RockMelt browser’s iPhone version arrives

0

RockMelt, a social networking browser, has launched its iPhone version which synchronises the desktop with the mobile one, including the Facebook and Twitter management tools. The bookmarking option has been reworked by the RockMelt mobile team and is renamed as ‘Read Later’.

All the usual social networking activities, such as retweeting and wall postings, geotagging, opening links quickly, and adding photos, can be easily done through the RockMelt mobile browser. However the iPhone version would not feature private and tabbed browsing options, which are available in its desktop versions.

The synchronisation with the mobile device happens automatically, a feature which is different from other browsers where users have to request such features.

The application, which is likely to arrive within a week, hasn’t been approved by the Apple yet.

Other operating system versions of RockMelt, including Android, are likely to arrive soon.
The mobile version of RockMelt is more likely to be liked by those users who find it difficult to navigate their way through a browser.

When the RockMelt startup was launched, it came with an attempt to refresh the web browsing experience. Both the mobile and desktop versions of the browser allow users to follow certain Twitter and Facebook posts, and even the links can be followed without typing in the web address, though the option to type web addresses is there.

Probably RockMelt believes mobile users do not have much time to type in the web address to visit websites and that they just follow some websites and blogs within a short interval of time.

In a nutshell, the RockMelt attempt is ambitious and it wants to be the mobile homescreen for the users.

G’Five to launch Android tablet

0

G’Five, a Chinese mobile handset maker, is planning to launch an based tablet PC in India within the next one month.

The tablet will be a 7 inch capacitive touchscreen device based on Android 2.1. The choice of Android 2.1 is surprising as version 2.2 is already available in a wide variety of phones, including handsets from Indian brands such as Micromax and Spice.

Other hardware details were not disclosed. However, we expect the device to run on VIA processors, with a rating of 600 or more.

Jaideep Chopra, vice president, G’Five, says, “We are ready with the product; we are just waiting for the right time to introduce the device. The pricing will be competitive with what is available in the market.”

Given the fact that the tablet will be based on an older version of Android, we are expecting it to be priced below Rs 15,000 as competitors such as Olive Telecom have got devices with the latest version of Android currently selling at Rs 19,000. HCL too has entered the market with its own tablet starting at Rs 14,900.

Meanwhile, G’Five has opened 10 exclusive stores under the brand name of Mobispot. G’Five, which according to the IDC is the third largest handset player in India, is planning to launch 500 such stores across the country, including 20 in Delhi.

About Mobispot, Chopra said, “We will be launching 500 Mobispot stores across the country. We will focus not just on tier two and tier three but also metro cities with 20 stores in Delhi alone. These stores will sell only G’Five products including our lineup of mobile phones, tablets and laptops.”

Galaxy S Gingerbread update arrives in Europe, not India

0

Samsung has started delivering Gingerbread (Android 2.3) to Galaxy S devices starting from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), followed by the UK and other European countries.

In India, which is poised to be the biggest market for Samsung (according to some reports), users will have to wait at least till the end of May or early June for this update.

Samsung’s spokesperson have confirmed this by saying that the update will be available earliest by the end of May, but that it is more likely to arrive in June.

Currently, Galaxy S runs on 2.2 Froyo, which is getting upgraded to the latest version of Android for smartphones. This update is delivered over the air, meaning that you just need to connect your phone to your PC and get the update through the internet.
Therefore, the delay is surprising.

Without this update, you are missing:

New keyboard

This new virtual keyboard has its keys reshaped for faster input, and the software brings up word suggestions depending on the letters you type.

Other new features are multi-touch keyboard to type numbers and symbols with shortcuts instead of having to flip between numerical and alphabet keyboards like you’ve got to now. This new keyboard also has PlayStation controls.

Copy/paste

The copy and paste function has been improved and you can now select words by just pressing and holding keys, and then selecting and copying text for pasting later.

Power management

Another improvement is your ability to manage power consumption. Inside your application settings you’re able to see your battery and how it’s being used by various apps.

Application control

Along these lines is a shortcut to “Manage Applications”, which you can reach from your options menu. From here, you can indeed view all your applications, see how much power they’re using, and you’ve got the ability to stop any instantly.

NFC (Near Field Communication)

This is the future of commerce, and particularly of credit cards. Use this to touch or swipe posters, advertisements etc. that are embedded with tags, and you will be directed to a website. This functionality won’t work in India though as we don’t have the other systems that are needed.

Internet calling

SIP internet calling addresses can be added to your contacts list and you can make internet calls via Quick Contact or Dialler. Of course, you’ll need a SIP account for this to work and these features will be turned off or on depending on what your manufacturer or carrier wants.

Again, this will not work in India as the service is not legally allowed.

Downloads management

A new download manager is in place to work from your browser, email, or other apps.

Camera

Multiple cameras can now be accessed from one new camera app just by clicking the “Select Camera” button.

Google gaining from Apple’s growth

0

The iPhone’s growth is benefitting Android, the president of Google Asia Pacific, Daniel Alegre recently said, contradicting the popular perception that and platforms are in fierce battle.

“Whenever iPhone succeeds, Google succeeds. I actually don’t look at it as iPhone versus Android. iPhone is a very strong driver of query growth for Google. We also monetize apps through the iPhone. We actually benefit from iPhone’s growth,” Alegre was quoted by AdNews as saying.

Alegre added, “We truly believe there have to be as few platforms as possible in order for apps developers to focus their development.”

According to him, Android operating system is seeing 300,000 activations per day.

Alegre’s statement makes sense as Google apps are being used more on iOS devices though they do not come preloaded on them.

On the other hand, Apple doesn’t benefit in the same way and may end up getting Google’s rivals, including Bing from Microsoft, on its platform.

Apple has also bought Poly9, a mapping company, indicating its desire to counter Google’s products.
