Google Maps now available on mobile browser

0

Google has launched its maps service for and devices which can be accessed even without installing the application.

Google Maps is by far one of the most used maps and location services used across the world as it is available free of cost across various platforms.

Users of Android and iOS devices can now simply access the Google Maps from their mobile browsers just the way they access Google Maps on their computers and notebooks. With this, user will get more functionality and results with lesser amounts of efforts.

A simple area search in the Google search will help them in location search as well. So while searching for a restaurant nearby, along with the address and the contact details, users now can also get the direction to travel to that place with turn by turn directions.

The Mobile version of the Google Maps has all the features that come in its application version. The idea behind providing Google Maps through the mobile browser is that it allows faster upgradation and can be linked to several others services like the Google search and places, further improving user experience.

It can be accessed directly by simply visiting www.google.com from the smartphone’s browser.

Firefox 5.0 beta for Android

0

Nobody was willing to admit it, but the facility of private browsing found so many real world takers that almost every in the market had to provide it. Latest in the list is Firefox 5.0 beta for which has a ‘Do Not Track’ feature as well. This means that your movements on the net cannot be tracked if you’re using the new Firefox.

It is an update that arrived about a month after the official Firefox browser for Android was released by Mozilla. Users just need to go to the settings of the browser and click the option “Tell sites not to track me”. This is probably the first browser on the small screen to offer this feature.

People who are used to the desktop browser find mobile browsers slightly lacking, but Mozilla continues to make efforts to bring the mobile browser up to the standard of desktop browsing. Firefox 5.0 beta for Android increases the page loading time on networks. Firefox 5.0 beta browser on mobiles is easier due to the easy synchronization between the desktop and mobile versions of the browser, and the mobile version supports the add ons too.

The lack of support for Flash, however, is surprising since unlike on there are no restrictions on playing Flash videos in the browser. Firefox for mobile was launched as Fennec and it started as a bloated piece of software which has gradually improved into one of the better browsers that Android has today.

Nokia announces two dual SIM phones

0

Nokia has launched two dual phones, Nokia X1-01 and Nokia C2-00. Both the phones remember the settings for up to five different SIM cards.

The phones offer dual SIM and dual-standby, means you can always receive notification of calls and messages on each account — rather than having to switch your SIM cards on and off.
Both devices are no-nonsense, inexpensive phones that offer long battery life of up to 43 days and 13 hours on the Nokia X1-01 or 36 hours if you choose to play music.
The Nokia C2-00, claims to offers 19.2 days standby time, with 5.75 hours talk time.

Nokia X1-01

The Nokia X1-01 is a music centric device with a big speaker on the back, which according to the company is the loudest and clearest speaker they have ever produced.

So is Nokia targeting the likes of Karbonn Boom-Box? It’s anybody’s guess.

The device offers support for up to 16GB of storage using the card. It offers an FM radio, an music player with dedicated music keys, 3.5mm jack (so you can connect any speaker), a Torch. In addition to remembering the settings for up to five separate SIM cards, the Nokia X1-01 also lets you give each SIM its own logo, music signature or ringtone.

Nokia C2-00

One of the most unique features of C2-00 is its SIM card placement, offering Easy Swap. One SIM card is stored internally, like a traditional phone. The second card is easily accessible through a slot in the side — so you don’t have to open or even switch the phone off to change SIMs.

This is especially useful for people who want to use more than two SIMs, such as if the phone was to be shared between different members of a family, a group of friends or various community members, for example.

While the Nokia X1-01 runs the Series 30 operating system, the Nokia C2-00 runs Series 40, which offers some key advantages in the form of internet access, a web and Nokia for email.

The Nokia C2-00 also sports a camera and allows for MMS messaging. There’s support for up to 32GB of storage using an SD card, allowing users to carry thousands of photos, videos and music files.

The two phones will be offered with Ovi Life Tools, which offers news, market prices, entertainment, health advice and education services to people who are likely to find it difficult to get these things in other ways.

The Nokia X1-01 and Nokia C2-00 will start shipping within this quarter (ending June), with approximate price of Rs 2,300 and Rs 3,000 respectively.

New chip to give feature phones smartphone like powers

0

Feature phones have many features, but so far they have lacked processing powers. Spreadtrum Communications, a semiconductor company based out of China, has claimed that it has developed a new chip set that will address this problem.

The chip set based on ARM9 will offer JAVA, Internet access, navigation, high-definition video player, a 5 camera, 3D and Flash user interface and more in feature phones.

This high performance multimedia mobile phone solution, called as the SC6800H, will provide processing power that is currently found in entry level smartphones.

The company claims that this product, which features enhanced application and multimedia processing capabilities, is designed to meet customers’ growing demand for video, photo, music, games and other entertainment requirements within the mid-end multimedia mobile phone market.

The SC6800H is more than twice as fast as ARM7 based chips. Its ARM9EJ-S core with multimedia and engine would provide an enhanced user experience in a mid-end feature phone.

It would enable HVGA (640 x 240) screen with a fashionable user interface, such as the 3D and Flash UI, further improving the user experience.

In terms of communication, the SC6800H integrates multi-SIM card engine and controller, which enable dual standby, triple SIM standby and Quad SIM standby solutions, in a set of baseband and RF chipset.

Furthermore, the SC6800H provides interfaces for a number of mainstream peripheral components such as WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and TV.

Leo Li, Spreadtrum’s president and chief executive officer, said, “In line with our commitment to delivering innovative technology in order to help customers differentiate their products, the SC6800H provides handset manufacturers a powerful and stable mobile phone solution that we believe will be an attractive and essential platform for the emerging mobile business.”

Location tracking basics

0

The recent controversy surrounding Apple’s location tracking services has shone the spotlight on these services.

Location tracking is a service through which one can find the current position of a mobile phone. The phone needs to contact the closest antenna, which it constantly does even while it is moving, and the strength of the signal is also used to determine where the phone is located.

Handsets can be tracked through this process. In this case, a software is installed on the handset, which finds the location of the phone using signal strengths of the home tower and nearby cells and cell identification, from which data is sent to the carrier all the time.

If the handset has (global positioning system), location tracking becomes even more accurate. GPS makes use of 24 satellites, which are revolving around the earth in such a way that at least three satellites at one time focus on one place to make sure the location data sent is correct. The accuracy range with GPS is a few metres.

The GPS system, however, is dependent on weather conditions and the phone’s location. For example, if the phone is inside a building, tunnel, or garage, its position cannot be tracked.

Another method for location tracking is through WiFi, a method that is slightly less accurate but is better than location tracking based on cell tower signals.

The accuracy is 20 to 30 metres, which is acceptable for most purposes. At the same time, once the mobile phone is out of the WiFi area, the tracking process goes for a toss.

The recent controversies involving and iPhone location tracking services have caused people to fear that these services invade their privacy.

Five of the best free games on Android

0

Mobile phone gaming is giving stiff competition to gaming on other platforms, and to a large extent the credit goes to the newer breed of smartphones. With advanced processors, better graphic capabilities and controls that range from just touch to motion control, smartphones give a realistic feel to the games being played on them.

Here’s our list of the five best free games for smartphones:

Angry Birds:

The creator of Angry Birds, Rovio Mobile’s success is due to this game alone. The name of this game is itself enough to bring smiles to the faces of lakhs of people.

Who would have thought that the simple idea of launching a few screaming birds at some worthless pigs from a catapult will result in the creation of a legend.

But the truth is right before our eyes.

At present, Angry Birds is the most popular and the most downloaded game across smartphone platforms. Users can enjoy the latest installment of Angry Birds Rio on their smartphones once they are done playing the original version.

This game has a full version and an ad supported one as well.

Labyrinth

This game brings back memories of a small game built on our pencil boxes in school, that had four silver balls and a circular maze, in which the goal was to get all the four balls to the center of the circles.

Well, labyrinth is not different. The objective of this game is to take the silver ball through the tricky track and reach the goal, and the best thing is that this game uses the inbuilt of the smartphone to allow motion sensing direction control.

There are 10 different levels in the free version and users are allowed to make their custom levels as well, so hours of fun are guaranteed.

This game has been developed by Illusion Labs.

Robo Defense

Robo Defense is a real time strategy game in which you plan ways to ward off constantly growing attacks by the robot army that wants to take your castle.

Players have to deploy weapons to defend themselves from the army. The weapons can also be upgraded by using the money earned by killing or destroying robots.

The game starts at a very basic level of difficulty. As it progresses, the degree of difficulty increases, thereby increasing the number of robot attacks, and also sending more and more difficult opponents that require a higher level of skill or strategy to kill.

The free version only includes one level but a little tweak to the difficulty settings can give a different game-play experience altogether.

Cyberlord Archology

The game is set in the year 2173, when the powers of the governments are on the decline and the world is governed by mega corporations.

You have to lead the resistance forces and save the world from total surveillance!
Your role is to lead a four-man team on infiltration missions, hacking into camera systems and computer terminals, taking over security robots and luring enemies into ambushes with mines and sentry guns.

Mouse Trap

This is possibly one of the simplest puzzle games ever made but it has all the ingredients to keep players of all ages hooked to it.

The story idea behind the game is to move bricks and other obstacles from the mouse’s path and help it to exit. The levels are simpler in the beginning and as you progress through the game, the intensity and level of difficulty increase, with more complex puzzles and unmovable tiles in the way.

The mouse knows only one way and that is to go straight. So you have to wear your thinking cap and move the obstacles out of its way. If you run completely out of ideas then you have the option of restarting the level or get a hint that gives step by step guidance to finish the level.

But there is a limit beyond one help request per hour; so you will be forced to use your grey matter.

0

The iPad2 keyboard acts as a cover for the tablet. The keyboard also helps users make text entries into the iPad. The keyboard cover for iPad from Logitech is available for $99.99 (about Rs 4,500) on pre-order.

The other cheaper Bluetooth keyboards available from Logitech for Android and Apple tablets are available for $69.99. Users can fold one of the keyboards in half which works as a stand for the iPad.

The company has also introduced a mouse for tablets which run on Android 3.1 and higher. Logitech charges $49.99 (Rs 2,250) for the mouse.

Logitech has also come out with wireless speakers with built in battery that can run for about 10 hours. Along with this, there is 3.5 mm jack also. However, at $99.99 (Rs 4,500), its price is seems to be on the higher side. Expect the prices to reduce once they become popular among the consumers.

Acer Iconia &#151 a tablet with a difference

0

In this world where new technology is being produced and discarded at a rapid pace, Acer has some time back come out with a tablet named as Iconia Tab A500, a product which really stands apart from the rest for many different things it allows the users to do.

The makers call this 3.0 based tablet a ‘touchbook’ simply because there is no keyboard in the device. It has a screen on the normal place with another one where the usual keyboard is placed in other devices.

The virtual keyboard in Iconia allows users to do things that would otherwise have been difficult with the physical keyboard. The moment users place their palms on the lower screen as if they are going to type, the device understands it and displays the keyboard, a full size complete keyboard.

The keyboard supports several languages. Users just have to select the language and the appropriate keys would be automatically displayed on it. Then there is predictive text, which displays the font on the keys you intend to type in.

Apple captured the world’s imagination by bringing in gesture controls which works the way humans naturally interacted with each other and things in the real world, such as the “pinch and zoom” function.

The Acer Iconia touchbook goes one step further and lets users open sites, launch apps, view the desktop and more with a predefined gesture. Users can even lock the computer using a gesture.

All the social media is also in one place with the help of SocialJogger, which enables users to check Facebook, Flickr and YouTube updates from it in one glance.

Since there are two screens, the bottom screen can be used to display different set of information or both the screens can be placed so as to make both one big flat screen -the result is less scrolling and more convenience for the users. Users can even use these two screens to view one large spreadsheet in one go.

Acer Iconia is projected to sell one millions devices by May 2011. In fact, Acer is finding it difficult to keep up with the demand for the tablet.

Till now, Apple’s iPad is the clear market leader, despite the fact that it was released long ago. Though nobody expects, but it is interesting to see if Iconia comes close to the iPad.
