New MobiUs to run apps as native applications

0

AppMobi has launched MobiUs, a mobile web app developed specifically to run apps written in HTML5. MobiUs is a new mobile browser that, for the first time, powers web apps and even websites with the same capabilities as native apps.

What this means is that a webapp will have access to features like gravity sensing, accelerometer, GPS, camera, sound and vibration, file system, of the smartphones and therefore will work in the same way as the native apps that you need to download and install on to your phone before using them.

MobiUs works either as a standalone mobile browser or it can power web apps and websites with full native app functionality from a person’s favorite mobile browser, such as the browser for iPhone. MobiUs for iOS is available in the Apple App Store as a free app. version is not yet available but will be available within first three months of 2012.

Until now, web apps and websites have had limited capabilities, technically incapable of utilising most of the hardware and software features of the smartphones. This mean that web apps never became as popular as native apps.

MobiUs integrates APIs (Application Programming Interface) from PhoneGap and appMobi to give web apps the same performance, look and feel as native apps. HTML5 offline caching lets MobiUs run web apps even when network connectivity is unavailable. Once a web app is bookmarked in MobiUs, the app is stored on the smartphone, so it loads instantly and can run with or without Internet connectivity, just like a native app.

“Because gameplay accounts for a large percentage of the time, people spend with their smartphones. AppMobi has embedded its DirectCanvas HTML5 game acceleration technology within MobiUs. DirectCanvas supercharges the performance of a game’s physics calculation and screen drawing by an astounding 500 per cent, making web games played via MobiUs as fast and responsive as native app games,” appMobi said in a statement.

Interestingly, MobiUs is also claimed to be the first smartphone browser to enable push notifications for HTML5, giving web apps the power of push notifications not just in the form of familiar text notifications, but with full multimedia messages powered by HTML5 that can include text, animations, audio and video messages.

MobiUs also includes appMobi’s 1Touch digital wallet technology, allowing developers to include a single click payment process within their web apps.

Dolphin browser does not store user data

0

Dolphin mobile does not pose any threat to users’ privacy, its developers have said dismissing reports that claimed the browser store user data on its server.

A couple of days ago, a member of XDA forum alleged that Dolphin browser’s webzine feature saves browsing history on the Dolphin servers. But the developers of Dolphin browser, in a blog posting, stated that the information that has been circulating in the market pertaining to the security issues is wrong and the dolphin browser is secure as ever posing no threat to its user’s identity.

“At Dolphin, privacy and user safety has always been (and will continue to be) our top priority. A few days ago, it was called to our attention that our newest version of Dolphin for 7.0 relays browsing information to a Webzine-specific URL. This information was never stored on our servers, and no browsing information has been captured about our users,” said Dolphin developers in the blog post.

“Webzine simply performs an ancillary check if we can view current webpage in Webzine format. It is not critical and we have temporary removed this functionality in our latest update yesterday. In terms of security, on a scale from one to ten, this is a zero. Dolphin does not store browsing history nor user personal information and we have never done so in the past,” it further added.

The Toggle webzine feature that is responsible for all this confusion has been immediately disabled on the mobile browser to avoid further confusions or issues. But as the developers feel that this feature is a relevant one for the users therefore it will be added to the browser later as an optional feature and it will be up to users to use it on their own discretion.

Updated Android Market app now available

0

Last month, Google rolled out an updated version of Android Market for devices with Android 2.2 Froyo and above operating systems. And now Google is again back with yet another upgrade of the app with some real nifty upgrades and improvements.

Google has added the much awaited Automatic update for all application in the new version. With this feature, the Android Market application will automatically set all the applications on auto update mode and no user discretion is required.

Along with that the much awaited voice based search has also been added to the search widget so users can actually speak to their phone and ask it to download applications.

Another neat update or addition to the Android Market application is the addition of the WiFi only upgrade path that allows users to conserve or mobile by updating and downloading apps over WiFi only as default. Secondly, the new application can now be selected to automatically add shortcuts to the home screen for the newly installed applications as well.

From the previous update, the (Personal Identification Number) authentication for application or content purchases via the market application has been continued. This prevents accidental purchases or rather will minimise them especially when the movies and other content are also starting to be featured on the Android Market.

The application update is available via Over the Air only and the notification will appear on your device as soon as the application is available for your device and the particular region. If you are amongst the ones who cannot wait any more for laying your hands on the file then you can use the third party link mentioned below. But beware it’s an external (3rd party) link and The Mobile Indian does not provide any sort of guarantee or warranty with this link. We have tried the application ourselves and it works perfectly fine.

Presently the application will only work for smartphones running Android 2.2 and above.

How to optimise audio output on Android devices

0

Android smartphones are totally fun to explore. The real beauty of is that one can tweak a component or function of the phone to get the best out of it. While many people enjoy music on Android, several also complain about the unusable music player and mediocre output in some devices.

Here is a quick guide on how to get the best possible audio output on any Android smartphone. Do note that the output may vary from device to device but it certainly gets better than the stock version that Android comes with.

Different handset manufacturers use a diverse set of hardware for Android, but thanks to some amazing developers we have apps that can get the best audio output with no hacking required.

Step 1

Download and install the Equalizer from Android Market.

Step 2

Load the application and press continue to move to the next screen. Then select any of the eight pre-configured presets or configure one according to your choice. Those who don’t want to mess around with presets can choose the pre-configured ones.

Choose a preset to suit the type of music you listen to &#151 Classical, Dance, Folk, Heavy Metal, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Pop, Latin or Rock.

Step 3

Plug-in the earphones you’re going to use. Make a swipe gesture from right to left across the screen and jump one screen to your right to reach the Sample Track settings page. On this page you can configure your custom settings based on either the sample track or you can select the song of your choice to set up a base line. Note that this free version does not allow you to store or save custom presets.

Step 4Step 5

Set the intensity of the Bass Booster and Equalizer options to anything between 50-75 per cent.

Now the Android device is ready for music. Just use any music player to enjoy the improved performance with the Equalizer app. You can also add the Equalizer Widget to the home screen with the slider settings.

We would certainly recommend trying out the PowerAMP audio player with the equalizer to listen to lossless audio files. PowerAMP also offers built-in equalizer presets and allows the user to make changes using sliders. Also, the PowerAMP player promises better performance for devices that run versions below Android 2.3 Gingerbread. If you are satisfied with output, you could consider purchasing the full version.

Use good quality earphones to get the maximum and best output. Remember that huge headphones that are meant for music systems and PCs may not give the best output after such settings.

Top 5 messenger apps on Android

Messaging apps today provide a affordable and easy way for users to communicate with their friends. The popularity of BlackBerry Messenger encouraged developers to come out with apps for other platforms as well.

Here we have listed the top applications on for messenger based communication and these apps are absolutely free.

Fring

Fring is a popular and useful cross platform messenger application that allows users to converse amongst other Fring users while using regular 2G data on the device. The best thing about Fring is its simple user interface and clean layout that makes work fun.

Fring makes use of DVQ (Dynamic Video Quality) technology, a creation of Fring labs. This technology ensures better video and audio transmission by automatically adjusting the video and audio quality based on the type of internet connectivity available on the device.

Along with that Fring has also launched Fring Playgrounds that allows people to do video chatting with up to four people in one conversation.

Skype

Skype is better known as the wave creator for based communication as it adopted the technology even before the popularisation of Android. Skype has been by far the most innovative and well known application for VoIP based communications on Android.

The latest Skype application can be used through a headset or handsfree just the way you use it while making a regular call. Also, Skype allows users to buy credits and calls to regular mobile numbers as well.

However, users who do not use the premium features that require them to purchase and use Skype credits will see in-app advertisements while making free video and voice calls to other Skype users.

Nimbuzz

Officially started as the cross platform text chat application, voice call functionality was added to Nimbuzz at a later stage, making it a popular choice amongst smartphone users.

Very recently the company announced calling facility for smartphone users as well. It is made possible by a new peer to peer calling system, which doesn’t route the call through its servers, but makes a direct connection between the two mobile devices. Calls will therefore be connected faster and will be clearer. The probability of dropped calls has also been reduced significantly.

Nimbuzz also auto detects a suitable connection (3G or WiFi) for HD calls, and then displays an HD indicator in the calling screen in real time. Nimbuzz is in the process of announcing video calling for Android users as well and has already announced it for the iPhone.

WhatsApp

Even though there were quite a few cross platform applications available for users none offered functionality like the BlackBerry Messenger did.

But then came WhatsApp.

WhatsApp is a true cross platform messenger application &#151 it is available on Android, BlackBerry, and Windows. The messenger allows users to have text chats and share files amongst friends across different platforms.

The most convenient part of the is that it uses the phone number of the user as identity so that users need not go through a lengthy registration process. WhatsApp sends messages through the internet, hence charges are not applicable but users have to pay for data consumption.

Also, the app scans users’ address books when they sign in for the first time, and tells them which of their friends is using WhatsApp by searching its databases.

eBuddy

There are many messenger apps that allow people to communicate using different messengers at once. eBuddy is one such popular and very useful messenger application mainly because it is available on a large number of compatible services that include MSN (Windows Live Messenger or WLM), Facebook, Yahoo!, MySpace, Gtalk , ICQ, AIM (AOL) and Hyves.

Another thing that makes it a very useful and popular application is the background processing so that the application stays on always, consuming minimum battery while being available for communication.

Android 4.0 update to come in April 2012: Reports

0

The recently announced Google 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) will be available only after six months from now on, according to reports. However, the first device with the new will be the Samsung Nexus Prime which will hit the markets as soon as December this year.

While Android 4.0, which is designed for both smartphones and tablets, will bring several new features including better support, voice recognition, and ability to take screenshots.

As reports point out, the updates will arrive by 2nd quarter (beginning April) of 2012 and it is again going to be Samsung devices which will get these updates first. The official word from Samsung is that the six devices to get the update first will be Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 and all of these devices except Galaxy Note (which is coming to India on 2nd November) are already available in India.

Samsung has also said that since it had been working closely with Google on ICS, they expected to beat competitors to the market with upgrades for existing devices.

Meanwhile other operators have already confirmed through official channels that they will be updating their top of the line devices launched in 2011 to Android 4.0 but non (except Acer) have confirmed a date. Amongst Motorola devices, Xoom will probably be the first to get this update.

Asus has also confirmed it through their Facebook page, saying, “Google recently announced the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, which brings some exciting new features and capabilities. At ASUS, we pride ourselves on delivering a great experience with our products, thanks to frequent updates that further enhance our products’ capabilities. We’re delighted to confirm support for Ice Cream Sandwich on the ASUS Eee Pad Family &#151 our aim is to bring the latest Android update to the Eee Pad Series, but at this time we are unable to set a date for its release. Please stay tuned for more news on our Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade plans.”

Tablet-online.pl received a statement from Acer Poland indicating that Ice Cream Sandwich will hit the Acer Iconia Tab A100/A101 and the A500/A501 sometime in mid-January (that is when Consumer electronics show happens).

Another major manufacturer to confirm the update is Sony Ericsson, which in a reply to ‘The Inquirer’ said: “Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.”

However, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 users will be disappointed to know that their device will not be updated any further than the Android 2.3.

HTC has also publicly announced the plans for the updates, but it is expected to be late to the party as their phones are heavily modified version of Android and therefore will take more time to include their Sense user interface into the new updates. It will be a more uphill task since some of the features that were available only through Sense are now part of Android 4.0 by default.

Our expectation is that all the manufacturers who have modified skin (user interface) on top of Android will take slightly more time to update their existing handsets. Second, only high end 2011 models are going to get the updates. Third, new device will get the first priority in getting Android 4.0, updates will be done later (as it happened in the case of Android 2.3). And in all likelihood you will have to wait till April to get Ice Cream treat for your Smartphone.
