Two more Android vulnerabilities revealed

0

Researchers have found two new vulnerabilities in operating system. According to researchers Jon Oberheide and Zach Lanier some malicious apps could get installed on Android devices without taking the users’ permission.

The researchers created a proof of concept which posed as an expansion pack for Angry Birds and once it was in the device it installed three more apps without asking users for permission. The exploit also monitored text messages, contacts and location information which were then transmitted to a remote server.

The second bug, known as teamjoch, lives in the Linux kernel where Android itself comes from and it allows even those apps that have limited permissions, full control over the device.

The researchers said, “The second bug is a Linux kernel privilege escalation that affects a significant subset of Android devices…. we’re currently an unprivileged user with the unique identification of the terminal app. If we run teamjoch exploit, our privileges are instantly escalated and we’re presented with a root shell. An unprivileged application can exploit this vulnerability to escalate privileges and gain full control over the device.”

Instagram 2.0 for iPhone and iPad

0

A new version of photo sharing Instagram has been launched for devices. The new Instagram 2.0 has a redesigned user interface with four new filters. The camera has also been provided with a new technology layer.

Instagram is managed by just six staff members and 150 million photos had been uploaded on the app by August. The number comes as a big achievement considering that the app is available only on iOS devices.

The filters have been rewritten in a manner to make sure users don’t have to wait long to apply one to a picture. The company says the new filters work 200 times faster than they earlier did.

“We’re excited to provide four brand new filters: Amaro, Rise, Hudson, and Valencia. With these new filters we continue the trend of turning regular photos into beautiful snapshots. What’s most exciting to us is that we’ve teamed up with @colerise, an extremely popular Instagrammer, to produce these new effects.

Keep your eye out for more collaborations to come,” said the company while announcing the launch of Instagram 2.0.

Even those who believe Market had managed to catch up with Apple’s App Store in terms of look and feel as well as selection of apps would agree that Instagram is one app which is lacking on Android devices.

Initially Instagram 2.0 looks very similar to its older versions, but while taking a picture the interface turns out to be hugely different.

Metro apps to be available through Windows store only

0

The recently announced Windows 8 platform will have exclusive access to Metro apps. These apps are meant for the Windows Mobile user interface, called the Metro user interface.

The company feels that the move will ensure better discoverability, easier enforcement of software trials, and the facilitation of in-app purchases. The move mirrors what Apple does for iPhone and iPad while it is in contrast to Android, for which apps are available across different stores.

The eco-system is very open, and is facing a problem in the security area as a lot of malware attacks have been reported since users download apps from other stores. Similarly, there is also the problem of user experience being inconsistent on different applications.

The regular desktop apps, which will also work on Windows 8, will continue to be available from both Microsoft controlled stores (Windows Store will also have a “free listing service” for non-Metro Windows apps,) as well as from developer sites.

Also, enterprises can still bypass Microsoft’s Windows store to test apps before using them by side-loading ((i.e. downloading them onto a computer before installing on other devices).

Microsoft has also disclosed that it will share revenue on a 70:30 ratio with 30 per cent for Microsoft and the rest for the developer. There will also be a small annual fee that developers on the Windows platform will have to pay. This is very similar to what Apple does on its platform.

What impact will it have on the pricing of apps? Well, that only the future can tell us, when more details about terms and conditions emerge.

Other operators like Aircel, Uninor, Loop Mobile and Etisalat have also registered minor growth.

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is the most popular standard for mobile telephony systems in the world. CDMA is the other technology platform on which Indian telcos offer services. Tata Teleservices (TTSL), Reliance Communications and MTS are the main CDMA operators.
