It’s time for phones and users to go green

0

As the whole world gets ready to observe the World Environment Day on June 5, different organisations and companies are planning a slew of activities to observe the day. We wondered on what the mobile users and even the mobile phone companies could do or were already doing to save the environment.

The issue of e-wastage has over the years attracted lot of attention. With increasing mobile penetration, the issue has further gained ground. According to an estimate there are already five billion mobile subscribers worldwide today. There are many more unused handsets. With each passing day the monster of e-waste generating from these discarded handsets grows bigger.

Notably, in UK only the unused phones worth 2.7 billion pounds are lying unused. In the worldwide context, this figure definitely would be lot more.

The role of ordinary mobile phone user, thus gains importance. Many handset manufacturers and organisations recycle old handsets and use those materials to produce new ones.

Cellphones contain many different substances that are toxic and potentially hazardous to the environment and health. These include ferrous and non-ferrous metals, lead, magnesium, copper, mercury, plastics, glass, liquid crystals, barium, concrete, ceramics, rubber, arsenic etc.

Hence, it becomes crucial that m-waste is disposed of in a proper manner. Also, after recycling, the materials obtained can be used to make useful items such as utensils and benches. In fact, metals extracted from e-waste are resold in the commodity market by recycling agencies not only in India but worldwide.

We have already discussed this in one of our earlier article.
Handset manufacturers have also a big role to play here. Many manufacturers are already making phones which are 80 per cent recyclable. Also, they make these handsets in such a way to reduce their carbon footprint by a significant amount.

For example, Nokia has e-waste dumpers where users can dump their old mobile phones. Another mobile company, Sony Ericsson has also launched GreenHeart programme in which it manufactures only green phones. The green phones later launched by the company had a reduced carbon footprint – about 15 per cent lower. The plastics used by the company were recycled, and solvents in the phones were also reduced. Sony Ericsson plans to cut emissions by 20 per cent before 2015.

Most of the carbon footprint reduction happens due to less use of paper in the packaging of the phone. Even the user manual was replaced with electronic user manual on the phone itself.

There are no plastic bags within the box either, and about 80 per cent of the plastic used in the phone is recycled plastic. The solvents in the paint have now been replaced by water soluble colours.

Sony Ericsson also intends to increase the scope of its recycling activities by collecting used phones from its customers. The company intends to collect one million phones starting this year itself. Some green activists, however, responded by saying the company should increase the number of its recycling points across the world.

We can also do our part to save the nature by choosing e-bill facilities instead of paper bills. This step alone will save large number of trees. For example, a report said that for every 3,000 bills that a company send to its customers, it has to cut one tree.

Now there are more mobile customers, users can easily imagine the effect of users opting for paper bills on the environment.

New Samsung app streams images to smartphones from TV

0

Samsung has introduced a new application for Galaxy S II smartphone that can stream images directly to the smartphone from a Smart TV.
Dubbed as Smart View, the application supports Samsung Smart TV models, Series 7 and Series 8, both of which are available in India.
The Smart View requires 2.3 Gingerbread or higher updated running on the device and currently supports Galaxy S II.

New Smart View app acts as a full remote control for the Smart TV and Blu-ray Disc products when connected to the same via wireless router. The app even offers an onscreen keyboard wherever text entry is required.

Besides that, the app also acts as the optical game controller for the games on your TV. The gyroscopic sensor of the smartphone adds more fun while playing games on TV using your smartphone as game controller.

Noteworthy feature of Smart View is that it allows pushing content from smartphone to TV and TV to smartphone when both app and Smart TV are connected over Wi-Fi. Not only that, you can sit on the couch and fine-tune the controls for the TV and Blu-ray Disc players using the Smart View app.

One crucial part is that you’ll need to have a network setup at home or connect Samsung Wireless LAN adapter to the TV port.

The app lets you do what one can do with Apple TV and iPhone/iPod touch using WiFi, i.e. two-way streaming of multimedia content between TV and a smartphone.

Currently the App supports only Galaxy S II and Samsung plans support for Galaxy S (GT-I9000), Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Player (YP-G870) in coming months.

Get extra ipad storage with Kingston Wi-Drive

0

Kingston has come up with a new device that can be used by the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod touch owners as an additional portable storage space, and has been dubbed as Wi-Drive.

The new Kingston Wi-Drive is available in 16GB and 32GB storage options and will allow users to access data wirelessly using iPhone (3G and higher), iPod touch (3rd Gen and higher) and iPad.

Indians will have to wait till June end to buy this additional storage for their devices. At present, Wi-Drive is available outside India for $130 (Rs 5850 approximately) and $175 (Rs 7875 approximately).

Several users are either not aware of the services offered or believe in carrying their own data with them. Apple iOS device’s shortcoming of non-expandable storage can be dealt with this Kingston Wi-Drive that is enabled.

The Wi-Drive device comes with its own battery backup and supports streaming of music, photos, videos, PDFs and more. Apple devices need to connect with the device using the Wi-Drive (which will be available soon) over Wi-Fi to access their files.

The Wi-Drive supports different audio file formats such as AAC, MP3, WAV. Besides, it also supports different video files (m4v, mp4, mov, Motion JPEG, AVI), image (jpg, bmp, tiff) and document formats (pdf, doc, docx, ppt, pptx, txt, rtf, and xls).

The Wi-Drive also works as a portable storage which one can simply hook to Windows, Mac or Linux platform based computer to quickly transfer data.

Being pocket friendly, you can carry this portable storage anywhere with you and simply enjoy streaming of content provided you have Wi-Fi setup or you can create a personal mobile Wi-Fi hotspot using the iPhone 4 (requires running iOS 4.3 update or higher).

Nokia to unveil two dual SIM handsets in India

0

Nokia will announce two more entry-level dual SIM handsets in India on June 4 at an event. Though no details of the products have been divulged by the company, we believe that the two handsets will be X1-01 and C2-06.

The new offerings, from Nokia, promises consistent battery life, and music features. Nokia claims that the new handsets are capable of storing settings of up to five different SIM modules. Both phones carry a dual-standby feature that enables receiving call and message notifications on both SIM modules rather than turning SIM cards on or off.

Nokia X1-01 promises 13 hours of talk-time and 43 days of standby time. As part of the X-series, the new X1-01 is a music-centered device and boasts to be the loudest amongst the entry level lot. One can add up to 16GB for storage to play music files using built-in and also enjoy the FM radio. Its 3.5mm jack also would allow you to plug in your favourite pair of headphones.
This dual-SIM handset also allows setting a custom ringtone or logo to each SIM for up to five SIM cards.

Last year Nokia launched the C1-00 and C2-00 dual-SIM handsets and this time we believe that the C2-06 will see the day of light. Nokia C2-06 will run Symbian Series 40 operating system and will have resistive touchscreen with slide-out keypad. Besides a 2 camera, C2-06 will have 3.5mm for putting your favourite pair of earphones.

Let’s wait till June 4 to see what Nokia has to offer for the dual-SIM cellphone segment.

Microsoft reveals Windows 8

0

Microsoft has revealed its new tablet-optimised operating system, Windows 8, the Wall Street Journal’s tech website has reported.

The new version of Windows, showcased during conferences in both Taipei and California, is refreshed with new chipsets and user interface but the company has not come out with a release date yet.

Windows 8 will run on system-on-a-chip (SOC) designs which will include ARM processors to help devices perform faster online. These devices will be optimised for touch but will be slightly different from those running Windows 7, which was made primarily for desktops but supported touch as well.

Windows 8 will work with a keyboard or mouse, but will still remain primarily a touch operating system. Besides, it will have a tile-based user interface, which seems to have been inspired by the user interface of Windows Phone 7. It will also have a newly designed start screen, but won’t feature a start menu.

Windows 8 will also offer a completely new development and distribution model. The apps being denoted in the live tiles will be updated all the time according to user activity. At the same time, Microsoft has not cleared the air as to how it will integrate Kinect, Xbox Live and Skype in Windows 8.

All that has come out of the announcement is that it is a post PC era product, and that users can expect a lot more mobile devices than were earlier possible on Windows 7.

Tablet users who are Windows users as well will find it comforting to be able to work with the new devices using a keyboard and mouse. The only problem is that we don’t know whether Windows 8 will have a dual operating system set up or not.

Curiously, the earlier Windows applications are designed to work on Intel processors; whereas Windows 8 has been designed for ARM processors. How Microsoft handles the transition still remains to be seen.

So far Microsoft did not speak much about its tablet strategy though it had earlier included touch features in the Windows 7 operating system, which were used by some manufacturers in tablets as well, but these tablets didn’t do well in the market.

Nokia looking to develop a unique tablet

0

Nokia is going to become part of the tablet market, though a specific release date and product specifications have not been announced. Stephen Elop, chief executive officer, Nokia, disclosed this in an interview. He also said there were several tablets already in the market, and that if Nokia did go on to produce a tablet, it would be a unique one.

Stephen Elop said, “We have a number of options in the tablet computing space given the changing strategy that we have. For example, we could take advantage of Microsoft technology and software and build a Windows-oriented tablet, or we could do things with some of the other software assets that we have. Our team right now is assessing what’s the right tablet strategy for Nokia.”

He added, “I’m not going to announce a tablet here today. But as a high level point, a connected digital experience will increasingly define what consumers are looking for. It’s important for us to play across that space. We have to address that whole space.”

About the smartphones, he said the Nokia Windows phones would arrive by 2011 end, preferably before the Christmas holidays, and he clarified he was already using one such smartphone, though he didn’t reveal the device during the interview.

When Stephen Elop joined Nokia a few months ago he assessed that Symbian would take too long to take on the established smartphone operating systems; whereas if Nokia adopted it would find it difficult to differentiate its products in the market.

The only logical conclusion left for Nokia was to partner with Microsoft and its Windows Phone platform. He also said he was competing with Google and Apple and not with other Windows Phone producers as he was primarily interested in making the Windows Phone ecosystem stronger, which could only be done by working with Samsung and other companies that produce Windows phones.
