First Look: HTC EVO 3D

0

Some time back HTC announced its first flagship Evo 3D smartphone for the Indian market. With the launch of Evo 3D people in India now have a much needed choice as far as 3D smartphones are concerned.

Here is our first experience with the HTC Evo 3D:

Considering smartphones like the HTC Sensation that were launched some time back, the HTC Evo 3D misses out on the Aluminum casing or body shell to protect its delicate interiors. Having said that, the device does not lack on the build; it feels at least as strong as most HTC smartphones we have seen in the past. HTC might have discarded the aluminium body to make it lighter and even the plastic cover the device weighs 170 grams.

Evo 3D comes only in black colour and it looks good. The back panel of the device has a matte finish that protects it from scratches and gives the user the freedom to handle the device freely.

HTC Evo 3D is based on Google’s Gingerbread 2.3 operating system with HTC Sense 3.5 user interface, which is quite intuitive and impressive as well.

Powered with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon system on a chip MSM 8660 running at 1.2 GHz with a dedicated Adreno 220 graphics engine it sure is fast The phone also features 1 of and 32 GB of onboard storage along with an card slot for extra memory.

The best part of Evo 3D is that it features two 5 cameras at the back that make it capable of capturing real 3D visuals. Evo 3D is capable of capturing 3D visuals at 2 megapixel as well as 720p 3D video at 30 frames per second.

Apart from 3D video the camera is capable of recording full 1080p high definition video at 24 frames per second along with 5 megapixel 2D still images. There is also a very convenient hardware button to switch the camera mode between 2D and 3D.

To complement that, the HTC Evo 3D features a 4.3 inch autoscopic display. Autoscopic displays do not require the user to wear glasses for viewing 3D visuals. The display offers bright and vibrant visual reproductions in 540 x 960 pixel resolution.

The device looks good but is a bit expensive, but there are 3D capabilities on this device that no other device offers so this device in a way justifies its price point as well. And As far as the device’s performance goes that will only be unfolded once we get to lay our hands on the device. So until then, stay tuned.

BlackBerry to support location based services through WiFi

0

Location based services will soon be able to locate BlackBerry devices using the device’s WiFi network. Research In Motion has revealed the incorporation of a new technology for the BlackBerry devices that will allow the devices to transmit their location details based on the WiFi network they are connected to.

Unlike existing services like the or cell site location tracking that were being used in BlackBerry devices till now, the WiFi based geo-location service provides a better, faster alternative in comparison to the earlier two.

The WiFi based geo-location is relatively lesser accurate but can provide a faster fix on the location as compared to about 30 seconds taken by GPS which also accounts for higher battery usage. In contrast with the cellular service based tracking, the WiFi tracking turns out to be more accurate to about 60-200 meters.

BlackBerry’s latest operating system – the 6 is already optimised to benefit from this and same has already been added in to the Application Programming Interface which the developers can use in order to leverage this functionality for application that need to be location aware.

Besides, it will definitely be helpful for application and other location based services that are used to power social networking application like foursquare and Facebook etc.

Although the service has already been rolled out and the API is also available but it will take some more time in order to be fully functional or active.

Now multiple sign in feature available for mobile Gmail users

0

Google has introduced multiple sign feature to mobile version of Gmail. When the users go to the bottom of the Gmail web app, they need to tap the email address they are logged into the Gmail which brings forth a menu enabling the users to switch between different Gmail accounts, or sign into a new account or even sign out of all the accounts.

Users also get the option to edit their settings in the mobile version of Gmail, which happens through the settings icon in the menu bar. Users can choose a mobile specific signature for their Gmail account, which can be formatted and can be used to convey to other users that you have a smartphone as well.

About the signatures, the Gmail blog says, “We know that autocorrect and other mobile spell-checks can be frustrating as you are typing on the go. Let your friends know that you are responding via your mobile phone so that they understand why you might have sent a message that you are meeting for “monitors” and not “mojitos”. It’s an easy way to make them understand why your message might be short or have a few typos.”

For quite some time, the desktop version of Gmail supported multiple sign in feature but the same was not available for the mobile version of Gmail. Google is quietly adding more features from its desktop version to the mobile specific web app, which shows they care about their mobile users.

Those who use a bookmark to access Gmail on their mobile will need to update the bookmark since the URL has been changed by Google to support the multiple sign in feature.

Destinia comes to Android

0

Gamevil, the developers of famous game Zenonia and the fermium version Zenonia 3, has announced the launch of its latest game Destinia on Android. With this, the game becomes a part of the Google App store and is available as a freemium game.

Destinia is a story about one guard – Duke, who is imprisoned after defying an order to murder innocent civilians. There he is nursed to health by the Rebel princess Crystal. The two form an alliance to escape the prison and fight the Empire.

The game has a definitive storyline and increasing difficulty levels can be easily overcome with the upgrades bought by the cash or gold collected by killing guards and creatures.

The developers have labelled this game to provide over 30 hours of game play, but that stands correct for dedicated gamers. Casual gamers will find this attractive enough and may take some more time to finish.

The Destinia game is available for free for download from Google’s Market. Users can search for the application on their devices or the computer or alternatively users can follow the link to download application.

Air 3 update to provide console like gaming experience on iOS devices

0

The Air 3 cross-platform development runtime from Adobe is out in the market now and the company says it will allow game developers to use Flash, Actionscript, JavaScript, and other technologies to create high quality 2D and 3D games for devices. Flash doesn’t work on iOS devices, but Air 3 does work on the iOS devices as well as even Mac and Windows.

Those who have used TweetDeck have a good idea how well an application built with Adobe Air works. Even another popular game, Machinarium for iPad is also built using the Adobe Air.

Adobe is in a slightly precarious position right now because it needs to be present on iOS devices, from which it was barred earlier. Adobe says users will be able to play 3D games in web browsers or iOS devices in the same way that they do on consoles.

It’s okay to take the claims from Adobe slightly sceptically, but it is also a positive for the game creators to have one more way to bring their games on the iOS devices. Air 3 will be available for all only in early October.

The major features for Air 3 would include accelerated 2D/3D graphics which will provide 1,000 times better performance than earlier version of the same software.

Now show live video to Facebook friends through Color app

0

Facebook has announced the availability of a new photo-sharing – the Color app.
With the new mobile app, users would be able to send live video captured from their mobile phone cameras right to their Facebook friends &#151 it doesn’t matter whether they are on smartphones or on the Internet.

The app is still at an early stage, hence users should not expect it to work like Skype or Facetime since they would not be getting any audio to go with the video.

To use the app, one needs to install it on their iPhone 4 or phone with a video camera. Next they need to log into Facebook. All the photos uploaded by the users on Facebook is visible in reverse order, means the last picture uploaded will appear first and so on.

Hosting a visit on Facebook is more interesting since the users can invite their friends to join in and show them whatever their camera is seeing. For example, if they are walking through a new city, their visitors on Facebook can watch everything through their smartphone camera.

Initially, the Color app will be available to few Facebook users and the company may open it for all later depending on the user response.

By default the Sony Tablet S comes with Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablet operating system but it is quite likely that the Android 3.2 Honeycomb update will be ready for install when the tablet is launched in India. However, there is no confirmation since the update might take a while and may not bring the Video Unlimited service to India as yet.

Pricing of this tablet will play in important factor since couple of competitors had introduced tablets in India at around Rs 35,000 which certainly spooked out many consumers.
