Transcend launches Class 10 microSDHC cards

0

Transcend has launched its new speedy Class 10 microSDHC cards with better data transfer speed capability.

Class 10 is currently the best speed rating available for an SD card, hitting the maximum transfer rate of 20 MB/second on devices supporting SD 3.0.

Class 10 is the speed classification of cards and refers to its capability of data transfer speed of up to 20 MB/second for Full video recording and HD still consecutive recording.

These days even stills (photos) taken with a DSLRs(high end cameras) require better transfer speed as a single shot taken from a 20 camera is at times more than 10MB and thus can be slowed down by a lower class memory card.

This new card is available in capacity of up to 16GB, and will suit the requirements of high-end mobile devices such as smartphones, latest digital cameras, driving recorders, and tablet PCs. Strangely there is no 32GB option right now.

The 16GB microSDHC cards can store up to 6552 pictures (based on 5 megapixel JPEG compression format), over 88 hours of standard quality video (MPEG-4 video at 384 Kbps), or 240 minutes of HD video (AVCHD at 9 Mbps).

The new Class 10 microSDHC memory cards come with a microSDHC card adapter so that it fits in SDHC slot as well, such as in the digital cameras that have an SDHC slot.

All Transcend’s SDHC and microSDHC cards are supplied with a limited lifetime warranty. The Class 10 microSDHC card is offered in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities, with price of Rs 800 for the 4GB model, Rs 1300 for the 8GB model and Rs 3800 for the 16GB model.

Interestingly, Tata Docomo provides moving images and vibration effects in sync with actions in the comic.

The comic service costs subscribers Rs 15 per chapter and does not entail any data charges within home network locations. Service charges are on the high side as users are charged on a per chapter basis rather than on consumption period. Docomics has also added Marvel Comics to its fold.

The app has titles from Marvel, and about 150 other publishers that include some free issues as well. Users can also enjoy comics on a web based app or a desktop client through a Graphic.ly account.

There is cross platform support as well, which means comics bought on mobile apps will also be available through the web based app and on the desktop client.

Users should make sure they read the instructions; otherwise even simple things such as zooming in to read text might appear difficult.

The app is available on Android Market free of cost (they charge for the comics, of course). It works on all devices that run Android 2.1 or better.

Graphic.ly is an integrated reader which acts as a storefront too so you can buy and download your favourite comics on it.

The Android version of Graphic.ly will have to compete with Comixology (another Android-based comic app), which too provides apps on comics.

Keep track of your kids’ SMS activity with WebWatcher app

0

A computer monitoring service for parents called WebWatcher has been launched by Awareness Technologies for devices.

Parents can use this to keep track of all the SMSs being sent to and from their kids’ Android phones. The WebWatcher app is already available for BlackBerry phones and the company also plans to release an iPhone version soon.

“We’ve created a simple way for parents to stay informed about who their children are interacting with via text messages and what they’re communicating to ensure they aren’t victims of cyber bullying or involved in inappropriate behaviour like sexting,” said Brad Miller, chief executive officer and chairman of Awareness Technologies.

The WebWatcher app can be installed easily and many children’s activities can be accessed through one WebWatcher online interface.

The app uses keystroke logging technology which sends an email to parents whenever the app comes across any alarming words.

In terms of parental control technology, WebWatcher is the leading program in the market.

Test Drive Amazon apps on your browser before buying

0

Test Drive is a phrase that makes you think of vehicles. Now, even device owners can try their hand at various applications before they pay for it, thanks to the new Test Drive feature introduced on Amazon AppStore.

Users can run apps in a simulator in the with the help of their mouse. All they have to do after selecting the is to click on the ‘Test Drive Now’ button.

On other platforms, users can download a trial version of the app, which involves data charges. This is not the case on Amazon AppStore.

Test Drive is an innovative approach used by Amazon AppStore to sell apps. It is currently offered only to USA based users.

Customers are allowed to Test Drive the full version of an app for 30 minutes, after which they have to decide whether they want to buy it.

Currently, only 20 different apps provide the Test Drive facility, and the company intends to introduce this feature for other apps soon.

Android AppStore has been lagging behind Apple in the application approval process and in terms of total number of apps. Now Amazon AppStore has come out with Test Drive, but still has to prove it is ahead of Android’s open market approach which lets the market decide how good an app is.

However, Google is not comfortable with dealing in license issues, whereas Amazon is completely at home with it. There is an outside chance that due to competitive pressure even Apple may be driven to offer a similar feature to users.

But we have to remember, Apple has rarely followed its competitors; it follows its own heart in the market. In the end, more than being a competitor, Amazon AppStore may end up benefiting Google and its Android platform.

0

The number of mobile users, who pay a monthly subscription fee to access music on their devices, will reach 178 million by 2015, according to a research.

“While streaming is the buzz word in developed markets, we should not forget that it is in markets where a combination of a large population, rising mobile subscriber penetration, and developing economies that represent a golden opportunity for mobile music services. Subscription models offer affordable access to large catalogues of music, and a regular income for mobile operators such as China Mobile and Bharti airtel,” says Daniel Ashdown, the writer of Mobile Music Opportunities report for Juniper.

Value added services, such as the music subscription, are likely to increase in India as well especially with the advent of mobile technology in India.

A lot of content providers like Nokia Ovi music and Hungama mobile are currently offering specialised content for mobile phones and are also acting as the key resources behind the increase in awareness and demand for mobile content in India.

Various service providers such as Spice digital have also tied up with music content providers such as Phonographic Performance Limited to provide exclusive content to the people.

Nokia X7-00 soon

0

Despite its rhetoric to do away with Symbian, Nokia is all set to introduce a range of new devices on the platform.

According to Symbiantweet.com, which accessed information accidentally revealed by Nokia, a new Symbian S60 ^3 device might come in the form of Nokia X7-00 smartphone, the successor of the Nokia X6-00 launched in India sometime back .

The Finnish handset maker is also, as per the leaked information, is coming up with handsets under a new series (T). You can click here for more information on the same.

X7 is the successor of Nokia’s X6 handset.

According to another website (gsmarena.com), the X7 will be a full capacitive touchscreen based smartphone but with a bigger four inch having not less than 360 x 640 pixels. It is also expected to feature the scratch resistant gorilla glass.

For computing punch it will have a smaller 635 with a dedicated Graphics Processing Unite (GPU) along with a 450MB and 256MB ROM.

Falling in the mid ranged Symbian smartphone, the X7 is expected to be priced below the Rs 25,000 price bracket in India.

With Samsung launching the Galaxy S and announcing the launch of the Nexus S, Nokia is expected to launch this four inch screener sooner than expected, maybe by the end of the second quarter or beginning of the third quarter in 2011.

But as compared to the two other four inch screen smartphones unveiled by Samsung, the X7 will have a definite with an eight camera with an LED flash.

Google to make Nexus Tablet

0

After the Nexus One and Nexus S smartphones, Google is reportedly looking to create an Nexus tablet.

According to information picked up by Russian blog site Mobile-Review, Google is looking to create an Android Nexus tablet and LG is said to be handling the actual manufacturing (Google English Translation).

Google’s Nexus One and Nexus S smartphones have native Android operating systems without any modifications or adition, which usually third part manufacturers do.

And, it seems that Google is trying the same model with Tablet, whereas it will manufacture a tablet device with native Android 3.0 Honeycomb in place.

The new tablet would most likely run a clean version of Android 3.0 Honeycomb and could hit the market by mid-summer or early fall, said Mobile-Review.

However, there are certain people who think that this device could not be meant for end consumers and Google is manufacturing it to test the Android platform developments.

However going by the history, Goggle first got Nexus one manufactured by HTCand then recently introduced Nexus S manufactured by Samsung. This could very well be the next big device from Google.

Amazon eyes No 1 spot in Android ecosystem

0

Amazon’s game plan is becoming clearer now. It already comes armed with a store which is giving Apple a good competition. And with the recent launch of Cloud Drive and Cloud Player, it is now stepping up the heat.

It is in fact, beginning to compete directly with the Market itself, gradually phasing it out in the process.

Amazon is providing more features to the users than the Android Market does. Take the Test Drive for example, which allows users to actually use the on a simulator on their computer browser. This shows how good Amazon is with actually selling a product to the consumers.

The process of Android domination by Amazon began when it launched the Kindle app. Although the same app was introduced on all the other platforms, Amazon had kept Android in the center. As the Android platform grew in size, the book sales from Kindle also jumped. Needless to say, Amazon used the retail opportunity provided by Android really well.

The gradual progress of the Amazon bouquet of services grew with Amazon AppStore. Amazon also brought its typical promotions along, including the ‘free app of the day’ which is more popular than the original Android Market.

The Amazon march continued with the launch of Amazon cloud player. So whatever the users choose to do, they can do it with Amazon be it books, music or apps. Add the integration of app store with the platform itself, and the possibility that Amazon may be working on its own tablet, the Amazon game plan suddenly begins to look formidable.

That doesn’t mean that there are no holes in the Amazon plan. While installing the Android AppStore, Android users have to disable the security setting on Android tablet. It also means the users can install any other app store on the device too. Amazon needs to work on the security feature to assure users that they can continue to use the Amazon services safely in the future.

Windows Phone to be world No 2 by 2015: IDC

0

The operating system is all set to be the leading mobile operating system this year itself, whereas the Nokia Microsoft deal may help Windows Phone to become the world number two mobile operating system by 2015, according to the International Data Corporation.

“Android is poised to take over as the leading smartphone operating system in 2011 after racing into the number 2 position in 2010,” said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team.

“For the vendors who made Android the cornerstone of their smartphone strategies, 2010 was the coming-out party. This year will see a coronation party as these same vendors broaden and deepen their portfolios to reach more customers, particularly first-time smartphone users,” Llamas added.

Android is likely to stay at the top spot whereas the Symbian market share will reduce to 0.2 per cent in 2015. The number two position will be captured by Windows Phone and its market share will be at 20.9 per cent, IDC has predicted.

Many technology bloggers have not taken kindly to the report, as they just cannot fathom how Windows Phone 7 may go on to become number two.

The IDC data suggests it has simply added the numbers of Symbian and Windows Phone platforms, assuming that Symbian users will migrate to the Windows platform.
