Handset Review: Micromax Andro A60

0

Since the day of its launch, the Micromax Andro A60 has created a buzz in the market. Firstly for being the most pocket friendly smartphone (it costs only Rs 6,500), then for being from an Indian company and of course for its iconic design.

However, being low in price does not imply that it is missing out on features.

It has an unconventional design. While most of the handsets available now have flatter boxy designs, the Andro’s curvy design (slimmer at the base and fatter at the top) makes it comfortable to hold and operate. The phone has a matte graphite colour finish with trimmings at the corners alongside the display. Thus as far as looks go, the Andro does fairly well and has managed to catch a lot of eyeballs too.

It has a 2.8 inch touchscreen display which is capable of displaying 52, 000 colours in a standard of 240 x 320 pixels. However, Andro’s resistive touchscreen is a heart-breaker. Although the screen is quite responsive to the slightest touch but in this age of capacitives, a resistive touchscreen feels like stone age and we dearly miss the ‘pinch to zoom’ function while playing Angry Birds.

Overall the display is bright and vibrant but the low resolution and resistive touch are a bit of mood spoilers.

On the performance section, the snappy 600 processor does most tasks quickly but the moment you start multitasking it starts slowing down and needs longer breathe times. But occasionally closing the unwanted applications gives it the much needed space and power. The 150MB doubles up as the and make sure you keep enough space free, otherwise the Andro will surely choke up.

The Andro A60 features a 3.2 fixed focus camera, although the box mentions it as an auto focus one. The camera is just for beginners and not for enthusiasts. It does not have a Flash also. In bright light, the images are good and colourful but lack detail and sharpness.

Running on Android 2.1 &#201clair, the Andro A60 is able to run most applications available from the Android marketplace but sadly applications requiring high performance and related to high graphics won’t be able to run properly on the handset. Inclusion of and AGPS (Assisted GPS) is much appreciated. With the services starting all over the country, users will be able to use these services as a personal navigation device too.

Typing on the smaller touchscreen is quite a pain for everyone and even more for people with fatter fingers. To counter this Micromax has added the Swype application to the Andro. While message typing, its software recognises and suggests words also.

The performance of its battery is average. Despite of having a 2.8 inch screen and a smaller processor, the Andro manages a day’s worth of usage. Make sure you get a battery saving application installed when you start using Andro A60.

Call quality of this phone is great and the microphone provides isolation to the voice making it easier to hear even in noisy places. The earpiece is loud and clear and so is the loudspeaker. The supplied earplugs on the other hand are mediocre and the output from the 3.5 mm jack as well. You can change as many earplugs but the phone’s output through the handsfree is underpowered and starts distorting the sound when playing at higher volume.

Andro is manufactured by ZTE Corporation. With the kind of expertise ZTE has in making devices users can be worry free about the Andro A60’s sturdiness.

Although the box mentions the price at Rs 11,999 the Andro is available in the market from Rs 6,500 onwards.

So to sum it all up, the Micromax Andro A60 makes a good smartphone for those who are just entering the smartphone arena. Rightly named as ‘My First Android’, the Andro A60 is the right phone to buy and experience the Android before you could try better smartphones.

Four most expensive android mobile apps

0

Some time back we told you about the most expensive mobile phones, now it’s the turn of some of the costliest mobile apps available on platforms.

Safecell

This is for those who are proud owners of private airplanes. Safecell has been created by Australia based ASiQ Limited.

It uses the airplane’s connection, which in turn is connected to a satellite. The phones on board the airplane, connected together via SafeCell, work as if they are in an area that has mobile network coverage. Users do not have to pay charges either.

The app costs a whopping $ 12,500 (about Rs 5,60,000), which anyway is a meager sum for those who own a private airplane.

Safecell will be released soon. Initially, it will be available for Nokia and other Symbian phones. BlackBerry and Android versions of the app are to follow soon. iPhone users, however, will have to wait a little longer.

Medicine Central

Although the Medicine Central app from Unbound Medicine is costly, it addresses the problem of cost by bundling several apps in one, thus reducing overall costs for users.

It includes MEDLINE Journals, Pocket Guide to Diagnostic Tests, A to Z Drug Facts, Drug Interaction Facts, and 5-Minute Clinical Consult. Medicine Central costs $160 (about Rs 7,200).

Emergency Central

This app covers only emergency medicine. It is a collection of information about diseases, diagnostic tests and drugs.

Users get one year of web access and free updates. Emergency Central app costs $150 (about Rs 6,700).

Mobile Navigator

This app has been created by NAVIGON and it uses the of the handset to guide the user to his destination. The app provides maps, text to speech and traffic information so that users may navigate through traffic with minimum fuss.

Mobile Navigator costs $127 (about Rs 5,700).

Samsung to launch 8.9 inch tablet

0

Samsung is set to launch its first tablet computer which will be lot lighter and convenient than the its existing counterparts, reports suggest.

Reports on Samsung’s bold new unconventional tablet have started to come from the CTIA (International association for the wireless telecommunications) Wireless 2011 exhibition in USA.

It is unconventional because of the tablet’s display size of 8.9 inches.

The 8.9 inch tablet size bridges the gap between the lighter and easier to carry 7 inch tablets and bigger ‘easier on eyes’ 10.1 inch tablets.

The Samsung tablet is lighter with close to 470 grams of weight and 8.6 mm width, which is slightly over the width of a standard smartphone.

The pictures revealed by Pocketnow.com taken right from the venue, shows that the device has a real snappy look.

The pictures also confirm that the device will use a 1Ghz dual core processor. There is no information about dedicated graphics but it is expected to have one.

It could have an 8.9 inch display screen with a WVGA (1200 x 800) that provides it higher density over other tablet computers.

The tablet 8.9 will also use a custom User Interface (UI) which sits on top of the 3.0. The will give it features like the application shift and peek options, allowing users to get a Win 7 type feel while using this device.

Need motivation to work out? Try Endomondo app

0

If you are among those who find it really difficult to keep themselves motivate enough to stick to their work-out regime, then here is your help.

The Endomondo Sports Tracker monitors your exercise and sends information on the same to social networking sites. So if a user is walking instead of jogging, his friends will be able to know that and can post a comment to boost his morale. You can also hear those messages from your friends.

During cycling, walking, running, the app shows the routes, duration, distance you have covered. It also show how much calories you have burned.

Endomondo Sports Tracker app also integrates the built in music players and heart monitor well.

A unique proposition of this app is that you need not to check the phone screen every time to see work out progress.

Endomondo has both free and paid versions, and more importantly, the app can be controlled from the headsets directly.

It’s not the first fitness app though. In fact the apps like Nike+ and Runkeeper are being used by fitness enthusiasts to log their work out details and they share the progress with their friends as well. The only difference with this app is that it is available across all platforms such as such as BlackBerry, Android, iPhone, Symbian, Windows Phone and even Java based phones.

It has been created by a Denmark based company.

With the new Opera mini, this technology comes embedded whereas Opera mobile running devices can choose to activate it in order to improve speed.

Adobe releases update for Flash 10.2

0

Great news for users. Adobe has released a new patch for the problem that had cropped up earlier this month on Android and other devices.

The threat, as identified by Adobe, had a security risk which allowed hackers to take control of any device or computer that uses Adobe Flash 10.2.

The vulnerability, which was earlier identified as CVE-2011-0609, has been removed from the Flash Player with the help of a patch released on March 21.

With this, users can fully utilise the benefits of Flash 10.2 without worrying about security. New users of Flash need not install the patch as the updated setup will be available for download from Adobe’s website. But users need to be cautious while downloading the setup file as some websites might still be distributing the old version.

Users can either download the patch directly from Adobe’s website or can visit Android Market and get the latest upgrade/patch for their device.
