0

Spice Mobility (S Mobility), which has changed its focus from low end feature phones to smartphones, is set to launch a new dual handset with 3.5 inch screen in the next couple of days.

While talking to The Mobile Indian, Payal Gaba, general manager of marketing at Spice Mobiles, said, “We are going to launch Mi350 Android phone in the Indian market within next two-three days. This will be India’s first dual GSM SIM Android handset with capability. It will also have a 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen and a 5 camera.”

She added, “We are pricing it close to Rs 9,000 and the phone will be based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.”

Spice Mi350 is already available in the Malaysian market with the same name, and is part of the portfolio of CSL, which is a Spice group company. However, in that country the phone is based on Android 2.2 Froyo and comes with a 600 processor.

Other features of the phone include GPS, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and 5 megapixel camera. Other Android essentials like a gravity sensor and are also present.

RIM to launch Bump-like app using NFC

0

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) is planning to launch a peer to peer (P2P) application like Bump to transfer information

RIM recently launched Curve 9360 and Bold 9900 smartphones in India with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which allows communication between two devices that are up to 20 cm apart. needs chips, software and an platform like BlackBerry OS7.

Krishnadeep Baruah, director of marketing at RIM India said to The Mobile Indian, “RIM will soon launch a P2P (like Bump), through which users who have NFC enabled smartphones like Curve 9360 or Bold 9900 can transfer contacts, images and other files among themselves.”

He further added, “We are also working in other areas like mobile payment where we can incorporate NFC technology embedded in our new phones to make the lives of BlackBerry users simple but it will take some time as necessary approvals from regulators and our partners is awaited.”

In the meantime, RIM is working with HID Global to enable users of new versions of RIM’s Bold and Curve smartphones, which support NFC. HID Global manufacturers access card systems for door locks and secure areas. In companies, employees often have to swipe a plastic card at a reader to gain access to their building or to activate the lift.

BlackBerry’s NFC operates at a similar to HID’s contactless smart cards, meaning the company did not have to change its existing systems to migrate to smartphones carrying the chip.

In the days to follow, users in India can expect BlackBerry devices which support NFC to function as mobile wallets, card readers and in the P2P (peer-to-peer) mode.

In mobile wallet mode NFC devices can function as credit cards, debit cards, or tickets for public transport.

In card reader mode NFC devices can read tags. This is similar to how barcode scanning works today. This mode of using NFC is currently being used in London’s museums where visitors just need to touch their phones to tags of certain exhibits and can instantly get more information about the display.

Buying mobile phones outside India? Think again

0

A plethora of mobile phones is now available in India but many people still feel that the grass is greener on the other side (i.e. in the West). Anyone can be tempted to buy a mobile phone or pick up a tablet while on a trip to western countries. One may certainly get a good deal on the price but unknowingly loses out on something very important &#151 warranty. That’s one thing which everyone expects but rarely bothers to dig deep into.

Recently, the unlocked iPhone 4 was one of the hottest and most sought after devices in India. Such unlocked mobile phones can be bought from grey markets, third-party channels and also through official stores from Western countries.

However, in case your mobile phone starts giving you issues, then the only thing that comes to your mind is warranty. There are three different types of warranty from different mobile phone manufacturers.

The manufacturer’s warranty is the one offered by the original manufacturer of the product for repairing the mobile phone in case any defects are found after purchase. For example, Micromax recently announced an exchange policy for defective handsets.

Second is the replacement warranty which is offered by the dealer/seller or the manufacturer to replace the mobile phone for any manufacturing defects and if the device is still in the warranty period.

Finally, dealer warranty is when the dealer offers to get the mobile phone repaired within a certain period after purchase.

Whether online or offline, the purchase of unlocked handsets have the manufacturer’s warranty limited to the country of purchase. So if you have purchased a handset from India, then you cannot have it replaced outside India even if your phone is within the warranty period.

Talking about the warranty of iPhone 4, Apple India stated that the “iPhone is the only Apple product that comes with the warranty limited to the country of purchase.”

Even Apple Authorised Resellers like Maple India will not offer any replacement warranty on iPhone. The same is reflected in the iPhone 4 Limited Warranty document.

For instance, if you have bought an unlocked iPhone 4 or BlackBerry handset from the United States, then the warranty on that device is limited to the United States only. In case you bought the same unlocked handset to India you will not be able to claim warranty on the mobile phone here.

In short, the warranty of a mobile phone is limited to the country in which it was purchased.

Primarily, the warranty period of the handset is offered for a twelve month period. Chargers, batteries, headsets, cables and usually covers are covered under warranty ranging from six months to nine months. A majority of mobile phone manufacturers like Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG, Nokia and HTC offer a year-long warranty that involves repairing the defective parts or replacing software.

Mobile phones are usually available in India in two basic ways &#151 unlocked or carrier locked. An unlocked mobile phone means without any carrier code/apps and ready to be used with any GSM module. In several countries, only cellular operators enjoy the pleasure to sell contract-free or unlocked handsets but in those cases the mobile phone still comes with some carrier software.

Carrier-locked mobile phones mean the device comes with specific software and has network connectivity locked down to a particular cellular service provider. Unlocking carrier locked handsets violates the device warranty in any country.

Advait Vaidya, senior product manager for RIM India, shed light on the matter, stating, “International warranty on mobile phones is a big logistical and regulatory challenge. In many countries, the cellular service providers sell unlocked as well as locked handsets with their own verified code running on it. In case anyone flashes or applies a software version other than the original one, the warranty is void.”

So it is a big logistical challenge for mobile phone makers to offer international warranty on mobile phones because a) cellular operators wish to get consumers to buy mobiles from them or use their custom code bearing software, and b) legal regulations differ from country to country. The most important reason for employing country specific warranty is to prevent the grey market import-export business from flourishing so that official retail partners are protected.

An online marketplace like eBay is the ground for several sellers for offering handsets with or without warranty. However, eBay India does give clarity on different types of warranty that sellers on eBay India may offer, which can be read here.

Basic requirements to claim warranty

The basic requirement to claim warranty is that you have the warranty card/certificate duly filled and stamped by the seller. Besides that, several manufacturers provide warranty that covers faulty part replacement only. Also, the owner of the mobile phone is expected to produce/share the original copy of the bill that has the handset’s number clearly mentioned on it. The mobile phone owner is required to visit the nearest service center with the mobile phone, warranty card and original copy of the bill to make the best of the warranty.

When purchasing a new mobile phone, thoroughly check for original logos, markings and see that the packaging is intact &#151 non-tampered. Always insist on getting the warranty card stamped and signed by the dealer.

Do not be surprised or agitated if the official channel of mobile manufacturers in India refuses to repair/service your mobile phone in case you fail to produce all the documents mentioned above or if the handset has been bought outside India. In that case you will have to shell out some cash from your own pocket and get your phone repaired from third party service centers.

Amazon will offer bunch of cloud services and storage with the Kindle Fire tablet. This new tablet is available for US citizens for pre-order starting today at price of $199 (Rs 9800 approximately) and will start shipping from November 21.

Jeff Bezos, president and chief executive officer, Amazon at the launch stated that the Kindle Fire tablet has anti-reflective coating and constructed with technology. This display supports 1024×600 and has 169 pixels per inch density.

Amazon has customised the user interface and tablet is not running the Honeycomb OS but instead running some currently unidentified version of the operating system.

Under the mere 11.4 mm thick chassis, the Kindle Fire houses a dual-core 1 GHz TI OMAP4 family coupled with 512 RAM to support a customised version of Android operating system. With 8 onboard storage, this tablet only supports WiFi wireless connectivity. There is a 2.0 connector port and a 3.5mm audio port to hook any pair of earphones.

Kindle Fire features a new tablet web called Amazon Silk that uses hardware power of the tablet along with the power of Amazon cloud services for speedier performance. Amazon Silk works on split architecture and is a brand new web browser for tablets albeit with different work mechanism compared to traditional web browsers.

Silk name has been coined from actual silk thread and stands for invisible yet incredibly strong connection to fetch the web pages from the Amazon Web Services cloud servers to the Kindle Fire tablets. Based on the user’s browsing preferences and behaviour along with the learning from other web servers, the Amazon Silk browser uses predictive technology pre-cache the web pages on the tablet itself which eventually allows faster loading.

Kindle Fire supports Whispersync technology to sync the user’s Kindle eBooks library along with other things such as bookmarks, notes and highlights. The Whispersync technology even extends to video offering to continue where user exactly left off watching movie or TV Show on the TV. With that Amazon has opened up its library of 18 million movies, TV shows, apps, games, songs, books, newspapers, magazines, audiobooks and other content for the Kindle Fire users.

The tablet also brings Amazon Store to allow users to browse, purchase and install several Android apps. For all the apps, movies, TV shows, and ebooks, Amazon offers free unlimited as well &#151 only for Amazon Content.

Research analyst Gene Munster from Pipper Jaffery stated that Amazon is keen and focused on providing super content delivery by leveraging on its Cloud servers based services. However, the company is likely “losing about $50 per Kindle Fire” and that corresponds to the hardware upfront.

Initially the Amazon Kindle Fire will be sold through Amazon Digital Services in the US only and we are not aware whether company plans to start shipping the tablet worldwide. Two years ago, India has got the Kindle as part of Amazon’s Global expansion. However, there are no intimations on whether the Kindle Fire tablet will be available in India as well.

Without any camera, the Kindle Fire is purely content consumption device where one can read eBooks, watch videos and listen to music at one’s comfort.

Vodafone brings cheapest HTC smartphone with cheapest 3G plan

0

HTC has launched its latest and India centric smartphone – HTC Explorer. The phone has been designed especially for the Indian market and is arguable the first time HTC has done so. India is also the first market to get this Smartphone.

The phone is priced attractively at Rs 11,600 and comes with a 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen with 320 x 480 resolution, and is based on the latest 2.3 Gingerbread, with HTC Sense user interface’s latest 3.5 version sitting on top of it. Besides, it features a 3 camera. Indian consumers will enjoy exclusive pre-loaded content and applications including Saavn, Bollywood Hungama, NDTV Cricket, NDTV news, eBuddy XMS, HTC Flashlight, Asphalt Adrenalin, Uno and Cricket Pro.

The phone has very modest specs with just 600 processor, 384 MB RAM and 3.2 megapixel camera. However, given the price and HTC’s quality and user interface, it makes a good value for money smartphone. The also comes with several India specific applications.

What makes it all the more attractive is the special offer from Vodafone, which is available to all users of Explorer who buy the device before December 31st 2011. Vodafone will offer double the data compared to plans available to other users. So HTC Explorer totting individuals will get 200 MB data for Rs 100, 1 for Rs 375 and 2 GB for Rs 650. The offer will be valid for three months after activation.

Kumar Ranganathan, chief marketing officer of Vodafone India said: “This phone is customised for India, with Indian applications built-in. We are confident of its success in the country”.

Lennard Hoornik who is the president of HTC South Asia is equally confident of the device. He said, “We are pleased to announce this smartphone for India, and we believe that it will get a favourable response from Indian consumers.”

The phone gets all that you expect from a typical Android phone, but all that you get is the latest for instance the offering 560 Kbps, latest 3.0 version, and WiFi b/g/n. Not that it is the only device to do so, but it certainly one of the cheapest with all this and more.

However, 600 MHz processor and just 384 MB of RAM mean that it will not be the fastest even amongst its peer in this price range, with the norm being 512 MB RAM, and many having 1 GHz processor.

Handset Review: Colors X5

0

Dual mobile phones today not only offer benefits of two SIMs but have also undergone drastic changes becoming sleek and stylish handsets. Colors X5 is another such dual SIM handset that we got for review at our test center.

Colors Tele Tech has been in the Indian market from quite some time now and in the past we have seen some great products coming for this brand as well. The company has launched the Colors X5 handset to mark its 2nd anniversary. So how well does it stack up against the real world situations let’s find out.

The Colors X5 seems inspired from a couple of mobile phones that we have seen in the past but resembles none. The looks of this mobile are great with a full glossy body and the colour choices offered by the company do justice to the design and makes this device look classy. The body, as we mentioned earlier, also has a glossy finish that adds a few more points to its looks but at the same time is a bit difficult to maintain or keep clean as we live in a sub tropical climate.

The device has a bold size and with a thickness of 12.4 mm, this device gives sure grip to the user and the confidence to talk freely. The edges of the phone are rounded and smoothened which adds a little more comfort in holding and while talking on the phone as well.
The company has spent some good amount of time in designing this phone and by far this has turned out to be a good looking phone and is definitely one of the USP’s of this device.

Keypad and Display

The X5 has a standard Alpha numeric multi tap keypad which settles just below the big silver colored Dpad along with the function keys. The keys are transparent while at the base they carry the same colour as the device’s body giving it a neat look. All the keys except the Dpad are of the same size but are spaced out well so that the user does not feel any discomfort while using them even for longer durations. Also the Dpad and the center key are quite comfortably placed and the Dpad is raised slightly above than the rest of the keys which enhances usability.

The display is powered by a 2.4 inch 320 x 240 pixel resolution based TFT screen but with a higher than the displays featured on most dual SIM based devices out there. The display is quite vibrant and the colour reproduction is quite accurate. The display although small is good for viewing pictures and video watchers will also not be disappointed by it.

Build Quality

Despite having a plastic body, the build quality of the device is good. The Colors X5 can withstand the jitters of daily use easily with a few occasional drops added to it as well. The display is protected by a protective plastic shell but be careful as it get scratched very easily.
Also the glossy finish of the device is prone to scratches but good thing that the company has provided a protective soft case with the device to keep it safe and protected in case of drops and falls.

Call performance

The Colors X5 gives good call connectivity between different cellular strength areas and even with 1-2 bars worth of network, the call quality is good. Being a dual SIM device means that it can be connected to two cellular networks at the same time but it has a single SIM standby mode which means it can be connected to only one SIM in one go.

In terms of earpiece loudness and clarity, the Colors X5 again fairs well but the microphone could have been better especially considering that most of the times we people deal with noisy conditions. connectivity is standard with so you can connect any hand free and stereo hands-free as well.

Operating system and Multimedia

The user interface of the Colors X5 is a custom built interface and has no resemblance any other phone provided by any other mobile phone company and possibly is the only one to offer language options in Hindi and Marathi after English. The menu has a grid type layout with bold icons making it easily accessible for the user. Accessing the menu is easier and as the name a lot of colours have been added to the menu and interface as well.

On multimedia front, the X5 is a decent performer. The phone supports up to 8 of external storage, though the company did not bundle any with this device. The X5 has an inbuilt audio video player that supports most popular audio and video formats like MP3, WMA, MP4 and 3GP as well. Besides, the X5 comes with a standard port so no compatibility issues will be faced by the users also.

The 3.5 mm connectivity allows it to connect to any audio device very easily. In terms of music playback, the device’s loudspeaker is great but the headset works good from low to medium volume levels and at high levels the quality goes for a toss. You can also try plugging in another or a better set of ear plugs but the device itself has some issues with playback at high volume levels.

The Colors X5 also features a 1.3 fixed focus camera at the rear with no built in flash. But there is a flash light provided on the top of the phone. The camera does a good job by clicking decent visuals even in low light conditions as well but it’s useless without the flash for night photography.

Battery backup

The device features a 1250 battery pack that is capable of powering this device for up to 3-4 days of standard usage that includes up to 1 hour of calling and music usage per day. But the battery backup will differ from usage of one person to other. The bottom-line here is that the battery backup is good and acceptable as the X5 won’t let you down.

Finally

To sum it up, the Colors X5 is a nice effort by an Indian mobile phone player to present something stylish to the market and it packs in enough features and looks to be liked by many on the first look itself.

It impresses with its performance and decent multimedia capabilities but surely with a price tag of Rs 2,149, the Colors X5 becomes a good value for money offering that you won’t regret even after months of usage.
