Instagram 2.0 for iPhone and iPad

0

A new version of photo sharing Instagram has been launched for devices. The new Instagram 2.0 has a redesigned user interface with four new filters. The camera has also been provided with a new technology layer.

Instagram is managed by just six staff members and 150 million photos had been uploaded on the app by August. The number comes as a big achievement considering that the app is available only on iOS devices.

The filters have been rewritten in a manner to make sure users don’t have to wait long to apply one to a picture. The company says the new filters work 200 times faster than they earlier did.

“We’re excited to provide four brand new filters: Amaro, Rise, Hudson, and Valencia. With these new filters we continue the trend of turning regular photos into beautiful snapshots. What’s most exciting to us is that we’ve teamed up with @colerise, an extremely popular Instagrammer, to produce these new effects.

Keep your eye out for more collaborations to come,” said the company while announcing the launch of Instagram 2.0.

Even those who believe Market had managed to catch up with Apple’s App Store in terms of look and feel as well as selection of apps would agree that Instagram is one app which is lacking on Android devices.

Initially Instagram 2.0 looks very similar to its older versions, but while taking a picture the interface turns out to be hugely different.

Metro apps to be available through Windows store only

0

The recently announced Windows 8 platform will have exclusive access to Metro apps. These apps are meant for the Windows Mobile user interface, called the Metro user interface.

The company feels that the move will ensure better discoverability, easier enforcement of software trials, and the facilitation of in-app purchases. The move mirrors what Apple does for iPhone and iPad while it is in contrast to Android, for which apps are available across different stores.

The eco-system is very open, and is facing a problem in the security area as a lot of malware attacks have been reported since users download apps from other stores. Similarly, there is also the problem of user experience being inconsistent on different applications.

The regular desktop apps, which will also work on Windows 8, will continue to be available from both Microsoft controlled stores (Windows Store will also have a “free listing service” for non-Metro Windows apps,) as well as from developer sites.

Also, enterprises can still bypass Microsoft’s Windows store to test apps before using them by side-loading ((i.e. downloading them onto a computer before installing on other devices).

Microsoft has also disclosed that it will share revenue on a 70:30 ratio with 30 per cent for Microsoft and the rest for the developer. There will also be a small annual fee that developers on the Windows platform will have to pay. This is very similar to what Apple does on its platform.

What impact will it have on the pricing of apps? Well, that only the future can tell us, when more details about terms and conditions emerge.

Idea has managed to add 23 lakh of users to its kitty in August, almost double to the next successful telecom operator &#151 Bharti Airtel who managed to attract about 11.5 lakh users in the said month. However, the total GSM subscriber addition in August stood at just about 5 million, which compared to 7.65 million in the earlier month.

This was revealed by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) which released a statistical report detailing figures of markets share and number of users of GSM operators of India.

According to the report, Bharti Airtel has added 11,50,298 number of users taking its market share to 28.09 per cent, thus keeping its No 1 telecom operator status intact.

The second biggest teleco, Vodafone Essar has 23.56 per cent of market share. It has added 11,33,024 number of users in August taking the total to about 14 crore.

Idea, at No 3, has added the most number of users last month &#151 23,30,239, which helped it enhancing its market share to 16.09 per cent.

Videocon and STel are the only two GSM operators who have registered a negative growth, losing 6,52,383 and 67,259 number of users respectively in August.

Loss making public sector units, BSNL and MTNL though registered a meagre growth &#151 adding about 3 lakh and 32,932 users respectively.

Other operators like Aircel, Uninor, Loop Mobile and Etisalat have also registered minor growth.

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is the most popular standard for mobile telephony systems in the world. CDMA is the other technology platform on which Indian telcos offer services. Tata Teleservices (TTSL), Reliance Communications and MTS are the main CDMA operators.

Qualcomm licence rejected: will it impact consumers?

0

US chipmaker Qualcomm Inc’s application for internet service provider (ISP) licence, after it won wireless access (BWA) spectrum in June last year, has been rejected by telecom ministry of India.

Reacting to the news, a spokesperson of the company said, “We received a notice from the Indian Department of Telecommunications on September 21, 2011 informing us that the license to the companies formed with our Indian partners, for use of the spectrum, which Qualcomm won at last year’s BWA auction, has been rejected on grounds that we find to be baseless. In fact, the application process was fully complied with, and we will continue to work with the Indian authorities to resolve this matter.”

This move is bound to effect Indian consumers who will lose out on affordable and faster wireless internet services.
“Multiple trials were conducted along with our partners and have been extremely successful. Any further delay in award of licence will deprive the Indian consumers in realising these benefits, thereby severely impacting India’s broadband plans,” the company said to DNA.

4G BWA (broadband wireless access) spectrum was auctioned soon after the auctions last year. While Reliance bagged spectrum in all 22 circles, Airtel got licences for four circles, Aircel for eight, Tikona in five circles, and Qualcomm also bagged spectrum in four circles. BSNL and MTNL had got spectrum even before the auction but have so far launched WiMax in very few locations.

Both and WiMax, called or BWA technology, offer very high speed wireless broadband access at theoretical speeds greater than 100 Mbps; while users can access real speeds of 10 on these networks. What is also good is the fact that LTE is backward compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks.

Nokia’s initiative: Preventing diabetes through SMS

0

Arogya World, a USA-based non-profit organisation focusing on healthy living, has announced the launch of a new service that is designed to help raise awareness about diabetes in India. This service makes use of Nokia Life Tools that allows based messages to be delivered directly to subscribers’ mobile phones, creating awareness about diabetes, which is likely to kill a million people this year.

Through this service subscribers are made aware of the ways that diabetes can be prevented. The messages delivered through this service are crafted mainly for people in India, by health experts based in India, the UK and the USA, for both diabetics and non-diabetic patients.

Non diabetics are also included in this because it is believed that diabetes is largely preventable and in 80 per cent of cases it can be completely avoided as well.

Global head of Nokia Life Tools, Jawahar Kanjilal, said: “Mobile phones are ushering in an information revolution in the daily lives of millions, especially in emerging markets. Delivering targeted diabetes prevention messages to a profiled audience using our Nokia Life Tools platform, in a sustained and continuous engagement will, we believe, encourage people to adopt a healthier lifestyle.”

The service will be offered free to the first million users in the sub-continent who have Nokia Life Tools on their phones and subscribe to the Health Channel. No additional download or subscription will be needed to subscribe to this service.

The text advice will be available across India in 12 different local languages between November this year until October 2013 or until one million Indian users have been reached by the service.

New Release: Galactic Shooter lite for Android

0

Galactic Shooter Lite, a snooker like game, has been launched for the devices. Its developer, Armada Animations, has tried to present snooker in a totally different way.

In this game, users or players have to use their snooker or pool skills in order to achieve the target which is to cover a star with the moon or a smaller planet while avoiding obstacles. The game is based on projectile inputs and users can control the angle, speed and the direction of the hit. The players play as an alien who sits in his space craft and shoots at other planets or stars in order to achieve his goal.

The Galactic Snooker Lite is the first ever Armada animation to feature on the Google Android Market.

The developer has released just the Lite version of this application that gives access to 15 levels with different levels of difficulty and target. The developer also plans to launch the paid version of this soon that will feature 30 different levels with a whole new graphic interface and a level creator as well that will allow users to design their own custom levels.

The Galactic Snooker application is available for free for download from Google’s Android Market. Users can search for the application on their devices or on the computer or alternatively users can also follow this link to download the application.

Reliance to launch 4G by December

0

A great deal of secrecy has been maintained by Reliance Industries about its plans. But the director general of COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India) Rajan S Mathews has confirmed that Reliance is going ahead with plans to launch its network starting December this year.

Speaking to The Mobile Indian, Mathews said, “First BWA network roll-out will happen by December this year, with Reliance Industries taking the lead, followed by operators like Airtel and others who will launch the service by the first quarter of 2012 (December to March).”

He added, “The choice of technology is LTE, but with security clearance and lack of devices for LTE, the launch plans have not been announced so far. However, most of these issues have been resolved and the roll-outs will commence shortly.”

Both and WiMax, called 4G or BWA technology, offer very high speed wireless access at theoretical speeds greater than 100 Mbps; while users can access real speeds of 10 on these networks. What is also good is the fact that LTE is backward compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks.

During the BWA (broadband wireless access) spectrum auction held in June this year, Infotel Broadband Services (now owned by Reliance Industries) won licenses for 22 circles while Aircel won eight, and Bharti Airtel and Qualcomm won four circles each, Tikona won five and Augere managed one.

So far no operator except Qualcomm (which is a technology vendor and participated only to ensure support for LTE technology) has made the choice of technology clear. However, LTE is clearly the more preferred of the two 4G technologies. WiMax is the other but it is losing out to LTE as some established WiMax players like Sprint in the USA are moving to LTE.
