and impact of mobile voice and data applications in socioeconomic development. It has cited how in India, fishermen use mobile phones to find the best markets for their catch.

According to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), India has 811 million cellphone users.

“Mobility is about so much more than mobile phones. It gives people access to services, information and markets that were previously unavailable to them. In short, it’s about inclusion and giving people the ability to do more,” said Rajeev Singh-Molares, president of Asia Pacific region at Alcatel-Lucent, and vice-chairman of the WEF GAC working group that conducted the study.

The report said that “a range of applications relevant to the target audience will increase the desirability of mobile devices”.

The study suggests that the total cost of mobile communication should be less than 5 per cent of household budgets, to become a realistic option for many in low- and middle-income countries.

Phone and content creators, wealthier consumers who upgrade their handsets regularly and government agencies can all play a part in getting affordable hardware and connectivity to the hands of the poor.

WP7, Android users can expect more apps in future

0

More developers want to make applications for the Windows Phone 7 and platforms over the iOS, according to a survey conducted by Vision Mobile. This indicates that the users of the first two platforms can expect more apps in future compared to the later.
Interest for Windows Phone 7 seems to be huge and is only marginally second to the Android platform despite the fact that its current market share has reduced marginally.

The survey looks at Windows Phone 7 with two viewing angles, present and future. In the present, the platform is not viewed favourably, but for the future it is being watched out.

The interest in Windows Phone 7 can be attributed to the easier developer tools of Microsoft. Besides, PC and Xbox developers are also getting interested in developing mobile games for the platform as they see it as an important revenue stream.

On the other hand, Android’s instant publishing policy allows developers to publish quickly, whereas Apple makes them go through difficult approval processes before their apps are accepted.

With the arrival of iCloud, the dominance of Apple is likely to increase since Macs are now connected with the other Apple devices whereas other platforms are not.

The study further added, “The most surprising finding is the adoption of mobile web, i.e. the platform for apps written in HTML or JavaScript, which claimed the third spot in terms of developer mindshare, being used by over 55 per cent of the developers. This is probably due to the influx of non-mobile developers to the industry. Also, mobile web is fast becoming the de-facto cross-platform choice for developers, especially now that Java and Flash are waning.”
