Nokia C5-03 is most sought after: TMI survey

0

The constantly shifting taste of mobile phone consumers continued to be reflected in The Handset Hotlist survey (September 2011). Seven of the 25 phones that made it to the list of August &#151 including the iPhone &#151 have disappeared from the Hotlist this time round.

The Handset Hotlist, based on a survey of online preferences, is brought out by The Mobile Indian, and is released every month.

Sreekant Khandekar, director, The Mobile Indian, says, “Since the Hotlist was first released, only 16 models of mobile phones have managed to keep their place in the list, three months in running.”

Nokia C5-03 continued to be the most-searched mobile phone on The Mobile Indian for the third consecutive month, followed by Android-based Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830, which stood at No. 4 last month.

The surprise entry is Nokia C2-03, which features on the list for the first time, at No 3. A basic phone, priced at only Rs 4,500 with a S40 operating system, the Nokia C2-03 has a touchscreen and comes with a basic camera.

“Micromax A70, which has figured in the list each month, reaches No. 4, the highest so far. It has consistently been the most searched-for model among the Indian brands on the list,” says Khandekar.

Over the last three months, the number of models in the Handset Hotlist with a touch-based keypad has dropped from 17 to 11, while the total number of models with a Touch-Qwerty facility has grown from three to seven. Is this an aberration that will disappear, or does it signal the start of a new trend?

Khandekar adds, “Another possible surmise which can be deduced from the latest Top 25 Handset List is that consumers are now looking for mobile phones with smaller screens, and they would prefer a model with a Touch-Qwerty keypad to navigate the internet. Whether this reasoning is correct will become evident only a few months later.”

Top 10 Indian Challengers

The second edition of The Top 10 Indian Challengers also saw huge changes &#151 in fact, more significant than in the top 25 since half of the 10 models on it are appearing for the first time.

The Challengers’ list was introduced in the month of August and is a ranking of the 10 most exciting handsets from Indian marketers, based on the preferences of the visitors on the website.

Commenting on the new Challengers’ list, Khandekar says, “The idea of Top 10 Indian Challengers is to go beyond the dominant international names and capture the undercurrent of change in the Indian market. Some of these names could well be the leaders of tomorrow.”

In the Challenger list, Micromax bags the top two spots with its A-70 and X-560. Notably, seven handsets of Micromax features in the list. The other three spots were taken up by Spice Mobiles M-6700 Cappuccino (No. 3), iBall Aura V36 (No. 6) and Spice Mobiles M 6868 (No. 8).

Difference between the two lists

&#151 In the Challenger List, only four of the 10 Indian handsets are 3G-enabled; in the Handset Hotlist, 50 per cent phones are 3G-enabled.

&#151 In the Challenger List, visitors have shown a keen interest in WiFi functionality, as seven out of 10 handsets support it.

&#151 A good camera seems to be gaining popularity in the Challenger choice: five of the handsets have a of 3 MP, and two phones have 5 MP.

Both lists suggest that touchscreens are a must-have and the typical screen size, too, is roughly the same, at about three inches.

HTC purchasing an operating system

0

HTC is considering buying a mobile operating system for its smartphone business. Focus Taiwan News Channel reported that Cher Wang, chairman of HTC, stated that the company can use any it wants and that there is no rush. It is uncertain which operating system HTC would purchase and optimise by adding the HTC Sense custom user interface. Several bets are on HP’s Palm webOS.

Cher Wang, in an interview with Observer China, said, “We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse. We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform.”

This stands true to a larger extent as the company has provided several winning handsets that are designed smartly, pack good hardware and run on great software.

HTC will closely watch the development of two major operating systems &#151 Baidu OS and Aliyan OS. The company boasts of its ability to stand out amongst competitors with several devices running different operating systems and provide a nice user experience.
Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 would be an exception since the operating system does not allow the addition of a third party user interface.

Both Samsung and HTC are reported to have been planning to purchase HP’s Palm platform. Samsung already has its hands deep in Google Android, Windows Phone 7 and now Bada OS. On the other hand, it would be a good long term investment for HTC to buy webOS. At this moment, the company does not seem to be indulging in any sort of purchase but we can expect an announcement by early next year during the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, Spain.

Windows Live SkyDrive to offer unlimited document and photo storage

0

Windows Live SkyDrive, the cloud based storage service for Windows devices, seems to be following in the footsteps of Apple iCloud. After allowing SkyDrive to be synchronized to Windows Phone devices, SkyDrive became a single point sync tool for Windows Phone devices last year, and the introduction of Live Wave 3 increased storage space for the cloud service from 5 to 25 GB, and that much is available for SkyDrive users now as well.

Things are soon to take a positive turn for most SkyDrive users since with the upcoming SkyDrive, Wave 5 cloud storage will become absolutely free for saving Microsoft documents and pictures, which is somewhat similar to what Apple’s iCloud offers its users. So, as reported by liveside.net, the upcoming SkyDrive service will offer 25 GB of storage space for files that are not Microsoft Office documents or photographs. For these there will be unlimited space.

Along with that, SkyDrive has already reduced the limit on file size of the uploaded document from 100 to 50 MB. Nevertheless, with the inclusion of unlimited documents and photo support for SkyDrive Microsoft is looking to give some serious completion to both vendor based and third party cloud storage services.

After the roll out of this there is an expectation that Microsoft might also look into tapping other markets by providing SkyDrive support for and powered devices, but that will only come at a later stage.

As of now no final timeline for the roll out has been shared but it is expected that it will be sooner than anticipated, especially since Mango update is on the verge of release.

0

Motorola is expected to announce a mid-range Motorola Fire XT with Google 2.3 Gingerbread sometime this week. It was just yesterday we reported that another entry level handset Motorola Fire will also be announced officially. Both handsets are already available for purchases to online retail channels where approximate cost of Motorola Fire is Rs 9,200 and Motorola Fire XT is Rs 12,990.

The lucrative entry-level segment is slowly getting crowded with several Android based handsets being launched around the price of Rs 10,000 and these handsets are packed with good hardware. The Motorola Fire XT is the XT531 handset that was formally announced last month.

With mere 11.95mm thickness, the Fire XT handset houses as an 800MHz with 512MB and 512MB ROM. That’s decent enough hardware for mid-range device but the might be a hindrance.

Fire XT will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread update and may run the new Moto Switch user interface that allows switching between the previously set up modes. This handset will support Networks and also offers Wi-Fi as well as for wireless connectivity.

Featuring a 5 camera at the back, this handset also has a camera in the front for video calling. Other features of this handset include FM Radio with RDS, e-Compass, A-GPS, and 3.5mm audio port.

Intel atom processor to support Android

0

Tegra, Snapdragon, ARM have been in the domain for mobile devices for quite sometime now and same is the time Intel has been out of this domain, especially after having a low power processor like Atom in their product line up.

To capitalise on this opportunity Intel is looking at a customised gingerbread version optimised for Intel’s next generation series E6xx Atom processors.

With this custom build Android Gingerbread Intel is looking at giving various device manufacturers a solution to run Android on Intel powered devices as well.

The reason why Intel has been trailing in the mobile devices domain is due to the high power requirement of the Atom processors as compared to the other processors that are being used in different smartphone and tablet devices. And with the launch of this custom Android operating system Intel aims at achieving better battery optimisation and much needed efficiency for the Atom E series processors.

Intel has released a video also disclosing more details about this process and the future plan related to the E Series atom processor. In the video Intel has announced the launch date of the Android Gingerbread on Atom as January 2012.

Next Android version to be called Jelly Bean?

0

Next version of beyond Ice cream Sandwich, will be called Jelly Bean. Google has been naming different versions of Android with a deserts name in the alphabetical order.

Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread and now Ice cream sandwich has been the names of the different versions till now and the next turn is of ‘J’, so ‘jelly bean’ fits the bill.

But is it just a guess? Thisismynext.com quoting reliable sources has reported this is the name doing rounds inside Google for the next version. Though its still some time before the name will be finalised, however there aren’t many deserts starting with ‘j’ so its likely to be the name.

Meanwhile, Ice cream sandwich launch is round the corner, and it is one big upgrade which will combine the Smartphone and Tablet efforts of Google into one. Which will mean that the application developed for any of the two form factors will work on both.

Android app market gets new arcade games

0

Android at present seems to be becoming a home ground for the resurrection of classic games. As, a classic arcade shooter game, the ‘R-Type’ has made its way to the platform. And with the launch of this game the developer ‘DotEMU’ has tried to bring back the glory and the buzz this game created back in the 80’s.

In the past also we have seen quite a few classic titles coming to Android platform and sometime back Taito corporation announced the launch of the Space Invader game for Android.

Unlike other classic games that have evolve with time the R-Type brings back the same old game play in the new mobile version also. The developer has tried to recreate the experience and has kept the same game play as it offered back then.

With 8 different levels to complete and 3 different control options users can get longer times of game play with this arcade shooter game. If things seems too easy then users can take the difficulty up couple of notches with multiple difficulty settings as well.

The game is not a freeware or an advertisement supported application hence it comes with a price tag. The developer has kept the price of this game slightly on the higher side which will not be liked by many of the players. But with that the game comes with access to all the future upgrades and updates from the developer for this game.

The game is available for a price tag of Rs 192 from the android marketplace and can be installed on Android devices running android version 2.1 and above only. The game has been optimised for Sony Ericsson Xperia play..

The application is available on the android marketplace and can be downloaded on the device using the device’s application store or by visiting the following link as well.

0

Research in Motion is working on yet another variation of its BlackBerry Bold line up with model number 9790. It is based on its big brother Bold 9900 handset. With slightly smaller display, the Bold 9790 packs most features of the Bold 9900 like the touchscreen display and full keypad. BGR got hands on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 evaluation unit and claims that the handset would be released sometime this year.

This BlackBerry Bold model will also house a (Near-Field Communication) chip inside along with support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
