Nokia will launch three new smartphones &#151 Nokia 600, 700 and 701 &#151 running Symbian Belle by September-end in India.

A person familiar with the development said to The Mobile Indian, “Nokia has still not finalised the exact date of launch but is planning to launch Nokia 600, 700 and 701 running on Symbian Belle around Diwali in India. It is still working on the pricing of the devices.”

Nokia 600

The new Nokia 600 is said to be among the loudest smartphones from Nokia, rated at 106 phon for loudness. Since it comes with an FM transmitter and an FM receiver, you don’t need earphones to listen to your favourite radio station.

The Nokia 600 weighs a mere 100 grams while sporting a 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen with 640 x 320 pixel display resolution. It has a 5 camera with LED flash, which is capable of taking 720p video and high quality still images.

Nokia 600 also has a Near Field Communication chip that can be used with emerging apps and accessories such as Nokia Play 360 speakers. NFC-enabled versions of Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja games will come pre-loaded on the device.

NFC is a short range wireless communication technology which allows communication between two devices that are at a distance of up to 20 cm apart. Thus, NFC enabled devices can be used for making mobile payments, for mobile ticketing, and as keys for accessing cars, homes or hotel rooms.

Nokia 600 will be available in pink, lime, white and black colours, and will cost around Rs 11,800.

Nokia 700

Weighing less than 100 grams, the Nokia 700 has a 3.2 inch ClearBack with Gorilla Glass technology to prevent damage. This Symbian Belle running smartphone supports pentaband radio and networks. It is powered by a 1 GHz processor and features Bluetooth, WiFi, FM radio, a digital compass and sensor.

With 2 of onboard memory, this handset uses a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash. Like Nokia 600, the 700 too comes with Near Field Communication built-in. The phone has a speaker at the bottom. Nokia 700 will be available in grey, silver, white, coral red, peacock blue and purple colours. Its body moreover is said to be made entirely of recycled materials.

It is to be priced at around Rs 17,200.

Nokia 701

The 701 has a 3.5 inch IPS display with ClearBack technology, wrapped in Corning Gorilla Glass. Nokia claims the 701 handset to be its brightest smartphone.

This handset comes with a new, fast graphics co-processor which will have four times the graphics memory of previous Symbian handsets. This new graphics chip will be coupled with a 1 GHz processor to give the best possible performance with Symbian Belle.

At the back is an 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and the front facing camera supports video calling. By default the phone comes with 8 GB of onboard memory, but it can take up to 32 GB via a memory card.

Similar to the 700, this model features a Near Field Communication chip and will have NFC-enabled versions of Angry Birds and Asphalt 5 games. Nokia 701 promises up to 8.8 hours of over 3G networks and 17 hours over GSM. Evidently a high-end handset, Nokia 701 will come in steel dark, amethyst violet and white colours. It is expected to cost approximately Rs 19,000.

Nokia to have a bigger dual SIM portfolio

0

With increasing competition and dwindling sales figures, Nokia has in recent times been searching for segments in which to focus its resources in India.

A top Nokia executive recently defined the company’s focus areas as the less than-Rs 6,000 handsets with S40 being the desired platform and internet connectivity an important feature.

More detailed strategy emerged when Steven Elop, the chief executive officer of Nokia, visited India recently.

One thing is clear: that India is a market for devices and Nokia cannot ignore this. And the reason of this focus is very clear: the six or seven dual SIM phones that Nokia has launched in India so far have been fairly successful.

“All our dual SIM launches are doing well and we are witnessing rocketing sales. These launches have also had a halo effect on our single-SIM phones. India has shown that brand plus team plus great execution can deliver strong results,” Elop told a media gathering.

Elop attributed the success of Nokia in the dual SIM category to easy swap technology, which allows the phones to remember up to five different SIM cards and users don’t even need to pull the battery out or put the device off to switch SIMs. Also, the success of these phones has had to do with Nokia’s wide distribution network in India.

Elop clarified the Indian strategy for smartphones and stressed on the need to be present at all the price points of the smartphone market and especially at the lower end of the spectrum. This clearly means that Nokia will look at making cheaper Windows Phone 7 devices, but till then lower end smartphones from the company will be based on Symbian, which Elop has decided to make significant investment in till 2015.

Elop said, “We are all part of this group that is interested and all willing to spend a lot of money. But frankly from an economic perspective, part of the race that we will see in the Indian phone market is the extent to which you can get broader coverage of price points&#151to the extent that if you can get that lower-cost smartphone that meets the aspirations of an individual while at the same time keeping the price well down.”

Jasmeet Gandhi, head of services marketing and devices, Nokia India, had said last week that Nokia will restrict its use of Windows Phone 7 and developer ecosystem for feature rich smartphones for now.

Gandhi also added, “The low-end phones, which are priced below Rs 6,000, would have S40 (Series 40) platform to let users access web-based applications. It will be our focus area for some time to come.”

This would leave a big gap in Nokia’s portfolio, which can only be filled by Symbian devices. Symbian has already seen two major updates in the past two months in the form of Anna and Belle.

Elop did not, however, share the tablet roadmap for Nokia but did hint that the company is interested in the segment. However, Nokia’s strategy could be different when it comes to bigger devices. As he said, “We do believe that peoples’ expectations are that they have a digital experience that crosses different environments&#151 smartphone, tablets, televisions, set-top-boxes, gaming platforms, and in some markets a PC is very important.”

Could this mean Nokia will have something of a converged form of all these devices? Only time will tell, as Elop didn’t.

Motorola set to launch a Facebook smartphone

0

On the lines of INQ, HTC and Vodafone, Motorola is set to launch a brand new Facebook mobile phone. Just like the HTC ChaCha and Vodafone 555 Blue, the Motorola handset too will come with a keyboard bearing a dedicated Facebook button and obviously an operating system with Facebook deeply integrated.

Details of the Motorola EX225 came to light when the Bluetooth.org published details of the handset on its website.

As per the details mentioned on the website, Motorola EX225 will carry a 2.4-inch TFT display which is as much as any mid-level BlackBerry handset. Form factor appears similar to a mash-up of Motorola Charm and Motorola Droid Pro.

Featuring a full Qwerty keypad, the EX225 will have a dedicated Facebook key for the Facebook user interface deeply integrated in the operating system &#151 most likely to be 2.2 Froyo.

This handset has 3 camera which is quite decent for an entry level device. Apparently, this will be the second ‘Facebook phone’ to support networks and will come in single or dual SIM models for different regions.

Motorola EX225 will be released for Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, North America and South America but there is no detail on the date. Considering the certification, we can expect this handset to be showcased at the ‘CTIA: Enterprise and Applications’ event starting October 11 in San Diego, USA.

Motorola is second major handset maker to get into the ‘Facebook phone’ whirlwind and shell out a Facebook-integrated handset. We won’t be surprised if Nokia too comes out with a Facebook phone considering its close ties with Microsoft which has good stake in Facebook.

Evernote app now available for BlackBerry PlayBook

0

Evernote has announced that its is now available for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablets. The version 1.0.97 of the app can be downloaded for free from the BlackBerry App World.

The app seems to come with all the features of its previous versions including the two column view. Users can also sort the notes between All Notes, Notebooks or Tags. Users can edit the existing notes, and can create image, audio and of course the text based notes as well.

The default two column view of the Evernote can be expanded to the full screen view, and for this the users just have to tap the arrow icons located on the left of the title of the note. Users also have the option to attach files while creating their notes, as well as search their notes if they are looking for something specific in their notes and there are too many stored in the Evernote app.

The basic Evernote functions can be accessed from the top of the app, for example they just have to tap the relevant area to either add a note or edit it.

However, the Evernote app for PlayBook doesn’t have some basic features such as checkboxes I, the to-do lists and rich text notes. But then, users can be slightly forgiving since it just the first version of Evernote for BlackBerry PlayBook and more can be expected soon.

How to link BlackBerry Messenger contacts to BlackBerry Address Book

0

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Messenger is heavily addictive and a superbly economical solution for exchanging messages and small files among contacts. One may end up having an exhaustively long contact list like the ones on Yahoo, Google Talk, MSN Messenger and similar instant messengers.

The BlackBerry Messenger has a different contact list of its own and doesn’t directly integrate with the BlackBerry Address Book. That’s good in a way as users can conceal their contact details. But if you are already friends with someone you can link that person’s BlackBerry Messenger profile with his existing profile in the Address Book.

Here’s how you can link a BlackBerry Messenger Contact to the BlackBerry Address Book.

Step 1

Go to the BlackBerry Messenger and highlight a contact.

Step 2

Press the Menu key and choose the option: ‘View Contact Profile’.

Step 3

Press the Menu key again and scroll down to choose ‘Link with BlackBerry Contact’.

Step 4

Now from your BlackBerry Address Book pick a contact whose details already exist. Otherwise you can click on ‘New Contact’ and then add the relevant details.

Step 5

Press the Menu key and select ‘Save’.

After that you will have your BlackBerry Contact linked with the BlackBerry Address Book and you won’t have to ask for numbers or BlackBerry PINs again. As per recent reports RIM is working to introduce the BlackBerry Messenger for iOS and platforms as well.

Game Review: My Country

0

How many times have you ever cribbed about government not working for the welfare of the country and that if you had the power, you would have written a totally different story all together!

Well, you might not get a chance in the real life to bring such drastic changes but virtually you can. With My Country game on Android, you have a chance where you are the one to do all and be all of your country.

As the name suggests, My Country is a strategy and time based game in which all you need to do is build your city from the scratch and make it a super power or an example for everyone else. You control the population, economy, power, ecology and even the transportation system.

The game has a nice helpful interface and as the game begins it teaches the user as to how to go about doing certain things. Basic services for the country are offered to the user in the form of bonus tasks so that the user learns the importance of it and get to know how to do it. In short, the players can get a slight God-like feeling while playing this game which is great and even wonderful as all this come to you free of cost.

The application has been developed to perform well on most basic of devices. Obviously the quality of graphics will differ from device to device but yes the fun of playing this game is not taken away from anyone. There are no in-app advertisements in this game that improves the fun. Users can occasionally buy the Country dollars from the developers in order to advance faster in the game and to ensure the free and no advertisement game play of this application. Also in this game you have to control literally everything and that I guess will be liked by a lot of users.

The gloomy part of this game is that after a certain level, it comes to a standstill and it turns to money collecting only game, but starters do not need to worry as they will have a long time to play before they reach that stage. Secondly, smaller screen devices might have slight problem while playing this game as some points are so small that touching these is virtually impossible.

Overall, it is a very nice game with great graphics and even better concept that promises hours of fun and game play.

This game requires an OS 2.1+ device and you can download the My Country application on your Android device manually or can also visit the Android Market to do the same. Alternatively follow this link.
