Top 5 Cricket World Cup 2011 mobile apps
As Cricket World Cup 2011 progresses, users will find it increasingly difficult to keep up with all that’s happening on the field. To stay in touch with the World Cup all the time, here are some useful apps that won’t make you feel like you’re far away from the stadium.
Cricbuzz Cricket Scores and News
This is among the best apps for Android users to remain in tune with what is happening in the World Cup. Match scores are updated on a real time basis so that users know what’s happening on the field almost instantly. Cricbuzz also provides ball by ball commentary, which is the next best thing to watching the match live. Furthermore, analysis and latest news from the cricketing world will give you a comprehensive experience of the cricketing extravaganza.
Xplore Cricket WC2011 is an Android app for die-hard cricket fans who are traveling from one venue to another to watch matches. It provides details such as maps, directions, and restaurants around the match venue. Add to this the latest news and live scores, something that cricket bugs always crave.
ESPN Cricinfo app provides ball-by-ball commentary, updated news, as well as audio and video features, including push notification. However, some users are angry with this app because it works well on some handsets and not so well on others.
ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 App

Apple and Google content subscription models compared
The two most talked about companies today, Apple and Google, have announced rival services that will enable publishers to set the price and billing terms for content sold through their apps, on the condition that Apple and Google will get a cut of revenue.
The subscription service from Apple allows newspapers, magazines, music, and video publishers to set payment terms for content chosen by users in the App Store. The deal will cover all purchases made either through the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.
The One Pass subscription service from Google makes digital content available across devices such as tablets, smartphones and websites, and is likely to boost the Android platform. Google plans to get 10 per cent cut for all sales made on its platform.
On the other hand, Steven Jobs, chief executive officer of Apple, said, “Our philosophy is simple–when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing.”
The response from Google was swift though the company denies that it has been trying to counter Apple’s move. Google’s announcement is not restricted to mobile devices only; it will serve all web users.
Google One Pass also allows publishers more control over how they let users access content, and at what price. Google says, “Publishers have control over how users can pay to access content and set their own prices. They can sell subscriptions of any length with auto-renewal, day passes (or other durations), individual articles or multiple-issue packages. Google One Pass also enables metered models, where a publisher can provide some content or a certain number of visits for free, but can charge frequent visitors or those interested in premium content based on the business model that the publisher prefers.”
HCL to launch Android tablet by May
HCL Technologies (HCL), a leading global IT services provider, will launch an Android tablet by May, according a source familiar with development who also said that the device will have similar specs to what is currently available tablets in the market.
Currently, there are the OlivePad and ViewPad (from Viewsonic), which are almost clones. Then there is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab with a 7 inch screen, and Apple’s iPad, which has a 10 inch display.
Our guess is that HCL’s tablet will have a 10 inch screen, powered by a 1 GHz processor, at least, and we hope that it runs Android Honeycomb 3.0.
When we asked our source what would differentiate HCL’s tablet from other devices in the market, he said that HCL hopes its sales and distribution network, along with India-relevant content, will help the device succeed.
The tablet’s price is expected to be attractive — at least at par with the OlivePad, which retails at around Rs 23,000.
Beware, your personality may be revealed by your apps
There was a time when people said they could tell a lot about a person by looking in their handbag. The adage still holds true but handbags have been replaced by smartphones. Professor Trevor Pinch of Cornell University, in association with Nokia, found out about people’s personality by looking at the type of apps they choose.
The main personality types are:
Appcentric: They are hard working, energetic and productive. They have a lot of contacts, are tech savvy, and know how to make their technology serve them best.
They’re conventional and prefer data management, numerical and organizational pursuits. Appcentrics get the most out of the more functional apps on their mobile, which they often use as a pocket-sized computer. While they only download apps occasionally, they frequently use them.
Live Wire: Live Wires are active, down-to-earth people who enjoy technical, outdoor and athletic pursuits. Clever and investigative, they’re sociable, have lots of friends and often seek new experiences and adventure, relishing any challenge.
They are reliable and productive and this is reflected in their downloads, which tend to be a mix of health, fitness, social and travel related apps.
Creator: These are creative and imaginative. The creator may be a loner or a team player, but when they socialise they often find themselves the life of the party. A natural storyteller, they will not only rely on the creative capabilities of their mobile but often use social networking sites.
They are up on the latest trends and their creative spirit often drives them to bright colored phones, illustrating that they are fun and open minded.
Connector: Personable, confident and curious, they have a motivating personality. They have an uplifting and motivating personality with a knack for making friends and acquaintances in the online or real world.
They have a collection of apps that they use again and again – often carrying fun apps on their phone and apps that may be useful to others. They occasionally download free apps and their App catalog could do with a refresh.
Apprentice: They appear to be shy, but are not so. They’re inquisitive and clever with a solid circle of friends and a select group of passionate pursuits.
Apprentices are interested in downloading apps but don’t know where to start. Don’t be fooled by their shy appearance. There is a wild side just waiting to get out!
“With so many apps available, people can pick the ones most relevant to them,” Pinch said. “The apps know our tastes, our needs and even our secrets. If you ever want to really know someone, take a look at their apps – you may be in for a surprise!”
The study surveyed 5,200 smartphone users across 10 countries. The data analysed included app types and usage patterns among different personality categories. Professor Pinch also concluded that users are not usually impressed by large numbers of apps – they’d rather go for quality and utility.

Taking care of Lithium ion smartphone batteries
Most current computer and smartphone makers use Lithium-based batteries. While these batteries offer many benefits over conventional nickel and lead ones, they have a limited lifespan and the clock starts ticking the moment they leave the factory.
Among the worst things one can do to a Lithium ion battery is discharge it completely every time. Hundred per cent discharge puts too much strain on the battery. It is just like exercising the human body – some running is good for the body, but one should not try to run a marathon every day. If a Lithium ion battery is completely discharged on a daily basis, its life span will reduce.
Keeping the battery fully charged all the time is not good either as it results in capacity loss. Battery performance decreases gradually either due to usage or aging. The battery lasts longer if there is a shallow discharge, and manufacturers indicate that a battery can endure 80 per cent discharge. Li ion batteries should be kept cool for best results.
In simple terms:
The battery should be charged often and deep discharges should be avoided.
Users should keep the battery cool, if possible. The battery should not be frozen or left in a hot car, either.
Li ion batteries should not be bought by users for later use. Before purchasing Li ion batteries, their manufacturing date must be checked.
Honeycomb will ultimately come to smartphones
Those who are worried about whether Honeycomb, the version of Android for tablets, will make it to their smartphone have reason to rejoice. Android’s open source and compatibility tech lead, Dan Morrill, tweeted, “Honeycomb runs all existing Android apps; all the APIs (application programming interface) and features will come to phones in some form. Just a matter of time.”
There is a possibility that Dan Morrill might be testing an Android upgrade, which could also be called Gingerbread. In related news, PhoneScoop reported that the action bar (app specific buttons which help users take action according to the app, and are above the screen in tablets,) will be applied to smartphones as well. The system bar, at the bottom of tablets, will not be used on phones.
Earlier, Google had said that Honeycomb is completely tablet oriented. Even the Honeycomb emulator available online, when tried with phone screen resolutions, looks broken and offers very limited support.
The latest tweet from Google is likely to calm some fears about Android being too fragmented.
PlayOn app support for Android phones
MediaMall Technologies, a software company based in USA, has launched the free PlayOn App for handsets having Android 2.2 operating system and above.
The application allow users to stream personal media and online videos from networked personal computers to Android handsets over Wi-Fi and 3G. The media library of PlayOn app has video contents from Hulu (ABC, NBC, Fox, etc.), Amazon VOD, Netflix IQ, TBS, CBS, PBS, the Oprah Winfrey Network, CNN, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Nickelodeon, ESPN3, NFL Rewind, MLB, MTV, VH1, Syfy, Spike, TV.com, The Ultimate Fighter and others.
Android users have been waiting for a Netflix app for a long time, and the Hulu fans might have been frustrated over being blocked if they had an Android device. The PlayOn app comes just at the right time for such users. Though the app itself is free, but it would not suffice for the users. Existing PlayOn customers can download the mobile app for free from the Android marketplace.
Jeff Lawrence, chief executive officer, MediaMall Technologies, says, “Our goal is to make it easy for everyone to affordably access online video content using the screen of their choice. With support for Xbox 360, PlayStation3, Wii, Google TV, Roku, iOS, and now on Android, PlayOn offers the most affordable one-stop solution for accessing online video content on your living room TV and mobile device.”
The new users can try it for free for two weeks, and after this period the app itself and full library of content can be purchased by paying $39.99 (approx Rs 1,810) for the first year and $19.99 (approx Rs 900) for subsequent years. If the users are ready to pay $79.99 (approx Rs 3,600), they can have the app for life.
