Top five budget music-phones for Aug, Sept

0

If you are looking for a decent mobile phone with good music capability, you really don’t need to spend a fortune. There are several budget phones available in India that not only offer basic phone functionality, but for music lovers they pack quite a punch. They are, in fact, capable of replacing your portable music player altogether.

Here are the top five phones we think offer the best mix of music, functionality and price:

Micromax M2

Micromax M2 is a music centric dual mobile phone. It has a 2 inch display that is capable of reproducing vibrant images and has a high of 240 x 320 pixels, which is great for viewing videos. There is also a 2 camera that does a pretty good job as well.

The phone’s sound output is SRS certified and the box carries a certificate to prove this. The phone speaks for its music quality with clear audio and volume. The sound output is balanced with clean bass (low frequency), mid (medium frequency) and hi (high frequency) sounds. This device also supports the most popular audio formats like and WMA.

M2 comes with a big headset along with a stereo handsfree kit. The is good in terms of quality and reproduces sounds well.

Bluetooth and are there for wireless connectivity. A big drawback of the device is that there is no provision for expanding memory, though the phone comes with 2 inbuilt, it might not be sufficient if you like carrying your entire music collection with you. The device is priced at Rs 3,000. You can check our detailed review of this phone here.

Sony Ericsson W8

Sony Ericsson’s Walkman series was quite popular when it first appeared in 2005, but sometime down the line Sony Ericsson abandoned the series because its feature phones were in general not doing well. Now with its series doing well, the company has re-introduced the series again and this time with Android operating system.

We cannot doubt Sony’s ability to make good music devices, but the phone has to be looked at in a holistic way, and this phone delivers on all counts. The device is similar to Xperia X10 Mini, and comes with a 3.0 inch touchscreen, and to maximise space utilisation Sony Ericsson has used a corner-based user interface on top of Android.

It packs a good music player, headset and technologies like TrackID which identify songs being played on FM, which you can listen to through a headset.

Other features are standard for Android phones and include 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, Google suite, expandable memory up to 32 GB etc. The phone is priced at Rs 10,000 and makes for a great buy for music lovers.

The only drawback of the Sony Ericsson W8 is that it employs an aging Android 2.1. However, with other Mini devices being upgraded to Android 2.3, this one is also likely to get the update soon. You can also check out the special 100 per cent money back offer from RCom if you are planning to buy this phone.

Nokia X2

Nokia X series phones are multimedia devices. Depending on your budget you can choose from the range and all the devices have good music capabilities. However, we will focus on the X2. It comes in a bar design and is based on Nokia’s S40 operating system.

The phone supports Ovi Music store, which means you have access to a huge music library. In terms of hardware, you can’t fault Nokia, so right from the build quality of the handset to the handsfree kit, everything is tip top. The sound output from the stereo speakers of the phone is also good.

The Nokia X2 is light weight at 82 grams and the bar design means it is very pocketable. The phone supports most popular music formats, which means that you won’t have to worry about the type of music you download.

The phone is very feature rich for its price, with a 5 megapixel camera and LED flash. It supports and Bluetooth networks; and its memory can be expanded to 16 GB. At Rs 4,400 the X2 is good value for money, apart from being a good music player.

Samsung Hero 3213

This phone is one of the cheapest devices in the country. And the reason it makes it to this list is because it also has good music capabilities that include FM with music recording, stereo speakers, support for most popular music formats and a decent pair of ear phones.

The X2 is extremely feature rich, though design-wise it looks very mundane, but it houses a front facing camera for video calling, 3G for fast connectivity, a TV out port and memory expandable to 8 GB.

Don’t buy this phone for its rear camera as it is only of quality, but other than that the device is well worth the Rs 3,400 it costs.

Lava M30

This is another dual SIM music phone. It is an SRS WoW certified device, and this means that the surround sound quality is really good. The music is powered by Yamaha, which is one of the best-known names in the professional audio industry.

Apart from that you get a dual headset socket so that you and your partner can listen to music together without annoying each other. You can control music both through the headsets and using the dedicated music keys on the phone.

The display is also good as it utilises IPS (in plane switching) technology which makes the screen easy to view in bright light and from wide viewing angles.

Other features of the phone include a 2.2 inch screen, a 2 megapixel camera, expandable memory up to 8 GB, GPRS, Bluetooth, and connectivity. The phone is priced at Rs 3,000 which makes it a good value for money device.

Verdict

These phones are not in the list in any order. All of them are very different phones and depending on the users’ preference and budget all of them offer good value for money and an enjoyable music experience. If you have money you should go for the Sony Ericsson W8 as it has all the features of an Android phone and in addition it has superior music capabilities.

If you are only looking for a music phone, and basic phone functions like calling and messaging, you can choose between Micromax M2 and Lava M30.

Samsung and Nokia might be preferable for people who want a complete phone with good music, but within their budget.

CoolPad to launch a 5 inch Android CDMA phone in November

0

CoolPad, which recently launched a CDMA phone through Reliance Communications, plans to launch a 5 inch CDMA-GSM dual mode Android phone which is said to be something in between a tablet and a smartphone.

Talking to The Mobile Indian, Sami Al Lawati, managing director of CoolPad Communications, said, “We want to launch our 5 inch Android smartphone in the Indian market as we see a lot of potential for CDMA smartphones for people who are data hungry and have experienced CDMA data cards before and now want to use them on their smartphone.”

He said, “The phone will be a high end product, which will rival the likes of LG and Samsung in terms of quality, performance and features. We are looking at the Rs 25,000-price bracket for this phone.”

The phone, codenamed CoolPad 9930, is aimed at both the 7 inch-tablet and the 4+ inch-smartphone market. Dell had also tried a similar product with Dell Streak 5 but the device did not do as well as expected. The odds against CoolPad’s potential for success are that the CDMA business is already struggling in India, and that the brand is relatively unknown.

The smartphone definitely fills a void in CDMA operator Reliance’s product portfolio as there are very few CDMA smartphones available in the country and none at this price.

The company claims that the new smartphone’s 5 inch, 16:9 full-view ASV (advanced super view technology developed by Sharp) screen delivers a control and visual experience not inferior to Apple’s products. The phone will be run on Android 2.3 and will have quad support and other Android regulars like WiFi, Bluetooth, and Google’s software suite with products like Google Maps, Gmail, Android Market etc.

What is still not known is which the phone uses, and since performance ultimately depends on the processor, we will wait and watch for the device to be launched.

Fly to launch 4 inch touchscreen phone

0

Fly Mobile has very aggressive plans for this festive season and they will launch very powerful feature phones by the end of this month. Among them include a 4 inch touchscreen phone, with ARM 9 based chipset, which also features in some of the smartphones.

Talking to The Mobile Indian, Mandeep Chaggar, group product manager, Fly Mobile, said, “We are going to launch three touchscreen phones by the end of this month with 4.0 inch, 3.2 inch and 2.8 inch screen size. We will be using an advanced version of resistive touch technology which will require very little pressure to be applied; this will help us improve the user experience without increasing the price.”

Fly Mobile has a tie-up with N-Star, which makes chipsets based on ARM 9 and above, and according to Chaggar these chips will be utilised for Fly’s future products as well.

The 4 inch display bearing phone with a price tag of Rs 3,990, will be the largest touchscreen feature phone in the country. It will also feature a 2.0 camera. Other specifications of the phone are not known. Given the trend we expect it have WiFi and apart from EDGE/GPRS connectivity (only the 4 inch version could have EDGE).

Other two handsets with 2.8 inch and 3.2 inch model will carry a price tag of Rs 1,990 and Rs 2,990 respectively. Both these phones will have N-Star chipset.

All the three mobile phones will have the Nucleus operating system, which is also used by the likes of Motorola, Samsung and LG for some of their feature phones.

Google working on a social news magazine app

0

Google is working on a new social news magazine which will be available on iPad and devices. The news has come from Robert Scoble, a digital expert and blogger, who posted it on Google+.

He says, “I heard from someone working with Google that Google is working on a Flipboard competitor for both Android and iPad. My source says that the versions he’s seen so far are mind-blowing good. It sure sounds like Google is storing up quite a few social announcements. I wonder if they are waiting for Facebook to make its announcements next week and then will open the door to a raft of new things? I hope so.”

There are no official comments from Google. The name of the app was disclosed by AllThingsD, it’s called Propeller. The product seems to be competing with Flipboard, an application which is designed to gather information from different social networks and then present it in a magazine format on the iPad. Flipboard was named app of the year by Apple in 2010 and Time magazine placed it in the list of top 50 innovations.

The Google app is likely to use content feeds from different sources such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and RSS feeds from websites across the world. Propeller can also potentially be monetized since Flipboard recently started running paid advertisements.

Modi following Anna’s footstep: uses missed call to connect

0

Taking a cue from Anna Hazare, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has opted for the “missed call’ route to connect with the masses as he started his three-day Sadbhavana fast in Ahmedabad last week.

To get alerts about Sadbhavana mission, mobile users need to give a missed call to 022-61550770 (Toll Free) and get regular updates about the mission.

After giving the missed call, a user will get a welcome message, “A warm welcome to Sadbhavana Mission, an initiative of Shri Narendra Modi to strengthen peace, unity and harmony. You will receive regular updates from us.”

Narendra Modi has also tweeted “Glad to see overwhelming solidarity for #Sadhabavana Mission. People also joining in large nos. thru’ missed call on 022-61550770 (toll-free).”

Through his website (www.narendramodi.in) Modi has also ensured that people can even download ringtones for their mobile. As of now mobile users can download from a list of 5 ringtones.

Also if a mobile user wants to subscribe to Narendra Modi’s Facebook status updates via SMS, they can do so but they must activate their phone for Facebook Mobile.

Sometime back, when veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign – India Against Corruption – was launched, his supporters had come out with a unique way to tap the support of mobile users, where anyone who wants to lend support to Anna Hazare’s campaign just needed to place a miss call to +912261550789 to stand against corruption.

Same method was also used by Baba Ramdev’s supporters to garner support for fight against corruption.
