Smartphones batteries to get smaller

0

An Indian origin researcher working in the field of nanowire devices, Pulickel M Ajayan, has managed to pack lithium ion batteries into one nanowire &#151 an achievement that can help mobile phone manufacturer to make smaller batteries, thus reducing the size of handsets.

The lithium ion batteries are used to power mobiles and smartphones. These batteries have the potential to power nanoscale (very small) electronics as well.

“The idea here is to fabricate nanowire energy storage devices with ultrathin separation between the electrodes,” said Arava Leela Mohana Reddy, a research scientist at Rice University (USA) and the co-author of the study.

“This affects the electrochemical behaviour of the device. Our devices could be a very useful tool to probe nanoscale phenomenon,” added Leela.

Some time ago, a similar battery had come out of the Rice University but then the cathode had to be connected from outside which was not practical for smartphones. This time, the drawback has been addressed and the cathode has been tucked inside the battery.

The material, polyaniline (PANI), has been chosen for making the cathode. The battery itself is so thin, when looked at from the side, it is almost invisible.

“There’s a lot to be done to optimise the device in terms of performance,” said the paper’s lead author, Sanketh Gowda, a chemical engineering graduate student at Rice. “Optimisation of the polymer separator and its thickness and an exploration of different electrode systems could lead to improvements.”

Researchers still have a problem to solve in the battery, they need to increase its ability to charge and discharge repeatedly. The current version of the battery built by them gradually loses its ability to charge after about 20 cycles.

Sony S1 tablet to have four versions

0

There will be four versions of Sony S1 tablets, which are set to be launched in September this year, CNET has disclosed.

In April, Sony had announced that it will launch the Andorid powered tablets but did not provide much information then in terms of variants and other specifications.

Now the CNET report said that Sony will launch a pair of only models (with 16GB and 32GB of storage) and two models of the same capacities with Wi-Fi and 3G.

The S2 will not have a separate Wi-Fi only variant, it will come in 16GB and 32GB capacities with both Wi-Fi and connectivity.

In addition to the internal storage, the S1 will have an card slot for more capacity and it will also feature a 9.4-inch IPS display with Sony’s TruBlack and Bravia technologies.

The battery life of the S1 is claimed to be comparable with the Apple iPad 2 with its dual screens will fare but there’s no word on how the S2.

Accessories would be introduced along with the launch of these tablets, including a keyboard for the S1 that is designed to clip onto the bottom of the tablet when not in use.

Expect exceptionally powerful Tegra 3 based smartphones by 2012

0

In terms of presence in the chip market, this has been the year of Nvidia so far as the dual core Tegra 2 system on a chip (SOC) appeared on most of the major tablets that hit the market in 2011. That’s not all, the quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 will begin arriving in a few months this year itself.

Tegra 3 will have four cores, a graphics processing unit (GPU) with 12 cores, and display up to 2560 x 1200 pixels &#151 all this combinly will provide around five times better performance compared than the 1 GHz dual-core Tegra 2 SoC.

In a statement to a website, Nvidia says, “Project Kal-El-powered tablets are coming this Fall, and phones around the CES (Consumer Electronic Show) 2012 timeframe”.

Just on the basis of this statement, users cannot jump to conclusion they will get their quad core phones in the first month of 2012, but by summer at least they can expect to see something tangible in the market.

Tegra 3 is expected to be a huge step forward from Tegra 2, but users are still waiting for the actual device.

The only problem is that the software apps will need to be rewritten to unlock the potential of quad core processors. But once it has been done, multitasking or even running heavy apps such as graphics heavy games which use a lot of data would become easier.

Apple has announced the availability of the beta version of its iCloud service for developers.
The iCloud service, which will be a free service for Apple users, seems inspired from the Mobile Me, the cloud based contact, email and calendar management service of Apple.
iCloud will feature all the services of the Mobile Me along with a few add-ons like the iWork integration with the cloud and ‘find my phone’, a web based iPhone tracking service.

Although these services are still not open to public but now at least we have started to know that what the new 5 will be capable of and with the iCloud things look interesting.

The basic 5 version of the iCloud service will be free but for the 10 GB, 20 GB and 50 GB variants, users will have to shell out $20, $40 and $100 per year respectively. The basic service of the iCloud will give access to basic features allowing users to access the 5 GB storage space for various tasks including contacts, calendar and picture management along with other free services.

However, the service will be available for the public only towards the end of September this year. Apple has opened up a dedicated web portal for the service which can be accessed by visiting www.icloud.com and using the Apple ID to log in but only once the public version is on.

Telecos must tell users on activation of services: TRAI

Taking exception to the unauthorised activation of value added services, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued direction to the telecom companies in the country asking them to obtain a confirmation from consumers within 24 hours of activation of the same through or e-mail or fax or in writing.

If the telecos fail to contact the users, the value added services shall be de-activated without any cost to the consumer.

This has been revealed by Milind Deora, Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology, in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

According to the minister, TRAI has received complaints from consumers regarding activation of value added services, including ring tunes on their mobile handsets by service providers without their explicit consent. During the period 1st April 2010 to 31st March 2011 TRAI had received 672 numbers of complaints from consumers relating to value added services.

Google updates Gmail for mobiles

Google has updated its Gmail for mobiles to make it look better on the smaller screen and function smoother.

According to a Google blog post, users just have to pull down the mail inbox page to refresh it. This feature has already been available for social networking apps, and currently the Gmail feature will be available only in iOS devices and BlackBerry PlayBook. The new icons are high ones, which make full use of the ‘retina display’ provided on iOS devices by Apple.

The Google blog post said, “On the mobile team, we strive to produce web apps which look and feel just like installed apps. In the past few weeks, we’ve released a number of features which make Gmail for mobile look sharper and feel smoother.”

The transitions between inbox, menu and conversations look as if one screen is sliding to another &#151 the basic idea behind such transitions is to make the whole process smoother. Since the updates were being rolled out for some time, some users may have noticed the changes earlier also.

HTC promises to unlock bootloader at the cost of warranty

0

After facing heat from the developers and enthusiasts over the unlocked bootloader issue, HTC has now promised to bring a web-based tool that provides unlocking key but will void the warranty of the device.

Users will have to accept all the legal disclaimers stating that bootloader unlocking will void all or parts of the device’s warranty. Future HTC handsets will continue shipping with locked bootloader albeit with support for unlocking via the web tool.

Many would be wondering what is a bootloader and why so much hoopla about it. Bootloader is a specific encrypted code that initiates the sequence of loading the operating system on the device, in this case mobile phones. It is the first code that runs immediately once the device powers up from the non-volatile memory of the system board.

Locking down the bootloader is a security measure taken by the manufactures to ensure that users don’t run non-signed custom operating systems that have not been tested exhaustively and may end up damaging a part or whole device in due course of time.

Back in May, HTC announced to review the issue about unlocking bootloaders after getting complaints from developers as well as enthusiasts. Last month, HTC announced that software updates for unlocking bootloaders will be rolled out for latest devices that include HTC Sensation, Sensation and HTC EVO 3D.

Now HTC is promising a Web Tool that will require developers and enthusiasts to provide with a valid email address and also accept bunch of legal disclaimers. By presenting those legal disclaimers, HTC basically reminds the specific developer, enthusiast or user that entire or part of the device warranty will be void after bootloader is unlocked.

Users need to install the Android SDK (Software Development Kit) on their computers and then connect their device to retrieve a device-specific token key. That unique token key needs to be entered in the web tool and in return a unique unlock key will be sent to the respective user via previously registered email. Finally, the bootloader can be unlocked by applying that particular key on the device.
