Top 5 dual-SIM mobile phones for Sept, Oct

0

Juggling between personal contacts and professional contacts is quite difficult at times, especially when one has to carry two phones. That’s where the mobile solutions come in to save the day. In less than 24 months, India has got more than 25 different dual-SIM models from different handset makers.

Dual-SIM mobile phones are very convenient as you don’t have to buy or carry an extra handset. With that only thing one probably sacrifices is the battery life which is almost half than the single SIM handset. Also there are compromises on the screen part since most of the dual-SIM handsets sport a resistive touchscreen display. Thankfully the dual-SIM handsets available in India mostly fall in the affordable price bracket with just couple of them touching the five figure price mark.

Most of the models accommodate the dual-SIM in a way that the user may have to reboot the device to choose the SIM. Very rarely one can find the dual-SIM active models where in both SIM cards are active. However, such mobile models have very measly battery life because both SIM modules try to access different networks at the same time. Here’s a list of Dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) handsets where we have mostly focused on touchscreen.

Samsung Star DUOS GT-B7722

Anyone would love a mobile phone with 3.2 inch touchscreen display and 5 camera coupled with it. The dual-SIM phone supports on one SIM and on the other SIM card. No need to worry about data connection much because this phone also offers WiFi support for faster web browsing. Despite being bit costly at the street price of Rs 10, 190, Samsung DUOS GT-B7722 offers ample amount of features to compete with the single SIM handsets in the same price range.

Samsung’s dual-SIM offering is bit diverse as it has another such offering – the E5212 costing Rs 4,070 that comes with Dual SIM Active feature &#151 means both SIM modules are active and one does not need to reboot while accessing mobile web or email when connected to the other SIM. Apparently, Samsung rules the active Dual-SIM segment as of now.

Nokia C2-06

The best dual-SIM offering from Nokia is the C2-06 ‘Touch and Type’ mobile that includes a good keyboard and a 2.6 inch touchscreen display. Dual-SIM supporting C2-06 comes with the Easy Swap SIM support &#151 easily accessible SIM port externally for one to insert and pull out SIM. Single button switching between SIM modules makes use of this handset even smoother. The phone can remember settings of up to five SIM modules. The pre-loaded Maps work without the use of by using the network-based location information. Enjoy music, gaming and also mobile web browsing with the Nokia C2-06 which is now available at best buy price of Rs 5,349.

Closest to this phone is the Nokia C2-03 which practically has no difference other than colors. For the loud music lovers, Nokia offers the X1-01 handset that comes with dedicated music keys and has a loudspeaker at the back

Motorola EX128

Following everyone’s suite, Motorola too has introduced couple of Dual-SIM models in India lately. The Motorola EX128 ‘Kingfisher’ handset comes with stylish body along with 3.2 inch resistive touchscreen display. Even a has been bundled with the handset that offers a 3 megapixel fixed focus camera to capture decent images.

This handset supports quad-band GSM networks so getting the cell signal won’t be much of an issue unless you are in some remote areas. The only hurtful aspect of this phone would be the 200 minutes worth of continuous talktime which is a bit less. In the market, the Motorola EX128 could be purchased at the best by price of Rs 5,700 approximately.

Micromax X600

India’s favorite baby Micromax has earned loads of brownie points when it comes to dual-SIM handsets in different form factors. This company offers dual-SIM handsets in candybar, and even touchscreen form factors. Out of all, the Micromax X600 is the coolest touchscreen handset that supports dual-SIM in GSM+GSM configuration. This mobile contains gravity sensor that allows the user to switch between two SIM modules simply by turning the phone upside down.

Quite a novel feature but it lags a bit when it comes to 2 megapixel camera and 5 hours of battery life. This handset can be bought for Rs 3,800 approximately.

If you want to go for a Qwerty keypad model, then go for the Micromax Q5FB that provides quick access to Facebook and easy to use keypad.

Lava A10

One of its kind dual-SIM handset that sports 3 inch IPS panel technology built touchscreen display with 240×400 pixel resolution. For pleasant music listening experience, it comes with Yamaha Amplifier audio chip embedded inside its body and also offers FM Radio. It comes with a gun metal finish outer chassis and sports that premium look. At the back it has a 3.2 megapixel camera but don’t expect great quality with it.

For mobile web browsing it comes with Opera pre-loaded and Rocketalk for chatting. Purely for the looks, touchscreen and the decent audio quality output, this phone is quite a contender at a best buy price of Rs 4,190.

Besides these five, there are several Dual-SIM handsets that fall between Rs 2,000 to Rs 8,000 price range. Also those looking for dual-SIM should check for Spice Mi350, ViewSonic V350 and Motorola Fire XT 800 at the moment. From all three Spice Mi350 is the best bet as it supports 3G as well.

If you check out too many phones before deciding what feature you would actually like, then be ready to end up confused.

Game Review: Little G.One! Adventure

0

The movie Ra One, featuring Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, has been creating a lot of buzz. To cash in on the popularity, developers have now started developing games and related content for smartphones and other devices. One such game we got to lay our hands on is called as Little G.One! Adventure. Yes as the name sounds the game is a perfect replica of that. The game requires the players to play as G One – the main hero of the movie, who is in the quest to collect Blue Orbs and increase the score as much as possible.

The game play all in all is inspired by the movie and the character in the game, as similar to the movie character, gets thruster boots to fly in the sky while collecting the orbs. To make the game play a little difficult, there have been obstacles added in between the otherwise smooth game play in the form of grenades, missiles and a few others.

The main objective, as I mentioned earlier, is to collect blue power orbs which in turn help users to increase their score. And in order to do that the in game G One character flies on the thruster boots which also require power ups to keep flying. In between the game the developers have added a few unique power ups as well that include a rocket and a spring board as well which will help the character soar new heights in case the power in the boots run out.

There are no complicated controls for the game and all the users need to do is tilt their enabled phones to control the vertical movement of the character and receive power ups. The game changes the level of difficulty after every few orbs and at times becomes really difficult as well.

The downside of the game is that there is no online game play and all you can do is compete against your own highest score to make it better so the game becomes a little repetitive after a point of time. But for a free game, the Little G.One! Adventure offers much fun and entertainment and you can obviously compete against other people using the same phone.

The Little G.One! Adventure game is available for download on the Android Market and it is a free to use application with compatibility for all devices running Android version 2.1 and above. Users can also follow the direct link to download this application on their devices or can locate the application through the android marketplace as well.

Handset Review : AirTyme GTX75 Torrid

0

The AirTyme GTX75 Torrid mobile handset comes in slider form factor with keypad for easy typing for the users. The phone comes with a display size of 2.8 inches and TFT resistive touchscreen. The AirTyme GTX75 Torrid sports a 1.3 camera with display resolution of 1280X1024 pixels and as well. Users may already be aware the digital zoom facility pixelates the pictures, and the same happens with the images taken on this handset also.

The Java operating system based phone also comes with popular apps like Facebook, Yahoo, AOL, MSN, Twitter, Snaptu, Nimbuzz and Gtalk. Those who love to share their music around would easily be able to do so with the Bluetooth, and enjoy it themselves with the music player and video player as well as FM Radio and 3.5 mm universal audio jack. It also comes with PC Sync for easier data transfer between computer and the phone.

The keypads in the phone are well spaced and convenient for typing, which is a rarity for such phones where the keys usually look good but are difficult to type on. The build quality of the Airtyme Torrid looks good, as it looks sturdy and able to withstand some rough handling as well. On the negative side, the phone is bulky, as most of the phones these days are slicker than this one and then there is no FM radio or WiFi either. It has a 1200 battery which looks good on paper, but even when the phone was not used, the battery seemed to go down quicker than expected.

The Airtyme Torrid supports Java apps and comes armed with connentivity as well. The phone responds well to touch, as the touchscreen is more responsive than expected for the price and its slider is smooth. The USB port is a propriety one so procuring the charger may not be that easy if you lose the original charger. Last but not the least is the voice dialing feature which responds well to the and seemed to be accurate.

For the price, the phone responds quickly to touch and opens apps quickly, but at the time when users are getting used to large number of apps or other stores on their phones, the phone seems to be late to the market. The users are stuck with what they are given on the phone, not what they’d like to get.

The phone comes just 27 MB of and can be expanded upto 4GB through Micro SD card. It has a Lithium-ion 1200 mAh battery and allows users a of up to 4 hours and another good part, it supports Google Maps.

Phone book supports 1000 entries. It priced at Rs 4,999 and in three colours &#151 silver, orange and green.

The phone is compatible, with HSDPA, 3.6 Mbps; HSUPA, 153 Kbps and support for network also though the display of the phone is scratch resistant. It is an affordable phone since there is no WiFi connectivity, users will not feel free to download or upload as much data as they’d like to. The video formats supported includes 3GP and MP4.

App Review: Brief Me

0

In the fast-track life, it is very difficult for one to stay updated with every friend on his/her social networks as well as via the emails and text messages. Brief Me is one social with clean dashboard that will help you organise the data in form of streams. Inspired quite obviously from the Metro UI used in the Windows Phone, the Brief Me promises a clean and more organised presentation of the news, social feeds and other streams to the user.

After installing, the application loads with eight specific topics to choose and also offers anchor to add the Facebook and Twitter account feeds to the app. Users can choose to receive updates related to news, technology, economy, fashion-beauty, news people, lifestyle, sports and fun. Thankfully one is not bombarded with 20-50 channels to choose from. Also one can always add or remove the selected topics later.

Brief Me’s dashboard offers the topics arranged in a grid style format with more of Metro UI look. The Latest news tile constantly keeps changing with the feeds pulled from different topics and social networks. Users can also enable specific notifications related to topics and also disable them if not required. Tap on the gear icon to head to settings and register yourself with Brief Me.

The basis of Brief Me is topics which can range from needle to basically anything available in the content Directory. The most unique part of this app is that it offers you a separate stream for your and MMS messages that you may have received throughout the day. Also the Facebook and Twitter social network account streams will keep you updated with the most popular updates of the day from your friends.

To create a new stream, tap on the ‘Create a new Topic’ tile and then tap on the directory icon on the top right next to a pen icon. The surprising part is that after tapping on the Directory icon, you will either have to search for a topic or you can simply tap on the Add Topic button at the bottom of the screen to access the directory. Several topic-wise websites and blogs are classified to be added to the stream.

Thankfully this app allows pulling in RSS feeds from Google Reader service or even through Google Search. This is one reason why Brief Me earns the additional brownie point. However, it falls short to appeal visually due to its tile interface which makes it difficult to determine if the recent update is useful.

Adding new topics indeed is bit confusing and tedious affair and we hope the developers fix it quickly. One had to go back and forth between the menus even to delete a particular topic tile.

If you want to glance through the popular streams just couple of times a day, this is certainly the app for you to have. However, it may be bit uncomfortable to use heavily if one wishes to stay updated with news as well as social network updates. The Metro UI style basic user interface needs some changes and then this app will certainly bring everything on one neat dashboard.

App Review: GroupMe

0

Many of us would like to stay in touch with a group of friends in a convenient way, so whenever we have one message, it can go to all of them simultaneously. It’s much easier to send a text message to just one number, so it goes out to all your friends in one go. The creators of the GroupMe had the same idea and they came out with an app which does just that &#151 stay in touch with your group through simple SMS.

When the users launch the GroupMe app, they need to search for their contacts and include their friends in the group, which is then assigned a number. Users will need to send their messages to this number, and the entire group will receive the same message. Once the users start using the app, planning an event becomes very easy for them. This is one very simple and free way of communicating between a group of friends, and if you have contacts on BlackBerry devices as well, there is a beta version of app for them as well.

The app is extremely user friendly, and so is creating a new group in the app. Users just have to hit the plus button at the top of the app screen, and then they just have to give title to the group and then add all the new members into it. Once you have created the group, all the users will be notified once they have been included in the group. What’s more they don’t need to download the app either, they just have to send their messages to the common number assigned to the group by the GroupMe app and the message is flashed to everyone.

The app is extremely handy for mass texting, but then users need to remember the regular charges apply. There is no limit to how many groups users can form within the app.

Windows Phones to remain Qualcomm chipsets exclusive

0

Microsoft will continue to use Qualcomm chipsets exclusively for the Windows Phone devices. Andy Lees, Windows Phone Division Head at Microsoft told Bloomberg in an interview, that Microsoft currently has no plans to work with other makers for Windows Phone devices. With one uniform chipset hardware, Microsoft wants to ensure smoother performance on the Windows Phone devices.

Andy Lees informed that the heavy volume is Microsoft’s motivation to help the handset makers so that affordable handsets are offered. Even the cost of producing handsets supporting Windows Phone 7.5 is expected go down in next year. That’s because low cost of production and affordable handsets will result into less royalty to pay off for Microsoft.

Consumers will get to see more Windows Phone 7.5 devices from different handset makers. Also the interim updates from Microsoft will roll out faster for all devices because the hardware will more or less remain the same.

Microsoft also promised to bring Windows Phone handsets with dual-core and LTE supporting in coming years. However, the company did not specify the timeline.
Google platform on the other hand has several different hardware chipsets involved to roll out different handsets. That is one major reason why major system updates take a long time to roll out through the handset makers.
