Sony Ericsson focuses on content

Sony Ericsson has announced a partnership with production house UTV and mobile entertainment company Hungama for providing content. According to the agreement, four movies from UTV will come pre-loaded on new Sony Ericsson handsets and 100 party songs provided by Hungama will be available on the handsets as well.
Earlier, the handset manufacturer entered into content partnerships with MTV and Sony Entertainment. MTV is the company’s regional partner in Asia Pacific for providing content.
On the sidelines of a press conference, Anurag Kontu, head, channel marketing, Asia Pacific and head, marketing, India, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, told Telecom Yatra, “We are not looking at an store immediately. However, we have around 200 dedicated developers who are working towards developing applications for us on platform.”
Sony Ericsson also launched five new devices priced between Rs 25,695 and Rs 35,795 and aims to garner a considerable market share in the smartphone segment.
Also, the handset maker roped in Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor as the brand ambassador for endorsing its products.

Vodafone launches IPL recharge vouchers

Vodafone Essar has launched a new recharge voucher, for Vodafone prepaid subscribers, exclusively for the IPL season. Priced at Rs 71, the IPL Bonus Recharge provides full (minus service tax) and bonus minutes equal to the highest runs scored by a batsman in an IPL match on the previous day.
These additional minutes will be valid for a period of five days from the day of recharge and can be used to make calls to local Vodafone numbers during the night.
The recharge coupon is available at Vodafone stores and retailers across the country. The operator is engaging in a few more promotional activities for IPL. It recently announced the sale of IPL tickets through Vodafone M-Shop via interactive voice response (IVR) and SMS.
It also launched a Vodafone Star of the Match competition, the winner of which will get a return air ticket and hotel accommodation at the city where the match is being played, and will be awarded by the winning captain during the post match ceremony.

MTS to launch services in 4 more circles by Dec

MTS, the CDMA mobile services brand of Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL), said that it will roll out services in four more circles by December.
Speaking to Telecom Yatra on the sidelines of a press conference, T Narasimhan, deputy chief executive officer, SSTL, said, “We will be launching our services in four circles by the end of this calendar year. The first launch will be in Andhra Pradesh in the second quarter, followed by Uttar Pradesh (West), Uttar Pradesh (East) and Gujarat.”
The company has completed one year since its launch in India, and to celebrate this, will offer free local and STD calls as well as free downloads through its Mblaze service to, its subscribers today.
Vsevolod Rozanov, president and chief executive officer, SSTL, said that the company will have four million subscribers by the end of the month and has been adding about 1.5 million subscribers every month. He said the company’s current average revenue per user (ARPU) is about Rs 100, and it is most successful in the Karnataka and West Bengal circles. It hopes to break even by the end of 2012.
MTS also said it is planning to double the number of exclusive outlets to more than 200 in Delhi and NCR. Rozanov made it clear that the company has no plans to foray into GSM services and is totally committed to CDMA.
The company has also announced a tie up with over 200 operators across 90 countries to offer international services. These tie-ups will enable MTS to offer its services in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Singapore, UAE, United Kingdom, and USA.
MTS India has over four million subscribers and was launched in March 2009.

Spice Mobiles to launch app store soon

Spice Mobiles, an arm of Spice Group, has revealed its intention of launching an application store soon. Anuj Nangia, head, product marketing, Spice Mobiles, told Telecom Yatra at the sidelines of a press conference that the application store will go live in the second quarter. As far as content is concerned, he said the company already has 250 content partners for music and media and will also work with Spice Digital. Spice Digital is a a value added services provider and is also part of the Spice Group.
Nangia also revealed that the company is currently working on two devices, one of which will be available in the market in the second quarter of this year. Spice Mobile aims to be a $1 billion (Rs 4,500 crore) company by 2014 with a market share of 10 per cent.
It plans to launch 40 products this year, which will include low cost Windows Mobile handsets. Nangia said, “We have entered into an exclusive partnership with Microsoft wherein we’ll be launching some handsets with them. These would be low cost handsets available under Rs 10,000 and would run on Windows Mobile 6.5 platform. The same would be available in the second quarter of this year.”
Spice Mobiles plans to do production trials at its manufacturing unit in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh from first week of April.
Spice Mobiles has also launched S1200, the second handset in their Picture Perfect series. The phone has a 3x optical zoom and Xenon Flash. While the first phone on the series, S7070, was a 5 device, the S1200 has a 12 megapixel camera. Currently, only Samsung and Sony Ericsson have 12 megapixel phones in the market.

India to have 600 mn mobile subscribers by month end: Kamat

Minister of state for communications and information technology Gurudas Kamat said on Tuesday that India is expected to have 600 million mobile phone subscribers by the end of this month.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of Convergence India 2010, Kamat said that the mobile subscriber base, at a teledensity of 47.88 per cent, has reached the expected level. He added that both regulatory regime and innovation, and the enterprise of India’s private players have made it possible for the industry to witness such huge growth in the mobile subscriber base.
As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the number of mobile phone subscribers stood at about 545 million at the end of January. Wireless teledensity was close to 46.4 per cent at that time.
The minister also said, “While formulating the policies, we keep in mind that the best telecom technologies are available to underprivileged sections also. The rural teledensity was 21.19 per cent at the end of 2009.” He added that availability of cheaper handsets can prove to be a boon for people with low income and can enrich their lives. Kamat also emphasised the need for region friendly services to enable greater penetration of mobile services.
Commenting on the need for more spectrum, he said that providing the desired spectrum will enable service providers to increase their subscriber base and added that it is important to use the spectrum judiciously.

Samsung handsets to have Broadcom’s location based services

Broadcom Corporation, a US-based semiconductor company for wired and wireless communications, has announced that it will provide navigation, location based services and functionality for Samsung’s new handsets.
The Broadcom BCM2075 combo chip integrates three radios – Bluetooth, GPS and FM – and allows these radios to operate simultaneously, and with minimal interference. According to a company statement, the FM radio capabilities in the chip are among the most advanced in the industry, enabling live programmes as well as integrated MP3 recording. The combo chip solution is now available in several handsets in the market.
The new Samsung handsets that integrate the Broadcom combo chip include the Blue Earth (GT-S7550) handset, as well as the Corby Pro (GT-B5310).
Broadcom offers software engineering services in computing and networking equipment, digital entertainment and access, and mobile devices. Broadcom had global revenue of $ 4.66 billion in 2008 and holds about 3,800 US and 1,550 foreign patents. Its major offices are located throughout North America and it has over 40 offices in 15 countries worldwide.

Tata Docomo launches plan based on daily usage

Tata Docomo, the GSM brand of Tata Teleservices, has announced an offer that will enable prepaid subscribers to choose a plan that suits their day to day requirements.
Under the ‘Daily Plan’, customers can opt for services such as GPRS, local calls, STD and ISD calls, night calling and music, according to their needs on that particular day. For example, if a subscriber opts for a night pack, it will be applicable till midnight of the day after activation, as the voucher has validity up till a fixed date. Thus, a person can make use of the night calling value within that day itself.
To activate this service, customers will need to dial *141# from their mobile phones and select the desired option. Soon after this call, a menu of product options will be displayed on the phone with further instructions to be followed. The user can use multiple packs in a single day.
Deepak Gulati, president, Tata Docomo, said in a company statement, “All prepaid subscribers, existing and new, can now opt for our innovative daily plans, which start from as low a denomination as Rs 5. We expect our subscribers to embrace this offer widely, as this gives them tremendous flexibility and the power of choice to take up a plan that suits their usage pattern for any particular day.”
Tata Teleservices has received a license to operate GSM telecom services under the Tata Docomo brand name in 19 telecom circles and has also been allotted spectrum in 18 of these circles. It has rolled out its GSM services in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Orissa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh, Haryana-Punjab, Kolkata, Rest of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, UP East, UP West and Gujarat, while Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) has launched GSM services in the Mumbai and Rest of Maharashtra circles.

Videocon to complete GSM service roll-out in TN this week

Videocon Telecommunications will complete its launch in the Tamil Nadu and Chennai circles with its GSM service on March 25. The company launched its service in Coimbatore on March 15.
A senior company official, who did not wish to be named, told Telecom Yatra that the company will launch the service in the remaining cities of Tamil Nadu and Chennai circle by March 25.
Videocon is rolling out its service under the brand name Videocon Mobile Services, and the launch will mark Videocon’s official entry into the telecom service industry in India. The company has a license to offer telecom services in 21 circles across the country.
Videocon is currently offering prepaid services in Coimbatore with a base plan that costs Rs 45 for lifetime validity and talktime worth Rs 5 with all local calls at Re 1 per minute and STD calls at Rs 1.50 per minute. To avail the lifetime validity, a subscriber has to do a cumulative recharge of at least Rs 200 every six months. Subscribers will be charged at Re 1 for local SMS, Rs 1.50 for national and Rs 5 for international SMS. The prepaid connection is available at all Videocon Mobile Shops, Next outlets and Planet M outlets.
Videocon Industries, the parent company of Videocon Telecommunications Limited, is a Rs 25,000 crore global conglomerate with a presence in household consumer goods, oil and gas, retail and the power sector.

Airtel, Apple to bring iPhone 3Gs to India

Bharti Airtel and Apple have entered into an agreement to launch iPhone 3Gs in India in the coming months. iPhone 3Gs is the latest iPhone model by Apple and the company claims it to be the fastest among all the variants. It features video recording, voice control and up to 32 GB of storage.
At present, there are three models of the iPhone: iPhone – 8 GB in black colour and iPhone 3Gs – 16 GB as well as iPhone 3Gs – 32 GB in black and white colours.
According to a press statement by Airtel, the iPhone 3Gs handset will soon be available at Airtel stores. The company did not comment on the price of the handset.
Apple sells its earlier model, iPhone 3G, with Airtel also. It is presently available in India at Rs 31,000 for 8GB and Rs 36,100 for 16GB. The company claims Apple iPhone 3Gs to be faster and more powerful than iPhone 3G. iPhone 3G is not available in 32 GB unlike iPhone 3Gs. iPhone 3Gs comes with a 3 megapixels camera along with and video recording. It also has features like built in video camera with editing, voice control, compass, which are not present in iPhone 3G. The internet services that can be done through the iPhone 3Gs include web browsing, e-mail and connectivity.
iPhone 3Gs was launched by Apple in USA in June 2009 and currently costs $199 (Rs 9,000) with operator AT&T’s data tariff plan.
Apple iPhone and iPhone 3Gs are currently availble in 94 countries and will soon be launched in Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The company sold 8.7 million iPhones in October-December 2009 quarter, as per its first quarter results released in January 2010.

UP (East), Bihar lead in subscriber additions in Feb: COAI

As per the Cellular Operators Association of India’s (COAI’s) figures on GSM subscribers for February, Circle B saw 5.5 million additions (3.6 per cent growth over January). Circle A registered 3.7 million new subscribers (2.7 per cent), circle C saw 2.8 million additions (4.7 per cent) and the metros registered the least number of additional subscribers at 1.1 million (2.2 per cent).
The figures also show that Uttar Pradesh (East) and Bihar registered the highest number of additions in February with 1.22 million and 1.26 million, respectively. Other circles that saw high registrations in February are Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu at over 800,000, and West Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar at almost 900,000.
Vodafone registered the highest number of subscribers in February at 3 million, followed by Bharti Airtel at 2.9 million, Idea Cellular at 2.2 million, Aircel at 1.8 million, BSNL at 1.5 million and Uninor, a new entrant, at 1 million. The COAI figures do not include the GSM subscriber figures of Reliance Communications and Tata Docomo.
The total number of GSM subscribers in February stands at almost 408 million, a growth of 13 million subscribers over January.
According to TRAI, Circle A consists of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Goa. Circle B comprises Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Kerala, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (East), Uttar Pradesh (West), West Bengal, Sikkim and Lakshadweep. Circle C comprises Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Assam, the North East, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The metros are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
