Microsoft eyes dual screen devices

0

Microsoft has applied for some touchscreen gesture patents including dual screen devices and bezel gestures, a website said. The patents were filed in February 2010.

First in the list are the off screen gestures which take place along the bezel. Some bezel gestures also display a drop down menu when the gesture is performed – something similar also happens in the ecosystem and BlackBerry PlayBook as well, so the competitors might be concerned about the Microsoft move. Then there are multi-finger gestures, which can be performed on multiple screens at the same time. Another application talks about usual pinch-to-zoom combined with multi-screen devices.

Another new gesture that Microsoft’s application talks about is multi-screen hold and tap, in which the users can interact with apps through split-screen. In real life, users may hold an icon on one screen and tap another object on second screen &#151 the result is, the first object moves to the second screen where users tapped.

At this point, we need to be clear about it: the patents have not been granted yet, these are just applications by Microsoft.

Microsoft Lync to come on Android, iOS and Wp7

0

Microsoft Lync, which is similar to Windows Live Messenger but targeted at business executives as BBM, is set to make its debut on Windows Phone, Android, and Symbian-powered devices in the last quarter of the year. It was revealed during the TechED event in New Zealand.

Nokia has already announced that its yet to be launched Nokia 600, 700 and 701 will come pre-installed with the app. Lync along with Skype will be available on all Windows Phone 7 devices when the is launched.

The TechEd New Zealand conference of Microsoft provides developers and IT professionals the most comprehensive technical education across Microsoft’s current and soon-to-be-released suite of products, solutions and services.

Lync mobile will offer both audio and video conferencing options in addition to the plain text chat. Both Skype (now owned by Microsoft) and Lync will also take advantage of front-facing cameras on Windows Phone.

The level of integration with People Hub (a tab in Windows phone 7 which takes care of phone calls, social networking etc) is not yet known. However, it is likely that it will be integrated well as Microsoft is trying to challenge high level of Google services (like Talk, Map, Picasa, YouTube etc) integration with that acts as a competitive advantage for the Windows Phone 7 rival.

However, how Microsoft differentiates with Skype and Lync will also determine its success. Meanwhile, Microsoft has removed a video of the announcement about lync from its website.

Google to shut down Slide apps

0

Google has decided to discontinue Slide apps which include Pool Party, Photovine and Disco, according to a report. Slide, the social gaming startup, was acquired by Google and was being run as an autonomous division. But the apps launched by the division were never given proper publicity by Google, though earlier it seemed to be part of the plan.

The Slide blog post says, “While we are incredibly grateful to our users and for all of the wonderful feedback over the years, many of these products are no longer as active or haven’t caught on as we originally hoped.”

So the apparent reason, as the blog post suggests, is clear. The Slide products have not turned out to be as successful as it was hoped, and an additional reason is the success of Google+, the social network and Facebook rival from Google. The blog post further says, “We will enable users to either download their photos or export them to a Picasa account. We are working to release this export feature over the coming weeks and, once added, users will have several months to take advantage of transferring their photos.”

The photo sharing feature provided by Google+ is in direct competition with the apps developed by Slide including Pool Party and Photovine.

Android apps will work on future BlackBerry phones

0

As far as mobile apps are concerned, BlackBerry continues to keep its options open. It is reported that the company will make sure its QNX based smartphones support apps as well. According to Bloomberg, Research In Motion (RIM) plans to use a version of the Android app player for PlayBook on its QNX operating system smartphones. The phones are likely to be launched by early 2012.

QNX based BlackBerrys are a significant part of RIM’s plans to arrest the slide of its fortunes in the smartphone segment &#151 at a time when the sales of iPhone and Android phones are increasing.

iPhone and Android phones have access to a large number of apps. QNX smartphones, on the other hand, wouldn’t be able to provide many apps, and that seems to be the reason why the company is enabling access to Android apps.

The dilemma for the company seems real &#151 on the one hand it needs to build a developer community to bring its app store to life; on the other developers seem to be tired with the rising number of app platforms and they want the app scenario to be simple because they don’t want to create multiple versions of the same app. At the same time, the situation will change dramatically if QNX based BlackBerrys begin to sell in large numbers.

BlackBerry brings differential updates

0

BlackBerry Playbook users have another reason to rejoice as Research In Motion has just announced a software upgrade for the tablet OS. The software – v1.0.7.2942 &#151 brings a new differential updates-feature to the tablet.

The differential updates feature allows users to update only those sections of the BlackBerry tablet that require updating. This should result in smaller download file sizes and therefore faster updating. Besides, it will also reduce download costs.

WiFi connectivity to WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) networks has also been updated to provide improved security. The update ensures faster pairing between a BlackBerry smartphone and the PlayBook tablet via the BlackBerry Bridge app.

To make full use of the BlackBerry PlayBook update, RIM has rolled out an update of the BlackBerry Bridge as well. Users are advised to install it on the smartphone as well for maximum compatibility. The update can be located in App World or can also be searched through this link.

BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users must already have BlackBerry tablet OS v1.0.7.2670 installed to experience differential updates. If you still have to update your device you can follow this link to do so.

Existing users can upgrade the OS of their BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to v1.0.7.2942 over the air or they can locate the update using this link. Users buying the BlackBerry PlayBook following the update will be prompted to automatically install the update on their device.

Motorola Atrix: Not the most powerful

0

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of the UK has prohibited Motorola from using the phrase “the world’s most powerful smartphone” in its Atrix commercials. The ruling was issued in response to a complaint by two Samsung users who said the claim was misleading.

The Motorola Atrix runs on a dual core 1 GHz whereas the Samsung Galaxy SII processor is a dual core 1.2 GHz engine. Thus the Advertising Standards Authority concluded that Motorola could not claim Motorola Atrix was the most powerful smartphone in the world.

The ASA website said, “The ASA noted Motorola said, in the context of the ad, the word ‘powerful’ was used to refer to the combination of technical features of the Atrix. We noted they said when the phone was docked into the unique dock or the standalone Lapdock it powered a full desktop whilst providing support for cloud-based computing and a full virtual Windows desktop. However, while we acknowledged the ad showed the phone being used with other associated accessories, we considered viewers would understand the claim ‘The world’s most powerful smartphone’, along with a close-up of the phone, to mean the phone, in isolation, was the most powerful smartphone.”

Motorola Atrix was launched around the same time as the Samsung Galaxy SII was launched in the UK.

First Windows Phone 7.5 hits Japan

0

The first Windows Phone Mango handset, called IS12T, is being launched in Japan by Fujitsu. The phone will be made available in Japan through KDDI (a Japanese telecom operator) and Okinawa Cellular Telephone. The 59 mm thin phone comes in three colours and has a massive 32 memory, stunning 13.2 camera, and is water and dust resistant.

Mango is officially called Windows Phone 7.5 and includes the integrated People Hub in which users can check updates on leading social networks, without having to launch applications separately. Another attraction is Office Hub, where users can read their MS Office documents created on laptops or personal computers.

A statement from Fujitsu says, “Windows Phone IS12T is the first smartphone in Japan to run Windows Phone 7.5. Designed to be simple and easy-to-use, the smartphone is equipped with essential features, including fully integrated social media capabilities.”

The launch of the Fujitsu phone at this time is slightly surprising since Microsoft started accepting applications for Mango phones just two days ago. Even Nokia, which would be focused on the Windows Phone 7.5 operating system, is yet to announce a handset based on the OS. There is no announcement from Microsoft about when current Windows Phone users will be able to upgrade to Mango.

Clear images of the upcoming HTC Bliss handset have surfaced online through a Chinese forum XDA.cn. HTC is holding a special public invite-only event on 1 September in four different cities at the same time and HTC Bliss is most likely to be unveiled at the event.

Bliss appears to run the new HTC Sense 3.5 user interface with a front facing camera. No further details about the handset are available as of now.

Following the suite of the HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa, the new handset in question &#151 HTC Bliss, is most likely to be a stylish device. HTC Bliss will come with different colour options and will be aimed at the younger generation of users.

HTC Bliss may come with a sub-1 GHz and might run 2.3.x Gingerbread update. At the back will be a modest 5 camera. From the image it appears that this Android phone will have a 4 inch display.

The HTC event on 1 September is also rumoured to announce a few Windows Phone 7.5 Mango devices. The event would be held in England, France, Spain and Germany at the same time. The invite clearly states that the attendees will get to see what’s next from HTC. That would include a bunch of new devices and also a sneak peek at the next version of HTC Sense user interface.
