Using HTC’s sense

0

Many people think HTC is only into smartphones, but when it was founded in 1997, the Taiwanese company manufactured notebooks though it soon realised it was too early in the game.

HTC has been an innovative smartphone brand. Its Sense user interface is a great example of this innovation. The software runs on almost all platforms including Windows Mobile and Android. Sense has a long list of smartphone-specific features, but there are a few standard features that most HTC users might not know. So here we have our list of top five features from HTC sense that most of the HTC user do not know of.

Integrated caller

How many times has it happened that you call a person and after your conversation you remember that it is their birthday? Well, Integrated caller displays information about people in your phonebook that appears against their name when you call them or receive a call from them. Integrated caller provides information such as a contact’s birthday; profile status updates etc.

Polite ringer

Nothing can be more embarrassing than if your phone rings loudly in the middle of a meeting. You ultimately feel like breaking your phone to make it quiet but your efforts go all in vain. Not with the HTC’s Sense, though, has a Polite ringer that goes silent when the phone is turned over.

One post to all

Isn’t it a little difficult when you have to post a single message to many different places and networking websites? HTC has created a One post to all feature in HTC Sense that allows the user to post a message or status update from the to all configured social networks. The feature can also be turned off so that posts only appear on specified websites.

Auto time and climate update

People who travel a lot usually need to manually set the time zone on their phone in order for it to show the right time. HTC Sense, though, automatically detects the change in time zone and tells the right time accordingly.

Playing with Nokia’s Bubbles

0

Bubbles is Nokia’s latest experiment and aims to simplify common smartphone operations. It has been developed by Nokia’s Beta Labs – a type of research center at Nokia.

With the use of this on a Nokia’s touch screen smartphone running on Symbian ^3 platform ( Nokia C7, Nokia N8), options of different shortcuts to unlock the phone or change its profile; access messages, missed calls or the music player etc. appear in pop up bubbles.
The user just has to hold a bubble and drag it to an available drop point to initiate the related action. Drop points only appear when the user holds an action bubble. For instance, if a user has a missed call, a bubble will appear on the screen and if it is dragged and dropped at a drop point, the user will be to the missed call sub menu. Before Bubbles came along, one had to go through various menus and screens to do this.

Currently, Bubbles is in beta so users need to activate it by hitting the power or menu button. If it is liked by many people, Bubbles might be integrated into a Symbian operating system upgrade. The app is available free at Nokia’s Beta Labs.

GoPayment is an created by Intuit that makes spending money easy. Now, you can pay for things you buy using the shopkeeper’s smartphone.

The app is available free at Android, BlackBerry and Apple App store. Shopkeepers who need to make transactions amounting to less than $1000 (approximately Rs 45,000) per month do not need to pay for using the app, whereas those with higher transaction requirements have to pay $12.95 (about Rs 600) per month. Intuit also provides a free credit card reader phone to users, subject to the product’s availability which can be used in addition to the app.

Currently, GoPayment is for mobiles though a tablet version might be launched soon. The service accepts payments from major credit cards.

From the security perspective this app is safe to use because even after keying in credit card details, the shopkeeper cannot proceed with the transaction unless the customer okays it with a touchscreen signature.

Apps similar to GoPayment that are currently available include E-Junkie storefront widget from PayPal and Shopit, which provide payment related solutions to smartphone and tablet users.

Thirty new levels on Angry Birds

0

Angry Birds fans using phones have a new reason to rejoice. A big update, v1.5.1, is out and it introduces 30 more levels, as well as support for lower end devices.

There is one more slightly surprising element for downloading Angry Birds, which is permission. This means the update cannot be installed automatically on your device, and that users end up wondering why Rovio ( developer of the game) wants to access the text message facility in the phone.

In its blog, Rovio revealed the real reason behind SMS permission. The company is building its own in-app payment system named Bad Piggy Bank through which it will sell new game levels. No credit card details will be required for payment as the amount will be added to users’ mobile bills.

There is a new graphics toggle option in version 1.5.1 of Angry Birds, which allows users to remove some background elements so the game runs smoothly on phones that do not have advanced processors.

Words with Friends is like Scrabble, and will soon be launched for Android by developer Zynga. The game was earlier exclusive to devices and was hugely popular. It has more than 10 million users around the world. Words with Friends will now soon be available on Android phones. The experience, however, is likely to be similar to that on iOS devices.

The is free and is supported by advertisements though the company plans to release a paid version of the game soon.

Microsoft launches Office Web Apps

Microsoft has launched its Office Web Apps service in India. Office Web Apps are the online counterparts of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, available free of cost with a Windows Live ID on SkyDrive or Hotmail.

The application can be accessed using any internet connected device including most smartphones. The two biggest advantages of Office Web Apps are that you don’t have to download any applications on your phone, and the phone’s memory won’t be used. The application runs on a cloud computing model, wherein the software and user’s data is stored in a remote server which one can access from any device.

Google has a similar service called Google Docs that has been around for more than four years. However, Microsoft’s Office Suite is the most used office application in the world, and a cloud based MS Office software suite will undoubtedly make a compelling application.

Sanjay Manchanda, the director of Microsoft’s business division, says, “Office Web Apps are a key piece of Microsoft’s overall cloud strategy and are designed to empower people to take their familiar productivity experience on the web.”

He further added, “Features like ease of sharing and high document fidelity make Office Web Apps a powerful enabler of productivity in the cloud for modern information workers and consumers alike. Moreover, this is a great tool for students to collaborate on their school and college projects in a seamless way.”

Office Web Apps are capable of formatting a document with full images and footnotes, table borders and text effects. A Windows Live ID is required for Office Web Apps to work. The other requirements are a supported web (IE, Firefox, Chrome, or mobile browsers such as Opera Mini,) and an internet connection.

More than 30 million people worldwide are already using the beta version of Office Web Apps within about six months since it was introduced. Microsoft also announced in November last year that people who use Facebook’s new service will now be able to view Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents directly in Facebook using Office Web Apps.
