Yahoo backed Alibaba unveils mobile OS

0

Alibaba Cloud Computing, developer of advanced data centric cloud computing services and a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, which is 40 per cent owned by Yahoo, has unveiled its internally developed cloud-based mobile device operating system, the Aliyun.

The K-Touch cloud smartphone, W700, the first mobile phone powered by the cloud OS, was also unveiled and will be introduced to the Chinese market at the end of July.

Alibaba also plans to integrate the with other devices including mobile phones with larger screens and tablet computers in the coming months.

Currently the devices based on this OS will be available in the Chinese market only, however, since Yahoo has substantial stake in the venture, it will probably be made available in other markets as well, once the success is ascertained in the Chinese market.

Yahoo would love to revive its fortunes through this Operating system and would like to challenge its arch rival Google, which has made Yahoo a fringe player in the search engine business and already has a formidable presence in the mobile operating system market with its OS.

“Mobile users want a more open and convenient mobile OS, one that allows them to truly enjoy all that the Internet has to offer right in the palm of their hand, and the cloud OS, with its use of cloud based applications, will provide that,” said Wang Jian, president of Alibaba Cloud Computing.

He added: “Introducing cloud apps to mobile devices not only brings a whole new user experience, but also greater ease for third-party mobile software developers who will be able to use Internet technology such as HTML5 and JavaScript to reduce the complexity in the development process.”

The cloud OS will feature cloud services including e-mail, Internet search, weather updates, mapping and navigation tools. A distinguishing feature of the cloud OS is its support for web-based apps.

These offer users an Internet-like experience and do not require the user to download or install application software on their mobile devices. Cloud OS users can seamlessly synchronize, store and back-up data such as contact information, call logs, text messages, notes and photos to AliCloud’s (the service of Alibaba Cloud Computing) remote data centre, and can also access and update this data across all their PC and mobile devices.

AliCloud will provide each cloud OS user with a total of 100 gigabytes of data storage initially, with plans to expand according to user needs.

Third-party developers can opt to either develop cloud apps over their own servers or choose to use AliCloud’s infrastructure and open platform services at a low cost and quickly develop their businesses.

The cloud OS is the result of three years of development and uses AliCloud’s self developed distributed file system and virtual machine; the cloud OS is also fully compatible with
Android-based applications, which means that there will be no dearth of applications for the OS.

The specification of the W700 include 3.8-inch Touch Display with 480 x 800 screen NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz dual-core processor, 5 megapixels back facing camera and 0.3 megapixels front camera. The rear camera has 720p video recording capability, and the can playback 1080p HD video.

The phone has 512MB RAM, 8GB ROM, micro-SD card slot for 32GB memory expansion. Connectivity is taken care by HSPA (7.2 Mbps), 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, A-GPS.

Now pay for OVi apps using credit cards

0

Nokia has again opened up its Ovi store for purchases of paid apps through credit cards irrespective of service provider network in India. The company had closed this option August last year after getting into an exclusive deal with RCom under which the handset manufacturer agreed to give exclusive content (paid apps) only to the users of the later.

A Nokia spokesperson confirmed this to ‘The Mobile Indian’ saying: “We have started the beta version for payment through Indian credit cards, the commercial version will be live soon”.
After the RCom agreement, users of other network were allowed to download free apps only while RCom users had the facility to purchase the paid apps as well, for which they had the option of operator billing, i.e. they could later pay for the apps through their postpaid bill or can get the amount deducted from their prepaid balance.

With the end of exclusive agreement between the two companies, subscribers on other operators’ network can also use their credit cards to make the purchase as was the case prior to agreement with RCom.

The spokesperson also confirmed that they are already in talks with more operators for operator billing partnerships. However, she refused to give names or timelines for these partnerships to come through.

RCom not looking at tariff hike

Contrary to the perception that telecom companies across the country are set to hike tariffs in the face of Airtel increasing its call rates, Reliance Communication has no such plans as of now.

“As of now Reliance Communication has no plans to hike their tariff for pre paid and post paid connections,” said sources familiar with developments in Reliance Communication to The Mobile Indian. However, the teleco may hike the rates after a month or two, given the low tariff rates it is offering now.

Airtel on Friday increased its call and rates by as much as 20 per cent and it was said that other operators will follow suit. This resulted in share markets responding positively, seeing increase in operator earnings.

Reliance Communication (RCom) is the second largest operator in the country and offers services using both GSM and CDMA technology. And it already offers one of the cheapest call rates in the industry with even free calls within the network. RCom has more than 100 million subscribers in the country.

However, other operator might still go ahead with a tariff hike given the fact that Airtel and Tata Docomo has already done so, and profit margins for operators are at an all time low, with intense competition from the new operators as far as tariff rates is concerned.

Amazon looking to keep its tablet inexpensive

0

There are enough signs that Amazon is trying very hard to save costs on its proposed tablet, so that it can be made as inexpensive as possible.

Digitimes reports that the touchscreen of the Amazon tablet will probably be able to recognize only two finger touch, not more &#151 a clear cut strategy to cut costs. Amazon is also reportedly removing the in built cameras and reducing the memory capacity to keep the costs of its devices down.

Earlier, The Mobile Indian had reported the possibility of quad-core in the Amazon tablet, but its possibility is receding with the reports of Amazon’s increased emphasis on cutting costs as much as possible.

Some analysts also speculate Amazon may also decide to sell the tablets at a loss so that it may make money on the sale of music, movies, e-books and apps. Amazon will be having a comprehensive content ecosystem on the platform, so the speculation may even turn out to be true.

One sign is unmistakably clear – Amazon is more concerned about low prices, and less about hardware of its tablet. If the company can take its tablet price lower than $300 (about Rs 13,300), then the cost cutting measures by the company may end up translating in success. At the same time, there are signs on the Internet that Amazon is looking to strengthen its presence in India, so the Indian Amazon fans may soon have much to cheer about.

Apple iPhone gets another upgrade

0

While many people are still busy updating the 4.3.4 security patch on their Apple devices, the iPhone maker has now released yet another security patch, named as the iOS 4.3.5.

The new security patch was released by Apple right after 10 days of releasing the previous patch. It deals with the problem that allows unauthorised access to an attacker while the certificate validation happens over the SSL/TLS protected data session.

Notably, Apple was quite late in reverting with the PDF security patch, which was discovered by external agencies. But this time Apple has on their own found out the vulnerability. The intensity of the issue can only be gauged by the level of quickness Apple has shown in releasing a patch to counter the issue.

With this update, Apple has fixed the issue of unauthorised access by further strengthening the data validation. Apple has also released a supporting document explaining the possible reasons for installing this patch.

The security patch for iOS is applicable to all Apple devices including iPhone, iPad and both third and fourth generation iPods. Users can update this on their device by simply plugging their device on to the computer while running iTunes.

Android Market to show download history of apps

0

Android Market has seen a quiet update which will show a chart on each of the page to the users displaying installed history of the apps. With the addition of this new feature, users would now be able to easily find out more about the popularity of that particular app. Users will also be able to see what effect certain updates had on the popularity of that application.

Although this is just a subtle move from Google, the Market continues to improve the user experience. The new graph is located on the right side of the app page.

Though it does not show a detailed view of the installed history, it still shows some good bits of information. For example, the Swiftkey app page shows a graph of its install history with a sudden spike. The spike in app installs came when Swiftkey came out of Beta.
