Handset Review: Dell XCD 35

0

Dell XCD 35 is not a new phone, it’s been quite a while since it was launched. However, what makes it better now is the fact that its price has dropped considerably to a little over Rs 8,500, making it really competitive.

A few months back its competitors were LG Optimus One P500, Samsung Galaxy Fit and Pro and HTC Wildfire, but with price reduction (un official though), it now competes with Galaxy Pop, Micromax Bling 2, and Motorola Fire.

The phone sports a 3.5 inch capacitive screen with a 480×800 pixel resolution, which is amongst the highest even in category slightly above it. This means that you will get the best display amongst its budget mate – one of the very important points of difference as most phones around this price range have more or less identical spec sheet.

So let’s see how it fairs against the competition and whether it makes sense to opt for this smartphone over others.

Looks

The device looks good with totally grey finish, the back panel looks like made of aluminum but is actual a plastic unit, and you will now that as soon as you touch it. The build quality is good, very subtle design elements like angular glossy finish around the camera and strip on both the sides add some glamour to the otherwise monotonous but good design.

The front is dominated by 3.5 inch screen and three physical buttons. On the right side, there are volume rocker and speaker buttons while the left side is devoid of any button and so is the bottom of the phone. The top side has 3.5 socket and power button.

While the volume rocker and power button is well placed and offers decent feedback, the three physical buttons (Menu, Home and Back) are very small and does not offer much feedback although it’s not a deal breaker.

Specification

It’s an entry level phone and though the build quality is good, it lacks the powerful specs. It has a very basic with 600 speed, but then that is there with all the phones in this price bracket.

The phone also comes with a 3.2 camera, without flash. However, it does a good job of taking pictures as well as videos. Low light performance obviously suffers due to the lack of Flash.

All the other features of a typical Android phone is all present including WiFi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, Proximity sensor, gravity sensor, and etc. However, WiFi is just b/g which means it is not the fastest. 3G support comes at a decent 7.2 Mbps speed while it has 2.1 version instead of the latest Bluetooth 3.0.

The phone uses the stock version of Android Froyo, and Dell would do well to upgrade it to Gingerbread as most new phones like the Motorola Fire are based on this version. An upgrade to Gingerbread will also push the life of this phone for another 6-8 months.

Performance

Being a budget device, we were not even expecting a blazing fast performance and as expected it is not. However, the device never hung during the entire review period of about two weeks. It does have a lag between the input and the desired result but the lag is not long enough to annoy.

The display is by far the biggest amongst its peers (most phone have 3.2 inch display in this class) and also among the best in terms of resolution. The pictures, wallpapers and icons where displayed well with sharp and clear rendering. Watching videos or pictures was also good especially when compared to others in this class.

Dell has not put any new UI (user interface) layer over the Android, and it uses the standard and music player, which does not offer much options. The FM radio is also present but there are absolutely no options other than scanning for the channel and increasing volume. You can’t save a channel; there is no option to switch on the speaker either. However, it is an Android device and you can certainly download a new one of your liking.

The camera app has been modified slightly and it works well. You get a horizontal bar on top of the camera app which lets you control the exposure and focus. There are multiple scene modes which are also well executed. Although the camera is a just a 3.2 megapixel unit without flash, the results that it delivered where better than other cameras with similar spec. Low light shots definitely suffer due to the lack of flash but even moderate lighting where enough to get clear shots with good colour and sharpness.

Battery life delivered by the small 1250 battery is nothing great as even with moderate usage we had to recharge it everyday.

The supplied ear phone is very basic in quality and though there was no distortion even when you put the volume at max, the max output itself is low, which many buyers might not like. But then, it has a 3.5 mm jack which means that you can use any other headphone.

Verdict

At the price that it sells, Dell XCD35 is a good value for money. However with growing competition, Dell will need to act fast and release updates for it to be relevant for long, and for the consumer to look at their phones as a viable option.

For a user on strict budget, it is a good buy with good build quality and specification as others in the category. There are very few choices that you can choose against the XCD – one of them being Motorola Fire which is a Touch and device with similar pricing and Android 2.3 version (which is the latest generation). There are others like Samsung Galaxy Pop but it has a smaller screen and the same version of Android (2.2) as XCD35.

Game Review: City Jump Strike Back

0

City Jump is one of the most played games on the platform. The free game offers unlimited game play in three different modes or story modes along with a nice and ever growing difficulty as you go up. Well the frogman, the building walker of City Jump is again back in action and this time only the game has gotten a new twist and some newer bosses to fight as well. So take on some alien foes and fight your way up to the pinnacle, well theoretically in this revengeful game of City Jump Strike back.

The game takes you to the year 2500 AD beyond where the skyscrapers are never ending and are covered with alien robots and our hero is trying to rid the city of them. The game carries on with its unique power up system – if the hero kills three similar type of robots, he gets a similar type power up for a moment. The power ups range from silver surfer to human torch and even the frog man.

The graphics quality of the game has definitely improved in this never ending game and the control algorithm seriously feels better and much refined. The game play might seem to be similar to the Ninjump game but not to worry as the storyline now is totally changed and better than the Ninjump game.

The inclusion of online top score sharing adds a new level of rush to the game as now players can compete with fellow city jumpers across the globe.

The developers have decided that there will be only a free ad supported version of this application, for now at least. So users can enjoy this game as much they want along with the random advertisements that are at times a bit annoying.

The application can be downloaded directly on the Android 1.6 and above devices from the Android Marketplace or alternatively user can also follow the link to download it also.

App Review: Periodic Table

0

Those who are currently in a Chemistry class, or need to join one or just want to revise their Chemistry knowledge would love to have the Periodic Table application from Socratica on their phones.

The shows the details of a random element when the users tap on the “Learn” button. The details of the elements include thermodynamic, material, electromagnetic, atomic, reactivity, and nuclear properties. Users can also discover the symbol of an element, atomic number and mass of it.

Whenever the users need to know about one particular element, they can go straight to that element with the help of the full periodic table &#151 here the pinch to zoom functionality comes very handy for the users. The elements have been colour coded on the basis of the group they belong to. The users can also test their knowledge when they feel confident enough with what they have learned.

Overall, this is an excellent reference application which informs the users about more than 30 properties and facts about every element.

However, problem arises when the users scroll down the screen while answering the questions, which slows down the app experience. The user interface also does not look polished enough.

It’s good for the users that Period Table for Android is free currently.

App Review: Pops

0

Pops is an which makes the usual notifications for mails and SMSes look more attractive. Most users have their notifications rather dull, in the form of an envelope icon, or a speech bubble for SMSes, if they have done nothing to improve it. The same notifications look much better and colourful with the help of this Android app (Pops).

The interface of Pops app is very smooth and responsive. To use the app, users just have to open it, choose their animation, configure settings and the notification come just the way they want it.

Users have the option to choose their own animations or videos for download. Currently there are only 31 animations available.

Users also have the ability to create their own notifications. They just have to create a new video with the camera of their phone, or even choose a video from their own files, and they can easily make it their new notification theme.

There is a pending notification panel also which users can use to access earlier alerts which they have missed due to some reason. The app works especially well when the screen is inactive. Once the users want their notifications to be discreet again, they can easily disable these Pops notifications.

The Android Pops app is a joy to use and very much fun. Users can easily put their phone on silent when in a meeting or while in a theatre, and they can still be confident their will receive all their messages without fail.

Currently only notifications for Gmail, SMS, Facebook and Twitter are allowed and users would definitely want more services to be added to it.

Symbian Belle to roll out in India by year end

0

Nokia Symbian Belle update will be rolled out gradually for the existing Nokia Symbian Anna update running devices by end of this year, the vice president and managing director of the company, D Shivakumar, told The Mobile Indian.

Nokia has recently announced three handsets running new Symbian Belle update &#151 Nokia 700, Nokia 701 and Nokia 600. These handsets were launched by D Shivakumar Nokia India along with Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan.

The Symbian Belle update is successor to the Symbian Anna update. Announced just last month, Symbian Belle brings resize-able widgets, up to six home screens, improved lock screen, notifications drawer and most importantly &#151 Near Field Communication. The three new Nokia devices 700, 701 and 600 will come pre-loaded with Symbian Belle.

Post conference, D Shivakumar informed The Mobile Indian that about 50 developers (Symbian Platform) have been working closely with the company to roll out NFC-based applications by the time Symbian Belle arrives for supporting devices in India.

The Mobile Indian also learned that in the first league of enabled smartphones, Nokia will mostly focus on partnering and help develop the ecosystem to educate the masses about the different uses of NFC. The Symbian Belle handset successors with NFC built-in will stay focused on mobile payments and mobile transactions. Till then, we would just be able to enjoy the low-power and close range content sharing and coupons remittances across the country.

Symbian Belle brings the new notification bar that offers four toggle switch shortcuts to important services like Data Connection, Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS. When the notification bar on the top is pulled down, it serves as the notification tray and offers summarised information about the notifications.

One can add the resizable widgets on the six different home screens available. Built using the Qt framework, the resize-able widgets also support in-widget scrolling for emails, notes and other things.

Symbian Belle brings most interesting feature &#151 Near Field Communication which was demonstrated using a unique approach by Nokia India. The new Just Tap application has been launched as part of digital promotion of the upcoming movie &#151 Ra.One. With the Just Tap application, users can redeem the exclusive Ra.One content by simply enabling NFC and tapping it at the special posters located in Multiplexes and Nokia Priority Partners.
The poster contacts a special NFC chip developed by Philips Semiconductor and the front imagery will have a speech bubble stating &#151 just tap here. This NFC chip has special content embedded on it. With one of its kind implementation of NFC for content sharing, Nokia aims to put the Symbian Belle based smartphone in several uses like coupon redeeming, content sharing and more.

By the end of this year, Symbian Belle will be rolled out for Symbian Anna running devices that include N8, E7, C7, C6-01, X7, E6 and 500. Out of these handsets, Nokia C7 already has an NFC chip but the functionality would be only enabled when it is updated to Anna.

Many Android apps won’t run on BlackBerry PlayBook

0

Any application which uses Google Maps, in billing, SIP VoIP (Voice-over Internet Protocol) and live wallpapers would not be usable on the BlackBerry PlayBook.

This has been revealed by the Research In Motion engineers at the Droidcon conference in Romania.

According to a blog, “Key features which will be unavailable to Android apps running under the compatibility layer on the PlayBook and future BlackBerry devices include Android’s famed battery-sucking Live Wallpaper, SIP and SIP VoIP, anything built using the Native Development Kit, apps containing only App Widgets, and apps containing more than one activity tied to the Launcher.”

This is definitely bad news for BlackBerry PlayBook which had promised that the Android apps would work on the device through an Android app player, thus delivering the best of both worlds for the users, QNX platform as well as the Android apps. With this news, the viability of the BlackBerry PlayBook ecosystem has come into question as it’s clear if there are no apps on the device users are not likely to buy it either.

Google Maps or in app billing are essential for several apps and their absence will not be welcomed by users or developers. In app billing is absolutely essential for the survival of freemium apps which generate their revenue from in app billing alone.
