Google working on BBM type app for Android

0

Google is working on a application similar to that of the BlackBerry Messenger(BBM) offered by Research In Motion, according to the Wall Street Journal.
“Google Inc, whose software is the most popular operating system on smartphones, has also recently worked on a messaging application,” the report said.

Recently Apple has also come out with iMessage service, which is almost identical to the BBM.

BBM has been one of the cornerstones behind RIM’s success, the producers of Blackberry phones.

No other details were given in the report. Google currently relies on third party messaging apps like Whatsapp, Liveprofile and Kik. The objective is to keep users on a specific mobile OS and keep them loyal to the brand.

RIM currently has over 55 million BBM users and Apple, when 5 is officially released in the fall, will have millions of users too.

Bing solves app search problem for iOS users

0

The Microsoft has updated the mobile version of its Bing search engine for devices, which means the Apple users would now be able to search for the right apps for their needs. Searching for the right apps has always been a problem for the smartphone generation, and the Bing for iOS users intends to do just that. There are close to 500,000 apps in the App Store now, therefore it’s easy for the right apps to get lost in the crowd.

The announcement was made by Microsoft in a blog post. The users will either be able to search by the name of app or by category such as news apps or top iPhone apps.

The blog post says, “Auto app discovery is a unique feature created by Bing. The Bing search engine will surface apps in the context of normal web queries. For example, Thor 3D, Facebook and Hotels in Seattle are some of the queries for which Bing automatically finds the right apps.”

The Bing team also adds, “If an App is not installed on your phone, when you click on the download link Bing takes you to download the app from the iTunes App Store. If the App is already installed and the developer has enabled the launch functionality, then it will launch automatically.”

To check the apps, users need to go to m.bing.com in iPhone’s web or they can alternatively download the Bing app for mobile. There two ways to search &#151 one may be a general search term, which will include app search results as well, or the users can simply search for apps only.

Those developers, whose apps support the Bing functionality, can be launched from within the web app itself, and there are 50 such apps in the market now. Rest of the apps are expected to add this functionality with time.

Camgun debuts on Android

0

Since quite some time we all have been hearing a lot about augmented reality and how it can overlay virtual objects over real life objects. Camgun, a newly launched application on Android, takes gaming to a whole new level with incorporation of augmented reality in the best possible way.

One plays by tapping the gun icon in the upper left corner – it will appear on the screen in the same manner as a first person shooter. Then, tap the screen to fire, or tap the crosshairs icon to sight the gun. Press the camera icon to take a photo of the shot. This is simple which adds to the addiction of just cycling through the weapons, listening to the racking, and shooting whoever is near by.

The look and feel of the Camgun application is a bit more realistic than the existing games all thanks to the added augmented reality kick in the game. Uses need to shoot the opponent and then take a screenshot of the same and boast about it on the internet through Facebook integration that this application has. The game gives the option of choosing from five totally different weapons to kill the opponent, including the Star Wars’ light saber too. Users can adjust the effect of the kill by tweaking the settings of the application to get a more realistic kills.

Munsell, the creator of this application, calls this application as more of a camera application rather than a game. But, with its integrated and Geo tagging capabilities, it gives a whole new meaning to social gaming and would be fun to play as the developers are planning to add more effect and weapons to the application soon.

The Camgun application is available in both paid and free variants. If you do not wish to be annoyed by distracting ads during the kill time, you will have to pay a one time price of Rs 63 to get a paid version of the application. The application is available for v 1.5 and above but there are separate versions, one for Android V1.5 and 1.6 and the other one for Android V 2.0 and above.

Windows Phone to climb to No 2 spot by 2015: IDC

0

Android will continue to be the top operating system whereas Windows Phone 7 will trudge up to the second spot by 2015, ahead of iOS, the operating system behind iPhone, research firm IDC (International Data Corporation) has predicted.

The predictions are based on the Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker data from IDC.

Windows Phone 7 currently has only 3.8 per cent market share whereas IDC says it will go up to 20.3 per cent by 2015, the biggest jump ever projected for any platform. The Symbian platform, which will be phased out gradually, holds similar market share currently.

Google’s platform would mark its presence in 43.8 per cent of all smartphone by that time from its current share of 38.9 per cent. The Symbian market share will go down substantially since it is being phased out by Nokia, and it will be (virtually) nil by 2015.

“The smartphone floodgates are open wide,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. “Mobile phone users around the world are turning in their ‘talk-and-text’ devices for smartphones as these devices allow users to perform daily tasks like shopping and banking from anywhere. The growth trend is particularly pronounced in emerging markets where adoption is still in its early days. As a result, the growth in regions such as Asia/Pacific and Latin America, will be dramatic over the coming years.”

“Underpinning smartphone growth is the rapidly shifting operating system landscape,” added Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Phone Technology and Trends team.

“End-users are becoming more sophisticated about what kinds of experiences are offered by the different operating systems. Taking this as their cue, operating system developers will strive for more intuitive and seamless experiences, but will also look to differentiate themselves along key features and characteristics.”

Making such predictions is a risky business, especially considering the fact that nobody foresaw the rise of tablet or the Microsoft’s collaboration with Nokia either.

Talking about short term expectations, IDC believes the smartphone market will grow by 55 per cent this year compared to 2010 and the number of smartphones in circulation would double again only by 2015. Even though the market share will go down to 16.9 per cent from current 18.2 per cent, the overall number of tablets being shipped will go up substantially due to the growth in market size.

Handset Review : Micromax Bling 2 A55

0

Micromax, unlike many other mobile phone and smartphone manufacturers, is very concerned about their female users. It came out with the Bling series specifically for the females and till date two mobile phones have been launched in this series.
The first Bling handset, also known as Micromax Q55, was a keypad based dual phone with a white and pink colour tone and to a large extent was liked by many across the country.

The company has recently come out with the Bilng 2 A55 which is, unlike its predecessor, an based smartphone and not merely a feature phone. Micromax has beautified the Bling 2 with the same Swarovski crystals, used in the first Bling, both in the front and the back.

We know that being males we won’t be able to justify the appeal of this phone, so we gave this phone to a female colleague of ours and the inputs have been translated here.

Look and Feel

The Bling 2 A55 has the same glossy white finish as its previous avatar but Micromax has decided to shed the pink highlights which is a really good decision. The phone looks classy and definitely is an object of attention. The Q55 did not face any colour fading issue and we dearly hope that it continues with the Bling 2 too.

Micromax was not able to include a vanity mirror in the phone this time so they have included a handy carry case with the phone that acts as a soft cover for the phone and has a mirror and place for one knick-knacks too. The Bling 2 A55 is not light and weights slightly on the heavier side but even after that the design is compact and is very comfortable to hold this for longer durations also.

Build Quality and usability

The built quality of the Blind 2 is quite a remarkable thing. We drop-tested, actually accidentally dropped it, from a height of 3 feet on to flat concrete floor and the Bling 2 survived without even a scratch! The back cover fits in tightly and does not leave any space in between, making it dust proof to some extent but the placement of the opening notch is odd and will cause some problems to the ladies while opening the back cover.
Overall, the Bling 2 is designed for a single hand operation which will be liked by its users.

Display and Buttons

The 2.8 inch display has a capacitive touch that aids a smoother operation. The of the screen is on the lower side but the Bling 2 compensates for it with ample colour vibrancy and image brightness.

The Bling has three main operation keys on the front, out of which the options and the return key are capacitive while the home key is a hardware push key placed right below the crystal encrusted semi circle.

The volume keys are laced on the right side and are easy to access while on the call as well. The power key or the display turn off key is placed on the top and is very comfortable to use.

One thing missing in the Bling 2 is a dedicated camera key which is dearly missed while taking pictures especially as the camera application also places the capture key on the extreme left side of the screen making it impossible to click using a single hand while in landscape mode.

OS and Application

The Bling 2 A55 features the Android Froyo 2.2 which is very stable and has the maximum number of compatible application in the Android Marketplace. There is no information about the upgradability of this OS but it runs smooth except for a few occasional freezes. During the course of review, which is almost a week, the phone froze for two times.

The 600 gives it all the power needed for a smooth operation and juice to support multitasking as well. The phone comes preloaded with Net Quin antivirus programme, so don’t worry about security. A couple of other useful applications like eBuddy messenger, Opera mini and Office suite are also preloaded making this device ready to perform right out of the box.

Multimedia and Camera

It has 3 fixed focus camera which clicks good images in daylight but the quality falls badly in the night or low light conditions. The default Audio player and video player of the phone supports known formats of videos and Audio, plus users can download many other players if they need advanced music or video playback.

Bling 2 has one slot which is expandable upto 16 GB, but it would be advisable to use 4 to 8 external memory to ensure smooth usage. It has a 3.5mm jack for headset and audio connectivity. The headset provided with the phone delivers average quality sound so if you love music you need to buy a good quality headset.

The phone uses both and for external connectivity and can be used for data browsing too while indoors.

Price and Conclusion

With a price tag of Rs 9,000, the Bling 2 comes out to be a fair deal in which a user gets a good looking phone with a decent amount of features. Ladies, whom Micromax has targeted with this phone, will definitely like this smartphone. While aftermarket upgrades for adding the additional Bling costs a huge sum, Micromax Bling 2 offers that at the bare minimum price.

All in all the Bling turns out to be a good smartphone with a balanced price point.

BlackBerry to focus on mobile games

0

Research In Motion has acquired a social gaming company, Scoreloop, which may help the BlackBerry maker to integrate social media into its apps running on both its smartphones and the PlayBook tablet.

The social gaming software from Scoreloop helps other developers integrate social media features in their apps &#151 for the BlackBerry users it means they can see features like Facebook and Twitter connections, virtual currency and in-app purchases within their mobile games.

“We’re excited that the Scoreloop team is joining the BlackBerry Developer team and bringing their expertise in creating social and collaborative gaming toolkits for mobile developers to the BlackBerry platform. Scoreloop is a pioneer in mobile social gaming and offers a customisable and cross-platform social mobile gaming developer tool kit,” RIM said in an official blog.

Scoreloop’s software works across all platforms, and it’s not yet clear whether RIM will allow it to continue supporting other platforms or not.

The gaming startup has in fact built a complete gaming ecosystem as well as gaming communities aimed at producing revenues from mobile games. RIM is clearly trying to cover the gap it has with the and devices, especially after the lacklustre response received by the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet in the market. The Canadian handset maker was probably drawn into the deal with Scoreloop because the later had in billing capabilities which the former was lacking.

The RIM developer blog post further said that, “The company had recently enabled the developers to create social app experiences through BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) social platform and have seen some very innovative applications result from that.”

The company expected Scoreloop to “provide tools that will further enable our developer community to take gaming to a new level of social integration on the Blackberry platform.”

Some of multiplayer games on BlackBerry platform which may benefit from Scoreloop acquisition include BrickBreaker, Marcala, GT Blackjack, GT Roulette, Texas Hold’ em, Age of Heroes, World of Dragons and Jogamo Chess.

Pan India Nokia mobile money service by 2012

0

After launching its mobile wallet service in Delhi-NCR, Pune and Chennai, Nokia is now mulling to extend the service across the country by next year.
Consumers, using the service, will be able to transact and make payments directly using their Nokia phones. They will also be able to top up their mobile money wallet at Nokia retail outlets.

“By 2012 it will become a pan-India product. The focused market is semi urban and rural markets and also below average income urban markets,” Chatterjee told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of Nokia’s dual phone X1-01 and C2-00 in Andhra Pradesh market.

Nokia at present has a tie-up for the e-wallet facility with Yes Bank and Union Bank of India, and the company is considering a tie-up with other banks.

Nokia is the only handset maker which offers mobile money service along with partner banks, all the other mobile money services are offered by telecom operators like Airtel, Reliance, and Vodafone along with their partner banks. Nokia is in a position to offers such a service thanks to a wide network of retailers that it has.

Nokia has embedded its Mobile Money services on Nokia X1-01. The service provides the unbanked access to financial services through their mobile phones, thus empowering people and their business and driving financial inclusion in the country, said TS Sridhar, director-south markets, Noika India.

Nokia’s new dual SIM phones, X1-01 and C2-00, come pre loaded with mobile money applications, other Nokia users will have the option to use the service as well, for which they will need to download the application.

All other users, such as those who have account with the partner banks or the ones who do not have a bank account, can use it to access financial services through their mobile phones.

The service will be provided in two categories. A no-frill account will be given to users with limited identity proof and will have limitations on the maximum amount that can be kept in the account and daily transaction limit.

While customers who provide full verification will have no such limits. Customers, opening no frills account with limited verification, will have a limit of Rs 50,000 and a daily transaction limit of Rs 5,000, as per the current RBI guidelines.

The service will enable consumers to transfer money to other individuals, withdraw cash from Business Correspondents cash-out outlets (registered Nokia stores) and ATMs, pay utility bills as well as recharge prepaid SIM cards (top-ups) by using their mobile devices.

Notably, consumers of all telecom service providers can avail this service.

Govt raises concerns about multi-platform Tiger Text app

0

The Government of India has raised concerns about a cross-platform application and service, Tiger Text, that allows setting lifespan of a text message. That means the sender can get a message deleted from recipient’s mobile.

Home Ministry has warned the Department of Telecom to make it mandatory for all cellular operators for procuring clearance from the Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) if the service is deployed by any of them.

Brent Bamberger, head of marketing for Tiger Text said, “TigerText is surprised by the comments by the Indian government as it has consumers using its application in 119 countries with no issues whatsoever.”

Tiger Text is a cross-platform that allows a sender to set a life span of the message (text, image or video). So the sender has the control of wiping off the message from the recipient’s handset but a copy of to the same message lies on the Telecom operator’s server of unlimited amount of time.

Just like number of other cross-platform messengers, Tiger Text utilises phone’s data connection for messaging. That has alarmed the India Home Ministry assuming the application’s potential usage by the terrorists.

A telecom department official familiar with the matter said, “Use of the (Tiger Text) application by Indian telecom service providers can create operational problems for national security agencies. The telecoms department should ask all telcos to proper lawful interception arrangements and secure approvals from the security agencies before availing of the service from Tiger Text.”

Apparently the Home Ministry believes that the Tiger Text’s function of destroying the text and video messages may hinder the operations of the law enforcement agencies. Security concerns have become a high priority for the Indian Home Ministry and we have seen government’s recent squabble with the Canadian cellphone maker – Research In Motion. The issue between RIM and government still remains unsolved.

As of now, Tiger Text doesn’t seem to have heard from DoT officially but is ready to co-operate at any level. Bamberger said,”TigerText welcome the opportunity to talk with the Indian security agencies or telecommunications companies to help them understand the product as the company does not want Indian consumers to suffer from not being allowed to receive the benefits of its service.”

Home Ministry’s concern about country’s security is quite understandable. However, a specific approach or set of pre-defined guidelines might ease off any hiccups in the process.

Android application coming to WP7 soon

0

Microsoft has launched an application which will help bring popular apps from the Market to the Windows Phone 7 based phones.

The new Android Application API (Application Programming Interface) will provide a simpler and an easier way of porting applications to the Windows Phone 7 environment. It will also help developers from the hassles of recoding the application from the scratch thereby saving a considerable amount of effort and also making the applications available in a shorter span of time in the process.

However with this, the customers will be benefited at large as now they can expect a larger and more popular number of applications in the Windows Phone 7 marketplace.

The process of porting an application and the way to use the API has been described in the white-papers that are being provided along with the API package. The Interface has not been kept as open source but is open for comments and suggestions related to the designing environment or the application interface as well. There is also help by the name of the “App Guy” which will crawl through popular developer focused forums and websites to help them with the problem relating to the new API.

As of now the porting is only available for and Android operating system that too for just the Windows Phone 7 platform but the inclusion of Mango update is also under way and some results can also be expected soon.

Android Market place today stands tall with having the largest number of application and games for its users. Recently, a similar application mapping tool was launched for the iOS.
