Texas Instruments working on more efficient processors

0

Texas Instruments is working on its new 2013 OMAP (Open Multimedia Application Platform) chips which are expected to provide longer battery life to future mobile devices. Currently, Apple is considered the leader in the smartphone space with its A5 and 10 hour battery claim. The other companies in the field, Intel, Texas Instruments and Nvidia are working to make their processors more efficient.

A Texas Instrument official told Fudzilla that the 2013 OMAPs will enable “true all day computing”. One thing is clear, Texas Instrument is concentrating on providing more efficient processor rather than sheer processing power &#151 quite unlike Nvidia which is concentrating on creating more powerful chips for mobile devices.

The news is especially interesting since earlier reports suggested Texas Instruments was considering selling its OMAP division after OMAP 5 was released, but now it appears Texas Instruments believes it should rather stay in the game.

Apart from coming up with more efficient system on a chip (SoC), Texas Instruments is also targeting improved memory access and intelligent caching for the mobile devices. The other plans include using the sleep mode more often but then the mobile devices based on these processors would take some time, probably some years, to come.

Low cost iPhone only if it is a category killer: Report

0

Apple will launch a low cost iPhone only if the product was innovative and provided a category killer experience to the users, according to the RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky.
Abramsky said this after a meeting with Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook and chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer on Wednesday.

Mike Abramsky reportedly said, “Apple’s primary criterion for launching a lower-end iPhone is an innovative, category-killer experience. Those who are aware of the business philosophy followed by Apple may suggest the statement is obvious, but the statement goes against the current spate of news which suggested Apple was working on cheaper iPhone.”

Some time ago, a Deutsche Bank analyst Christ Whitmore had suggested that Apple was getting ready for a mid-range iPhone &#151 the suggestion had come on the basis of assumption that Apple intended to tap into pre-paid market.

From the meeting, Mike Abramsky also derived that Apple has maintained a consistent lead over especially due to its vertically integrated product creation process and emphasis on good user experience.
He also said that the Apple approach would help it withstand the attack of low priced Android device onslaught whereas Nokia, Research In Motion and other such companies would be adversely affected. Apple is also looking at China and India for business expansion opportunity.

Nokia to add voice texting with the upcoming Mango devices

0

According to a post on Detnews.com, Chris Weber, the president of Nokia USA, demonstrated the new technology that recognises speech and converts it into text and vice-verse. The same technology is being embedded in the upcoming Mango phones that will allow users to receive and send text messages verbally.

The technology works on a simple yet unique principle of speech recognition that allows the device to recognise what the users speaks and translate that in to text and numbers when user needs to send a message or reply to a message. And the same technology works in the reverse principle of test to speech in case of an incoming text message.

The new feature, Nokia hopes, will help in reducing road accidents as people sometime feel tempted to reply to a message while driving, temporarily diverting their attention from the road.

It is expected that this new feature will come as a standard feature for most upcoming Nokia Windows Phone Mango smartphones. However, its availability in India cannot be confirmed as of now.

0

Vodafone will launch its Facebook phone, named 555 Blue, in India this month. The telco had launched the phone in the UK some time ago for $100 (Rs 4,500).

Confirming this to ‘The Mobile Indian’, an Indian spokesperson for Vodafone said, “We will launch 555 Blue for Indian consumers in August.” However, he refused to divulge further details like launch dates and pricing.

555 Blue will be a prepaid phone and will have a locked SIM. The device is targeted at prepaid users and will offer a customised Facebook experience to people who love social networking and messaging.

The phone is not enabled but will instead use network. As a matter of fact, it is a good move because Edge enjoys far greater coverage than 3G does. 555 Blue will sport a 2.4 inch display and a keyboard designed to make it easy to chat, email, and send texts using the device.

Apart from that, it has a 2 camera with instant upload capability, a slot, and a music player with FM radio.

It also features a dedicated Facebook ‘F’ button, which is customisable in terms of assigning tasks such as instantly posting a status update with photos or with links from the browser. The device also automatically updates Facebook every 20 minutes, although this can be customised.

Interestingly, Vodafone is not the only player offering a Facebook phone. Some time back HTC had launched the HTC ChaCha and Salsa smartphones for Facebook users.

Top five friends and family tariff plans

0

For people who make frequent calls to a few selected people, friends and family plans make a lot of sense, and while some operators advertise their plans more than others do, most operators in India offer special tariffs for closed user groups.

These plans offer virtually free calling to select numbers. There is a catch to how this works. Generally, it is more expensive to call numbers other than those in the group. Here are five plans from five operators that make sense for people looking to make cheap calls to select numbers.

Tata Docomo: My Family plan 2999

This much advertised family plan is one of the best; you can have 2-5 members in your family plan and can make calls to them for 1 paisa per six seconds for as much as 167 local and STD hours, and a minimum of 50 hours of calls per month.

Calls outside the group are charged at 1 paisa per second during the day; 1 paisa for every two seconds during the night for local calls; and 1 paisa per second for all STD calls.

Activation charge for the plan is Rs 300. You also get 500 of 2G and speed data free every month, depending on availability. The plans costs between Rs 999 to Rs 2,999 and only three members are allowed in the group. You will also get 500 SMSes free under the Rs 999 plan; and up to 1,000 SMSes with the Rs 1,999 and Rs 2,999 plans.

Along with this, you also get a single bill for the entire family. It is thus a very good plan for families that talk a lot amongst themselves, especially those whose members are spread across different parts of the country.

Airtel’s closed user group plan

Airtel’s closed user group plan offers 500 minutes of calls per month to any number in the group. The plan also offers 150 local minutes free to any other number. Call rates for other numbers and beyond the free minutes is 50 paise per minute for local and Rs 1.50 for STD.

At least three members are required for this plan, for which an activation charge of Rs 500 is applicable. This will be returned by adjusting Rs 100 per month. However, if your usage is low, you will lose this money as well &#151 for a bill lower than Rs 100, only the bill amount will be refunded, the rest will not be adjusted in the next bill.

This plan is beneficial for those who make local calls most of the time as STD charges are very high in this, given the fact that other plans offer calls at 50 paise per minute.

BSNL – Family plan

BSNL’s services are cheap and its family plan is no different. The plan is not confined to BSNL numbers only and you can include other numbers also. You will be able to make BSNL to BSNL local calls at 10 paise per minute to up to five members and at 30 paise per minute to any other network.

This plan is available for prepaid customers, who can buy a for Rs 20 and recharge it with Rs 34, in which they will also get Rs 25 worth of calls and 200 SMSes free.

There are no other fixed charges: for non-BSNL numbers, local calls will be charged at 1 paisa per minute and STD will be charged at 1.2 paise per minute. Other vouchers can also be used along with this plan, which is a good thing as you can enjoy multiple benefits without any restriction.

Although call charges are not as low as they are with other plans on this list, the benefits of prepaid, no activation charges and no restriction on availing other plans makes it a very attractive plan.

Aircel: Family one bonanza

Family one bonanza is a with a rental of Rs 245. Aircel is offering 100 local Aircel minutes, 100 minutes for other local networks and 100 local landline minutes free, along with 5 paise per minute local calls to group members.

Non Aircel users can also be part of the group but the calls will be charged at 30 paise per minute. At least three members are required for this plan. top up is also available for this prepaid plan, which offers 15,000 free local SMSes for just Rs 25, and 5,000 national SMSes for Rs 50.

Calls beyond the free usage to other mobiles will be charged at 50 paise to a local mobile, 99 paise to a local landline and Rs 1.50 for STD.

This plan is only good for local calls as STD is costly. SMS packs are also an added advantage.

MTNL: friends and family

MTNL has announced a new ‘friends and family’ plan, under which users will be able to call five other frequently called MTNL numbers (mobile or landline) for 10 paise per minute, by paying Rs 50.

Customers may choose an MTNL landline or mobile number under this plan. This facility can be activated through IVR or by requesting customer care at 1503.

The plan is only available for people in Delhi and Mumbai where MTNL offers services and this limits the utility of the plan as most people have parents or siblings living in other cities.

Amidst all the current BlackBerry Messenger alternatives, the all new GroupMe only has the feature of creating a private chat room filled with known folks. The GroupMe app allows creating a private chat room with users whose phone numbers exist in user’s phone book. All users not necessarily have a GroupMe app for they can always receive messages and respond via using specific codes. In short, it doesn’t matter what mobile phone it is, you can always be part of a conversation.

Like the conversation or topic start, Question feature can be used to ask whatever to the private group or select people and get their responses accordingly. Users can also send Direct Messages to specific users but this feature is available only for iPhone and Android version of the app.

Sure, GroupMe does look like ‘free’ cross-platform messaging service but does come with couple of limitations. GroupMe service currently offers support to only nine mobile service providers of India. The participating mobile service providers of India are Etisalat India, IDEA Cellular (now includes BTA Cellcom and Escotel), Loop Mobile (India), Reliance Communications, Sistema Shyam TeleServices, Tata Teleservices, Uninor, Videocon India and Vodafone Essar (multiple circles).

So only if you have your number registered with any of the aforementioned service provider, you will be able to user the GroupMe service after receiving a confirmation code to get started. Skype for Android gets two way video chat for more phones

0

Skype has rolled out an update of its application that brings two way video calling feature to almost all new Gingerbread running devices. Last month, Skype had launched the feature for only few Android handsets.

Along with the enhanced compatibility for certified or tested Gingerbread running devices, with this update, the same application will also work with other devices but Skype does not guarantee perfect video quality for those devices.

The application will work both on WiFi and networks. However, devices older than Gingerbread will have to use the rear camera for video calling as Android itself does not allow the usage of the front video camera for video calling.

The list of newer compatible handsets presently available in India include Samsung Galaxy S II, Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC Desire, HTC Sensation, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire HD, HTC Flyer, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro.

Existing users can upgrade the application directly from the Android marketplace or can also follow the link for downloading the app on their device.
