Google+ app for iPhone tops free download charts

0

Within 24 hours of launch into the iTunes store, the Google+ has made it to the top of the chart for free apps. The start was buggy for the app, and it had to get an update to get things moving again.

The early stage bugs show in the user ratings as well, as some users give 5 star rating to the app while some gave it one star. About 3,000 users have posted their reviews of Google+ app for iPhone on the iTunes so far.

Facebook, the main rival of Google+, is the benchmark by which Google+ has to compare its performance. Currently, Facebook stands at the top of the list of most downloaded apps on iTunes, and Google+ definitely would be looking to reach there.

In Google+, once the users sign in, they get to see the hub, which has six sections including an empty space. The six sections are – Stream, Huddle, Photos, Profile, Circles, and Notifications.

Once the users enter the stream section, a gesture image explains to them how they can navigate between different streams. The Incoming stream is messages from those people, whom the users didn’t add in their circles.

Depending on the frame of mind, this stream may be either annoying or welcome. Huddle, once started, is like any other chat interface.

Most of the Google+ features of iPhone app expectedly resemble the online version of the site, though version of the app has more features compared to the version. The Android version has the automatic photo upload feature which is missing in the later. On Android, the Google+ app download figures is said to be within 1 million to 5 million range.

The Google+ iPhone app only works with iOS 3.1 or higher version. The app is currently not available either for iPad or iPod Touch devices. The app is intuitive and clean, there is a slight problem &#151 anyone can download the app, but only those who have invitations for Google+ would be able to use the app.

Android app player for RIM PlayBook leaks

0

RIM will soon surprise the BlackBerry PlayBook owners with an player that will let them load and enjoy applications on their devices.

N4BB reported about the Beta version of Android App Player showing up on RIM’s website, the page was pulled out after that. This leak is a clear indication that RIM will launch the Android App Player officially in coming few months.

Basically, the PlayBook tablet would get a sandbox where in the Android apps could be loaded and used. Recently, the BlackBerry Desktop Manager update changelog hinted the Android App Player .bar file which is about 143.3MB in size.

Getting the .bar file side-loaded on the PlayBook requires a DDPB Installer file and of course the PlayBook. Apparently the method isn’t legitimate and the Android App Player beta package would be buggy.

After loading the Android App Player .bar file on the BlackBerry PlayBook, several enthusiasts found certain core apps like Settings, Messaging, Email, Clock, Phone, Contacts, Camera, Calendar, Browser, Voice Dialer, Gallery, Downloads, Dev Tools and the Calculator. However, there were no visible options to load third-party Android Apps.

Quite possible that the Android App Player .bar file could be an Alpha or Beta version of the feature that is deemed to arrive in due course of time. What keeps many wondering about whether the feature will be released as part of official software update for BlackBerry PlayBook or will be pushed through the Desktop Manager update.

However, RIM is yet to issue a statement regarding the Android App Player for PlayBook.

Females do sexting more than males: Survey

In India, sexting &#151 sending suggestive and erotic SMSes &#151 is still a distasteful action but in West it is fast gaining popularity and it’s not the males which are hooked to it rather it is females who are addicted to it!

According to a recent study, “Let My Fingers Do the Talking: Sexting and Infidelity in Cyberspace” by Dr Diane Kholos Wysocki and Cheryl D Childers, roughly two-thirds of the women surveyed were more likely to send nude photographs or sexually explicit text messages than about half the men surveyed reports N4BB reported.

The study, conducted in 2009, sexting was more likely among the few surveyed who were aged 19-24. Researchers administered an online survey luring 5,187 adult visitors to the website AshleyMadison.com, an “infidelity” service aimed at married men and women. It asked 68 questions to users about their Internet use, sexual behaviours and demographics.

“Cheating is alive and well, and sexting is on the rise,” Wysocki told The New York Times. “But I don’t believe the Internet is causing people to cheat. There seems to be something going on with marriage that’s the bigger social issue. Before, people would just get a divorce. For some reason, people are staying and cheating instead.”

In the study, women were also more likely to meet people in real life after meeting them online, specifically, 83 per cent of women compared with 67 per cent of men, yet, women were less likely to be anxious about being caught looking at sexually explicit material and less cautious than men about erasing their naughty tracks on the Internet.

Viewsonic to launch WiMax tablet this Diwali

0

Viewsonic is planning to launch its first WiMax tablet in the country. The tablet will be a 7 inch Honeycomb device.

WiMax is a technology that is faster than current networks. Currently, BSNL offers this service on a large scale, but 4G services are likely to be launched by operators like Airtel, Aircel, Tikona and Reliance Infotel later this year or early next year. Whether these operators will go for WiMax or LTE, among the two 4G technology options, is not yet known though.

While talking to ‘The Mobile Indian’, Ajay Sharma, country manager of Viewsonic India, said, “We will launch a 7 inch Android Honeycomb tablet this Diwali, and this will be our first tablet with WiMax network support. It will be a very important launch for us as the country prepares to usher the 4G era.”

The tablet by Viewsonic is likely to be the same as shown earlier at Computex in Taipei (a trade fair), which was a light weight tablet weighing a meagre 380 grams. The device is likely to have at least a 1 GHz Tegra 2 processor, a pair of cameras, and USB, HDMI output etc. It is expected to be priced between Rs 30,000-35,000.

The 4G spectrum auction was held soon after the 3G auction and operators have had spectrum since September 2010. They have, however, been silent about their plans on the choice of technology (WiMax or LTE) and the potential launch date of services.

We earlier said that Reliance Infotel, the only service provider to have a pan-India spectrum license, is likely to launch services using WiMax technology. If that happens, this tablet will make a lot of sense to users as well as to the operator.

Beetel to launch Android tablet in August

0

Beetel, the handset brand of Bharti Airtel, is going to launch a 7 inch tablet in the first half of August. However, there is no information yet on the version of Android the device will use, or on how much it will cost.

Talking to ‘The Mobile Indian’, a spokesperson of the company said, “We do not want to comment at this moment about the details. However, we will launch the tablet in the first half of August and as with any other product from Beetel, this tablet will be feature rich and price competitive.”

We expect the tablet to run on Android 2.2 with support and it is most likely to be priced between Rs 15,000-18,000.

The spokesperson added, “We will initially launch one tablet only, followed by Android based smartphones in the next two months.”

Though the spokesperson refused to divulge details, we expect the phones to be priced in the Rs 6,000-9,000 bracket since Beetle’s competitors, such as Spice and Micromax, already have products in this bracket and anything more expensive will be tough to sell.

58% Indians want mobile webpages to load in 3 seconds

In the last few years Indian telecom companies have been focusing on providing data services but their efforts have not been impressive.

According to a study conducted by Compuware, 58 per cent of Indians who participated in the poll said they wanted mobile web pages to load in less than three seconds. About 77 per cent of the top mobile sites take more than 5 seconds to load, says Compuware.

The research firm polled about 4,000 mobile phone users across the world, and their frustrations while surfing the web clearly showed in the results.

User expectations about how sites and apps should work on mobile devices are highest in China and India, and people in these countries will not hesitate to make their concerns known.

In the current situation, however, the makers of mobile sites need to be careful of the content they place on their pages. The pages need to be simple so that they load faster and users don’t go to a competitor’s website just because the page they initially want to access doesn’t load in time. The report does not paint a good picture of the mobile web, which is unexpected since the common perception is that users are switching to smartphones from feature phones so that they can access the web at any time.

There are numerous factors on which the load time of a web page depends, and load time may go on to increase with websites becoming more complicated in future. The home internet connection is likely to be faster than the mobile connection most of the time, and computers are more powerful than tablets or smartphones.

The situation will gradually change with the arrival of networks as well as dual core processors in phones. 4G connections will offer higher connection speeds so that load times for mobile web pages will reduce considerably.

“We conducted this study as a follow on to our 2009 study that showed mobile users had high expectations, but the majority experienced poor mobile performance. Almost two years later user expectations for mobiles continue to increase, but companies are still not meeting mobile users’ needs for fast and reliable experiences,” said Steve Tack, chief technology officer of Compuware APM.

“Today, 77 per cent of top companies across multiple verticals have mobile page load times of five seconds or more, while mobile users are only willing to wait five seconds or less for a web page to load before leaving the site. Poor performance is preventing many companies from taking advantage of the opportunities being provided by increased mobile access.”

2G data speeds are slow while data is comparatively faster, but the services are still being rolled out and users are experiencing some teething troubles. In some cases, when a user goes out of a 3G coverage area and into a 2G area, his phone crashes. Due to such problems, most users still prefer WiFi networks because of a smooth user experience, reliability, and of course pricing.

RCom launches tariff plan for iPad 2; BSNL still cheapest

0

Reliance Communications has launched special tariff plans for iPad 2 users. The basic plan starts at Rs 203 for 1 of data for a day, but is meant only for prepaid subscribers. For Rs 750, Apple iPad 2 users can get 5 GB of data for a month; while for Rs 1,100 they get 10 GB for a month.

Users need not buy iPads from RCom as the offer is available to both new and existing iPad users. New users can buy an iPad from the open market and get the plan from RCom.

BSNL, on the other hand, is offering unlimited data download over a day at Rs 99 for both postpaid and prepaid customers; and unlimited data over a month for Rs 999. For prepaid customers there is a special plan at Rs 599 with 5 GB of data over a month.

BSNL is also offering a starter pack in which Rs 100 will buy 1 GB of data per month for the first six months. The plan is also available to both new and existing users.

Though BSNL’s plan is cheaper and its services are available in more cities than RCom’s, the PSU telecom operator has no presence in two of the major markets of the iPad 2 – Delhi and Mumbai.

Tata Docomo also offers unlimited data for Rs 1,000 which can be used on iPad 2, making it slightly better than RCom’s unlimited plan. However, Docomo is not present in Delhi and Mumbai circles either.
