App Review: Chomp SMS

0

Android users have more reason to smile now as they would save much more time from the gruelling exercise to manage one’s SMSes.

On an average, a person spends about 20 minutes a day in either reading, deleting or responding to messages. Some even spend hours on it!

True, there are applications available to manage SMSes in a smarter way. However, such apps, like the native application on the phones, is pretty complex.

If you are also of the opinion then try Chomp SMS. Chomp SMS is a free application available for the Android smartphones that makes the whole process of receiving, managing and sending the SMS a wee bit simpler.

The application tries to make the SMS conversations simpler and faster by making the conversation messenger style and by adding shortcuts to the conversation itself so that user does not need to leave the conversation at any point.

If that is not enough users can also use the picture of the person whom they are as the conversation background so that you don’t ever forget for whom you are about to say what. When it comes to simplifying the process of SMSing then this application scores full points.

Another great feature of this application is the inclusion of Skype like feature. Users can send free messages using this application and the available internet connection to their friends and buddies who are using the same application.

Also the application allows to send messages to mobile phones around the world using the applications messenger service apart from the SMS service, but for this users need to buy credit from the Chomp SMS website and is comparatively cheaper to ISD SMSes.

The only downside of this application is the advertisements. Every now and then user will see advertisements in the bottom of the application. But it does not affect the functioning of this application in any way, users are also allowed to use this application even if they are not connected to internet.

Top five CDMA phones in India

0

With the whole of India going gaga over the recent launch of services, many have forgotten the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology. There are many people who are true followers but want a better handset.

Below is list of handsets that would suit the needs of CDMA users in India.

Micromax Q5c

Micromax might not be the No. 1 handset manufacturer in India but it is giving the big companies a run for their money.

The phone borrows some of its looks from BlackBerry Curve, and scores well in the look and feel department. On the multimedia front, it features a multi format audio player and 4 of expandable memory. Featuring a full keypad, this phone is good for heavy typing and texting.

Micromax Q5c has a good 2.2 inch colour display with a decent 2 mega camera with flash. The 1300 battery supports up to 2-3 days of normal use.

It is priced at around Rs 4,000.

Samsung W529 Duos

Although it isn’t very new W529 Duos is a good CDMA phone capable of using two active SIMs simultaneously. Duos tries to keep things simple by using a multi tap keypad instead of a Qwerty keyboard.

The display measures 2 inches but produces vibrant visuals. The phone has multimedia capabilities for both audio and video playback but lacks a 3.5 mm audio jack. The 1.3 mega pixel camera is good for basic photography, and the phone scores well on looks and comfort.

It costs around Rs 5,500.

Samsung SCH M369

Samsung SCH M369 is a dual phone with Qwerty keypad. It is one of the most advanced mid range CDMA Qwerty handsets available in India, that also features 3G.

With 16 GB of expandable memory and multi format player for video and audio, multimedia fans are bound to be happy with the device. Samsung SCH M369 has a small lithium polymer battery which makes it light but compromises on talk time. Its 2 mega pixel camera does a fair job in well lit conditions.

SCH M369 would cost around Rs 6,200.

BlackBerry Curve 8330

With this device BlackBerry made its foray into the CDMA arena. Besides a 2 mega pixel camera and a 2.8 inch display BlackBerry Curve has included Wifi and GPS. The battery, BlackBerry claims, supports four hours of or 11 days on standby.

Curve is priced at Rs 22,000.

Motorola Milestone XT 800

This is the only CDMA handset at this point of time though others are said to be in the making.

Milestone features the slightly older Android v 2.1 with dual SIM capability that can use quad GSM and dual band CDMA networks.

Apart from the usual features, this Android smartphone has a 5 mega pixel camera and a big 3.7 inch capacitive touchscreen. Multimedia capabilities can be unlimited as Android operating system allows users to install newer media players and formats for playback which can play the content from its 16 GB expandable memory.

It will cost you around RS 30,000.

BlackBerry PlayBook now with pre installed music store

0

BlackBerry PlayBook now has a host of features including a preloaded music store, a bookstore and video games.

Research In Motion has announced a deal with 7Digital to provide BlackBerry PlayBook owners a preloaded music store to rival iTunes.

7digital has about 13 million music tracks and the store is already very popular among BlackBerry users.

“The 7digital Music Store is a perfect complement to the high-performance BlackBerry PlayBook, providing users with fast searches and downloads, and a slick interface that makes it very easy to discover, purchase and enjoy music,” said Alistair Mitchell, vice president, BlackBerry Messenger platform and integrated services.

RIM also lined up many other deals, including Kobo’s bookstore and video games.

Content and applications has been a weak point for RIM. This development should help the company win more customers.

Women with mobiles feel safer and empowered

0

We just celebrated International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the social, economic and political achievements of women.

Back in 1911, when the day was first observed, it was also a day of protest, to campaign for the right to work, for the vote, equal pay, education and to end discrimination. While the struggle for all this still continues in many parts of the world, a new addition in the demand should be ‘Right to mobile phone’.

Mobile phones are creating a similar impact as the voting rights that were being demanded a 100 year ago.

A recent research from the mWomen campaign, supported by Nokia, discovered that there are strong links between women’s wellbeing and access to a mobile phone.

93 per cent of women reported feeling safer and 85 per cent felt more independent because of their mobile phone.

Even financially, 41 per cent of women reported increased income and professional opportunities once they owned a mobile phone.

Women in rural areas and lower income brackets stand to benefit the most from access to mobiles as it provides them access not just to communication but also to a world of information thanks to the many services available these days — be it in the field of education, farming or marketing of produce. Mobile phones are also increasingly enabling banking services to reach rural and far flung areas, and lower income groups.

On average, a woman is 21 per cent less likely to own a mobile phone than a man is. This figure increases to 23 per cent if she lives in sub-Saharan Africa, 24 per cent if she lives in the Middle East and 37 per cent if she lives in South Asia.

However, the numbers are changing fast as prices of handsets and services fall. Women users are expected to comprise two thirds of total new mobile connections in future.

Mobile network providers and handset makers will increasingly need to customise their products to suit women’s needs better.

SPAM 2.0 on your mobile phones

0

“The home of your dreams at just Rs 2,000 per month”. On an average a mobile phone user receives up to ten to fifteen such messages in a day, consuming a lot of time of the users.

The situation is set to change for worst with companies involved with bulk coming up with automated voice messaging services.

Now a situation may arise where instead of fifteen messages you will left answering fifteen calls in a day!

The situation has arised as the cost of such calls has gone down drastically.

Where an SMS costs anywhere from 10 paisa to 1 paisa, the voice messaging services are not very expensive with 10 paisa per message with an additional guarantee of charging only if the call connects.

The scenario is not only worst for those who have not registered with the National Do Not Call Registry or NDNC, but for the registered users also.

Out of the total mobile phone user, only 15.67 per cent have registered themselves on the NDNC. This shows the reason why the SMS spam business is booming everyday.

Google Instant Preview now on mobiles

0

Searching for information on Google will now be more interesting as the company has extended Instant Preview to both and devices. The announcement was made by Google through a blog post.

A magnifying glass icon appears on top of the search page. Once users tap on it, they enter the instant preview mode where they are allowed to swipe through results.

To visit a website, just tap on any of the previews. If the site has a separate mobile version, Google will automatically provide the instant preview of that version.

The feature will help users evaluate search results better and go to the intended site fast, says Google.

Google Instant Previews will be available in 38 languages, and those who have seen the feature on a desktop will already have a fair idea of what to expect.
