Viewsonic unveiled its first Honeycomb tablet, the ViewPad 7x, during IFA Berlin. The tablet will be launched in India this September. Ajay Sharma, the country manager of Viewsonic India confirmed to The Mobile Indian that the ViewPad 7x will be launched at a competitive price in the Indian market next month.

The 7 inch tablet comes preinstalled with the latest version of Honeycomb update version 3.2. Although technical specifications for the ViewPad 7x are unavailable, we do know that it will be powered by an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor. The display will be 7 inch multi touch capacitive with native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. One of the best things about the 7x is that it utilizes a 10 point touch sensitive technology that makes it more intuitive and exciting for the user. The device will also feature front and rear cameras and 8 of along with a 32 GB expandable memory Micro slot.

The device also has a custom user interface called ViewScene 3D. We’re told this interface is somewhat similar to the Windows flip feature but the tiles are stacked in a circular fashion. The interface is fully customizable and users can tweak or modify it as per their needs. One of the most useful features of the ViewPad 7x is its pre-installed tuner software that allows maps to be saved locally on the device so that it can provide navigation even without a data connection.

The ViewPad 7x, as mentioned above, is scheduled for launch in India next month, most probably around the same time as it will be launched in the international market. The Viewsonic spokesperson did not comment on the price of the device but looking at the international price, which is Euro 350, it is expected to cost around Rs 30,000 or less.

Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet surfaces online

Images of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 display its dedicated camera button and capacitive touch buttons. The images are from a blog, Android Life.

We earlier reported that Samsung is expected to release the new Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet at the upcoming pre-IFA event on 1 September in Berlin, Germany. The official Samsung Mobile Unpacked for Android had also carried logos of the upcoming product.

Several technology enthusiasts believe that the images are of a Galaxy Tab 8.9 prototype. But we would like to point out the capacitive menu buttons on the black bezel at the bottom in portrait mode, which indicate. As a successor of the Galaxy Tab 7.0, the new Galaxy Tab 7.7 will have similar physical characteristics. However, it is expected to incorporate some core changes.

As per the images, the tablet has a dedicated camera button on one side. Samsung is expected to use a Super for this tablet as the company has a number of products with displays lined up for the upcoming year.

It is quite likely that the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 will come with Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system as this version is said to be made specifically for 7 inch display tablets, but it won’t be surprising if the device comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread with new TouchWiz 4.0 layered on top.

The Samsung Mobile Unpacked event is just a few days away and it would be interesting to see what the company has under its hat to tease the mobile world.

Ultra thin tablet from Toshiba

0

Toshiba’s new tablet is likely to be a lot thinner than its current offering, Thrive, said a tech website.

The new tablet appears to have an all-metal body, which seems to be a response to the criticism faced by Toshiba’s Thrive for being heavier and bulkier than the competition. Thrive, of course, had something which the competition didn’t have &#151 full sized ports. These ports allowed Thrive’s users to connect external accessories such as keyboards and gaming pads directly to the tablet.

The thinner tablet from Toshiba will not have full sized USB ports and will instead have micro HDMI, micro USB, and micro card slots. The new tablet from Toshiba is expected to be unveiled at the IFA Berlin, a consumer electronics trade fair.

The specifications of the tablet are not known, though it is expected to run on Honeycomb.

The first tablet launched by Toshiba was Folio, which did not survive in the market for long; whereas the second tablet Thrive did marginally better.

LG 3D Game Converter software for mobiles

0

LG has formally announced its 3D Game Converter software for Optimus 3D smartphones in October. The 3D Game Converter will let users turn their OpenGL-based 2D games into 3D. Of course, 2D to 3D conversion is reversible as well. LG will show this 3D Game Converter software at the upcoming IFA 2011 consumer electronics exhibition in Berlin, Germany.

LG recently announced the new Optimus 3D smartphone in India at Rs 37,000. Optimus 3D has a glasses-free 4.3 inch WVGA display that shows 3D content effortlessly.

By default the Optimus 3D comes with Froyo 2.2 preloaded with the LG 3D user interface. LG boasts of the dual-channel and dual-memory architecture that is meant to aid 3D content display as well as 3D content recording using the twin 5 cameras at the back.

LG’s new 3D Game Converter software is most likely dependent on 2.3 Gingerbread and is programmed to automatically scan 2D games to see if they are optimised for 3D conversion. The software will be released for Optimus 3D smartphones later this year. Also, the same 3D Game Convertor software can be used by game development companies to make their OpenGL 2D games ready for 3D conversion.

Listed 2D games will immediately be eligible for conversion with the 3D Game Convertor while non-listed games will be convertible once their settings are manually adjusted. LG will bring about 100 games optimised for 3D conversion by the end of the year.

Henry Nho, LG’s 3D technology evangelist, stated, “Using the existing depth information, the 3D Game Converter generates two different images – one for the foreground and one for the background. It then uses a thin film called Parallax Barrier on the display to show the left image to the left eye and the right image to the right eye, creating an illusion of visual depth.”

LG had also promised that it would offer remote maintenance services for Optimus smartphones (excluding Optimus One P500).

LG is yet to roll out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its Optimus family of Android smartphones. Once the update is out these new services and the 3D Game Convertor will be widely usable.

Predicting traffic using the smartphone camera

0

Vehicles often burn most fuel due to the stop-and-go movement at traffic signals. To minimise this, researchers of Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have now suggested a software service that uses mobile phones to detect and predict the schedule of traffic lights, which will help users in slowing down their vehicles to minimise frequent stoppings and thus reduce fuel consumption.

The service, known as the SignalGuru system, connects various smartphones to keep a centralised repository of information about traffic lights. The information is captured by the cameras of users’ smartphones and tells the driver when to slow down so as to avoid stopping at the next traffic light.

The paid version of the system would also have audio suggestions for drivers. For example, it can suggest when they should take another route.

So far the system has only been used in Singapore and Cambridge (USA). The researchers found that fuel consumption was reduced by about 20 per cent when SignalGuru was used.

The MIT website says, “The system is intended to capitalise on a growing trend, in which drivers install brackets on their dashboards so that they can use their smartphone as a navigator while driving. But unlike previous in-car cellphone applications, the new system, dubbed SignalGuru, relies on images captured by the phones’ cameras.”

LG partners with National Geographic photographers for 3D content

0

LG Electronics is collaborating with photographers of National Geographic Assignment to create 3D image and video content. The material will be shot entirely with the LG Optimus 3D, a glasses-free full 3D smartphone with the tri-dual architecture.

This is being done to showcase the technology, such as video stabilisation and misalignment correction functions, of this 3D phone.

These technologies will allow the National Geographic Assignment photographers to capture 3D content in a variety of locations. National Geographic Assignment selected six staff artists to capture images with the smartphone.

The photojournalists, comprised of four photographers and two videographers, are Steven Alvarez, Brian Skerry, Bryan Harvey, Justin Guariglia, Peter Hutchens and Steve Winter.

LG has also ensured that people have 17 3D games which they can enjoy on the phone, company has also partnered with YouTube to provide 3D video content for the phone.

Sony S2 renamed as Sony Tablet P

0

Barely five days after the users heard about the arrival of Sony Tablet S2, reports now suggest that the company will rename the tablet as Sony Tablet P.

According to the report, the Sony Tablet P will be a device with the two screens of 5.5 inch each.

The two devices are going to be officially launched at IFA Berlin, a consumer electronics trade fair, in the first week of September.

The Sony Tablet P will run on Nvidia Tegra 2 with Honeycomb 3.1 and will be PlayStation certified &#151 so the PlayStation suite fans can access their favourite gaming content on it.

The Sony Tablet P will have 4 storage, along with WiFi and configurations, though details about pricing are not clear yet. Users are not used to the idea of dual screen tablets, so this is a novelty, but the users have the option of using the two screens together to get the complete tablet experience.
