Google Nexus S gets Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update

0

Google has started rolling out the new 2.3.6 Gingerbread update for Nexus S GT-i9020 devices for users located in the USA, Canada and a few other regions. However, the update is not made available to all Nexus S users in the selected regions.

This update, started last week, brought a fix for Voice Search. However, the detailed list of improvements has not been made available yet.

Significantly, after applying the Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update several Nexus S users complained and pointed out the nixed WiFi and tethering. That might be the reason this update is not being released to the general public, but only to users who are bound to select carriers.

So far the update does not appear to bring any new feature to the table and all eyes are set on the Ice Cream Sandwich update, which is expected some time later this year.

Therefore, beware of getting the update from unknown sources.

Details of new Amazon tablet surface online

0

Amazon is reportedly working on a 7 inch tablet that will come loaded with the company’s own version of operating system. The author of TechCrunch managed to get his hands on the device and got a confirmation from the company that the tablet will cost $250 (Rs 11,250).

Most likely to be branded Amazon Kindle tablet, it will have a multi touch 7 inch colour display, operating system, and a bunch of Amazon apps.

The Amazon tablet will carry an operating system built from scratch using the Android OS code, but the prototype unit did not visually indicate the presence of Android. The user interface of the tablet will complement the Amazon.com redesign that is currently being tested.

The tablet will carry all the Amazon Apps &#151 Kindle Reader, Amazon Cloud Player, Instant Video Player and Amazon Store for apps. From the details so far it appears that the Amazon tablet will have an OS that supports a host of apps for cloud services.

The hardware of the tablet would be pretty similar to that of rival Nook Color. Amazon tablet will have a two finger multi-touch capacitive display and won’t have an e-ink version. The tablet will carry a single core chip and would offer about 6 on-board storage. The final version should carry a memory expansion slot as 6 GB storage is too less for storing multimedia.

The Amazon tablet will be a WiFi only version as it seems the company wants a wider reach rather than the headache of carrier tie up. In terms of looks the tablet appears like the RIM BlackBerry PlayBook but with a rubber back for better grip. Unfortunately, Amazon won’t add a camera to the tablet.

The upcoming Amazon Kindle tablet will compete with Barnes & Nobles’ Nook Color in terms of pricing and form factor. Apparently this tablet is meant for reading books, watching movies online and listening to music. From the details, the tablet does sound interesting to voracious readers who wish to carry several digital books while traveling, and who also want to listen to music. Unless Amazon’s cloud based music and instant video services are made available in several countries, the tablet’s fate seems limited to the USA and a few other countries.

Acquire app for iOS connects to Adobe Photoshop remotely

0

Be it feline photos or nature, the phone’s camera has long way to go to compete with a full-fledged camera. That is where desktop based image editing software comes handy to correct the images. Flying Car has developed a new app &#151 Acquire for Photoshop, for the users to help them quickly send their photos to the Adobe Photoshop CS5 software in their personal computers instantly over the air. Even your already clicked photos can immediately be pushed to the Adobe Photoshop CS5 directly.

The new ‘Acquire for Photoshop’ app uses iOS device’s data connection to send the photos from the iPhone to desktop based software. The app uses Adobe Remote Connect functionality feature introduced with Photoshop CS 5. The new Acquire app is meant for those who regularly use Photoshop for image editing or any digital artist.

Acquire lets you take a fresh photo and also send existing images to Adobe Photoshop. So you will have to customise the remote connection settings in Adobe Photoshop. Use Adobe apps like Nav, Color Lava and Eazel to enable the remote connection settings for the companion app with Photoshop.

Basically it’s just a syncing app that provides a user interface to send images via a specific secured connection to Adobe Photoshop directly. Ideally such app should be free but currently it is available for $1.99 from Apple App Store . This app requires the iOS devices with camera and the ones running iOS 4.0 or higher.

Wikitude Drive &#151 Navigate with augmented reality

0

Popular augmented reality products’ maker Wikitude has developed a new solution that takes the based navigation to a step beyond with the addition of augmented reality to it.

Augmented reality is simply superimposing valuable information over the real world objects that we see. Wikitude has done the same thing with their new product – the Wikitude Drive.

With Wikitude Drive, simple GPS based navigation is turned in to a more informational and accurate driving information system for the drivers as they can see the real world picture with the additional route information and turn by turn navigation.

In comparison to simple GPS based navigation systems, it is better as it overlays the information pertaining to navigation on the existing imagery recorded by the devices’ camera simultaneously. So using this, one can see the road ahead with live traffic in addition to the route information.

According to Wikitude, “Wikitude Drive solves a key problem that all other navigation systems have. These systems require the driver to take his eyes off the road in order to look at the abstract navigation map. Just by looking at the map screen for one second when driving at 100 km/h (62 mph), the driver is actually “blind” for 28 meters (92 ft). Think about how much can happen in those precious meters. Since Wikitude Drive provides you with driving directions on top of the live video stream, you still see what is happening in front of you when looking at the display of your mobile AR navigation system.”

Since the concept and the application itself are very new, it is available for only a few phones running Android v 2.1 and above including Samsung Galaxy Tab, Google Nexus S, HTC Nexus One, HTC Desire, Sony Ericsson X8, Sony Ericsson X10i.

Wikitude is presently available for a handful of countries that does not include India but since it is a growing market for smartphones, Wikitude may soon release an India specific application for Android smartphones.

Unlike its previous world browser, the Wikitude Drive application is not free for use. Users will have to pay a price ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 700 as one time fees for this application from the Android Market.
