0

Putting all rumours to rest, Samsung today officially showcased its latest tablet on its Facebook page.

Samsung has unveiled the new dual core 10.1 inch galaxy tab during the recent Mobile World Congress triggering speculations that it is working on a new 8.9inch tablet.

As opposed to the 7 inch and 10.1 inch tablets respectively, the new one is expected to have an out of the regular 8.9 inch display. It might just bridge the gap for those who want a smaller (as compared to a 10 inch) but not too smaller (7 inch) tablet computer. Although Samsung’s philosophy behind choosing this size is not clear.

In terms of hardware, the tablet is supposed to have a dual core Tegra or a similar WiFi- n standard along with a rear and a front cameras.

Since it will make its debut after the launch of iPad 2, the device is supposed to have a slimmer or at least a similar profile.

As Samsung remains tight lipped, picture will be clearer on March 22nd when the tablet will hit the markets.

Over 38 lakhs subscribers have opted the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service, that allows a user to retain his number while changing the service provider, till February.

Out of 38.33 lakhs subscribers, who have submitted their requests to different service providers for their mobile number, around 3.20 lakh pertains to Haryana.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) further said Gujarat has received the maximum number of requests with 3.65 lakh. While in southern and eastern India, Karnataka has received the maximum number of requests with 3.14 lakh.

Other major cities like Delhi has received 1, 73,437 requests, Mumbai with 1, 36,067 and Kolkata and Tamil Nadu received 96,382 and 2, 76,950 respectively.

The MNP service was first implemented in Haryana on November 25, 2010 and was later extended to other parts of the country from January 20 this year.

TRAI adds that it was constantly monitoring the implementation of MNP in the country. The telecom regulator believes that the prime reasons for rejection of port requests are Incorrect Unique Porting Code, Non-completion of 90 days and existing Contractual Obligation and Outstanding Dues.

The statements also said that in a view of large number of rejections and complaints, TRAI is in the process of verifying the correctness of the port rejections done by the service providers on sample basis.

70 per cent mobiles globally will cost less than Rs 4500

The rise of India and China and other emerging countries is changing the economic landscape if the world and mobile phone industry is no different.

According to Evalueserve, a company in business research domain, the global average selling price (ASP) for approximately 70 per cent (4.8 billion) of active mobile phones will fall under USD 100 (RS 4500) by 2015.

This can be attributed to the increased competition among manufacturers and focus of manufacturers on lower-middle income countries such as China and India that are cost-sensitive, but volume heavy.

Evalueserve estimates the global handset demand to rise to approximately 2.58 billion in 2015, with the replacement market accounting for approximately 94 per cent of the gross demand.

“This change in buying behaviour will be driven by two factors: rapid commoditisation of the mobile handset with progressively reducing price points, and higher tendency to switch handsets, particularly in the mass-market segment due to the low switching cost”, said Nitin Navish Gupta, assistant vice president, information, communication and technology practice, Evalueserve.

Nokia, the largest mobile manufacturer, recorded an approximately 39 per cent fall in its ASP between 2005 and 2009. Similarly, Samsung’s ASP for mobile phones declined approximately 33 per cent over the same period.

With the declining subscriber additions, the demand for replacement handsets is expected to become the key driver for the mobile market. Evalueserve estimates the share of handset replacement demand to the overall handset demand to increase from 73 per cent (1.46 billion) in 2010 to 94 per cent (2.43 billion) in 2015. Over the same period, handset demand is expected to increase from 2.0 billion in 2010 to 2.58 billion by 2015.

The research says that manufacturers are likely to churn out handset models faster than before, which will mean they will need to experiment more.

Caf&#233 Coffee Day experiments with Foursquare

Caf&#233 Coffee Day (CCD), which is already active on prominent social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, is now trying to leverage the location-based social media application/site called Foursquare.com (4sq).

The company has created its presence at Foursquare.com/cafecoffeeday and intends to use it to build loyalty and get repeat visitors. CCD will offer special discounts to 4sq users who visit any CCD outlet and update/announce the same via 4sq.

To earn discounts, the 4sq user – who has downloaded the Foursquare.com application on his smartphone – will be required to log in and open the 4sq application on his smartphone when he visits the CCD outlet. Once opened, the user will see a list of places/locations (including CCD outlets), accessed via the facility of the smartphone.

The user can click on the CCD outlet/location (where the user is present) to get more details such as ‘Consumer tips’ and ‘Mayor’ about the outlet. Apart from that, a button titled ‘Check-in here’ will be shown (on the phone screen), which the user can click to update and publish his location on the social media site.

Upon pressing the check-in button, CCD will serve a message titled ‘Special’ and provide a mobile coupon (discount) code on the user’s phone. The user will be required to show the code to CCD’s outlet manager to earn and obtain the discount.

To begin with, special discount offers will be available for users in Bengaluru. “Posters will be put up across CCD outlets to create awareness about usage of 4sq and special offers for 4sq users in Bengaluru,” says Vineet Gupta, managing partner, 22feet, the digital agency, which has conceptualised and is managing CCD’S 4sq presence. Later, the 4sq related offers will be extended to all 1,080 CCD outlets in India.

Other than special discount offers, 4sq users can write and submit their tips about the products and services offered by CCD outlets. “On 4sq, we will not only reward fans and followers, but also allow them to update and share tips/information with their friends across networks,” says K Ramakrishnan, president, marketing, Caf&#233 Coffee Day in conversation with afaqs!.

Ramakrishnan adds, “So far, we have used social media as an effective listening and communication tool to interact with our consumers. 4sq, being a location-based social medium, will not only facilitate us to communicate, but also help us to induce action in terms of visits to our cafes.”

Some other brands, which have started experimenting with 4sq are Yum Yum Tree (a Delhi-based restaurant), Blue Frog (a Mumbai-based restaurant), Inorbit Mall, and Shoppers Stop.

Yum Yum Tree has created its presence on Foursquare and invites visitors to come to the restaurant and get a free round of draught beer. Blue Frog also offers discounts to 4sq users. Inorbit runs 4sq-based contests across its stores in Mumbai and Hyderabad. It rewards repeat visitors (especially ‘Mayors’) to its locations with gift vouchers. Shoppers Stop has created an interesting Facebook-Foursquare application called Mayors@ShoppersStop (Apps.facebook.com/mayorsatshoppersstop/mayors.php), which helps a Facebook user to locate Shoppers Stop stores and its 4sq Mayors in various parts of India.

It is important to note that 4sq is still in its nascent stage in India. It is estimated that less than one lakh users are active on 4sq in the country.
