Samsung Galaxy SII coming this month

0

Samsung is likely to launch the latest Galaxy S II smartphone this month, the company recently said on its official Twitter account.

The tweet did not specify the date or the markets where the phone will be launched, but it did say the phone will arrive in several markets.

Earlier it was speculated that due to last minute upgrades of the processor from 1 GHz to 1.2 GHz, the release of Galaxy SII would be delayed.

Samsung claims that Galaxy SII is the world’s slimmest handset in its category.

The phone runs on 2.3 Gingerbread, and has a 4.27 inch Super AMOLED Plus display (one of the best in the market), a dual core processor, Touchwiz 4.0 user interface design, 8 mega camera with the ability to capture 1080p video, and a 2 mega pixel front camera for video chats.

The smartphone also has a 1 RAM, 32 GB slot, Wifi, 3.5 mm audio jack, support, Google Mobile Services, 3D TouchWiz UX and 4 hubs&#151Social hub, Readers hub, Music hub and Game hub.

Its price is expected to be in the range of Rs 30,000, which is not bad for a phone with these features.

Galaxy SII will be the best successor of Galaxy S, with better readability, better battery, a slimmer design, faster downloads, smoother UI, quicker multi tasking, efficient gaming and snappier streaming.

Google Apps for Android business segment updated

0

Google has announced a new version of its Apps Device Policy application for devices. With this, customers can access new features such as locating their device on a map, changing passwords or PINs remotely, and making their phone ring if it’s near them.

Those using Android tablets can encrypt their data on Honeycomb too &#151 a facility that was available only on earlier versions of Android.

Another addition is Google Apps Lookup, with which users can view details of their corporate contacts with ease. They just need to type or speak the email address or name of their colleague; a tap on the relevant contact on the phone screen does the rest, be it calling, or sending an email or text message.

The contact information is pulled from the Google Apps directory, but it first needs to be enabled by the IT administrators of the concerned business organisation.

These features from Google are supposed to enable Android to gain market share in the enterprise smartphones and tablet segments.

Google is working to bridge the gap between Google Apps and Android as it wants to use the popularity of Android to power Google sales, targeting users who would otherwise have stuck to conventional software options from Microsoft.

It’s important for Google to evolve enterprise features for Google Apps users, or else this lucrative market will go to Apple, Microsoft and Research In Motion (RIM).

According to Google, 300,000 Android devices are being activated around the world every day. A recent Gartner report has claimed that Android is likely to become the most popular smartphone operating system by 2012.

Sky Map: find your stars

0

With Google Sky Map on your phone you can discover and browse the night sky just by pointing your phone to space.

By using your Android phone’s orientation sensors, the application can show you a star map for your location. Through the search function you can find planets, stars and constellations.
Simply open the application and type the name of a celestial object you are looking for; for example “Saturn”. The application will tell you the direction in which you need to move the camera of your phone to find the planet.

Sky Map uses your phone’s GPS, and compass to create a window to the sky that moves with your hand.

You can also browse a map showing the brightest stars, planets, sun and moon, constellation lines, horizon, cardinal directions-North, East etc, and Messier Objects (astronomical objects such as planets, stars, satellites and comets).

You can also use the automatic mode to let Sky Map adjust the map for you, or switch to a manual mode that allows the map to be dragged with a finger.

The application works on all Android phones and is available free of cost.

So now you can explore planets, stars and constellations; and can learn their names and locations to impress your friends.

Windows’ Phone to outsell iPhone by 2015: Gartner

0

Despite initial hiccups, more people will opt for Microsoft’s Windows based phones than Apple’s iPhone by 2015 thanks to Microsoft’s partnership with Nokia.

According to a Gartner research report, sales of Windows based phones will rise to about 216 million units during 2015; while only 190 million units of based devices will be sold in that period.

However, Gartner has added that Apple’s iOS will remain the second biggest platform worldwide through 2014.

“By the end of 2011, will move to become the most popular operating system (OS) worldwide and will build on its strength to account for 49 per cent of the smartphone market by 2012,” Gartner said.

It has predicted that worldwide smartphone sales will reach about 470 million units in 2011, a 57.7 per cent increase from 2010.

Sales of open operating system devices like Android will account for 26 per cent of all mobile handset device sales in 2011, and are expected to surpass the one billion mark by 2015, when they will account for 47 per cent of the total mobile device market.

“By 2015, 67 per cent of all open OS devices will have an average selling price of $300 or below, proving that smartphones have been finally truly democratized,” said Roberta Cozza, principal analyst at Gartner.

“As vendors delivering Android-based devices continue to fight for market share, price will decrease to further benefit consumers,” Cozza added.

Research In Motion too will see a fall in its market share as competition grows in the sector, Gartner said.

BSNL, MTNL merger likely

0

BSNL and MTNL could be merged together along with PSU telecom equipment manufacturer ITI, if the recommendations of Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE) are accepted.

This could mean that BSNL will have nationwide and BWA (Broadband wireless access) coverage, offering its consumers better national facility.

Merger with ITI would help these two operators roll out networks faster, thereby providing better coverage. Procurement delays, by both these PSUs (public sector units), have resulted in poor leading to dropped calls and network congestion.

MTNL users would be biggest beneficiaries of the merger as currently they get the home network only in Delhi and Mumbai. While if MTNL becomes a BSNL subsidiary, customers of the former can get nationwide roaming in home network.

BSNL will also benefit from offering service in two of the largest telecom circles in terms of subscriber numbers.

However, the biggest benefit comes from the fact that finances of both these PSU will improve due to better resource utilisation and coordination.

These three PSUs have been making losses in the last couple of years despite having benefited from government support.
BRPSE in a note said, “The board strongly recommends the merger of ITI Ltd with BSNL, or its takeover by BSNL as a separate subsidiary, thereby ensuring strategic vertical integration. This should enable BSNL to combine service-providing with manufacture of products.”

Notably, MTNL posted a net loss of Rs 2,611 crore on revenue of Rs 3,781 crore during the financial year ended March 31, 2010. ITI posted a net loss of Rs 459 crore on revenue of Rs 4,596 crore during the same period.

BSNL informed the panel that it expects to turn profitable in the year through March, 2013, but projects a net loss for the just-ended fiscal year and the on going year that began on April 1.

The company expects to post a net loss of Rs 2,725 crore on revenue of Rs 31,738 crore in the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2011, and the loss is expected to narrow to Rs 623 crore on revenue of Rs 36,569 crore in the current fiscal year (FY2011-12).

BSNL, once the country’s flagship telecom company, posted a net loss of Rs 1,823 crore on revenue of Rs 32,046 crore in 2009-2010.

Intel to look after the hardware design of Kno tablets

0

The hardware design work of student tablet start up, Kno Inc, has been taken up by Intel.
For investment too, the Intel Capital and Advance Publications are likely to be the lead investors in the company. The company itself plans to concentrate on the software part of the business aimed at the student market.

The tablets, however, would not be manufactured by Intel, as it would just share the hardware designs with other manufacturers who would do the rest. In simple terms, it just means Kno would not be there in the hardware business anymore.

The Kno executives believe that since market is already offering so many new tablets in the market, seamless offering of the device was not doubtful anymore.

Market experts, however, suggests that Kno should rather concentrate on providing its software and other services through both Apple iPad and operating system based tablets. The company is well suited to do it as it has partnerships with well known universities and colleges in place.

Kno had not shipped significant number of tablets in the market, which could have played a part in the decision. The company is working on two tablet versions, one was a single screen device whereas the other one was two screens which would have been more expensive.

The market has already become too competitive with big companies in the fray which include Google, Apple, Amazon, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and, of course, Microsoft.

Google mulling tablet version of Chrome OS: Report

0

Despite launching the Honeycomb Operating system recently, Google is now planning to bring the tablet version of Chrome OS, according to CNET.

The source code has been discovered from the Cr-48 laptops distributed by Google itself to test its Chrome operating system for netbooks. At several places, the source code mentions CrOSTouch instead of CrOS.

The code also mentions the presence of a virtual keyboard which cannot be of much use on laptop, but an essential on the tablets.

The news has surfaced at a time when everyone thought that Google was concentrating more on Android, and more specifically, Honeycomb.

The new tab page of Chrome web browser, CNET says is one of the signs that Google is working on the new OS.

Google is probably preparing for a future in which the netbooks and tablets will have a unified interface, and the Google users would have a consistent experience across both the devices.

While some market observers opine that the two projects will combine in the future, others believe that Android will end up destroying Chrome.

The Google observers should be the least surprised, given that Google had shown off the mock up of Chrome on a tablet about a year ago itself.
