Top Twitter apps for Android

0

When the operating system was launched, there were not many Twitter apps. And the apps which were available initially fell far short of users’ experience.

The situation has changed since then.

For starters, Android is the number 1 operating system in the world today, while Twitter is one of the most preferred social networking site with billions of users around the world including celebrities.

Here are some Android Twitter apps which allow users to stay connected with their friends all the time.

Twidroyd, as the name suggests, is a Twitter application for Android devices. It has both free and paid version. Twidroyd can be used on all Android devices running on version 1.5 and higher. All the standard features expected in a Twitter client are there. It comes with a nice user interface and smooth scrolling as well.

TweetCaster, another such application, has a cool nice blue user interface. The important Twitter tabs are placed on the top, so navigation won’t be much of a problem in its case. It has a popular functionality called ‘Zip It’, in which annoying Twitter messages can be stopped without even unfollowing the other users. Users can also post their messages to both Twitter and Facebook, which is great if the users are equally active on both.

Seesmic is another popular Twitter client for Android. Apart from the Twitter feed it features, users post their Twitter and Facebook messages with just one click. Those who are there on Google Buzz can also do so using this application.

The TweetDeck app, however, is perceived to be more suitable for other operating systems. TweetDeck has a nice user interface, which is also modern at the same time. The background is dark with light text at the top. It has a popular desktop client as well, which means users will never be far from it, whatever device they are using.

They now need mobile internet to be fully productive. It is our duty to support the Indian government in making the country internet literate and remove the digital divide.”

Modi further said, “We will be focusing on devices running on (operating system) and supported by from Media Tek.”

He further elaborated Spice’s plans to offer affordable Android devices to Indian consumers to surf the net. At present, around 27 per cent of total mobile users in India use the internet on their handsets and by 2015, the figures will have swollen to around 75 per cent.

However, this will happen only if mobile users have access to affordable internet-ready handsets.

On prices, Modi said, “We will launch devices in the range of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 so that people from different strata of society can buy them.”

Currently, Spice has two Android phones, Spice Mi-300 and Spice Mi-310.

Motorola eying tablet alternatives with lapdock?

0

Motorola is planning to bring more Atrix-laptop doc like device in future, which could be available to the users as an alternative for tablets and especially iPads.

“In the ecosystem, there is a need for us to differentiate. Atrix devices with the Webtop and lap-dock we really think there is an alternative way of viewing the convergence between mobility and computing. And we will continue to focus on that,” says the Motorola chief executive officer Sanjay Jha.

One more idea being pursued by the company is to allow the phone to access a quad core in the lapdock so it can perform better. It’s not that the laptop is going to be dead, but some interesting and creative variations are definitely taking shape.

The Motorola Atrix is the first such smartphone to come with an accessory like laptop dock that turns the device into a netbook. But it did not perform well as users felt the price was too high for an accessory for the phone.

Other problems with the lapdock were its choice of operating system.

However, there are some positive aspects of the lapdock as well. It has a full laptop and not a mobile one. Two ports are there as well, so users could connect external keyboard and mouse.

We all knew Nokia phones were sturdy, but this sturdy?

0

Nokia phones, especially the feature phones of yesteryears, were known for their sturdy build quality and long battery life. And perhaps for this reason that it used to command 70 per cent market share couple of years back.

Most of us, who have at some point owned a Nokia phone, have our own stories of how it survived after we dropped it or it got washed in the washing machine hiding in our pants pocket and so on.

But the stories that we are taking about is much worse and even Nokia never anticipated that its phones will survive in such situations.

The first story is about Karin, who lost her Nokia 3110 Classic about a year ago. A year later, her daughter found the phone buried in the flowerbed. Initially Karin didn’t think her phone would work. Then her sister suggested the phone “has to work because it’s a Nokia”.

One battery charge and the 3110 Classic sprang sharply back to life!

Another story is about a year older. A Nokia 1600 phone, belonging to one Andrew Cheatle, fell near a sea shore. He was resigned to the fact that it had been swept away and lost in the big blue sea.

However, a week later it was discovered in the stomach of a sizable cod (fish) by a fisherman Glen Kerley, who returned it to Cheatle. To his amazement, the phone after some cleaning worked perfectly fine!

Though Andrew had to change the circuit board but the handset was still able to make calls, which is a great handset survival story.

This is a story from India, of a farmer who had to extract his phone from a pile of buffalo dung. The phone, having previously been eaten by a buffalo, went missing for a few days after falling out of the farmer’s shirt pocket. What is surprising is that the phone was ringing while inside buffalo’s tummy!

Around same time as the buffalo and fish story, another Nokia phone, this time a Nokia 6800, was found inside a pack of potato chips! Though it could not be switched on immediately, the phone was very much intact (may be battery would have drained out completely).

These stories found on the Nokia’s official blogs, are just a few examples. These are so many stories listed in the comments section on the blog. We would be happy if we can have our own examples from India in our comments space, it could be about any phone any company.

Windows Phone 7’s problems with Nodo update continue

0

In yet another setback for Windows Phone 7, Microsoft has stopped sending Nodo updates to some of Samsung’s phones. The Nodo update was released in March and has features such as copy-paste and marketplace search.

The trouble experienced by Microsoft in sending mobile updates is slightly surprising. The problem, however, is occurring only with one or two handsets.

One Microsoft employee, Michael Stroh, said on the official blog, “Yes, we’ve temporarily stopped sending updates to (Samsung) Omnia7s. The team discovered a technical issue with the update package for this model. The work of fixing and testing the package is nearly done, and the team hopes to resume update deliveries soon.”

Right from the outset, Samsung Omnia has been a problem for the Windows Phone 7 team. A large number of customers are receiving their updates on time, but the hiccup with Omnia and Samsung Focus has not been solved as yet. Samsung Omnia is available in India so some Indian users would also be affected by the problem.

This is not the only thing bothering users though. The company has been posting regularly on a blog about the current status of the updates, but information regarding which phones won’t be receiving updates has not been forthcoming.

Mobile phones to replace tickets by 2015: Research

0

Mobile phones are set to replace physical travel tickets in most European countries and other major parts of the world by as early as 2015, says Juniper Research. This would be made possible by Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

NFC allows users to make transactions that include monetary exchanges. It is a short distance wireless communication technology that requires no physical connection between devices.

“Whether by expansion of and bar code delivery or by NFC, at Juniper we see convenience and choice for users as key advantages of mobile ticketing. It will be 2013 before large numbers of enabled devices are in peoples’ pockets,” said the author of the report, Howard Wilcox.

Classic examples of NFC technology are Delhi Metro’s access card used by passengers, or even office access cards.

The possibilities of NFC are endless and it can be deployed in telecommunication, payments, identity tracking and many other areas.

Currently, NFC payment system is in use only in some countries such as Japan, but its popularity is expected to grow even in countries like India where bar codes and SMS modes of payment are still in use owing to the bigger security risks associated with NFC payments.

OnSwipe proposes browsers that work like apps

0

OnSwipe, an internet startup, has big plans for the mobile web. Its plans would allow users to consume content through their mobile just as they do through applications.

Users are currently required to download applications for almost every function on their mobile phones. What OnSwipe wants to do is to change this and create a way in which users need not download apps anymore &#151 the browser will enable them to do all they can with apps.

With browser based navigation, which would have an app-like feel, readers will be able to swipe from one page to another and save pages so that they may be read later.

According to OnSwipe, even existing content would seamlessly transform into the new format without the publishers having to bear any extra costs.

The presence of location-based features means that there would be location-based advertisers also, indicating a lucrative business proposition.

For publishers, this means they can avoid the application model and create HTML5 websites, which would give an like feel to web content.

Publishing an app is difficult for content creators as they are also required to optimise their content for more than one operating system.

HTML5 is the standard language for publishing content on the internet, across all devices. For users, websites appear more magazine-like, just like apps currently appear.

OnSwipe provides a social sharing tool which allows users to bookmark the sites they want to visit time and again, and see what their friends are reading. The company intends to make money through the advertising sold on such websites.

Publishers are expected to welcome the platform because they would have to design one site and it would work across all the software platforms.
