Acer to launch Liquid Mini in next two weeks

0

Acer is going to launch its latest 2.2 based Acer Liquid Mini smartphone in India. This will be an entry level Android offering, competing directly with likes of LG Optimus One and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini.

The Mobile Indian has got the official word from the company about the launch. However, there is no indication on the exact pricing which is expected to be in the range of Rs 10,000-11,000.

One of the highlights of the phone is its design which has rounded top and bottom with generous inserts. The phone will be available in a wide range of colours including jet silver, royal blue, piano black, lime green and light pink.

The screen is a 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen with 360×640 pixel and features pinch zoom function.

The Acer Liquid Mini will come with Android Froyo operating system, with Acer sitting on top it.

The phone is loaded with features like WiFi, 3G, A-GPS, FM Radio, Blutooth and 5 camera which records video with 480p resolution at 30 frames per second.

The only major drawback of the phone is its which at 600MHz (600 ARM 11 processor, Adreno 200 GPU, Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset) is not really fast, however it is at par with its competition at the price point of close to Rs 11,000.

Acer will also launch another smartphone with Android operating system, the name of which has not been disclosed. However, it is expected to be the Acer Iconia.

Is Android beating the iPhone?

0

Android is destroying everyone, especially RIM and iPhone, Business Insider recently said, citing comScore’s report that reported that Android’s market share in the USA has risen by 7 percentage points to 33 per cent.

According to the report , iPhone should feel like its future is going for a toss.

It is argued that technology platform markets tend to crystallise around one big player, and that is that platform. This further creates a domino effect because buyers choose the platform that appears to have a better future, with more users.

The website also argued that many more handset makers would vouch for Android if it starts offering the software more actively to them.

Android’s runaway success would appear to be the iPhone’s loss, but the products cannot be compared.

Market observers just compare the sales figures of Android phones (from several handset makers) and iPhone devices, and declare that Android is winning hands down.

Apple has three extremely popular devices &#151 iPod, iPad and iPhone, which run on the same platform. Even the Mac operating system is likely to have some features soon, so the number of people opting for the Apple ecosystem is likely to grow substantially.

Comparisons between Apple’s ecosystem and that of Android are legitimate and so far there is no saying which one is more promising.

Most people use tablet PCs for gaming: report

0

Most people use their tablets for gaming and in domestic environments, in contrast to the notion that they are used as mobile devices, a Google survey has found.

The survey found that most people use tablets at night.

A whopping 82 per cent of people use their tablets in domestic environments, according to the survey, which did not investigate the tablet brands people tend to use, but predicts that iPads might be the most popular device. Samsung Galaxy Tab may also be present in the sample in sizable quantity.

The survey says 38 per cent people use tablets for more than two hours; whereas 30 per cent use these devices for between one and two hours. Only 11 per cent of respondents said they use tablets as mobile devices.

By that logic, tablet use during weekends should have been high, which is not the case. Tablets are left alone during the weekends.

The notion that tablets are known to be made for consuming rather than creating content is likely to change as these devices evolve and their market size increases. The situation right now suggests that tablets serve as toys for bigger kids. Most people haven’t replaced their personal computers with tablets yet. At the same time, mobility seems to be the reason why people buy tablets.

About 43 per cent of respondents said they use tablets more than laptops, so tablets definitely have their own space in people’s lifestyles.

Gaming companies have to work hard to sell their gaming devices to users. The same cannot be said about Apple, which has already sold close to 15 million iPads since its launch last year. Hard core gaming is more advanced than tablet gaming, as people are more in favour of convenience than quality.

Acer shifts focus to tablets

0

The tablet trend has caught on with Acer too. The company’s new management has decided to shift its focus to the segment. Acer had previously focused its attention on boosting shipments of laptops to generate more revenue.

Acer’s chairman JT Wang also said that the company will concentrate on creating more value for customers instead of driving volume. For users it means products will be better, but that they will be more expensive as well. Going forward, Acer also intends to recruit more research and development talent.

Due to the razor thin margins that Acer operates on, market observers are concerned that the company may not be able to afford more research and development expenses. Acer, on the other hand, believes the growth in its revenue will offset the increased R&D expenses.

“It is no longer meaningful for Acer to pursue growth in sales volumes. The company should from now on focus on upgrading its profit margins,” Acer’s founder was quoted as saying in the Financial Times.

Acer will manufacture a Windows 8 tablet in association with Microsoft, and sees in it a huge opportunity for growth.

The movement of Acer in the tablet market has been slower than expected, especially considering the response of Dell and Hewlett-Packard. These two companies are not that directly affected by reduced personal computer sales, but have still responded well to the challenge thrown by Apple.

The situation has not always been the same at Acer. The company, which was an impressive success once, was caught off guard by the arrival of tablet PCs, and by the decreasing sales of netbooks. The resignation of its chief executive officer Gianfranco Lanci in March this year only underlines the problems the laptop maker is facing.

Intel Atom processors for tablet unveiled

0

Intel has unveiled its Atom processors designed for tablets PCs which includes Intel AtomTM Z670 and Intel SM35 Express platform, formerly codenamed “Oak Trail,”.

A range of tablets and form factors were also unveiled at a function in China.

In total about 35 tablets are expected to become available with Oak Trail chips starting in May from companies like Lenovo, Fujitsu, Samsung and Motion Computing. Oak Trail tablets are expected to be shown at the Intel Developer Forum show in Beijing this week.

The devices will ship with Android, Windows 7 and MeeGo operating systems.

Intel claims that the new Atom family is also suited for a range of portable embedded designs such as mobile clinical assistants, ruggedised industrial tablets and portable point-of-sale systems.

Intel, which is the biggest in the laptop and PC processor space, has been a laggard in rapidly growing tablet and smartphone space, which is currently lead by ARM, Nvidia and Qualcomm.

The main reason cited for this was the higher power consumption of Atom processors. With this launch Intel claims to have addressed the issue. In the recent past Intel has also bought some start ups to bolster development of its tablet and smartphone chips.

Intel is also said to be developing another next-generation chip for tablets, Cloverview, as part of its on going strategy to make its Atom processors more power-efficient.

The chip will be built using a 32-nanometer manufacturing process, which will lower power consumption.

There are two more 32 nm Atom-based chips that Intel is developing. The company’s “Cedar Trail chip” is being built for netbooks, while Medfield is meant for low-end smartphones and tablets.

Now an ad supported Kindle

0

Amazon is all set to launch a subsidised Kindle e-book reader supported by advertisements. The new Kindle is priced at $114 (about Rs 5,000).

The WiFi model of Kindle earlier used to cost $139 (about Rs 6,200), so the users are saving $25 (about Rs 1,100), which is certainly not a huge amount. But since Amazon is also offering special deals at the same time, the customers may end up saving more money as they use the device.

Amazon has made sure the advertisements do not distract users from their reading experience, as they would be displayed only at the bottom of the home page and on screensavers.

Amazon has not clarified whether the Kindle advertisements would be served on Kindle apps or not. In a way, Amazon is just making sure it can engage customers for a longer period of time as the chances of users buying Amazon products is less if they are spending time at Kindle or accessing Kindle apps from other devices.

Some users expected the price to go below up to the two digit psychological $99 price. Amazon very well understands the consumer psychology, as there are so many products they sell at $0.99 and $9.99.

So if Amazon people have not reduced the price to $99, there must be solid reasons behind it. Most probably, this is just an experiment for Kindle, they are just trying to find out how their sales are affected by this move. If they make enough money with the ad supported Kindle, probably the price may go down as well.

Symbians no longer open source

0

Nokia’s Symbian will no longer be an open source platform, the Finnish handset maker has announced.

Hence, all the developer source code for the development of this operating system will be released only for the collaborators.

“As we have consistently said, Nokia is making the Symbian platform available under an alternative, open and direct model, to enable us to continue working with the remaining Japanese OEMs and the relatively small community of platform development collaborators we are already working with,” said Nokia in an official blog post.

The blog added, “Through these pages we are releasing source code to these collaborators, but are not maintaining Symbian as an open source development project.”

But even though Nokia has announced change in the strategy for Symbians, existing users should not worry as Nokia promises to support Symbians even long after the transition to Microsoft has taken place.

Nokia is even planning to support both the platforms, Symbians and Windows Phone, simultaneously and as of now no discontinuation date for Symbian devices in India has been announced by Nokia.
