Google Plus for Android receives new stream views via update

Google has released an update for the official Google Plus app for the smartphones. The new Google+ App update brings content stream customisation and much demanded customisations for Huddle (Group chat).
Google Plus is the new social network that lets users share text, photos, videos and links with other contacts added to different lists called Circles. The Google Plus App is available for Android phones running version 2.1 or higher.

Google Plus or Google+ app for Android has been quite popular due to its sleek interface and instant upload function which creates a private album for user in the clouds. The new update for the app brings the option to adding individual circle streams along-side the main stream.

In simple words, it is like adding individual circle streams to view as you swipe between Nearby, Main Stream and Incoming streams. You have to just swipe from right to left on the main stream to access the stream of individual circles.

Huddle (group chat) users can set permissions for the different users who can start huddle with them. So now you have options – Anyone, Your Circles and Extended Circles that can be set to allow them to invite you in a Huddle. Also you can dismiss the new Huddle invitations.

Huddle maniacs can now add entire circle or multiple users to a huddle. However, one issue remains unsolved &#151 if a single person has invited another single person for a huddle, neither of them can leave that huddle. Also, bit of eye candy has been offered with a new feature that will let users to set a photo as wallpaper.

Since the default profile privacy settings are visible to all, anyone can add anyone on Google Plus. Several users complain about random folks adding them to Google Plus but most people forget to make best of the profile specific privacy settings.

Notably, during the second quarter earnings call recently, Google chief executive officer Larry Page announced that Google+ already got over 10 million users with 1 billion items being shared every day on it.

The social network is expected to grow in coming times if the app comes to other mobile platforms as well.

S Tel announces new tariff plans for Odisha

S Tel has announced a series of tariff plan, under a common umbrella of Chote Miyan Bade Miyan, for its subscribers in Odisha.

S Tel subscribers can now choose a plan of their choice to match their budget and specific needs from a plethora of larger (Bade Miyan) as well as smaller denomination (Chote Miyan) plans comprising of rate cutters, bulk minutes for every segment (Local, STD, ISD) along with and packs.

All products under first range, Chote Miyan, come with 30 days validity and have in-built talktime of Rs 10. Customers can enjoy choice of products like – SMS Dhamal that gives first 100 SMS (Local + National) free every day or 1paisa/2second Calling Karnama.

There is also an offer that allows first 10,000 sec of Local and STD calls at 1paisa/sec, while another one allows users to make STD call as cheap as local call. Similar attractive offer in this range include &#151 GPRS Ka Maza, Flat Rate Kamal, Local S Tel masti and ISD dhamaka.

Similarly, Bade Miyan gives a larger benefit to its customers &#151 a whopping validity of 90 days and in-built of Rs 30. The second range packed with portfolio of products ranging from ISD Dhamaka which gives to consumers lucrative first 5,000 second to Nepal and Gulf at 10 paisa/sec or Flat Rate Kamal with attractive tariffs as low as 30 paisa/min for local calls and 40 paisa/min for STD calls.

MTS brings high speed internet to Delhi-Jaipur highway

Sistema Shyam TeleServices (SSTL), which own MTS brand, has announced availability of high speed internet services along the 265 KM Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH8). It is MTS’s first initiative in the phased roll out of high speed data services along major highways across the country.

With this, MTS claims to become the first telecom operator in the country to provide the service. The CDMA operator has used the Evolution-Data Optimized (EVDO) technology to roll out the services.

“With a view to enhance customer experience, MTS has prepared a blue print to take the mobile usage in the country to the next level. In a phased manner, MTS will be launching seamless HSD services across some of the busiest highways in the country,” said Vsevolod Rozanov, president and chief executive officer, MTS India.

He added, “We are the first telecom operator to provide seamless HSD connectivity on Delhi – Jaipur Highway. For enhanced customer experience, the company also plans to put in place a robust retail network along all the activated Superfast Internet Highways.”

With the roll out of HSD services on the Delhi – Jaipur stretch of NH-08, MTS customers will be able to enjoy seamless HSD connectivity on their laptops and smartphones.

Apart from the high speed internet, users can also now be able to enjoy Live TV and on demand video channels on the go thanks to the MTS TV.

Viewsonic dual OS tablet to be available in India within 10 days

Viewsonic is set to launch two tablets including a 7 inch 2.2 tablet and a 10 inch Windows/Android dual OS WiFi tablet in the Indian market within 10 days. The company also plans to launch six other tablets by the end of this year.

“We plan to have eight tablets in the Indian market. We are not playing the pricing game here. We are focused on better technology and quality,” Ajay Sharma, country manger, Viewsonic, India, told ‘The Mobile Indian’.

He added, “We plan to reach consumers with the right product that meets their personal as well as professional requirements.”

Although these products were expected to be launched earlier, due to some reason they didn’t ship to India. Now they are available and will be in stores within the next 10 days. Viewsonic has also tied-up with Reliance Retail to sell through Reliance Digital outlets.

The 10.1 inch tablet will feature the first dual boot OS aimed at professionals who also use tablets for personal use. The Windows 7 premium will ensure that the tablet is completely in sync with enterprise servers and security issues and Android 2.2 will serve the purpose of personal computing and mobility.

The tablet is based on an Intel Pine Trail N455 1.66 GHz processor, which is the latest version of Intel’s Atom family, with integrated DDR3 2 RAM. The screen is a 10.1 inch capacitive touch display with 1024 x 600 pixel resolution and backlight. Other features include up to 32 GB SSD storage capacity, a 1.3 webcam and full connectivity including a mini VGA port and slot.

The WiFi of this tablet is capable of transferring data to the projector, which supports data streaming over WiFi so that you don’t need wires to use the projector. It also has remote desktop support that allows the tablet to be connected to computers to access files.

Connectivity options are aplenty with 2 ports, a mini VGA port, a microSD slot, and 3G. The tablet weighs 907 grams and includes a 3200mAh battery which is good for 4 hours (a bit short, but then it is a powerful tablet).

The price is expected to be close to Rs 38,000, which is justified looking at the specifications of the tablet.

The other device will be an Android 2.2 based 7 inch tablet with specs similar to those of the Olivepad. It will have a 600 processor, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G (through a dongle), a VGA camera at the front and 3 megapixel camera at the back. The battery is a 3240mAh unit, which is good for 4 hours of heavy use and 40 hours of standby. The tablet will carry a price tag of Rs 19,000.

LG Optimus Pro in August

LG will launch its first touch and type input based smartphone, the Optimus Pro, in India in August, an Indian spokesperson for the company told ‘The Mobile Indian’.

The LG India spokesperson also refuted media reports which said that Optimus Pro will replace the LG Optimus One.

Optimus Pro is an Android Gingerbread based dual input (touch and type) device featuring a 2.8 inch capacitive touchscreen, full keypad, and WiFi, HSPA and version 3.0 connectivity.

The Pro will feature a slightly underpowered 800 with a dedicated graphic core in the form of Qualcomm MSM 7227 system on a chip, which should take care of users’ daily computing requirements.

LG would probably launch this device below Rs 13,000 making it affordable for many users looking at an affordable and smart mobility option.

As pointed out by the LG spokesperson, the company plans to launch quite a few devices in the month of August and along with Optimus Pro, it also plans to launch the Optimus 3D in India.

So, will the Optimus 3D be launched alongside Optimus Pro or separately remains to be seen this August.

Google brings new photo social networking: Photovine

Google seems to be on a roll for social media overhaul – earlier with the Facebook killer Google+ and now a simple rival to almost all photo sharing websites with the Photovine.

In the past, we had heard quite a few rumors about Google working on a social network specifically based on photographs and now with the unveiling of the Photovine all becomes very clear.

The working of the new social networking service is simple but unique. Photovine works on the principle of vines that comprise of pictures added to any given topic by single or multiple users through their mobile phones. All that is required here by this service is a couple of pictures, which the users can use to create vines or can also add to the existing vines.

These vines are visible to other users as well who can also add pictures to the existing vines if they feel like or they can create a new vine all together.

Privacy has been taken care of in this as users can choose to make their photo vines visible to others or not. As per the teaser released by Google, the Photovine follows a Twitter like system in which the people who have subscribed to a users’ Photovine gets instant update as and when a photo is uploaded on it.

As of now, the Photovine service is under wraps but with a plan to roll out the service soon, invitation requests of users are being accepted at the Photovine website. Users can visit the Photovine website here and register for an invite, sooner the better as the invites will be taken care of on first come first serve basis as expected.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Duo in September

Sony Ericsson will launch its first dual core handset, Xperia Duo, in September this year. Photos of the 2.3 Gingerbread device were leaked through a Chinese forum and a website.

Featuring a massive 4.5 inch touchscreen the Xperia Duo will also come integrated with Bravia Mobile Engine technology. As per rumours this 4.5 inch touchscreen display will support 960 x 540 pixel qHD resolution.

The dual core inside Xperia Xuo will be clocked at 1.4 GHz, but there’s no information on the manufacturer of the as yet. Every dual core processor has its distinct features that promise better and faster user experience with applications as well as multimedia.

Other than that Xperia Duo will feature a 12 camera with Exmor R CMOS imaging sensor to offer top notch imaging quality and video recording. Yes, we can anticipate that the camera will record 1080p full video and also play the same.

To power the host of power-loaded hardware, Sony Ericsson will add a 2500mAh battery with enough juice for at least a day.

Facebook for Every Phone has all the popular tabs – News Feed, Messages, Events, Photos, Friends and others. So even entry level devices can enjoy the app treatment instead of having to access the text version of Facebook Zero.

Facebook is addressing entry level handsets apart from smartphone owners to gain a larger audience on the mobile platform. Let’s see if the rival Google+ application would be available for Java-enabled handsets or not.

MNP effect: 10.5 mn users switched operators in May

MNP (Mobile Number Portability) seems to be gaining popularity with 10.5 million (105.70 lakh) users switching to other operators using the service in the month of May, registering a growth of 24 per cent.

Out of these requests, around 6.32 lakh pertains to Haryana wherein MNP was implemented from 25th November 2010. In MNP Zone-I (Northern & Western India), maximum number of requests have been received in Gujarat (10.53 lakh) followed by Rajasthan (8.25 lakh).

Whereas in MNP Zone-II (Southern & Eastern India), maximum number of requests have been received in Karnataka (7.95 lakh) followed by Tamil Nadu service area (7.74 lakh).

It seems that the service is gaining popularity through word of mouth advertising as peers switch operators getting better deals from the new operator, luring others into using the service.

Twitter for Android app gets new features

Twitter for Android application has received a worthy update that brings push notifications and multiple account support. Two of these features have been requested heavily by the users ever since the first version of the official Twitter App was rolled out.

The new Twitter app v2.1.0, for devices running Android 2.1 or higher, can be downloaded from here or from Android Market.

After installing and sign-in to the Twitter App, the Push Notifications settings can be accessed by going to Settings> User Name and then select the type of notifications &#151 Tweets (normal updates), Mentions and Messages.

There’s still no functionality to create and set push notifications for custom search strings like heavy rains, traffic jams, bomb blasts, etc.

Several users have more than one Twitter account and now they can manage multiple accounts with the new Twitter for Android App. Multiple sign-in support allows user to log in just once and then the application stores the account details.

The widgets have also got some changes and now users can put widgets about the normal updates or mentions to the Homescreen of Android smartphones. Apart from that, the update has number of improvements and bug fixes.
