Google eyes music market, acquires PushLife

0

Google has acquired Canada-based mobile music streaming service PushLife, an indication that the internet giant is eying to launch its own music service.

Founded in 2008, PushLife’s service allows users to buy and synchronise music on their phones with music libraries on their PCs, using iTunes or Windows Media Players as the primary storage centres.

The services of PushLife are currently supported on Nokia (S40 and S60) devices, as well as handsets from LG, Samsung, BlackBerry and other devices. However, the services are not currently available on iPhones.

In a statement, PushLife has said that Google is a perfect fit for the company as “there’s a lot more work to do in the mobile space, like improving the way applications look and making them easier to use.”

The PushLife service will eventually be discontinued, and replaced by Google’s own replacement created through this acquisition.

Apple currently dominates the music market through its iTunes service, which is available across iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Nokia also has started its Ovi music service, which is also gaining a lot of popularity.

Google, which dominates smartphone market through its mobile operating system Android, has no presence in the music market. In the mobile content space music is the biggest revenue generator with more than half the revenue contribution and as such becomes very attractive place to be in.

Financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Top 5 Nokia touchscreen apps

With the advent of touchscreens, mobile phones have without doubt become more interactive. Touchscreens have enchanted users and are a hot favourite these days even among mobile phone manufacturers.

Based on the usage of touchscreen phones, here we have some applications that are essential for your Symbian powered Nokia touchscreen handsets.

Opera

Opera’s latest version for mobile devices, Opera Mobile 11, was launched recently. It is by far the best ever for mobile phones. There is something about Opera that makes it unique.

It has, for instance, the Opera Turbo feature, which also exists on the desktop version of the browser. Opera Turbo does a pretty good job on mobiles and helps save time by loading web pages much faster than stock browsers do.

Using the phone’s capacitive touchscreen, people can also pinch to zoom or view web pages at optimum zoom level as per their needs.

Swype

Swype has recently gained in popularity. It is not just an application but a whole new technology for inputs on touchscreen devices.

As opposed to physically tapping on individual keys even on the touchscreen, with Swype all the user needs to do is maneuver his/her finger over the touchscreen and join the letters that form the word, and Swype will recognise the word.

For example, to type the word ‘HOT’, a user needs to connect H then O and then T without lifting the finger off the touchscreen. Some people find this to be a faster way of typing, and others find it uncomfortable.

Rotary Dialer

If even thinking about those old rotary dialer phones makes you nostalgic then this is the perfect application for your touchscreen phone. It replaces the default numeric dialer on the phone with a virtual version of rotary dialers found on older phones.

The dialed number appears simultaneously on the screen so you don’t end up calling a wrong number. It takes some getting used to but once you do, you will love it.

Nokia Big Screen

Cellphone screens will always remain small as these devices are meant to be portable, but that doesn’t mean entertainment is sacrificed.

Use the Nokia big screen application to connect your phone to a television via an HDMI connection. This way you can play content stored in your phone on the television screen.

You might be wondering why you should install an application for this considering that it can be done directly through the phone. Well, this application, apart from playing content on TV screens, allows users to control content playback from the phone’s touchscreen; or by using a keyboard; or a Nintendo Wii-mote.

Grid Touch

If you too find the menu of Nokia smartphones complicated, then the Grid Touch application is there to rescue you.

With this application users can define what or icon should appear on which page or screen.

This application includes a grid of nine pages that holds all the applications installed on your phone. Users can freely and swiftly shift an application from one page to another just by holding it for two seconds. It is also possible to customise the phone as per one’s needs.

We reviewed these applications on a Nokia N8.

iPhone4 coming to India courtesy Airtel

0

Airtel is all set to become the first telecom operator to launch iPhone4 in India in coming months, the teleco has said in a press release. Incidentally, the teleco introduced the first ever iPhone in India as well.

iPhone 4 is the latest version of Apple iPhone and comes with features like Apple’s stunning Retina display, the highest display ever built into a phone and FaceTime for video calling. It was launched in the USA in June last year.

With a sleek, sharp and thinner design than its predecessor, the fourth-generation model of Apple iPhone comes with a 3.5 inch screen with 640 X 960 pixel resolution.

The phone’s operating system has also been upgraded and is now called 4, which offers features like multitasking, spell check, folders and iBooks.

The phone comes in two versions (of 16GB and 32GB memory capacity), a 5 camera, up from 3 megapixel in the earlier version. The camera has an flash. It has a second camera for video calling.

The phone’s connectivity options include WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI and GPS. The device promises seven hours of talk time, six hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video and 40 hours of music playback.

The sales figures speak more than the specification sheet, and with three million units selling in first three weeks of its international launch, you can easily understand how good the phone is.

The pricing here should not be much different than the international prices. Internationally, its prices start from $500 (about 25,000), and Airtel might sell the latest version along with the earlier one with substantial price difference.

There are no further details available as of now.

Bargain hard to get maximum from MNP

0

Despite being launched three months ago, mobile number portability has hardly been utilised by customers. So far only one per cent of mobile users in the country have opted to switch service providers.

MNP, which was launched in January this year, allows mobile users to change their operator without changing their phone number.

According to figures provided by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), Vodafone Essar was the biggest gainer till the end of February with approximately 190,000 persons switching to its services. Reliance Communications lost about 305,000 customers in the same period. The second biggest gainer was Idea Cellular, with more than 150,000 ported customers.

These minuscule numbers, however, do not portray the real picture. Probably, many more users applied for MNP but did not end up switching operators because they were offered better plans by their existing service providers.

We analysed the MNP offerings of Vodafone and Airtel and found something interesting.
First we requested a code for an Airtel connection. Airtel had gained nearly 150,000 ported customers till the end of February.

As soon as we received the porting code we got a call from Airtel’s retention department. The customer care agent offered us double the for free, and local calls charged at just 20 paise per minute!

In addition to that, it also sent us two free movie tickets a couple of days later (this was probably because of heavy usage on that Airtel connection).

But Airtel is not alone in this regard. A colleague who uses Vodafone’s pre paid connection, and who barely uses his phone, got 100 per cent talk time for two months as part of a retention package from the operator.

For our another connection Vodafone, also offered us a bill plan for Rs 350 with 750 minutes of free calls plus 350 free SMSs on our post paid connection.

Our colleague, who switched to Airtel, was offered a post paid pack for Rs 99 by the operator, even though the minimum billing plan displayed on its website is Rs 199. Under the plan, he got Rs 100 worth of both local and STD calls at 50 paise per minute.

Another Vodafone Mumbai user who shared his experience with MNP got a Rs 199 plan with 400 free local minutes to any network, and after the free minutes were exhausted, he was charged 30 paise per pulse for local calls to any network; 0.50 paise per minute for STD calls, and a discount of Rs 100 on messages.

However, there are things that you need to remember to get the best offers. The first is that you mustn’t call the retention department yourself. If the operator feels that you are doing it to get offers, it will not entertain you.

The other thing is that you must disclose the true reason for your switch as the free stuff will then be better suited to your needs. For example, if you are looking for better local call or data rates, say so. The retention department will then offer you an appropriate plan.

If you are not satisfied with customer service or network quality, don’t get bogged down by the retention offer, there are better plans available with other operators too.

Hence, the moral of the story is: try MNP even if you don’t intend to switch, you will get the best offer, if not from your existing service provider, from another operator.

Samsung Galaxy SII coming this month

0

Samsung is likely to launch the latest Galaxy S II smartphone this month, the company recently said on its official Twitter account.

The tweet did not specify the date or the markets where the phone will be launched, but it did say the phone will arrive in several markets.

Earlier it was speculated that due to last minute upgrades of the processor from 1 GHz to 1.2 GHz, the release of Galaxy SII would be delayed.

Samsung claims that Galaxy SII is the world’s slimmest handset in its category.

The phone runs on 2.3 Gingerbread, and has a 4.27 inch Super AMOLED Plus display (one of the best in the market), a dual core processor, Touchwiz 4.0 user interface design, 8 mega camera with the ability to capture 1080p video, and a 2 mega pixel front camera for video chats.

Its price is expected to be in the range of Rs 30,000, which is not bad for a phone with these features.

Galaxy SII will be the best successor of Galaxy S, with better readability, better battery, a slimmer design, faster downloads, smoother UI, quicker multi tasking, efficient gaming and snappier streaming.
