Nokia ‘Sea Ray’ makes online appearance

0

Nokia’s chief executive officer Stephen Elop has shared company’s plans going ahead with Windows Phone 7 and also flashed a prototype codenamed Sea Ray.

In a video available through Hungarian blog Technet, Elop talks about the future of Windows Phone in context of Nokia devices and also shows the video of the Sea Ray prototype device. That may not be the final version but we got fair idea what Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 based device would look like &#151 Nokia N9.

Post announcement of Nokia-Microsoft tie-up, everyone has been eager to see the first Windows Phone 7 device branded by Nokia. The company did surprise everyone by unveiling MeeGo platform based slim Nokia N9 device at the Nokia Connection 2011 event in Singapore.

Following that announcement, Elop got on to a stage for what seems to be an invite-only briefing and talked about Nokia’s plans with Windows Phone. The device shown in the video clearly resembles Nokia N9 with same body enclosure. However, the video smartly excludes the optical capacitive buttons portion from the lower front panel of the prototype device dubbed as Sea Ray.

From the video we certainly get an idea what Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 Mango update running device would look like. It will have a 1 GHz processor, minimum 512 and other “basic hardware specifications” made mandatory by Microsoft.

Microsoft’s next major Windows Phone 7 update is expected to come in mid-October and now Nokia’s closed-door disclosures of WP7 Prototype hints that the device would come in the same month. Windows Phone 7 Mango is the major update for existing WP7 devices. We presume many more handset will be launched post that.

Apple to monopolise touchscreen mobile phones?

0

Apple has just been granted a patent which may have far reaching ramifications on the smartphone or mobile devices segment. For the users it means, Apple may monopolise the smartphone and tablet market.

The patent is about touchscreen functionality on portable devices, which says: “A computer-implemented method, for use in conjunction with a portable multifunction device with a touch screen display, comprises displaying a portion of page content, including a frame displaying a portion of frame content and also including other content of the page, on the touch screen display.”

From outside, it looks like a big win for the company and equally big loss for the rival smartphone and tablet manufacturers. Some analysts believe Apple would now be able to arm twist its competitors as it has been granted the patent over finger movement technology used by other mobile device manufacturers as well.

Most of the patent applications, even if granted do not get so much attention, but since the Apple products such as iPhone and iPad have become such a big hit, and every other company in the space is trying to replicate the success of Apple, the patents may go on to have a huge impact on the mobile devices market.

Some of the most basic activities done by the users on a smartphone are covered in the patent, including the ‘touch’ function.

The patent begins by talking about moving web pages, but later talks about spreadsheets, word processing documents, presentation and even emails.

Last but not the least, since there are so many lawsuits in which Apple is already embroiled, it should not come as a surprise if Apple decides to use this patent to its advantage. The patent grant is still open to interpretation, and how things will pan out is remain to be seen.

The previous version of the browser did suffer from some panning issues and sluggish performance over fast 3G networks. The new version promises that both issues have been fixed to give a zippier mobile web browsing experience on Android smartphones. Firefox and add-ons go hand-in-hand and thereby about 20 add-ons for the mobile web browser will be released with this update.

Besides all that, Firefox offers a Sync feature that synchronizes the history, bookmarks, notes and sessions on the desktop version of Firefox with those on the Android version.

Should one shell out money for iCloud?

0

Apple’s online storage service, iCloud, which was unveiled earlier this month, has attracted a lot of attention recently. According to a research, conducted by RBC Capital Markets, a whopping 76 per cent of iPhone users said they want to use the iCloud service. Surprisingly, 30 per cent users were ready to shell out $25 per year to buy iCloud’s iTunes Match service, which is good news for music labels which have signed the deal with Apple.

But will it be wise to spend money on iCloud?

First of all, it is a free service unless you want to use the iTunes Match service of iCloud which would cost you $25 (Rs 1,125 approx).
The service does provide ease of use as users don’t have to download everything on to their handsets to use it. However, a user has to pay for the data charges whenever they access their data from the iCloud, which would cost them anything between Rs 400 to Rs 700 per month.
However, for the same amount, a user can download a significant amount of data on his handset. So cost wise, it would not make much difference to the users.

But, the benefit iCloud brings is the unlimited data storage facility.
iCloud allow users to sync all their photos, emails, apps, and other data across all their devices such as iPhone, iPod, and iPad. So when the users buy their Angry Birds game on an iPad, they can still access it from their iPhone, Mac or iPod.

The service which is getting most of the attention is Apple’s iTunes Music Match which will scan the users’ music and will replace random files with licensed high quality music. The licensed version of the music tracks will be sourced from 18 billion tracks strong iTunes music library. Such a collection of music definitely would attract iCloud’s potential users.

This is a feature which even Google or Amazon would not be able to replicate, since they do not have a deal with the music labels. Those who will use these services will have to own their music and upload it manually, whereas the Apple process will not take much time. At the same time, it’s not just the iPhone users who would be interested in the service, there would be many other users who would love to sync their apps and music between their desktop and iPad, so the potential is huge.

While cloud services from other companies are built more like a substitute for Microsoft Office’s web based version, iCloud concentrates mostly on the consumers – who own iPads and iPhones. It is designed by keeping the end users in the mind who can store and sync their music, documents, pictures, email and calendars in the cloud.
We have elucidated the facts before you, now its upto you to decide whether iCloud is worth your money or not.
