Karnataka to use mobile to train manpower and find jobs for them

0

The Karnataka Vocational Training and Skill Development Corporation (KVTSDC) has partnered with IBM to develop a mobile platform which will connect the job seekers with skill training agencies and prospective employers through mobile.

The platform, Smarter Employability Platform, will help increasing effectiveness of employment and skill-enhancement programmes in the state.

Through this platform the state wants to reach millions of potentially employable individuals especially in rural areas and in the unorganised sector.

With this platform job-seekers will be able to find available jobs and apply for the same, while understanding job-trends, and also refer opportunities to their friends: all through mobile phones.

Similarly job providers can post jobs, increase their reach, find matching candidates, connect with trainers, and track latest trends through both mobile phones and web channels.

KVTSDC on the other hand will be able to increase the penetration of its programmes and track the latest employment trends itself.

The project will use technologies like Spoken Web, a voice-based equivalent of the World Wide Web, designed to provide information of value to rural and semi-urban people through their mobiles or landlines in local languages.

A mobile crowd-sourcing-platform, which will enable people to offer opportunities to each other, provide referrals.

Additionally, unique skill-matching-techniques will be used to match job-seekers with available jobs while employability analytics will allow employers and the government to understand demand and supply trends.

The employability marketplace will run on the IBM Cloud providing a pay-as-you-go model and elastic scaling.

“Our goal is to enhance employment opportunities in the state by creating a conducive environment for all the stakeholders.” said Vishnukanth Chatpalli, executive director of KVTSDC.

“As the first phase of the proposed project, the Smarter Employability Platform will be implemented in the two districts of Mandya and Bijapur. It will be expanded to eight more districts within Karnataka in the second phase,” added Dr Chatpalli.

Why should you opt for a Tablet?

0

Before the dot com bust, nobody had visualised desktops’ vulnerability. But then came the laptops. Then too nobody had an inkling that another device will come after a decade which will change the face of computing world, the Tablet.

The tablet concept worked the same way the laptop did, the freedom to compute from anywhere.

Users need not to sit anywhere to do computing. They can send mails while interacting with their friends, browse Internet, look at the photos or listen to music whether they are in a drawing room or in a bus.

You can take notes on the tablet while in a meeting and the other person will not feel threatened as happens with a laptop barrier in between.
But for a heavy user, who wants to do things such as programming and photoshop, still needs the laptop.

Recently, Gartner has forecasted a lesser demand for laptops in 2011 and 2012 as people will migrate to Tablets. Gartner forecasts that worldwide PC shipments to touch 387.8 million units, which is less than the 15.9 per cent growth previously projected by Gartner.

“These results reflect marked reductions in expected near-term unit growth based on expectations of weaker consumer mobile PC demand, in no small part because of the near-term weakness expected in China’s mobile PC market, but also because of a general loss in consumer enthusiasm for mobile PCs,” said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.

Another deficiency of laptops are their batteries. They do not have the batteries which last the whole day. Therefore, the laptops are though transportable personal computers but not completely mobile.

Last but not the least, the Tablet prices are in the affordable range, just like the laptops, for the normal users, with Samsung Galaxy Tab being available for Rs 27,900, Dell Streak is priced at Rs 33,249 whereas two versions of HCL Me are priced at Rs 14,990 and at Rs 25,790 respectively. The low end laptops on the other hand start at about Rs 20,000 onwards.

So if you are stuck between a laptop and tablet computer, make a list of your possible uses before making a buying.

Touch-less touch screen

0

Have you ever wondered that after going through the resistive, capacitive and Amoled input mediums what will happen to the touch based input for mobile phones and other portable devices?

Well Fogale Nanotech, a company based out of France, has figured it all out and showcased the latest in touch technology at the Cebit 2011 IT and telecommunications solutions trade fair.

This next generation input technology will be a mix of both touch and gesture based inputs and taking it a little further where a flick of finger a few centimeters above the surface will also do the same as it does with the touch today.

The base of this technology is none other than the omnipresent touch and gesture based input technology coupled with a new technology that allows the user to navigate on the devices with or without touching the surface.

The company, however, did not showcase any device based on this technology as they still are in the prototype phase and devices seems a little far fetched as of now.

The technology seems promising as it bridges the gaps that were left by the touch based input technology and has the potential to the official successor too.

Once adopted by the tablet computers and smartphones it is expected to change the experience of all 3D applications and otherwise as well.

App Review: I Must Run

0

First you were convicted for nothing and sentenced to something you have never expected. Worst, someone is trying to hurt your love and you have got only 24 hours to save her. There is no one to help you out and the only thing you can do is that you must run.

This is the plot of the game, “I Must Run”, that has been recently added on Nokia’s Symbian store, or the OVI store.

The game requires you to be very attentive to details in order to perfectly time every jump and every duck as obstacles appear.

The storyline of this game is excellent and intrigues the players to the maximum. Being a skill based game the graphics are not very detailed and you see the skyline and other parts of the city in outlines only.

In order to finish this game all you need is super sharp reflexes and proper timing as one wrong jump will let you loose the most precious thing you have with you and that is time.

This is available for download on the Nokia OVI store and also is the recommended game from Nokia OVI store this week. User can visit the Ovi store to download this application for a modest charge of Rs 25 only.

Tips to keep your smartphone safe

0

Cell phones are no longer just for making calls. That’s old news! But another bit of old news is that these phones used to be sturdy. Remember Nokia 1100?

Today’s smartphone is a snob; it won’t take a beating like the poor old fella of yesteryear. You will need to take good care of these smart beauties.

Here are a few simple tips to keep your smartphone happy:

1. Cover up your phone

Phone screens are becoming bigger by the day, and with that the chances of ruining them with scratches have increased. So as soon as you buy your phone, spend Rs 100-300 on a screen guard. These are thin plastic films that you can stick on the display so that it doesn’t get scratched. These cost as little as 50 bucks in a local market, and can cost Rs 800 if they are branded. But remember, if your phone has a capacitive touchscreen, do not use any old screen guard; buy a specialised guard or touch sensitivity will suffer. You can also get your phone laminated, which will cost barely Rs 100-200 and will protect the whole phone from moisture, dust, and scratches.

2. Be careful while pocketing your phone

Men often clumsily put their phone in their pocket along with keys, coins and many other inhabitants, while women put them in there purse where it shares space with lipsticks, combs and many other things I know of, but the phone doesn’t want to share its space and will end up with a scratched body and screen, broken screen, and worst of all, broken circuits.

The best way to protect your phone is to assign a separate space for it in your pocket or purse. If you travel in a personal vehicle, you can also opt for a phone holster that can be attached to your belt (not a good idea in a crowded bus or train, for it is an open invitation to thieves). These holsters have the dual benefit of protecting your phone while protecting you from harmful radiation. If you travel in public transport, try a phone pouch.

3. Keep it the way you keep medicine

Keep it in a cool and dry place. Do not keep your phone in direct sun light and avoid keeping it on the dash board of your car, for it’s very hot there due to the green house effect. The place near the gear shift is the best place in a car.

Moisture is another thing you need to avoid, so if you are sweating, don’t keep your phone in your jeans’ pocket. If you do accidentally drop your phone in water, remove all the detachable components immediately and let the phone dry (you can use a hair dryer for faster drying, though you shouldn’t overdo it), visit a technician and get the phone cleaned from inside (don’t do it yourself).

4. Dust is another enemy

Dust is another enemy of your cell phone, apart from heat and moisture. While you can’t completely avoid it in India, laminating your phone and keeping it in a pouch will help. Regularly cleaning it by removing the covers and batteries and using a brush (a paint brush is a good idea) will help.

5. Do not overload your phone

Lots of apps and data in your phone will slow it down; very similar to what happens to a PC when you are running a lot of software and keep you hard disc near full. So remember to give it some breathing space by using below 75 per cent of storage space. Removing unnecessary applications just as you do on a PC is also a good idea.

Last but not least, do not attempt to make repairs by your self; technicians are best for this job.

Apple iPad 2 vs iPad 1

0

The wait is over. Apple’s iPad 2 is out. But was the wait worth it? What improvements or benefits does iPad 2 have over the original?

Well, to begin with, the answer is yes. There are many improvements that Apple has brought to the iPad. Version 2 is about 123 grams lighter, and 4.6 mm slimmer than its predecessor.

Apple’s next generation processor, Apple A5, powers this device, and according to the company, brings almost double the computing power along with a graphics engine, which is nine times more powerful than the previous one. It also reduces power consumption and keeps the device alive for 10 hours between charges.

A front facing camera has been added, along with a 0.7 mega camera at the back, which can capture 720p video.

And, Apple’s smart cover accessory magnetically clings to the display of iPad 2 and protects it from scratches and smudges.

Over all, iPad 2 fills in gaps left by iPad 1 and is sure to delight the user, but with the market flooding with rumours about the launch of the third edition of iPad, buyers will have to take a calculated decision.
