Kaspersky launches security solution for smartphones

0

Kaspersky Lab has officially launched its mobile security solutions in India that, apart from protecting your smartphones from malware and network attacks, enables you to locate your lost phone, protect data as well as block unwanted calls and SMSs.

The Kaspersky Mobile Security 9.0 is available in and BlackBerry platforms alongside Symbian and Windows Mobile.

Smartphones like Blackberry and Android phones are gaining more and more popularity in the Indian market. According to a research, Indian consumers are expected to buy 12 million smartphones in 2011. This growth definitely is a precursor to the number of trojans and malware that may be aimed at the smartphones.

With KMS 9.0, you just need to push one button to hide selected contacts and their contact data, including call histories, contact list entries and SMSs, and mute their calls. Contacts can also be hidden automatically after a preset idle period or remotely by sending a predefined SMS. You can also filter out unwanted calls and SMSs by creating a white list and a black list of contacts.

The solution allows you to wipe confidential files or block them remotely by sending a special SMS; locate your lost device with the help of the Find tool; or block your phone and be notified of its new number if the card is replaced.

Mobile users running Symbian or Windows Mobile operating systems can protect and encrypt their files with a strong algorithm. The GPS Find feature will help you pinpoint your smartphone’s current location, and if Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 is installed on your child’s device, you can always locate them quickly and easily.

The Parental Control module in Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 lets you restrict which numbers your children and other vulnerable individuals can call, such as premium-rate numbers, and allows you to control who calls them.

KMS 9 is available for Rs 599. More detailed information about KMS 9 is available at www.kaspersky.co.in

Cloud Talk, a popular social communications platform on the web, today announced the launch of applications for both and (Apple) platforms. With the launch of these applications Cloud Talk today announced its entry into the smartphone segment as well.

Cloud Talk allows its users to communicate with each other using text and images. People can also record messages in their own voices and can share video recordings with the community, group or even selected users. In terms of layout Cloud Talk resembles a common messenger application, or the conversation type message view in a smartphone, which includes the history of all conversations with a particular person or group.

Along with this the application is also integrated with popular social media networks like Twitter and Facebook, and with just one touch users will be allowed to upload their status update in audio, video, text and image form. Cloud Talk will work as a platform independent application providing integrated access to users of Android, iOS, and the internet as well.

As of now Cloud Talk is available free of cost and so are the applications for both platforms. It is also expected that the service will continue to remain free in future. Users can download the application form from the Android or iOS stores. Things to look out for while buying a Bluetooth headset

0

With tremendous growth in the number of cellphone users, the use of mobile phone accessories has also increased. Today every mobile user has one or more accessories for his handset, of which hands free kits are the most common because they make communication a hassle free experience.

Even basic phones above the range of Rs 1,500 feature Bluetooth connectivity. Almost all handset manufacturers have their own Bluetooth accessories for mobile phone users. All this has added to a vast market in which the prices of Bluetooth devices vary from Rs 1,000 to Rs 40,000.

Similar to mobile phones these devices have improved a lot in terms of technology, looks, and comfort. Here we have shortlisted certain pointers based on which you can make an informed decision while buying a Bluetooth accessory to suit your needs.

Budget

Be it in India or in any other part of the world, price has always been a big decisive factor behind purchases. With respect to Bluetooth accessories, it can dictate what all features your Bluetooth device can have, and even its brand. In the Indian market Bluetooth accessories are available for as low as Rs 1,000 &#151 even Rs 500 in case of lesser known brands.

In a basic hands free kit you will get single point connectivity, decent battery backup, and as you go up the price scale, features like noise cancellation, multipoint connectivity and easy pairing are added to the tally. In general, the higher the price the more features you are likely to get.

So even before you start thinking about a hands free kit, zeroing in on the price range will definitely be of much use. A budget of around Rs 3,000 is considered to be a safe bet since you get a wide range of choices within this amount.

Type of headset

Bluetooth accessories can broadly be classified in two categories &#151 the first being a stereo hands free kit, and the other a mono or monaural hands free kit.

The basic difference between the two is the type of sound effects they generate. The first produces a stereo effect which is essential for music playback and the monaural hands free kit does the job for normal conversations.

If you want a Bluetooth hands free primarily to listen to music, then you should opt for the stereo Bluetooth headset; and choose the mono hands free kit for simple communications.

Comfort and ease of use

Bluetooth hands free kits are for people who hate wires and are looking for hassle free communications. Choosing the right type of hands free kit becomes almost as crucial as its price. There are mainly three types of hands free kits available today: in ear type, over the ear type, and one that is a combination of both.

In ear hands free kits provide the most comfortable fit and they are perfect for conversations in noisy conditions. But the downside of this type of Bluetooth device is that some people feel a slight discomfort in using them in the long term.

Over the ear hands free kits offer a better fit and are suitable for wearing over long periods as they give ample space for the ear to breathe. The third type allows the user to change the device’s mode of wearing based on his need.

Connectivity and features

While buying a Bluetooth hands free kit, always remember to check whether it uses the same connectivity standard as your cell phone does. Bluetooth hands free kits work on three different Bluetooth standards: 1.1, 2.0 and 2.1. A new mobile phone will support older standards, but the reverse is not true.

New devices have a long list of features to offer too, but choosing amongst those features becomes a difficult and painstaking task. Though you would like to have as many features as possible in your Bluetooth kit, do remember that price will increase with the number of features.

If you talk a lot while you are outdoors a hands free kit that cancels noise would probably be of greater use to you than if you tend to sit indoors most of the time. Similarly, multi point or multi device connectivity will suit a person with multiple devices only.

It boils down to this &#151 buy according to your needs and don’t be swayed by swanky features.

Dell’s 10 inch tablet expected in June

0

A leaked document has confirmed that Dell’s 10 inch tablet will arrive in June. The Mobile Indian had earlier reported about these new devices from Dell.

Dell currently has two tablets in its portfolio: the Streak 5, which has a five inch screen and is available in India, and Streak 7, which has a 7 inch screen and is available outside the country.

The company is expected to add three more tablets to its portfolio. The first to arrive will be a successor to the current Streak series, but it will have a 10 inch screen with 3.0 Honeycomb operating system and dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor. It is expected to come in June.

This will be followed in July by a 13 inch tablet called Dell Latitude. This will be a Windows device with Intel i3 to i7 processors and a keypad doc (to transform it into a laptop).

After a month’s gap Dell will launch a Windows based 10 inch tablet in October. The device will be called Latitude ST and will feature an Intel Oak Trail 1.5 GHz processor and a 128 SSD, supported for up to 8 hours by battery.

All three tablets will boast high definition screens, but sadly these will only support data. So no calls can be made except using VoIP, for which there is a built in microphone.

These devices will also come with Dell’s own stack of enterprise applications.

Though the dates mentioned above are only for international launch, the new Dell tablets are expected to come to India very soon. A Dell India spokesperson refused to comment but didn’t deny the information’s authenticity either.

While the specifications have nothing outstanding about them, the success of these tablets will depend on the price and application integration.

Top Android apps not available on iPhone

0

Despite the vastness of Apple’s Store its users do not have access to some popular applications that are only available to users for the time being.

We dug up some of these applications. They are:

Google Gesture Search

With this app, Google has ensured that the number of actions performed by users is reduced to a minimum.

Google Gesture Search allows users to find a contact, a bookmark, an application, or a music track from hundreds of items on their handsets just by drawing a gesture on the touchscreen using their fingers.

Since it is from Google, you can bank on the app to produce the most relevant results.

Swift Key

Swift Key predicts the word you are about to type based on what you have already typed .

It is a standard keyboard app, which often surprises users with its correct text predictions.

Android users can download it for just $2 (about Rs 85).

According to the developers of the app, it has already seen one million downloads since its launch.

NESoid

NESoid is a gaming emulator for Android phones that stands apart from its peers.
It can run most of the available ROMs and has a feature that allows you to save a game in the middle and pick up from where you left it the next time you load NESoid.

Even classic Nintendo titles can easily be enjoyed on NESoid though users should not expect the same level of finesse as is available on Nintendo.

Google Listen

Google Listen is an official application from Google that lets you listen to podcasts and web audio on your Android-powered device.

It is a useful app with convenient buttons to search podcasts. Users can subscribe and browse previous episodes of podcasts through it.

The app can also be set to download relevant information according to the user’s preference, such as when he is in a Wifi network or when AC power is available to the phone.

How Apple kept users interested in its iPhone and iPad

0

No other smartphone, or even tablet, has seen so much buzz in the market as have Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The long queues outside Apple stores during the launch of each version of these devices are testimony to this fact.

A question that arises here is how Apple manages to keep people’s curiosity alive each time it launches a product. Most analysts and media commentators attribute this to Apple’s marketing strategy.

But no product can be sold in hordes on the basis of hype or a positive media image alone. More often than not, Apple’s products are ahead of their time and they satiate the interest created by the hype. Products from Apple do have their share of problems but in spite of that they have a long list or ardent followers.

There are other companies that manage to create hype around their products but fail to back it up with a great product.

The hype, especially on the internet, is often incoherent. Speculative commentators and bloggers just add to the incoherence.

But in terms of marketing, all this chatter on the web ends up building just the right amount of interest around Apple products.

Apple’s strategy of maintaining secrecy also creates an element of surprise around its products, thus fostering constant discussion about them in the market.

Mango update to be known as Windows Phone 7.5

0

The upcoming version of Windows Phone 7 operating system will be called as the Windows Phone 7.5, Microsoft has said.

Popularly known as the Mango update, it is set to be released in the later part of 2011.
The number of the version of the operating system would not be mentioned after this update, and it would simply be called as Windows Phone.

It will introduce some new features, including multitasking capability, a hardware-accelerated mobile version of Internet Explorer 9, Twitter in the People hub, better support for Office documents in SkyDrive (Microsoft’s free cloud-based storage service), and more.

The motion sensor library will also be accessible to the developers, so the users can expect better augmented reality apps (those apps which use real world elements and improve them with phone tools) in future.

The upgrade would support music players natively irrespective of whether they are being played from apps or browser, which means music would play in the background even as users choose to do other things on their phone.

HP TouchPad to have music and movie stores

0

Hewlett-Packard is planning to bring music and movie stores to the HP TouchPad tablet, according to reports.

The company may also allow users to sync their content through HP servers.

The music store may also come with a programme which will make sure the frequently accessed music tracks are stored locally on the users’ device. Users will also be able to stream music which is not owned by them. Probably, users would be required to pay a monthly subscription fee to consume music. HP may follow the iTunes model in which users get a small free preview of the content, and the full content can only be accessed if the users pay for it.

HP is making every effort to make its TouchPad more attractive for the end users, and the cloud based services are a step in the same direction.

Apple, Amazon, and Google have all been moving towards a future full of attractive cloud services, and now HP is joining the party as well.

The HP story began in 2010 when it acquired the music streaming company Melodeo. The logic of the acquisition has become clear only now. The operating system of Hewlett-Packard allows the apps running on the tablet to show up as cards enabling the users to manage several apps at the same time.
