Top three mobile browsers in the country

0

Internet usage via mobiles is growing at 400 per cent per year in the country. So it is obvious that there is a need to have a better mobile browser to improve user experience.

Here we present the best mobile web browsers based on data from Mobango, an independent mobile application store that provides free apps.

Opera Mini J2ME web

This version of Opera browser, which is meant for Java-based phones, is the most downloaded browser in India. A major reason for its popularity is that it was the first entrant in the mobile browser space and it attracted the masses because in India around 80 per cent people use Java-based phones.

UC browser

The second-most popular browser, according to Mobango, is the recently launched mobile version of Firefox, the UC browser, which is considered to be fast and light.

Some of its features, such as powerful search, stable network, multitabs, compression technology for faster loading, download manager, good preloaded time, predictive URL completion, view mode, save and share, and file manager have been received well and make it easy to browse the net using the typical small screen and slow network speeds.

Bolt browser

Bolt browser, which was launched last year, is fast gaining popularity and is at present the third most downloaded browser in the country.

Bolt offers fast browsing and HTML5 support for video playback. One of its most interesting features is the fact that there is a long list of web applications that this browser supports, which includes Google Docs, Mafia Wars, and even Twitter and Facebook apps.

Another difference is the fact that the browser doesn’t reprocess the web page, or re format it, so the web page appears the same as it would on a PC. While this is good in most cases, it poses a problem in the case of a website with a complex design. Bolt also has very decent support for Indian languages, which makes it better suited for India.

All the above mentioned browsers are free for download and are available through various application stores including Mobango, GetJar, Ovi Store, Market etc.

Motorola Xoom tablet for sale in India

0

Announced almost a week ago, Motorola Xoom tablet loaded with 3.0 Honeycomb is now on sale both online as well as at retail outlets. This is surprising because Motorola hasn’t officially announced the market operating price of Xoom tablet yet. A spokesperson said on behalf of Motorola that the official market prices of the device would be announced shortly.

The market operating price of Motorola Xoom WiFi is about Rs 34,500 and its WiFi+3G model costs Rs 41, 500. Xoom WiFi is available online at a price ranging from approximately Rs 31,500 to Rs 32,500; while the WiFi+3G model is available at approximately Rs 39,000 to Rs 39,300.

Motorola Xoom tablet was first unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2011, along with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, a tablet-specific operating system. Housing a powerful dual core 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 system on chip, Xoom has a 10.1 inch widescreen (1280 x 800 pixel) display. With a 5 camera at the back and a 2 megapixel camera on the front, the Motorola tablet certainly packs an impressive set of features.

India already has Apple iPad 2, a 7 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, Creative Ziio, Acer Iconia, and BlackBerry PlayBook in its tablet segment and now Xoom has joined the competition. Next month, we expect Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Asus Transformer, and ViewSonic ViewPad tablets to hit Indian markets.

Usually, tablets are available in 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 versions &#151 all mostly possessing 1 GHz single or dual core processors. For all these tablets, the balance of price and features plays a crucial role. This is because potential buyers always tend to evaluate whether to go for a high end tablet or to buy an entry level laptop for about Rs 35,000.

Nowhere do we see tablets actually replacing netbooks or entry level laptops. However, these new products certainly are setting up a new gadget segment altogether.

Once the Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 is made available, it should be getting Android 3.1 Honeycomb update as soon as one takes it out from box and gets the WiFi settings working. Supporting Flash Player 10.2 and HTML5, the Asus Transformer seems perfect enough to support smoother web experience.

The full Qwerty keyboard with touchpad is an optional accessory and Asus charges $150 (Rs 6750 approx.) extra for that.

India already has Apple iPad 2, Samsung Galaxy tab 7-inch, HCL Me tablets, BlackBerry PlayBook, HTC Flyer, MSI WindPads and Motorola Xoom to compete in the tablet segment.

HTC Evo 3D expected in India in August-September

0

Breaking all myths and rumours of tentative launch dates today, HTC announced the official launch date for its upcoming smartphone for the UK market. HTC Evo 3D, the much anticipated handset, will be made available for retail in the UK from next month onwards, i.e. starting in July. And looking at the timeline of recent product launches by HTC, it is expected that similar to previous devices from the company, Evo 3D will come to India following its UK launch. Although the price of Evo 3D has not been announced, it will probably be upwards of Rs 35,000 in India.

HTC Evo 3D, as the name signifies, is a 3D smartphone based on Google’s Gingerbread 2.3 operating system, with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon system on a chip &#151 MSM 8660 &#151 running at 1.2 GHz with Adreno 220 graphics engine, with 1 of and onboard storage. In contrast with its sole competition in India &#151 the LG Optimus 3D, Evo 3D definitely seems faster in terms of specifications.

The device features a 4.3 inch 3D display with native of 540 x 960 pixels, which is slightly better than the screen of Optimus 3D, with resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. Both phones have screens of the same size.

Evo 3D features two 5 cameras at the back, capable of capturing 3D visuals in 2 megapixel resolution and 720p 3D video at 30 frames per second as well. Apart from 3D video the camera is capable of recording full 1080p high definition video at 24 frames per second, along with 5 megapixel 2D still images.

Android Market updates itself

0

Android Market is receiving new features from Google all the time, and this time it’s about the descriptions page in the web version of Market. On the page in which users see the average rating of the app, at the bottom they can view the breakdown of app reviews as well.

Earlier, users could only see the overall rating of a particular app, but now they will know how that rating was arrived at. For example, they will know how many users gave the app four star reviews; how many gave it two star reviews and so forth.

The update was rolled out in the Android Market on Friday. It would be great if Google can also provide users the facility to jump to one or two-star reviews only. The reason is that some users who rate an app poorly may have genuine problems with the device, and it works both ways, future users may get the power of information and the app creators will get feedback regarding their products if they can access poor ratings. In related news, Noah Bordner, a game developer, said in a blog post that the perception about Android Market among users, that they should only look for free apps on the platform, is misplaced.

He further added that it is easier to spot the good apps on Android Market rather than on iTunes because most apps are average and the good ones therefore stand out. Also, paid apps are easier to find on Android because they are clearly demarcated from free ones.

Nokia N9 camera demystified

0

Nokia’s newest MeeGo based smartphone, N9, has a uni-body design which is similar to that of Nokia N8. But even though design was of prime importance, a lot of attention has been given to functionality as well. Even with 70 per cent reduction in the sensor’s size, as compared to the N8, the N9 can do some pretty impressive things with its camera.

Similar to the Nokia N8, the optics for Nokia N9 are provided by Carl Zeiss, and according to Nokia these optics provide 60 per cent more viewing area as compared to other camera phones in the market. Secondly, the imaging sensor, although smaller in size, has been optimized for image capture in both 4:3 and 16:9 ratios, giving wider image capture choice to users.

Some of the things that were missing in the N8 when it was originally launched but that will feature in the N9 are automatic blur reduction for photographs and continuous while taking pictures or even while recording video, which can be done in high definition, along with audio, by the N9.

Although many things are nice in the Nokia N9 it will be missing out on some really big things like the N9 gets an 8 camera in comparison to a 12 megapixel one on the N8, and along with that N9 only gets an LED-based flash; it doesn’t have a Xenon flash. Although Nokia has tried to make the flash better that usual with 20 per cent increase in lighting, nothing beats Xenon.

Nokia has also added a non destructive photo editing feature to the N9. This means that users can revert to an original image even after months have passed since it was edited on the smartphone. Along with that the new camera application will also allow editing of images right there in the preview mode so that users do not need to open the image editing application.

In terms of technology the Nokia N9 smartphone looks good, but we can determine how well it will do only upon trying out the device.

Nokia introduces Mobile Money Client on all Nokia devices

Nokia today announced its plans to embed the Mobile Money client in all Nokia devices in India going forward. This service provides access to financial services to people and business establishments who do not have a bank account or access to a financial institution through their mobile phones.

The Mobile Money client will be available on Nokia’s high end Symbian S60^3 and Anna devices; Series 40 feature phones; and Series 30 entry level devices.

Nokia Money mobile financial services initiative is already being implemented in India through partnerships with Union Bank of India (UBI), Yes Bank, Obopay and a wide range of merchants, retailers and business correspondents.

The services, called Union Bank Money and Mobile Money Services by Yes Bank, are already available in several regions and will be rolled out across several other parts of India in the forthcoming quarters.

With the Mobile money application that has been names as”Money” consumers will have the option of subscribing to either Union Bank Money or YES Bank Mobile Money Services from their Nokia devices. The can be activated at Nokia retail and other outlets, who are also authorized banking correspondents of Yes Bank and/or Union Bank of India.

“Mobile Money services eliminate dependence on the physical presence of a branch or availability of internet banking services. Embedding the Money client in the Nokia devices going forward further makes the service ubiquitous and accessible for consumers across categories. We believe our partnerships with Yes Bank and Union Bank of India will help us connect the unbanked population in the country by leveraging the wide reach of our combined networks and the deep penetration of mobile services in the country.” Said Gary Singh, General Manager, Nokia Mobile Payment Services .

The Money App is deeply integrated in its functionality with the phone and other phone services. For example, the selection of recipient in a send money transaction is directly integrated with the phone book; sending money thus becomes as simple as sending an or making a phone call.

To make the service simpler, the user-interface is de-coupled and separated from data transport. Therefore, the user does not need to know which transport (SMS, or Wifi) is in use during the transaction.

Mobile Money Service allows users to avail multiple financial services functions such as: Bank Account management with detailed information of transaction done, bill payments, money transfer, cash withdrawal from cash-out outlets (registered Nokia stores) and ATMs and mobile phone recharges as well.

Consumers who already own a Nokia phone without the Mobile Money client can simply visit a Nokia Money agent and get the application loaded onto their existing phone. They can also use the service via text messages, which do not require the client.

Top five camera apps for smartphones

0

With the incorporation of cameras in to the phone users just love taking pictures with their camera phones. Be it with the camera phone of 1.3 megapixels or 12 megapixels, users just keep flooding Flickr with their pictures. Here is a list of camera apps that we believe you would enjoy using on and platform based smartphones.

Adobe Photoshop Express

Adobe Photoshop Express for Android gives the users a feeling that they are almost carrying the Adobe Photoshop software in their pocket. The also gives an upload option to the users so they can upload their photos to social networks such as Facebook, Photoshop.com, Flickr and TwitPic.

The facility to edit the photos is present there as well, so the users can apply various effects or borders, apply contrast or even crop the pictures. The first time the Adobe Photoshop Express app is started, the software loads the photos stored in the phone automatically &#151 so the users have to apply minimal effort on their part.

Those who are used to the desktop Photoshop app may be slightly disappointed, but it should be expected on a phone. The tools which are provided are easy to use, but those who are looking for their hardcore filter, should instead opt for their usual PC or Mac. While discussing all this, let’s remember this is a free app.

The iPhone app is also free but it too is does not have full featured, but it works effectively enough to make itself useful to the iPhone users. Users can rotate, crop and adjust the colour levels as well which works alright if users have taken pictures under bad lighting conditions or to tackle similar small problems. The iPhone version can also be used to upload pictures on Twitter and Facebook, just like the Android app. Even those who are novices will find the app intuitive enough to learn it effectively.

For Android

Retro Camera (Free)

For most of the users, photographs are important because they take them back in time. Now there is an app for the Android users &#151 Retro Camera – which makes their recent photographs look older. It’s not that the app is full of features, but it is unique. The user interface of the app is extremely simple as the screen shows the camera just the way it would appear in real life.

The different type of camera options provided through the app include The Barbel, The Little Orange Box, Xolaroid 2000 and finally the Pinhole Camera which adds a touch of nostalgia to your photos. The app comes both in free and paid versions, so obviously the paid version comes with more detailed cameras and elaborate features.

Processing the photos takes some time (about a minute) but that doesn’t mean users cannot take another photo in the meantime. All the photos are queued up for processing of the photographs. Once the image processing task has been completed, the gallery page displays ten photos hanging for drying. Users can use their finger to swipe through the screen to view other photos. The app has been developed with a lot of attention to detail, and the user experience starts from the icon of Retro Camera itself.

PicSay (Pro version Rs 191.11, free version also available)

Working with android based PicSay app, is extremely easy, as once the app is opened, users just have to click “Get a Picture” button to choose the picture they wish to work on. The app also helps users resize their pictures, and the other options include Word Balloon, Title, Stickers, Effects and Export.

The real fun of the apps lies in stickers and effects which let users turn the pictures into statements, simply because they can do so much with the pictures. In terms of effects, there are numerous effects available in the pro version, which is worth the paid app. Users can insert thought bubbles to the photos, and captions, stickers to the images as well. They can change colour schemes too.

Hipstamatic (Paid app for Rs 90)

At the time when other camera apps help you improve your images, the Hipstamatic app, that runs on iOS, does its best to take the users back to the technology days. It simulates the viewfinder, the facility of changing lenses, film types and even flashes of the camera. Just by touching the icons, users can change the film type too.

Those mentally very much in the digital age, however, need not worry since they get the option to upload the images to Flickr and Facebook as well.

Photogene (Paid app for Rs 90)

Let’s face it, cameras or digital photography is not an iPhone forte, so it’s natural users would look for image editing apps to improve their images. Photogene is one such app which comes armed with a simple user interface, and it offers several features not present in its rivals though it doesn’t offer some common features as well.

Micromax handsets to integrate better Indian language support

0

Micromax has signed a deal with the makers of Panini keypad, and will soon incorporate these keypads in their phones.

A Micromax spokesperson confirmed the news and said, “The management is excited about the possibility of this new technology, and the company is working towards integrating these in some of the future handsets.”

He added, “Support for Indian languages will open a new market for value added services and content consumption as people currently do not use them as they are not familiar with English language.”

Although he did not disclose model details or time of launch, he said that it is a work in progress and that we will see the results soon.

It is widely anticipated that the Panini virtual keypad will be a big step in making local language support practical for people. Till now, people needed to type in Roman script to get a word in Hindi or any other regional language. For example, if one wanted to write ‘grape’ in Hindi, he or she had to type ‘angoor’ in English, which is not really comfortable for a person who is not well-versed in English.

What Panini does is to display on a virtual keypad the letters on the physical keypad that correspond to letters in Hindi (or any other language), making it possible for people to type in regional languages.
